Week 19: Arnar Grant This is Arnar Grant. He is one of the or even THE fitness guys here in Iceland, has won the Icelandic championship several times over. Got this idea from a photo a friend of mine took where he superimposed the superman suit with photoshop on a guys naked torso. Well I wanted to take that to the next step and body paint the costume on a guy and Arnar was thankfully up to the task. I basically didn?t know him at all when I called him up a few weeks before shooting this but he loved the concept. He is just wearing the shorts and the cape, the rest is body painted on by Henny of course and our friend Eva Hronn who is also a makeup artist. It was easier than we thought, the most difficult part was getting the superman mark to look authentic. After shooting this me and Henny have now decided to maybe do a series of superheroes, going to do at least Hulk, Spiderman and Batman as well and all body painted. This was taken during the Reykjavik Arts Festival and there were smashed cars and stuff like that spread arount the city. Halfway through the shoot Arnar got the idea to go outdoors like this and pose around the city and if anyone is interested I might post a couple of those but I wanted a studio shot for this series. Lit this with four lights and a white bounce reflector. One big softbox from his right, a smaller one from behind him to the right, a honeycomb also from behind him from the left and a snoot shooting at the black backround to just barely lift it. The reflector was then to the left of him. Week 41: Marsý This is Marsibil Perla Dagbjartardottir, 18 years old and lives in Reykjavik. I don?t know her at all unlike most of the people I have shot for this series. She is a friend of a friend so when I asked that friend to model this week and she couldn?t do it she reccomended her friend Marsy. I didn?t really know what to expect but she turned out great, had lot?s of ideas and poses and was completely comfortable/natural in front of the camera, something I am not used to from people I have never met before. This photo was her idea, she thought (and me and Henny of course agree) having the makeup smudged like she?d been crying and then gotten angry was cool. Henny did the makeup for this photo as usual. Lighting is 4 lights, one big softbox from pretty much straight forward, two softboxes on either side behind for hair/rimlighting and a honeycomb at the backround for very slight separation. Oh and for the record, I?ll echo the statement I made on Gummi?s picture. Trust me, there are probably few people who dislike smoking more than me so this is not some kind of statement, I wish people would stop smoking altogether BUT I do think smoke looks cool in a photograph and that is that. Red eyes of Kathakali Performer Material used Chundappoo (Chunda Flower) ( Scientific Name : Solanum surattense / Solanum xanthocarpum) This flower is also called Punyaha Chunda as the flower is used for preparing Punyaham (Holy Water) in Kerala temples and household deities. This plant comes under the category of egg plant (Brinjal). Preparation The Ovule Receptacle (seed) part of the Chunda flower is used for Kathakali. After plucking the flowers which are fully or partly flourished, remove it's petals and green part around it's Ovule Receptacle (Seed) carefully. The seed shouldn't be scratched or broken. Then gently rub and roll the seed in your inner hand with a touch of cow ghee. First 30 minutes it need to be gently rubbed and later on increse the pressure. The effect of the flower during the performance depends on the time taken to rub and prepare the flower (Normally 3-4 hours). Then the seed becomes soft,dark brown or even black. Put that in a small air tight container along with some ghee (recommended for long term use). Else it can be stored in a roll of cloth and knot it tightly. Usage Once the facial makeup is over and just before starting the body costume, the performer need to put the flower seed in the eyes. He places his eyeballs up, and gently put the flower seed in lower eyelid. Then he gently pinches the lower eyelid and drag forward. The flower seed goes inside and stays there. The performer closes the eyes and roll his eyeballs. When he/she opens his eyes, the eyes turns red in colour. the look:eye closed So this was the big deal - after fretting & searching for the perfect look to contrast with a girly pink dress I decided on this! I used a white that turned out really to be an irridescent shimmary lilac as a base all over the lid to the crease White in the tear duct(inner corner of eye) to brighten up the eyes to get this purple I had to layer a sort of violet colour under a raspberry purple that looks like the fish net from the mac collection (I pulled up the raspberry puple colour to jus over the darker violet colour) the color swept up to extend up to meet the brow on end a sparkly black in the outer V of the eye a dark navy shadow in the crease black eyeliner thicker in the middle smudged outside in a yellow gold for highlight on brow bone extended down to meet the purple smoke & blend the whole works I used the navy blue shadow to line the outer portion of the lower lash line until about the middle of it then the violet (deeper purple) in the inner portion of the lash line. smoke it in(means smudge it inwards from outer portion of lower eyelid to inner portion) black eye liner in the water line & black mascara on both lower & upper lashes to finish the look!! viola! perfect edgy purple eyes with jus a touch of girlishness.... it looks like a lot but it only took me about 5 minutes on