shadehouse backyard test In two weeks I'll be in Black Rock City for Burning Man 2006. It will be my second year at Burning Man and my friend Rob's fourth year. Last year the only relief we had in our camp from the brutal desert sun was the shade cast by our rented minivan, which usually didn't amount to much. This year we're taking along a lightweight, prefab shade structure. It's 12x12 feet, and hopefully it will provide enough shade for us to catch a break from the midday sun once in awhile. The Kelty Shadehouse 12 is like a tent with no walls, and I pitched it in the back yard to get a feel for the setup. It went up fairly easily, although I got stuck for awhile because I failed to follow the included directions. bamboo system Chad had the bamboo pieces (which we'd been collecting for over a year) all lined up in the alley based on size. Ruffled Glass Shade with Black or Dark Grey Trim A lamp shade found at a local thrift store, in the vase section. Very, very dirty. Cleaned it up. I thought it might be a Fenton, but now, I'm leaning more toward late 1800's/early 1900's gas lamp. It is definitely 100% blown glass. Going to do more research. 2/27/09 - not having much luck in finding out when this was made. Consensus of a couple of folks say around the 1940s. tulip shade A reproduction arts & crafts period tulip shade inside the front door. This little shade is unbelievably beautiful with green, gold and pink iridescent glass. Hand made. 1920's ceiling fixture Many moons ago, this light fixture was removed from my childhood home to make way for a fancy (but simple) crystal chandelier. This fixture was original to the home which was built in 1920. It languished in the garage at my mother's old home for years, even decades. When she sold the house to move into a bungalow (for the benefit of her aching knees) I claimed the fixture for my own. I recently had it refurbished by a fellow at Aberfoyle Antique Market for a very reasonable price. Yesterday, finally, about 5 years later, we installed it in our dining room. I love the style and the fact that it is a link back to my past. It suits the Mission Style dining room quite nicely. Ceiling Fixture Box According to code, plaster has to come up to the box. Since the contractors weren't contracted to do anything the the upstairs ceilings, I had to do this myself with some fiberglass tape and joint compound. Tomorrow I'll sand then I'll stick up my ceiling medallions. I've shown no such restrain in creating this luscious cuff. Contemporary Striped Italian Dupioni Silk features a Venetian Satin Rose embellished with TONS of sparkly Glass Cubes and a delish trim of Faux Pearls upon Brass. Flirty ruffles to the left are composed from a blend of Velvet Chiffon Prints paired with Black Scalloped Lace. Signature touches of rock queen chains adorn a king's ransom of gems namely Pink Topaz Bell Chandeliers, Labradorites, Mystic Pink Amethyst Briolettes, exquisite Pink Sapphires and utterly droolworthy Mystic Pink Amethyst Briolettes. To left and right sides, more chains drape in a seemingly random fashion but WAIT, when viewed from the side, they form sexy structured loops [see bottom right image in Picture 3]. Gotcha!! Yet more chains cavort amidst a decadent frou frou hem of Black Lace to complete this opulent confection. Equally luxe on the inside, this wristwrapper has been lined with new Taffeta. She measures 7" wide by 7.5" in height, and secures with hooks/eyes affixed to Grosgrain straitjacket-esque straps (hence the name) that are totally adjustable. Having said that, she best suits wrists measuring no smaller than 6", ensuring a comfy, snug fit. STRAITJACKET FOR A STRUMPET is seamless as clearly evidenced from the pictures, with the exception of selected portions that have been intentionally prettied-up with fancy stitches. All fabrics and findings used in Sheela Goh Couture designs (unless indicated otherwise) are truly antique, with some bits being over 100 years old. Seriously. So please, do wear her with care and respect. OOAK. Dry clean only. Those old single pane windows really let a lot of heat and air conditioning escape. 3. Change the filters in air conditioners and furnaces. Not only does it keep systems running at optimum efficiency, it keeps the air in your home cleaner too. 4. Place window air conditioners on the shadiest side of the house. It won't have to work as hard and will use less power. 5. Make sure air conditioners and furnaces are the right size. Too small, it has to work too hard. Too large and they lose their efficiency, therefore using even more electricity. 6. Have regular checkups performed on systems. This keeps things running smoothly and could catch a problem before it's too late. Like the middle of that unexpected snow storm, or hottest ever day of the summer. 7. Keep weeds and shrubs trimmed. Keep them away from outside heating/cooling units for best airflow. 