July 2: A beautiful View 092/365

July 2: A beautiful View 092/365

Pittwater is such an amazing place. Basically it's an huge lake in pittwater, which is on the opposite side of the coast to the beach.

The reason we ( Dad, his Girlfriend and myself) were there was because of a get together with my dad and his friends he has known for about 40 years. Most of them being his friends that lived with him in Avalon.

I should have taken some photos of the house. It was probably made around the 60's or 70's but is 2 storeys and has been renovated I think. A really beautiful location as you can see. The garden you see in front of the pool runs up the hill to where I took these photos and is their back yard literally. The pool is theirs and so is the boatshed along with the little wharf.

Had alot of fun, we played alot of guitar and things, most of us being musicians ( excluding myself I guess, I'm only a beginner compared to the adults). There were a few kids there whom I know through my dad's friends - Luke, Paul, Lilliana, and Lewis and Elliot who I already knew.

Ethiopian Lithophones with Stand, Monastery of Na’akuto La’ab

Ethiopian Lithophones with Stand, Monastery of Na’akuto La’ab

Lithophones, or stone bells, were one of my discoveries on my visit to Lalibela, Ethiopia.

Until then, I had been vaguely aware that jade bars had been used as chimes or bells in ancient China, but I did not know that stone bells were used in Ethiopia.

Of the lithophones I saw in Ethiopia, this set at the Monastery of Na’akuto La’ab near Lalibela was the best engineered, supported as they were from a relatively horizontal piece of wood that was, in turn, held by forked tree limbs or tree trunks sunk into the ground.

My background in archaeology, where I found and examined many types of lithics, aka rocks, tells me the bells are made of flint, chert, or some other rock with similar properties.

How do I know this? It's the tell-tale blue of the rock's interior below its weathered skin, and the shape of fractures that have the rock's interior. That's just what flint and chert look and behave like.

With that, I've told you all I know about this musical instrument. What don't I know?

> What it sounds like.

> How far the sound carries.

> How sound is produced, though there's a round, black object resting on the top bell that could be the clapper.

> How old the bells are.

> What is the bells' history? Have they always been at this monastery, or have they been in other places?

> On what occasions the bells are used.

> How often the bells are used.

> There are two bells. Is any attempt made to produce a carillon effect (albeit a limited one) or a tune by ringing both bells in a predetermined order and rhythm?

> Do any other musical instruments ever accompany the bells?

> Are new lithophones still being made in Ethiopia? If so, by whom?

> Can anyone strike the bells, or is that task assigned on the basis of status or seniority?

> How important is the spacing between the bells, between the bells and the ground, and between the bells and the wall?

> How often are the cords that support the bells examined for soundness, and how often are they replaced? Ditto for the wooden supports.

Well, I'll be sure to get answers to all these questions the very next time I'm at the Monastery of Na’akuto La’ab.

In the meantime, if any viewers happen to know any of the answers, or facts I didn't think to list, feel free to let us know. It could be a while before I'm back in Lalibela.

LOUVRE - Paris The treasures of Ancient Egypt

LOUVRE - Paris The treasures of Ancient Egypt

A sistrum (plural: sistrums, sistra]) is a musical instrument of the percussion family, chiefly associated with ancient Iraq and Egypt. It consists of a handle and a U-shaped metal frame, made of brass or bronze and between 76 and 30 cm in width. When shaken the small rings or loops of thin metal on its movable crossbars produce a sound that can be a from a soft CLANK to a loud jangling. The name derives from the Greek verb ????, seio, to shake, and ????????, seistron, is that which is being shaken. Its name in the ancient Egyptian language was sekhem (s?m) and sesheshet (ssst).

The sistrum was a sacred instrument in ancient Egypt. Perhaps originating in the worship of Bast, it was used in dances and religious ceremonies, particularly in the worship of the goddess Hathor, with the U-shape of the sistrum's handle and frame seen as resembling the face and horns of the cow goddess. It was also shaken to avert the flooding of the Nile and to frighten away Set. Isis in her role as mother and creator was depicted holding a pail symbolizing the flooding of the Nile, in one hand and a sistrum in the other. The goddess Bast too is often depicted holding a sistrum, symbolizing her role as a goddess of dance, joy, and festivity.

