Noosa River Accommodation
Built in 1957 to meet the needs of the timber industry, Harry's hut has enjoyed a colourful history of worker's hardships and playful recreation.
As logging of the largely inaccessible forests east pf the upper Noosa River boomed in the early 1950s, sawn logs were transported by truck, south alongside the river's tea tree coloured waters. From the landing opposite Harry's hut the logs were winched across the river by crane. A sling was then wrapped around the log, lifting it from the water and stacking it on the river bank ready for transport to the Tewantin sawmill.
Originally built by Alan Buchanan and Norm Thrush in their spare time, the hut was home to timber cutters who were required to stay on site permanently. It also provided comfortable accommodation for timber cutters moving through the area.
So who was Harry?
The tranquil setting alongside the river attracted the local Cooroy pharmacist, Harry Spring, who regularly ventured to the hut with friends. During logging operations they often pitched a tent nearby and fished for bass. Harry went on to purchase the hut from Tewantin Sawmills when the crane operation ceased in the early 1960s, and obtained a lease from the Forestry Department for one acre of land surrounding the structure.
Today Harry's hut is a listed and protected cultural site managed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