prom night to do this (I only had that much time to get it done anyway) really , its the truth I swear - you only hav to know what you're doing! New eyes all I received my third bjd today! Nicolle's twin sister Michelle :D and 4 pair of glass eyes from a DoA group order. Also this is Michelle's default faceplate which I painted last week but didnt post it till now. I wanted Michelle's makeup be the same as Nicolle's. And I think I made quite a good job at it. They do really look like twin sisters :D On a side note I am very happy that I started getting some interest in faceup commissions. I am waiting for 9 heads to be shipped, more than half of them Unoas :P Doll: I didnt take any pictures of her because she needs a very good wash, restringing, sanding and bleaching (her resin is much more yellow than Nicolle's). So tomorrow after I submit all my assignments and I finish with this semester, I will jump to the and buy some rubbing alcohol to soak her body for some days. Eyes: these eyes were ordered in a group order on DoA ^^ I thought that the purple ones would be the same as Nicolle's but it turns out they are much darker (and bigger than the other 12mm-i think they made a mistake but oh well). I rarely wear make-up unless I go out somewhere other than the grocery store, etc. We had a Studio 54 (I think that's the name of the movie) party when I was a Hooters girl in Roanoke, VA and we had all this flashy disco looking stuff and I wore this as part of my attire. I had a boa, a bright pink dress, patent leather platform boots, bangle bracelets and a huge white curly wig. It was awesome. So here is the leftovers...I don't think I have used this since... What Makeup Looks Good On Me
what is best? Been thinking again this week... never good for me :) I answered a question a few weeks ago and it's been nagging on my mind ever since. the question: do you have to look your best to be the best? to which I glibbly replied, 'I think you just have to act like you're at your best but I haven't been able to let it go. because, what does looking or doing your best really mean? what does it mean to just act like you're doing your best? Then I went to the A2 Folk Fest and got really depressed over the question. why? because if you've ever been to the folk fest you know how amazing and outstanding those musicians are... I feel that way about every artist I see at work: amazed at their abilities and talent. and at the folk fest I was happy to see a number of groups I'd never heard of before. what struck me most was that none necessarily looked what might be considered their 'best'. a few were pretty darn crunchy and odd... which I happen to love, mostly b/c I tend to be crunchy and odd ;) anyway, i decided then that looking your best was really just a personal opinion... you might not look good to anyone else, but that has no bearing on whether or not you're doing your best. The harder question was in the connotation of my reply- do you only pretend to be at your best when you know you're not there or not ever going to get there? No person on that folk fest stage was pretending to be their best- I can promise you that! And so I got sad that maybe that response rests in mediocracy; in being mediocre. that perhaps pretending to be at your best is the only way one can survive mediocracy. Because being mediocre is not given enough credit. I think we should give people more credit for accepting their mediocracy, because it's not easy to do. So anyway; I don't wear makeup. I own it, but I don't feel comfortable in it. It's itchy and feels fake on my face. It might look better to some, but with it on I am NEVER at my best. But I pretended today, just to make a point :) week 14/52 Even if what you see isnt good in it, it doesnt mean its useless.. Quite the difference!!! ...352/365 Even when 10 or 30 your still learning life it seems... And when your with your own nose on it close you cant see it... Sometimes you kinda get lost on the way.. So hard busy prooving to your self that things are great... That somewhere you lost track.. You know it, but dont know where you lost it.. Sometimes a friend and a few lines makes you relise where it went wrong.. I was running and running, keeping my self busy to the extreem.. still never finding what i wanted kinda.. Running to proof... look at me my life is exciting and a blast, kinda prooving things to others and mostly my self.. I lost my self in that.. and i needed a eye opener that waked me up.. Even this 365.. finding more strange places, keeping pushing bounderys to get more pictures of places and things... thanks so much for the mail.. Yeah, i need to admit.. i lost my self in all this.. and not able to stop running, cos i coudnt see where it was wrong!!! So i made a prommisse... i dont need to proof shit to no one.. I will stop running.. what the hell i need to proof anyways? I think i have proofed enough to my self last 2 years.. Its time to act more 30 i guess... sestle more down and not always pretend life is one party for me.. Because its never all party for anyone.. And admitting that.. gave me already 50% peace... There for also this easy picture.. naked no makeup of adds, and honest in a mirror looking treuly to yourself ;) and no crazy shit... SOmetimes crazy is good but not running passing yourselfs and be crazy 24/7 was my wakeupcall... (even though im not planning on going on the borring mom way.. hell no!!! Just a bit less and in right proportions ;D ) And that i know now, i realy can close somethings.. im over them.. Again something that i learned cos of my 365 in a way...
