Greenspan's is an 82 year old business near Los Angeles, CA, carrying classic style and hard to find clothing. They sell "dead stock", reproductions, in hard to find sizes and styles, piled to the ceiling of their South Gate, California store. Since the 70's they have specialized in the styles of the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's, in work casual, and dress men's categories. Theyhave sold clothes to many celebrities, movies, TV shows, videos, album covers, as well as many generations of Southeast Los Angeles County families Founded in 1928 in the nearby community of Watts. Greenspan's was run by Alex Greenspan (b.1899-d.1965), and Eva Greenspan (b.1899-d.1955). The Greenspan family lived in the back of their store from 1928 to 1939. The store was destroyed by fire after the 1933 Long Beach Earthquake, and was rebuilt by Alex Greenspan. In 1939 they started a second location, in the nearly growing city of South Gate. This location was run by Edward Greenspan (b.1926-d.2009). In 1944 the Watts location closed, and South Gate continued as their only store.In the 1950's Edward Greenspan designed The A-1 Pegger pants for the A-1 Kotzin Company, and he designed the "beach combers". He also sold Ed "Big Daddy" Roth his first T shirts to silk screen. In the 1970's Edward Greenspan began to buy huge volume of (then) unwanted cotton and wool clothing from the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. He would sell it to his customers who included lowriders, rockabillies, cholos, gang members, punks, who liked clothing styles that were fashionable before the 1970's. After the major studios downsized, and many sold off their own wardrobe department, Greenspan's began selling their older style clothes to Hollywood movie productions. Many movie wardrobers and costumers began looking to Greenspan's for brand new "period" wardrobe. Also boutiques on Melrose in LA, in San Francisco, stores from Europe and Japan, began buying clothing styles of the 40's and 50's. In the early 1990's. Greenspan's sold many vintage work and jail clothes to hip hop artists, like NWA (Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, and MC Wren,) Cypress Hill, Above The Law, and Compton's Most Wanted, who then went on to wear them on MTV, and created what became know in the fashion world as "West Coast Hip Hop" style clothing. Greenspan's had many customers in many niches, that liked to dress different than the mainstream. so over the years Greenspan's customers have included bikers, pachucos, "OGs", cholos, hippies, rude boys, rockabilly, hot rodders, lowriders, cruisers, greasers,.gang members and many other people who wanted to dress different from the crowd. Aside from the wide assortment of clothes including over 1,000 brands, Greenspan's has recently began authentically reproducing vintage style hats, coats, shirts, shoes, and pants. Some of the brands they carry are Pendleton, Stacy Adams, Zig Zag "winos", Levi's, Dickies (they were Dickies first California store,) Ben Davis, Hush Puppies, Stetson,Ooo Gee's by Greenspan's, Cascade, Greystone, Bailey Hats, Cotler, Foxfire, FR, Falcon Bay, Renegade, Dobbs, as well as Dyse One, OG Abel, Joker Brand, and Tribal Gear. They have many hard to find styles that have been discontinued like Imperials, Charlie Browns, OooGee red liners, initial stretch belts, car club coats, many out of production Pendleton board shirts, french toe shoes, clicker coats, romeos, bowling shirts, lowrider straw hats, two tone all leather wingtip shoes, boot cut twill jeans, county coats, and "th largest supply of...colors of the classic Pendleton 'Boardshirt' shirt in the world...the last original clothing store.1 They recently have collaborated with some California clothing companies. This canopy of light Part of the magnificent 1868 canopy of St Pancras International Station, built by William Henry Barlow and, at its time, the largest single-span structure in the world. This structure, and the rest of the magnificent and imposing Gothic architecture of the station, soon earned St Pancras the title of 'the cathedral of the railways.' Taken in London, England on October 10, 2009. Aspen Canopy Light I loved the way the evening sunlight penetrated the aspen forest canopy. The soft, warm light seemed to turn even warmer and more yellow under the cover of the bright yellow leaves. To me, this combination made for a wonderful fall-time scene. These images were taken from the Last Dollar Road near Telluride, Colorado. Statue of Liberty National Monument Viewed from the Staten Island Ferry, Upper New York Bay, New York City, New York, United States I believe this enterprise will take on very great proportions. If things turn out as I hope they will this work of sculpture will become of great moral importance. The sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi wrote these prophetic words in 1871, nearly fifteen years before his grand creation, the Statue of Liberty, was completed. The statue was intended to symbolize man's enduring belief in liberty, and to commemorate the long-standing friendship between the United States and France. It is, moreover, a monument to the idealism, perseverance, generosity, and hard work of people both here and in France who, like Bartholdi, had faith In the/'great moral importance" of the statue. With the passage of time the significance of the Statue of Liberty has deepened and expanded, until she has become the primary symbol of American liberty, independence and freedom. Standing in New York harbor, she has greeted millions of immigrants arriving in America, and thus has come to symbolize the hope for a better life in a new homeland, free from tyranny and oppression. Although Liberty has become quintessentially American, the idea for the statue originated in France. It was first suggested by Edouard-Rene Lefebvre de Laboulaye (1811-1683). Laboulaye was an historian, author, and the foremost French authority on American constitutional history. A great admirer of America, he had published a three-volume history of the United States, a satirical story "Paris in America", and numerous articles espousing the Union cause during the Civil War, He was the principal figure of a group of French intellectuals who, during the Second Empire, advocated Republican rule for France, They viewed American government as exemplary and took pride in the role played by Frenchmen such as Lafayette in the formation of the American republic. Thus, the initial idea from which the Statue of Liberty resulted was in keeping with Laboulaye's sentiments and political philosophy. At a dinner given by him in the summer of 1865 at his estate at Glatigny, near Versailles, Bartholdi, who was one of the quests, listened to a discussion concerning gratitude