Philadelphia Empire Furniture

This volume looks closely for the first time at Philadelphia Empire furniture and the development of decorative arts in Philadelphia between 1800 and 1840. The authors explore Neo-Classicism, contemporary history of Philadelphia, the emergence of Greek-Revival architecture, and the cabinetmakers of Philadelphia Empire furniture. The furniture illustrated in this comprehensive catalogue comes from various sources, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Atheneum of Philadelphia, the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The White House Historical Association, and from many private collections.

At the beginning of the 19th century Greek-inspired architecture gained popularity in Philadelphia and the city became known for its classically-inspired monumental buildings. Newly designed structures of ancient inspiration were decorated with classical furniture that became the prevailing style in private homes as well as public buildings.

The arrival of immigrant craftsmen from Europe in the early 19th century and their subsequent collaboration with American furniture makers produced highly sophisticated Empire designs. Neither French nor English, the designs incorporated purely American elements and became known as American Empire. Nineteenth-century Philadelphia Empire craftsmen were particularly well-known for their extensive motif carving, which often has a fluid, three-dimensional character.

Philadelphia Empire Furniture illustrates in color and describes in detail hundreds of Philadelphia decorative art forms from this period, including wood types, dimensions, and maker (if known). Chapters are dedicated to each of the following forms: card tables, platform pedestal tables, pier tables, worktables, sofas, chairs, sideboards, secretaries, chests, bedsteads, looking glasses, clocks, and other decorative elements. A separate chapter is devoted to the previously unpublished sketchbook of accomplished craftsman Anthony G. Quervelle. Besides Quervelle, other talented and successful Philadelphia furniture makers included Michel Bouvier, Charles White, Cook & Parkin, and Joseph B. Barry, among several. This book provides historical data about their lives and careers.

Interior

Interior from the choir loft of St. Anthony's Catholic Church at 256 N. Ohio in Wichita Kansas. Built in 1902-1905 by the German Catholic community to serve the German speaking population in the parish. It is considered the oldest catholic church in Wichita. Originally called St. Boniface the parish was founded in 1886. It was renamed in 1902 when the present church was built.

The stained glass windows are very rare. They cannot be replaced today. The pigment is burned into the glass and the process is no longer used today. The windows were made in Germany, packed in straw, loaded on boats and shipped to America. Once in Wichita, workman followed a diagram to piece the windows together. Most of the inscriptions on the windows are in German.

Started as a German-speaking church the parish is now predominently Vietnamese. It is reported that the unique steeple sometimes served as a landmark for early Wichita aviators. The interior decoration was completed in 1909 and restored in 2005. St. Anthony of Padua Church is one of Wichita's most beautiful buildings inside and out. It is a Wichita treasure that needs continued preservation.

Ext. Mojave Phone Booth, Day

Ext. Mojave Phone Booth, Day

A long, long time ago, I can still remember
how there was a phone booth in the middle of the Mojave Desert.

And I knew if I had my chance, I would visit it and call work from it,
since they had an 800 number at my work.

A late August night made me shiver, between the so-called "roads" and the suprisingly cold weather.
Good news at the road's end, I met a couple of new friends...
[that's Mr. Deuce pictured.]

I vaguely remember weeping inside
when I read that SBC declined
to keep it open in the face of growing wireless coverage,
the day the phone booth died.

Bill

My Grandmothers brother Bill with his army buddies in North Africa 1942.

He was captured in North Africa, held prisoner in Piancenze, Italy for some time and then marched by the retreating Germans to Germany. This was called 'The Long March'.

His tank was hit head on by a shell and because he was the driver his head was split open down the middle of his face. The Germans treated him very well apparantly, treating his wounds.

The Germans forced his own crew to stand round his body to keep the sun off him as he lay in the desert.