8. Plant shade trees. This is especially important on the side of the house that gets the most sun. 9. Use timers to turn lights on and off. For when you're not around, it's better than leaving a light on constantly, and also works to fool burglars. 10. Use compact fluorescent bulbs. Although they cost a little more than regular bulbs, they last up to 10 times longer and use a lot less electricity to burn. 11. Unplug appliances and electronics. Some of these items tend to keep using a little electric even when turned off. 12. Adjust the temperature before leaving the house or going to bed. Or better yet, install a programmable thermostat. It will eventually more than pay for itself. Striped Silhouette This shot reminds me of big foot photos for some reason. I liked this one. Fleece lined greenhouse with heated frame and rooted cuttings The frame (enveloped in polythene in the corner there) is still heated with a cable and no doubt helps to keep the greenhouse frost free. (It didn't help much last year mind.) A few shrubs root well if left in the frame over winter (mytles for example). I learned last year not to pot them them up until spring, even if they're well rooted. The disturbance can be fatal at this time of year. I discovered yesterday that mice have been burrowing around in the cuttings frame, making tunnels and hills and generally redeveloping the neighborhood. It must have been nice and cosy for them in there. I'd let it dry out a bit too much so it was my fault. I have no idea how many animals there are in my greenhouse. I found a mouse nest recently behind the potting tray and last year there was a rat nest among the pots. One of the benches is slowly sinking at one corner due to undermining by something. There were a lot of moles in the garden last summer but it might be the rats again. Strangely though, despite all this activity there's been very little damage (touch wood). No signs of rummaging in the seed pots (the seeds are stored in the fridge). It would be different no doubt if I grew a lot of bulbs. greenhouse Construction begins on the greenhouse on top of the New Science Building. The new greenhouse has three growing rooms, or climate-controlled environments, compared to the two rooms that the previous greenhouse had. "Independent heating and evaporative cooling systems for each growing room will be computer controlled," Giesmann said. "Environments can be regulated to accommodate plants from tropical to desert climates." An automatic system will regulate sun exposure in the growing rooms using high quality shade cloth. This curtain-like system will produce higher quality plants, reduce heating/cooling costs, and provide a more comfortable work environment, according to Blake. The shade cloth is an improvement from the old greenhouse in Founder's Hall, which had to be sprayed with shading compound every year. "So, no painting panels," Blake pointed out. "That's a plus." No accounting for taste This building must have looked something in its heyday, with the blue shutters and that gaudy ad. Reputedly (via Wikipedia) Dubonnet is a favourite beverage of: - The French Foreign Legion; - Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who liked gin and Dubonnet: 30% gin, 70% Dubonnet with a slice of lemon under the ice. She once noted before a trip, "...I think that I will take two small bottles of Dubonnet and gin with me this morning, in case it is needed..."; and - Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who also likes a Dubonnet and gin before lunch every day (allegedly). I've often wondered when these painted ads date from. This one appears to be signed (bottom right corner, continuing over the door lintel) with a series of dates - earliest date I can read is 1955 and the latest is 1965, I think. If you squint, you can just about make out an earlier layer with the slogan "DUBO, DUBON, DUBONNET" written diagonally. Thanks to photocillin for the title inspiration. Once upon a time..... I have been able to upload my photos from my camera to my iPad and then e-mail them to flickr. It seems that every day new photo processing apps appear for the iPad. This little cottage shot was edited in PhotoForge- my favorite so far. Like a Dream I went to Tsinghua University today again, with my sister this time. The weather was gorgeous. Like every other time, I really enjoyed myself walking around the campus. I wish I could live there sometime. I shelved my SLR 680 for a long time. But today I picked it up again since the other two SX-70 cameras were both unavailable. I disliked the sharp pictures of SLR 680 a lot, but today I was amazed to find it performed spectacularly under bright sun. The green grasses obtained a stunning texture through its lens. I think I will use my dear SLR 680 more often in the future. Sorry for ignoring you honey. I will try to make it up. Apedale Valley Apedale Country Park in Staffordshire. I played with this photo for quite a while to get the effect that I wanted (the background almost looks like a cityscape at night to me).
