I'm concentrating on getting all the extra "cubies" emptied into the dumpster at this time, but it is tricky with the cold weather. My latest approach is to hang a large piece of denim off the end of the cubie. In the past I had made small denim filters, but they would clog up before the container would empty out. Now that I've increased the size of the denim filter to be 10x as much surface area I am able to empty a 5 gallon container of WVO in less than one hour. I still filter with a 2 micron paper filter before pumping the oil into gas tanks. This is a convenient way get the dirt out of the oil and make my paper filters last longer. Use coarse bags for initial filtering. Do not jump right to the 1 micron. It's a waste of money. Start with at least 100 micron and work your way down as many steps as possible. bags can be stuffed inside of each other for multiple micron size passes in one filtering session. About 34 bags can be fit onto an adapter head to use with a pump. if done right, you will need more coarse bags than fine bags. 1 micron bags should rarely have to be changed while 50 and 100 micron bags will need to be changed many times collecting the bulk of the debris. Let the coarse bags do all the work for your final filtering bags. When filtering WVO make sure the oil is at least 100 degrees so all fats are melted. Description: The potential of using supported liquid membrane (SLM) technique, combined with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) has been investigated for the determination of peptides in human blood plasma. The peptides studied were "D"LLeu"D"LPhe, MetLeuPhe, GlyLeuTyr and ValGluProIleProTyr. The carrier (Aliquat 336) was incorporated in membrane phase in order to facilitate the transport of investigated peptides. After extraction, the analyte-enriched acceptor phase was directly injected into an HPLC system for analysis. With SLM, high selectivity and efficiency were achieved for extraction of peptides in aqueous solutions. Lower extraction efficiency was obtained in plasma sample. The limiting factors were the presence of salts and proteins in blood plasma. The necessary of ultrafiltration application before the SLM was required in order to improve its stability. The minimum quantifiable concentration was 90-130ng/ml of the investigated peptides based on 0.5ml plasma. The standard curve was linear over the concentration range of 0.05-10@mg/ml. Thanks! :) Assignment: PCA106 – Non-Liquid Reflections Date: May 9-23, 2010 Image Tag: pca106 From: Lea and Luna (Lea) The Mission: Reflections are fun to capture, but doing so without water or the aid of any type of liquid is a bit more of a challenge. What it Took Looking at the world to find reflections that were not on water was cool. And, when paying attention, it was neat to see that they are everywhere. WIT was choosing which reflection to select and submit for the assignment, first. Work has been exceptionally heavy for the past month, so, making time to go out and shoot has been a challenge. All of my captures were from "in the moment" opportunities of everyday life (which, I guess, you could argue are the way images become inspired). I'm not in love with the ones I found, but am motivated to keep looking for reflections in interesting places to capture. The one submitted for the assignment is a building in downtown Baltimore when we had lunch last week (Baltimore has a ton of mirrored buildings, which I never noticed before this assignment, so thanks, Lea!). It has a totally reflective surface, is blue, and has outcroppings that make it reflect back on itself, which creates mirrors within mirrors, and an abstract feel. Post-processing included a significant crop to isolate the reflection, "auto enhance" under "quick fixes" in Aperture, and an additional .2 in vibrancy. The whole tank A 30 gallon freshwater planted tank. It was originally intended to be an amazon-type tank so yes the water is yellow and it's meant to be. It does house a Paradise Fish, an asian native, but they also like soft, acidic conditions. The other denizens are: 8 Bloodfin Tetras ? There are 4 opaline gouramis, 2 pearl gouramis, and two gold gouramis. There are also 6 tetras- 2 cardinals and 4 neons as well as 4 harlequin rasboras. I have 1 100w heater, a Fluval 205 canister filter, and an extra waterfall filter I have been too lazy to take off. All this filtration produces an INCREDIBLY clear tank. It's just so relaxing to watch them float around. Lost at Sea I was feeling a bit down today so I though a trip up to one of my favourite places was in order, Formby Beach, and I came across this little beauty. It had obviously been in the sea for a while as it was battered, bruised and holed, but I thought it would make quite a nice shot. All I had to do was roll up my trousers and wait for the tide to come in. Now here’s a warning kids, tripods and sea water don’t mix! The sand there was very fine and as soon as the tide came in, sand got washed into the joints and locked them solid, looks like I’ll have try to strip apart tomorrow. Oh, and another warning watch out for the tide, I was on an outer sandbar, and as soon as the tide topped over a low point in the bar it flooded behind me, luckily I was on the way back in, but in about five minutes the water reached knee deep! About the shot; It’s a HDR of three shots (-2, 0 +2) shot at F25 (you should have seen the amount of dust bunnies I had to clone out, I’m ashamed of how dirty my sensor is), then with stacked Hi-tech ND filters 0.6 + 0.9 (equivalent to 5 stops) @ 22mm (Canon 10-22). Basically to try to get the longest exposures possible, I think it worked quite well. I’ve got loads of them that haven’t worked, as the tripod kept sinking, and the waves kept moving the boat! But after getting some nice shots and splashing through the waves I feel much better :-) U.S. Ambassador Jerry P. IRON METEORITES Origin Iron meteorites have been linked to M-type asteroids since both types of objects have similar spectral characteristics in the visible and near-infrared wavelength regions. Iron meteorites are thought to be the fragments of the cores of larger ancient asteroids that have been shattered by impacts. The heat released from the radioactive decay of the short-lived nuclides 26Al and 60Fe is considered as a plausible cause for the melting and differentiation of their parent bodies in the early solar system.[4][5] The IIE chemical class may be a notable exception, in that they probably originate from the crust of S-type asteroid 6 Hebe. Chemical and isotope analysis indicates that at least about 50 distinct parent bodies were involved. This implies that there were once at least this many large, differentiated, asteroids in the asteroid belt – many more than today. Composition The overwhelming bulk of these meteorites consists of the Fe,Ni-alloys kamacite and taenite. Minor minerals, when occurring, often form rounded nodules of troilite or graphite, surrounded by schreibersite and cohenite. Schreibersite and troilite also occur as plate shaped inclusions, which show up on cut surfaces as cm-long and mm-thick lamellae. The troilite plates are called Reichenbach lamellae. The chemical composition is dominated by the elements Fe, Ni and Co, which make up more than 95%. Ni is always present; the concentration is nearly always higher than 5% and may be as high as about 25%.[7] A significant percentage of nickel can be used in the field to distinguish meteoritic irons from man-made products, which usually contain lower amounts of Ni, but it is not enough to prove the meteoritic origin (e.g. some US coins). Use The iron nickel alloy was used by several cultures for the manufacturing of tools and weapons. For example the Inuit used parts of the Cape York meteorite.[8][9][10] Fragments from Gibeon were used for centuries by Nama people. There are also reports of their use for manufacture of various items in Tibet (see Thokcha). Today meteoritic iron is used in niche jewellery and knife production, but most of it is used for research, educational or collecting purposes. Classification Two classifications are in use: the classic structural classification and the newer chemical classification. Structural classification The older structural classification is based on the presence or absence of the Widmanstatten pattern, which can be assessed from the appearance of polished cross-sections that have been etched with acid. This is connected with the relative abundance of nickel to iron. The categories are: Hexahedrites (H): low nickel, no Widmanstatten pattern, may present Neumann lines; Octahedrites (O): average to high nickel, Widmanstatten patterns, most common class.