BELOW STREET LEVEL : Portraits by Treiops Treyfid

BELOW STREET LEVEL : Portraits by Treiops Treyfid

BELOW STREET LEVEL : Portraits by Treiops Treyfid

Artillery and Ammo does it again with a brand new show "Below Street Level". Treyops Treyfid has come out swinging with a new collection of portraits from the tragically beautiful streets of LA.

OPENING RECEPTION MAY 1st 7:00 - 12:00 ... it's FEEE
1162 Glendale Blvd. Echo Park Ca. [by the Echo Plex]

About the show :

"Treiops Treyfid has set his sights on his friends in the local LA art scene as subjects for his upcoming portraiture project and solo show at Artillery and Ammo Gallery in Echo Park. An entire body of new work will be displayed. The simple, posed portraits give Treyfid the excuse to explore his library of materials combining them in new and different ways. The new artworks are put upon surfaces salvaged from the sides of roads and garbage bins. Old cheap furniture, thrown away doors, ripped out wall board, broken glass and mirror are among the humble surfaces used. The dramatic works are rife with stains, dirt, rips, drips, splashes, slashes, dust, scrapes, breaks, cuts, and tape. An often present element in the new works is the grid which Treyfid uses to reign in a sense of order in a chaotic milieu of detritus. Treyfid employs the use of the spray paint stencil to good effect in the new mixed media pieces, a technique long and often used in his past artworks. These new works are particularly well suited to the new gallery under the Sunset overpass in Echo Park. A new below street level venue in a dark, dirty, gritty city environment. "

curated by Deryke Cardenaz

While I was taking photos and Isac was reading, a strange old woman walked in and announced, "No cost to look!"

Isac and I were cautious as she cracked some joke about the giant sheep sized cat statue and walked through the store repeating how, "It's cheap to look!".

After a particularly funny comment she made about something or other, we relaxed.

She walked out of the store and we said our goodbyes and she was replaced by a man in a overly thought out hipster hell outfit. He kept his mirrored sunglasses firmly pushed up his nose while strutting through the store and making wide sweeping glances at the goods.

He asked me, "Has anyone ever told you, you look like Jonny Mitchell?"

"You mean Joni Mitchell?" I replied, "No."

"What? You hang out with fucking blind people?" He laughed as his own joke. I turned my head slowly in disbelief towards Isac's stunned gaze.

Mirrored sunglasses dude sauntered as best his could in his tight polyester Wranglers out the door.

I was hoping his would trip on his way out.

Why does that only happen in movies?

KRAKÓW - Saint Antoninus

KRAKÓW - Saint Antoninus

St. Antoninus was born in 1389. His parents, named Nicholas Pierozzi and Thomassina, were noble citizens of that place, and he was the only fruit of their marriage. From the cradle he was modest, bashful, docile, and had no inclination but to piety, being even then an enemy both to sloth and to the amusements of children. It was his only pleasure to read the lives of saints and other good books, to converse with pious persons, or employ him in prayer, to which he was much given from his infancy. Accordingly, if he was not at home or at school, he was always to be found at St. Michael's church before a crucifix, or in our Lady's chapel there. And whether he applied himself to that holy exercise in his closet or the church, he always kneeled or lay prostrate, with a perseverance that astonished everybody. By the means of a happy memory, a solid judgment, and quick penetration, assisted by an assiduous application, he became an able master at an age when others scarce begin to understand the first elements of the sciences. But his passion for learning was not equal to his ardour to perfect himself in the science of salvation. In prayer, he begged nothing of God but his grace to avoid sin, and to do his holy will in all things. F. Dominic, a learned and holy preacher of the order of St. Dominic, afterwards made cardinal, archbishop of Ragusa, and legate of the Holy See, was then employed in building a convent at Fiesoli, two miles from Florence.