Sistra are still used in the rites of the Coptic and Ethiopian churches. Besides the depiction in Egyptian art with dancing and expressions of joy, the sistrum was also mentioned in Egyptian literature.

The Invisible Landscape

The Invisible Landscape

Essoudry, Wellman +1, Live at the Avant Garde, Ottawa.

The group stayed faithful to the venue and to the long improvisational pieces which have been brought forth during the night and characterized the group. More precisely, throughout the course of two sets, and two 45 minutes songs, the musicians have achieved to attain the invisible landscape of the human mind. From soft tantric like hypnotizing ostinatos, to rugged seizure like passages, the music explored the finest and deepest corners of honesty. Music can't lie, and it tries to do so even to a lesser extent when it is the fecondation of improvisation and soulfulness which can coexist on a very narrow edge that separates a total flunk from perceptual beauty. More to come from these fine musicians... It is only a matter of time

Whether I'm playing it on guitar, playing it on piano, listening to it through my iPod, or in any other form, music is something that is very important to me.

It's become such a part of me and a part of my life.

I listen to it, I create it.
I sing my favourite songs, and my own songs.
I am taught in it and I teach others.

I feel very lucky to have music as part of my life.

Joshua 6 - Fall of Jericho - scene 03 - Circling Jericho

Joshua 6 - Fall of Jericho - scene 03 - Circling Jericho

Joshua 6:2-14 (NLT)
But the LORD said to Joshua, "I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its mighty warriors. Your entire army is to march around the city once a day for six days. Seven priests will walk ahead of the Ark, each carrying a ram's horn. On the seventh day you are to march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give one long blast on the horns, have all the people give a mighty shout. Then the walls of the city will collapse, and the people can charge straight into the city."

So Joshua called together the priests and said, "Take up the Ark of the Covenant, and assign seven priests to walk in front of it, each carrying a ram's horn." Then he gave orders to the people: "March around the city, and the armed men will lead the way in front of the Ark of the LORD."

After Joshua spoke to the people, the seven priests with the rams' horns started marching in the presence of the LORD, blowing the horns as they marched. And the priests carrying the Ark of the LORD's covenant followed behind them. Armed guards marched both in front of the priests and behind the Ark, with the priests continually blowing the horns. "Do not shout; do not even talk," Joshua commanded. "Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout. Then shout!" So the Ark of the LORD was carried around the city once that day, and then everyone returned to spend the night in the camp.

Joshua got up early the next morning, and the priests again carried the Ark of the LORD. The seven priests with the rams' horns marched in front of the Ark of the LORD, blowing their horns. Armed guards marched both in front of the priests with the horns and behind the Ark of the LORD. All this time the priests were sounding their horns. On the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They followed this pattern for six days.

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:
I have set this scene in the late morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:
The sun (high & on the left) lights this scene

CHARACTERS PRESENT:
We can see the Hebrew army marching around the walls of Jericho. Joshua is in the lead (with the big bronze battle axe), followed by a few spear-carrying soldiers. Behind them you can see the seven priests, each blowing a ram’s horn. Some distance behind them we can see eight Levite priests carrying the Ark of the covenant, which was always covered in a blue cloth, when being transported. Behind them is the rest of the army, in the distance.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
We know from scripture that the officers of the Hebrew army recommended that the people keep about 2000 cubits (or 1000 yards (about 914 metres)) distance between them & the Ark of the Covenant (see Joshua chapter 3 & verses 1-4.) However, that wouldn’t make a very good cartoon illustration, so I have used “artistic licence” & shortened the distance somewhat! Similarly, we see the Hebrew army marching right next to Jerichos’ city walls, where in fact they would probably have wanted to march several hundred yards/metres away... out of bow & sling shot range!

Who was Joshua?
The assistant and successor of Moses. He was the son of Nun, the son of Elishama, head of the tribe of Ephraim (Exodus 33:11; Numbers 1:10) Ephraim was one of the two sons of Joseph, born whilst he was in Egypt. Joseph was the man who received the multi-coloured coat from his father Jacob.
I have been working on designs for flags & banners of the 12 tribes of the Hebrew people. The colours I intend using for Joseph’s banner will be greens 7 blue/grey’s. You can see these colours depicted in Joshua’s clothes.