between nations. Labouiaye, emphasizing the friendship between France and America, commented, "If a monument to independence were to be built in America, I should think it very natural if it were built by united effort, if It were a common work of both nations,," Historical events at the time, especially in France but also in the United States, made the construction of such a monument an action of potential political significance. In America, the Civil War had just ended with the republic intact, but President Lincoln had been assassinated. The common people of France were profoundly disturbed by this tragic event, so much so that a public subscription was initiated to fund a gift to Mrs. Lincoln which would express the sympathies of the French people. A gold medal was made and inscribed with the words "Dedicated by the French Democracy to Lincoln". This tribute was opposed by the French monarchy then in power; the medal had to be struck in Switzerland and smuggled to the American embassy in France, Republicans such as Laboulaye, who opposed the monarchy of Napoleon III, no doubt deeply resented this act of suppression, directed against a memorial to a leader of a democracy. Laboulaye must have recognized that the construction of a great monument to Liberty would constitute a statement of strong political belief, one which would strengthen the image of republicanism in France. Thus, the construction of the Statue of Liberty had distinct propagandists overtones. By 1877, after much political turmoil, the ends sought by Laboulaye and other Republicans were achieved- monarchy was overturned and the Third Republic founded. By 1871 positive steps toward the creation of the statue were taken, Bartholdi, who never lost interest in the project, had however, been occupied in the political difficulties of France, He fought in the Franco-Prussian War and witnessed the heartbreak!ng loss of his native Alsace to the enemy. In 1871, the war at an end, he determined on the advice of Laboulaye to visit the United States. He sailed in June on the Pereire. armed with instructions and letters of introduction, and well-prepared to study America's reactions to the proposed monument. He travelled extensiveIy-**as far west as San Francisco-enjoying all that he encountered. He met with many prominent men, including President U, S, Grant, Senator Charles Sumner, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Everywhere he discussed the statue he received enthusiastic response. Upon his return to France in the fall he was able to report positively on American interest; he had, in addition, selected the site for the monument —Bedloe's Island in New York harbor, at the threshold of the New World. It was manufactured by the mastermind of diners, Fodero Dining Car Co (Joseph Fodero, who built NYC's legendary Empire Diner), and first operated by the Yannitsadis Brothers, and transported on site. It was announced that "money was no object," when it came to detailing and superb craftsmanship. The exterior is an outstanding example of the Environmental Style, and features stainless steel, wrap-around windows, groovy gold frame doors, corner entryway with stone & colored mansard roof, & decorative ornamentation gracing the top. The interior is elegant, featuring fine Greek wood fluted columns & moldings and coffered wooden-paneled walls (rare for a diner), wood ornamentation, recessed areas for chandeliers, etched mirrors with regal logos, stone, curtains, accoustic paneling, counter & stools with backrests, kitchen out back, carpeting, terrazzo tiles and wave-patterned terrazzo distinguishing circular wooden booth areas. Pat Fodero, son of Joseph Fodero, came up with the idea of circular booths to seat more patrons per table, and it was first popularized at the Forum Diner. It became the norm to build large to boost business. The interior portrays the Colonial style. It closed in spring 2007, marking the end of an era. Unfortunately, it was recently vandalized, but most architectural elements are intact, and the minimal damage is reversible. Preservationist Michael Perlman spared NYC's historic Moondance & Cheyenne Diners via transport, and now the Forum Diner can be yours, thanks to an agreement with the property owner. (15) Old Fort Erie - Officers Quarters The canopied folding bed made of mahogany with brass hinges in the Officer's Quarters belonged to Captain Nicholas (Michael) Toler Kingsley, Paymaster to the Kings 8th Regiment Foot. Originally from Ireland, he joined the 8th Foot Regiment 24 December 1802 and was stationed at Quebec City, Lower Canada. (His Majesty's Gentlemen: A Directory of Regular British Army Officers of the War of 1812. Sutherland, 2001) During the War of 1812 with United States, Nicholas was stationed at Fort George (Niagara-on-the-Lake) and later at the Fort George Blockade. He died of fever 15 Sept 1813 at the Four Mile Creek encampment (Fort George Blockade). His bed was returned to his wife Susan, in Quebec City. Captain Nicholas and Susan Kingsley had three children: Edwin, Sarah Anne and George. George Kingsley is my Great, great, great Grandfather. During the 1920's, the burying ground in which Nicholas Kingsley was interred was abandoned, and the remains of Nicholas and other members of his regiment were dug up. Nicholas was identified by the buttons and numbers on the uniform. News of this was published in the Toronto papers. Upon receipt of this news, a family member, Franklin Hardinge, located the folding bed. It was given for safekeeping to the Government of Canada and was eventually placed at Old Fort Erie. Landscape of Slavery provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary examination of the aesthetic motives and social uses of this art in the shaping of Southern history and culture. The contributors analyze depictions of white dominion, Southern affluence, and the idealizing nostalgia of the post-Civil War era as well as the black aesthetic that has developed as a dissident counterpoint to this tradition. Martha Turnbull brought back with her many plant samples and statues from a variety of places in Europe. The house is basically in the Federal style with Greek Revival additions such as the two-story front porch and side wings. The plantation is worth the tour just for the garden alone. Rosedown Plantation is on the National Register #01000765, and is also a National Historic Landmark. OK Computer, though, is a complicated and difficult record: an album about the way machines dehumanize people that's almost entirely un-electronic; an album by a British "new wave of new wave" band that rejects speed and hooks in favor of languorous texture and morose details; a sad and humanist record whose central moment is Thom Yorke crooning "We hope that you choke."