Antoninus was wonderfully delighted with the unction of his sermons, and never went out of Florence but to converse with that apostolic man, to whom he applied at last for the Dominican habit. The father judging him as yet too young, and his constitution too tender for so strict a life of perpetual abstinence, frequent fasts, long watches, and other rigours, advised him to wait yet some years, and bid him first study the canon law, adding, that when he should have learned Gratian's decree by heart, his request should be granted. So dry and difficult a task would have seemed to another equivalent to an absolute refusal. However, Antoninus set about it, and joining prayer and severe mortifications with his studies, made an essay of the ]life to which he aspired; and in less than a year presented himself again to the prior of Fiesoli; and by answering his examination upon the whole decree of Gratian, gave him a surprising proof of his capacity, memory, and fervour. The prior hesitated no longer, but gave him the habit, he being then sixteen years of age. The young novice was most exact in complying with every point of the rule, and appeared the most humble, the most obedient, most mortified, and most recollected of his brethren.

Being advanced to the priesthood, he augmented his exercise of piety; he was never seen at the altar but bathed in tears. Whether sick or well, he day always on the hard boards; and so perfectly had he subjected the flesh to the spirit, that he seemed to feel no reluctance from his senses in the service of God. He was chosen very young to govern the great convent of the Minerva in Rome, and after that, was successively prior at Naples, Cajeta, Cortona, Sienna, Fiesoli, and Florence: in all which places he zealously enforced the practice of the rule of St. Dominic, and more by his actions than words. Besides his domestic employments he preached often, and with great fruit. The works which he published increased his reputation. He was consulted from Rome, and from all quarters, especially in intricate cases of the canon law. The learned cardinal de Lucca reckons him among the most distinguished auditors or judges of the Rota, though we do not find at what time he discharged that office. He was chosen vicar or general superior of a numerous reformed congregation in his order. He would not remit anything in his austerities or labours when exhausted by a decay, of which however he recovered. Pope Eugenius IV called him to the general council of Florence; and he assisted in quality of divine at all its sessions, and at the disputations with the Greeks. During his stay at Florence he was made prior of the convent of St. Mark in that city, for which Cosmus of Medicis, called the father of his country, was then building a sumptuous church, which pope Eugenius IV. consecrated. After having established in this house the true spirit of his order, he visited his convents in Tuscany and Naples.

While employed in introducing the primitive discipline of his order in the province of Naples, the see of Florence became vacant by the death of its archbishop. The intrigues of several candidates protracted the election of a successor. But Pope Eugenius IV. no sooner named F. Antoninus to the Florentines, as possessed of the qualities they had desired in their future bishop, namely, sanctity, learning, and experience, and his being a native of their own city, than they all acquiesced in his choice. Antoninus, who had then been two years absent from Florence,

Seligmann, Kurt (1900-1962) - 1952 Autumn (Christie's New York, 2005)

Oil on canvas; 76.2 x 63.5 cm.

Kurt Seligmann was a Swiss-American Surrealist painter and engraver. Born in Basel he was the son of a successful Furniture Department store owner. After study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Geneva, and several unhappy years working in his father's business in Basel, Seligmann left for Paris where he looked up his old friends from Geneva, the sculptor Alberto Giacometti and the art critic Pierre Courthion. Through Giacometti he met Hans Arp and Jean Helion, who admired his sinister biomorphic paintings and invited him to join their group, Abstraction-Creation Art Non-Figuratif. In the mid-1930s his work began to take on a more baroque aspect, as he animated the prancing figures in his paintings and etchings with festoons of ribbons, drapery and heraldic paraphernalia. It was about this time (1935) that he married Arlette Paraf, a granddaughter of the founder of the Wildenstein Gallery. Together they traveled extensively, first around the world (a year-long honey-moon trip in 1936) and then to North America and British Columbia (1938). In 1937, Seligmann was formally accepted as a member of the Surrealist group in Paris by Andre Breton, who collected his work.