What did the priests wear?
The Priests wore these garments:
A long tunic (the embroidered coat) with sleeves of white linen, woven throughout without seam. (Ex 39:27.)
White trousers (underclothes) from hip to thigh. (Ex 39:28.)
A white linen hat or mitre wound like a turban, but cone-shaped. (Ex 39:28.)
A sash or girdle woven made of fine linen cloth and embroidered with blue, purple, and scarlet yarn (Ex 39:29)

Uniformity of soldiers arms & armour
I haven’t read this anywhere (yet!) but I doubt that every soldier in an ancient army wore exactly the same design of armour. Mass production methods in modern times have allowed matching outfits or uniforms to be made, so that all soldiers wear the same kit. But in the late Bronze age, I can’t imagine any army soldier having identical armour, clothing or uniform. It is quite possible that arms & armour would be passed down from father to son, since they would be very valuable items. Even when a complete army was kitted out by one person (a king, for instance) I imagine that many different artisans & craftsmen would have been involved in the manufacture of their clothes, armour & weapons, inevitably creating variation in the end products. For this reason I have introduced variations

Shofar Ram Horn Half Polished 12

Shofar Ram Horn Half Polished 12

In Biblical days, the shofar was used in a variety of ways: The first and most important was to announce the onset of the beginning of the Sabbath and holidays. This was in pre-calendar days when people couldn't always be sure when the festival would begin. It would be used at the coronation of a king, or as a sound to rally to battle. It was used by Gideon (Judges 6 & 7) to confound the enemy, the Midianites, who so outnumbered Gideon's 300 men. It was used by Joshua to bring down the walls of Jericho !

More and more, we find churches incorporating the use of the shofar at the beginning of Sunday services, calling the congregation to prayer. How fitting to use the same instrument with which Jesus was also called to prayer.

Because I have been tagged...!!

Because I have been tagged...!!

Hi folks, a while ago I was tagged by Ricky_Tha_Man.(Check out his photostream btw, its very creative) This means that I have to come up with 10 random things about me and that I have to tagg others to do the same thing. So, consider yourself tagged if you find your name in my tags. Well, here I go:
1: I just started to wear reading glasses, as you can see on one of the pics
2. My favorite foods are: tomatoes, pasta, cheese, chocalate. Recently I fell in love with saltless bread, but dont ask me why! And you can wake me up for a piece of Pondkoek, a specialty from the dutch Island Terschelling. (Dear Dutch readers, try it out, I promise its wonderfully delicious.)
3.Except for the reading goggles I like getting older, I feel more balanced than ever!
4. I have a Youtube account, Hamadah4, in which I have some videos where I play some classical stuff
5. Music is probably my biggest passion in life. I sold world music and jazzrecords for eleven years, and I played the violin in lots of folk and klezmerbands. My idea of heaven is a big house with lots of rooms where I can play or learn to play every musical instrument that I like...
6. Favorite artists: Piazzolla, Cracow Klezmer Band, Dhafer Youssef, Yes, Kansas, lots of classical, world music, folk and progr. rock.
7. I can be a bit shy and blush easily.
8. I like to get in contact with lots of different people during worktime, but putside the workdays I like my peace and quiet, except for contacting my friends.
9. I am a vegetarian since 1987 ( did I mention I was getting old?) because the food-industry here in Holland sucks.
10. I had two cats, who died during the last two years. And no, I could not convert them to vegetarianism!

1716 Strad #4 Matching Study

1716 Strad #4 Matching Study

This was an experiment that was inspired by a discussion over at Maestronet regarding f-hole matching. My violin pattern is based on a 1716 Strad (Tuscan-Medici). The original 1716 Strad in the video has a darker, reddish finish on it and my violin has the lighter finish on it. It is somewhat humbling to see the differences, especially in the corners. The differences become more apparent towards the end of the video when the overlay transitions happen quicker. There will always be some disparities due to the angle at which the photos were taken and the arching differences. I realize that if a person did this exact same experiment with a makers own works that there would also be differences. However, it is a good reference to use as a learning tool for me.

