I met him in the hostel in Aleppo and we clicked immediately, so he invited me to join him at the dig. getting there was already sort of a small adventure, what between finding the right bus station, the right minibus for the right price (my knowledge of arabic doesn't go much part counting to 10), the right point to be let off--and then hitching the ride for the last 20 miles, on the back of old trucks and motorcycles. and once I got there, had I had any romantic, Indiana Jones-like idea of the life of an archaeologist, I would have changed my mind immediately. in many ways, it's actually better: a simple house of straws and mud in the middle of a simple farming village, with grandma waking you by walking into your room offering you fresh milk or something. at the same time, life can be pretty hard there. the village officially doesn't exist, as it's too dangerously close to the artificial lake. and since it doesn't exist, it doesn't official have electricity. so when the unofficial electricity pinched from the nearby village goes out, and your generator is dead, even luxuries like a light to work by in the office, or a fridge to keep the few supplies, are gone too. and that's when the fun begins! far be it from the Syrians (or us!) to have the fun spoiled by something that small, we managed to spend a wonderful night dining by the light of a single lamp and billions of stars, looking down at the river where the most significant events in human history (from the first crop to the first alphabet) took place. and we spent the following day behaving like men should, which means taking part of interesting conversations about how to fix a generator engine.