At the outbreak of World War Seligmann was the first European Surrealist to arrive in New York, ostensibly for an exhibition of his work. Once there, he began a concerted effort to aid his Surrealist colleagues left behind in France and bring them to safety. Seligmann's art continued to evolve and really matured in the 1940s in the United States, where he did his best work. Beginning in 1940, he and Arlette lived at the Beaux Arts Building at 40th Street in New York, and later acquired a farm north of the city in the hamlet of Sugar Loaf, in Orange County. Seligmann befriended many American artists and became a close friend of the art historian Meyer Schapiro. With Schapiro as author, he produced in 1944 a limited edition set of six etchings illustrating the Myth of Oedipus, surely his masterpiece in this medium and one of the greatest works of Surrealist printmaking. As the Surrealists' expert on magic, he also wrote The History of Magic : The Mirror of Magic (Pantheon Books, 1948). Mythology and esoterica always informed the fascinating and turbulent imagery of his "dance macabre" paintings, and his work began to be exhibited widely and acquired by museums throughout the United States and Europe after the war.

Seligmann taught for many years at various colleges around New York, particularly at Brooklyn College, from which he retired in 1958. The changing nature of the New York art world toward an embracement of Abstract Expressionism caused his work to be relegated to past history. Due to illness, he gave up his New York apartment and retired to his farm, where he died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1962.

Colonial House in fall

Colonial House in fall

This early 18th-century gambrel roof farmhouse and tavern near the Delaware River was owned by Garret Johnson, who operated a 490-acre colonial plantation and a ferry service across the river in the 1700s. The house was likely used briefly by General Washington and other officers at the time of the Christmas night crossing of the Delaware. The keeping room, bedchamber and textile room are furnished with local period pieces, probably similar to the furniture used by the Johnson family from 1740 to 1770.

En route to Susie's opening at GRNY, there was a kerfuffle in a hair salon on 9th St. We stopped to see what the squealing was about. A squirrel had run into their shop and was hiding behind something in the back storage area. Not that I'm obsessed with rodents or anything, but we'd been feeding squirrels that morning and had some nuts in our bags. So we went in to try to coax him out. He was too freaked out for that to work, though. We moved some small pieces of furniture around and a woman from the shop next door waved a towel at him and this tiny little black squirrel raced out and into the street. He hightailed it to a tiny gated area across the way and took refuge under the garbage can. Poor critter.

We tossed him some nuts and hope he had a calmer night.

This shot by an unknown photographer shows the SS Atlantic of Home Lines in drydock at an unknown location. She was originally built as the 'Malolo' by William Cramp of Philadelphia and was a passenger ship of 17,232 grt delivered to her owners, Matson Line in 1927 for use on that company's service from San Francisco to Honolulu, as well as undertaking cruises to destinations further afield, such as Fremantle, Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland and Fiji. In 1937, her owners decided to rebuild the ship and following the refit, she was renamed 'Matsonia' and continued on her old route until 1941 when she was requisitioned by the US Government for use as a troopship during World War 2.

In 1948, her trooping duties at an end, she was laid up as her owners had purchased a new vessel to continue her peacetime duties and was soon transferred to Mediterranean Lines, a Panamanian flagged subsidiary of Home Lines and given the new name of 'Atlantic.' She was refitted in Genoa and was used on the service from Genoa, Naples and Barcelona to New York from 1949. In 1952, she was transferred to the Southampton and Le Havre to Canada service as well as cruising from New York to the Caribbean.

In 1955, she was transferred to another Home Lines subsidiary, the National Hellenic American Line and renamed 'Queen Frederica' and was used on the service from Piraeus via Naples and Palermo to Halifax and New York and remained on this service until 1958, when she sailed from Naples to Australia with Italian migrants, returning to Piraeus.

In 1965, she was sold to Chandris Lines, retaining the same name and was used on services to Australia as well as the service from Piraeus to New York, with cruising being on the agenda during winter months. In later years, she was used exclusively as a cruise ship and remained in service until July 1977, when she was finally sold to Greek shipbreakers for scrapping at Eleusis after a 50 year career, which is impressive for any ship.