One week later. Matching study part II. I pulled out my drawings, my 1716 photos, my mould and my template and compared everything the other night. The differences are very minimal when I compare the actual violin with the drawing and original photo so it would seem that the differences in this movie are the result of various angles and sizing aspects of the photos. It's still a nice tool for reference but probably not something to base making major changes on.

Credit Line: Room of Contemporary Art Fund, 1940

Description from Albright-Knox Art Gallery: Painting and Sculpture from Antiquity to 1942

“Carnival of Harlequin” is one of the most familiar and appealing of Surrealist paintings. It was painted in Paris during the winter of 1924-25, the climactic work in a series in which the landscape and color of Miro’s native Catalonia were supplanted as primary influences by the painter’s private fantasies. Miro was later to describe this work as follows:

“The ball of yarn unraveled by the cats dressed up as Harlequins of smoke twisting about my entrails and stabbing them during the period of famine which gave birth to the hallucinations enregistered in this picture beautiful flowering of a fish in a poppy field noted on the snow of a paper throbbing like the throat of a bird at the contact of a woman’s sex in the form of a spider with aluminum legs returning in the evening to my home at 45 rue Blomet a figure which as far as I know has nothing to do with the figure 13 which has always exerted an enormous influence on my life by the light of an oil lamp fine haunches of a woman between the tuft of the guts and the stem with a flame which throws new images on the whitewashed wall at this period I plucked a knob from a safety passage which I put in my eye like a monocle gentleman whose foodless ears are fascinated by the flutter of butterflies musical rainbow eyes falling like a rain of lyres ladder to escape the disgust of life ball thumping against a board loathsome drama of reality guitar music falling stars crossing the blue space to pin themselves on the body of my mist which dives into the phosphorescent Ocean after describing a luminous circle” (1).

Though several other of the painter’s contemporaneous works have . . . been shown to have been based on specific texts by Surrealist poets whose company Miro frequently sought, no such source can be identified for “Carnival of Harlequin.” The title, however, may provide a clue to the meaning of this welter of whimsical detail. The character of Harlequin is familiar from the “Commedia dell’arte,” in which he plays a foolish clown, perpetually and almost always unsuccessfully, in love. Despite Miro’s own identification of the two cats with Harlequin, the bearded and mustachio-ed gentleman at the left in the painting sports Harlequin’s traditional mask, rounded “admiral’s” hat and diamond-patterned tunic. Carnival, in its strictest sense, refers to the merrymaking and revelry which precede the enforced abstinence of Lent. The prominent hole in Harlequin’s middle suggests that his fasting has begun prematurely. Indeed, Miro wrote, “For Harlequin’s Carnival I made many drawings into which I put the hallucinations provoked by my hunger. In the evening I would come home without having eaten and put down my sensations on paper” (2).

The Harlequin as self-portrait of the artist is a long-established artistic tradition which Miro certainly knew, for example, from the work of Picasso. This painting is bisected vertically by a peculiar guitar-wielding female. It teems with symbols which have been shown to have explicit sexual reference for Miro. The large winged insect-like creature with a flamelike stem at the right is one of the many female silhouettes which Miro derived from the contours of a kerosene lamp. Harlequin’s woeful expression ironically belies the general riotous gaiety; he appears to suffer simultaneously from the pangs of unrequited hunger and the temptations of suggestive apparitions which flit cheerfully but tantalizingly just out of reach.

Other details are no so easily explained. The cones, spheres and carpenter’s triangles may recall de Chirico, then a major influence on the early Surrealists. The multitude of eyes, familiar especially from Ernst, underline the Surrealist insistence on the artist as visionary or seer. Most interesting, perhaps, is the dice. It has been shown by some writers as an oblique homage to the poet Mallarme’s important “Le Coup de des” (3). However, here it functions also as a jack-in-the-box, alongside the central female who appears to be partly constructed of a spring and activated by a Dadaistic wheel, crank and key. It is perhaps more than coincidence that the French philosopher Henri Bergson, often read by the Surrealists, considered the human imitation of mechanical movement to lie at the core of comedy and that one of his images was the jack-in-the-box.

The canvas is very thinly paint

Touch

Touch

"I'm not comfortable with that," she says. "Honesty exposes vulnerability."