You: Staying Young: The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty

You: Staying Young: The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty

International bestselling authors of YOU: The Owner's Manual and YOU: On a Diet give you all the tools and know-how to stay young and defy the ageing process. Drawing lively parallels between your body and aspects of city life, Drs Roizen and Oz show you how to balance your 'biological budget' to ensure your life is long and strong. Million-copy-bestselling authors, Michael F. Roizen, M.D. and Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., explain the mysteries of ageing and how you can dramatically slow the process to live a longer, more vibrant life. Written with their irrepressible quirky humour and granite-solid research, YOU: Staying Young is set to become the definitive manual to remaining young, fit and healthy. If your body is a city, the authors explain, it is up to you as mayor, resident and street cleaner to ensure it remains a vibrant city -- after all, who wants to live in a run-down, one-horse town? We all have different genes that influence us in same the way as cities are affected by different geographies. However, it is the way in which a city is run and the residents treat it that have the most overwhelming influence. Posing as local inspectors, Roizen and Oz club together to tackle your city's education system (stem cells), power plants (mitochondria), electrical grids (brains), transportation routes (blood vessels), landfills (fat), and parks (skin). They then give you the tools to clean up your act and turn your city back into the cutting-edge, party destination everybody will want to see. Look after your body and it will look after YOU.

The body is the most fascinating machine ever created, and nobody talks about it in ways that are as illuminating and compelling as Dr. Michael Roizen and Dr. Mehmet Oz. Most people think of the aging of our bodies the same way we think of the aging of our cars: the older we get, the more inevitable it is that we're going to break down. Most of us believe that at age 40 or so, we begin the slow and steady decline of our minds, our eyes, our ears, our joints, our arteries, our libido, and every other system that affects the quality of life (and how long we live it). But according to Dr. Roizen and Dr. Oz, that's a mistake.
Aging isn't a decline in our systems. It's actually very purposeful. The very systems and biological processes that age us are designed to help us when we're a little bit younger. So what's our role as part of the aging population? To learn how those systems work so we can reprogram them to work the way they did when we were younger. Your goal should be: die young at any age. That means you live a high quality of life (with everything from working joints to working genitals) until the day you die.
At the core of this landmark book are the Major Agers--14 biological processes that control your rate of aging. Some you've heard of, some you haven't, and some you never knew contributed to the aging process. Some speed decline, others inhibit your repair mechanisms. These Major Agers are everything from short telomeres and inefficient mitochondria to stem cells and wacky hormones. The doctors explain the principles of longevity and many of the causes of aging and how to fight the effects. The climax of the book is a 14-day plan to help you along your path to staying young. The doctors want you to be able to integrate important processes into your daily life in order to make staying young routine, but first you'll need to measure your real age and health right now. Staying young encompasses your emotions and mental health as well as your exercise habits, eating habits, personal hygiene, and genes, among other things.
Wouldn't you like to know how to prevent your body from aging badly? The original YOU book showed how bodies work in general, and YOU: On a Diet explained how bodies lose weight and stay fit. Now in YOU: Staying Young, Drs. Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz illuminate the mysterious mechanisms with a lively metaphor -- the modern city. What differentiates a vibrant and thriving city that ages gracefully from one that is worn down and rusted out? Despite genetic differences, which are like the geography upon which the city is built, cities age differently because of the way residents treat their education system (stem cells), power plants (mitochondria), electrical grids (brains), transportation routes (blood vessels), and landfills (fat). You -- as mayor, resident, and street cleaner -- have the power to balance your biological budget to ensure a life that's both long and strong. Thankfully, just as cities can invest in renewal and improving their repair processes, so can you.
YOU: Staying Young is filled with signature YOU Tools, including YOU Tests, YOU Tips, and visual and verbal metaphors to bring the science to life.

A Letter from Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz
Dear Amazon Shoppers:
Our books, YOU: The Owner’s Manual and YOU: On a Diet, have become #1 Amazon and New York Times bestsellers, and we thank you. Many people have asked us questions about aging. We want you to know that the science in the last very few years has challenged the very perceptions of aging.
Most of us tend to have the same view of the way people age: As we grow older, we start losing things. We lose some hair, lose our minds, lose our balance, lose our eyesight, lose a little of this and a lot of that until we eventually wither away into a hunched-over senior who takes 3-inch steps and eats dinner at 4:00 pm. But to think that a life of frailty is an inevitable outcome of aging is a mistake. And the fact that we don't take control of it is because we have excuses. We live in a society where making excuses is as easy as making a sandwich. Nowhere is that more apparent than when it comes to your own health. The reason why we are frazzled with stress? Blame the boss. The reason why we are sick? Blame the sniffling kids. The reason why our society’s waistbands are stretching and snapping at alarming rates? Blame Auntie's alfredo sauce. The top health excuse, however, revolves around the biggest four-letter word of them all, the GENE. We blame our genes for just about everything--for baldness, for fatness, for illness and for every other health-related problem we can think of. In our minds, that means that our mom, pop, and the rest of the family tree are all on the hook for the ultimate health question of them all--how long and how well we will live?
But that is exactly where more of us have it wrong. While we are certainly born with genes that help determine everything from our height to our risk of heart disease, we are making a monumental mistake by assuming that we can’t control our genes--especially when it comes to aging.
Perhaps the best way to explain the dynamics of aging is to take a look at another complex system that is subjected to the same forces as your body: a city. Some cities remain beautiful and elegant in their old age, while younger ones may look worn down and beat-up. Now, every city has its own genetic code, just as you do. For a city, genes are geography; whether it's built on a river or whether it's located in a hot or cold climate, or whether it lies directly in a prevalent hurricane path. A city's geography can't change. But the city can adapt to the environment with earthquake-proof construction, with underground tunnels for walking in wintertime, or with strong levies. The adaptation the city makes to survive and to thrive is what is crucial to its vitality.
The same goes for you.
Just because you have been dealt a genetic hand that predisposes you to heart disease or diabetes or the wearing of pants as large as a parachute doesn't mean you can't mitigate the effects of those genes. One of the major things we will teach you is that while you can't change your genes, you can change whether they are turned on or off or how you express them. Just like a city, you can compensate elegantly if you understand your options.
For the first time in history, the medical world has uncovered many of the miraculous biologic processes that control how and why we age. Truth is, much of aging is actually in our control; with the power to nudge our biologic systems so that our unwanted genes can work in our favor--as long as you know what to do and how you are doing it. In YOU: Staying Young, we translate the latest science (much of which wasn't available even three years ago) to help slow your rate of aging. You will learn 14 Major Agers, and dozens of action steps so that you can take control of those agers and your aging processes.
We hope you enjoy the cartoons, analogies, and jokes. But ultimately we hope you soak in the message: Your health is largely in your control. We dedicate the book to all who desire longer life so they can serve more.
Thanks very much,
Mike and Mehmet

Your Vital Supplements: The doctors' recommendations of pills and supplements that will make your body and mind stronger, healthier, and younger. It's best to get them from your diet, so consider these an insurance policy for an imperfect diet.
Move Your Body: Most of your body parts become stronger when you use them. Take a glimpse at what you can and should do to make sure you're doing enough to prime your pumps.