This might be a veritably intense meeting of words for anyone. I'm musing silently and passing notes to spanish guitar chords that'll untie knots in my veins. She has her favourite dress on made of all the colours of peace and bellowing knowledge but her feet are kept unwise in borrowing those shoes. My eyes must do naught but guide with genuine care and platonic gold; supporting to understand what they are and failing to possess in tide. Teaching will forever teach anyone who seeks, but that has spun itself another web and shall return again...

"I do not find that the vulnerability lies as much in honesty as it does with its opposite. Dishonesty provides us an absurd and blazenly wasteful outlet of experience because our actions will eventually be shattered and called for what they were and the chaos that's ensued since, in its sly tangents. Whether you want to believe in true truths or that the world is devoid of any external or internal or whatever one'd consider, truth in translation from you to I or I to you or anyone for the matter at hand does receive priceless value from me at least, in that being vulnerable to any person in our honesty gives nothing up of ourselves as lost or damaged except wherein if we allow each the other to damage our minds because we can't handle it..."

I felt a pause and stroked my chin. I haven't broken from her gaze for an instant, though I do much better to speak without eye contact -- not that I do not like it or even prefer it, oh, soulseeing enchanters, but they and their surroundings can become a distraction to my thought processes, thus I break from it and must accept that this will affect everyone differently, that some will catch on and accept in return that it's what I must do sometimes. // You're so beautifully patient... perhaps as patient as I. I can't mask this crooked elated smile or eyes that divulge to float into you... ...but I catch myself and recalculate in what I feel I should say.

"People waste so much time deceiving themselves, deceiving others --- utterly paltry... If that we are to choose to fear ourselves so much we should ruminate through futures and features before they align themselves to becoming judicious--

"It's not so simplistic," she snapped.

"Indeed."

Heart of stone and bitten she rendered, once, "None say it the more, and still I find it so."

"and... so it is,"
abrupt curtain.

Neruda swam ashore, we'll whisk above til sunrise and some more.

This here is my friend Bianca. Not only is she a classy lady, but also a very talented musician. Before I left for school I shot some promo shots for her, but I only recently got around to fully editing them. School has been keeping me plenty busy, as well as Dodgeball on the side. Who knew that the only sport I was really good at would be Dodgeball? I also realized recently that people had been tagging me in photo's and I didn't even know. I very rarely look at my profile page, so I hadn't noticed all of the pictures I had been tagged in. So this is first and foremost an apology for neglecting my flickr buddies, but also my chance to properly take on the task of completing the "tagging game". I am honoured to have been tagged by such amazing photographers as Jessi [NJ], Kesunia & Jade . So here goes nothing...

1. I end everyday by watching Collegehumor videos. No matter how I am feeling, the random nature of the videos and often immature but intelligent nature of them makes me laugh everytime. Jake and Amir never cease to entertain.

2. I am a Journalism student at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. I was accepted to more widely recognized and prestigious schools, but I loved the small community feeling of Laurier and the interdisciplinary approach of the school.

3. I am a HUGE fan of Indie music of all sorts. Anything from jazz/big band groups like The Bamboos, to acoustic artists such as William Fitzsimmons, to classical violinist club musicians SomethinALaMode, to Indie punk rockers Isles & Glaciers.

4. I was formerly a child actor. I appeared in many commercials across North America, as well as being in several movies and professional stage shows. I was much too camera shy to make it as an actor, so I moved behind the lens.

5. I absolutely looove stale marshmallows! The only exception would be for s'mores!

6. I have seen every James Bond film several times. Each film is a time capsule to the cinema of the time and I love it!

7. I am quite possibly the worst Rock Band player of all time. I love playing real guitar though!

8. My celebrity soulmate is Selena Gomez :)

9. I am a huge Joss Whedon fan! If you have 45 minutes to spare, I cannot recommend Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog highly enough! It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day. Funny, touching and dorky beyond belief.

10. "I once was blind, but now I see". Many things have opened up my eyes over the past two years. I am a completely different person than I was. I look at everything in a much more positive light now :)

Thanks for reading guys and of course, thank you to all of those who have commented, messaged, tagged me and taken the time to look at my pictures! It really does mean a lot to me!