Questions for the Doctors
Q: What is the single most important thing someone can do to combat aging?
A: To understand that you get to control your rate of aging if you want to. It isn't that hard and doesn't take that long. In fact, even if you have had burgers for breakfast or fried your brain cells with stress by noon, you're not necessarily destined to wear husky pants, forget birthdays, and spiral into a state of complete upheaval. That's right: You get a do-over in life if you want it. Repeat after us: not hard, not long.
Q: Is there one food, vitamin, mineral, exercise, or lifestyle change that does more to combat aging than any other?
A: Our top choices in terms of ease and impact:
Walk 30 minutes a day and call someone after you do it. No excuses, walk every day. If you do it, you'll have the courage, health, and attitude to adopt other changes too.
Take 2 grams of omega-3 fats every day in form of either walnuts, fish oil, or DHA supplements.
Q: What is one of the most surprising contributors to aging that we can easily remove from our lifestyles?
A: Inflammation of our teeth. Remove it with daily flossing and brushing and seeing a dental professional regularly. You won't just save your teeth; you'll also go a long way in saving your heart and arteries. Another? Our lack of turmeric--curry and mustard (mustard on stadium hot dogs does not qualify). Both of those ingredients make your memory better.
Q: What are some of the immediate benefits you will notice from following the tips in the book?
A: You will feel younger. You might get hit upon by strangers or be mistaken for someone 20 years younger. In addition to the waist size you'll lose, your new attitude and vitality for life may give your reading choice away.
Q: How early should most people start to focus on slowing the aging process?
A: The aging process starts in your teens or even before, but any time you start is better than later. (Repeat: not hard, not long.) Your cells basically have a memory of three years. So by changing your habits now, within three years, it's as if you have done your healthy habit all your life.

Weston State Hospital (formerlly Known as lunatic asylum)

Weston State Hospital (formerlly Known as lunatic asylum)

" The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum — subsequently the Weston State Hospital — was a psychiatric hospital operated from 1864 to 1994 by the government of the U.S. state of West Virginia, in the city of Weston. The hospital was bought by Joe Jordan in 2007, and partly opened to tours and other money raising events for its restoration. The hospital's main building is one of the largest hand-cut stone masonry buildings in the United States, and, as Weston Hospital Main Building, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990.

The hospital was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly in the early 1850s as the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. Following consultations with Thomas Story Kirkbride, then-superintendent of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane, a building in the Kirkbride Plan was designed in the Gothic Revival and Tudor Revival styles by Richard Snowden Andrews (1830-1903), an architect from Baltimore whose other commissions included the Maryland Governor's residence in Annapolis and the south wing of the U.S. Treasury building in Washington.Construction on the site, along the West Fork River opposite downtown Weston, began in late 1858. Work was initially conducted by prison laborers; a local newspaper in November of that year noted "seven convict negroes" as the first arrivals for work on the project. Skilled stonemasons were later brought in from Germany and Ireland.

Construction was interrupted by the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861. Following its secession from the United States, the government of Virginia demanded the return of the hospital's unused construction funds for its defense; before this could occur, the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry seized the money from a local bank, delivering it to Wheeling, where it was put toward the establishment of the Reorganized Government of Virginia, which sided with the northern states during the war. The Reorganized Government appropriated money to resume construction in 1862; following the admission of West Virginia as a U.S. state in 1863, the hospital was renamed the West Virginia Hospital for the Insane. The first patients were admitted in October 1864, but construction continued into 1881. The 200-foot (61 m) central clock tower was completed in 1871, and separate rooms for black people were completed in 1873. The hospital was intended to be self-sufficient, and a farm, dairy, waterworks, and cemetery were located on its grounds, which ultimately reached 666 acres (266 ha) in area. A gas well was drilled on the grounds in 1902. Its name was again changed to Weston State Hospital in 1913.

Originally designed to house 250 patients in solitude, the hospital held 717 patients by 1880; 1,661 in 1938; over 1,800 in 1949; and, at its peak, 2,400 in the 1950s in overcrowded conditions. A 1938 report by a survey committee organized by a group of North American medical organizations found that the hospital housed "epileptics, alcoholics, drug addicts and non-educable mental defectives" among its population. A series of reports by The Charleston Gazette in 1949 found poor sanitation and insufficient furniture, lighting, and heating in much of the complex, while one wing, which had been rebuilt using Works Progress Administration funds following a 1935 fire started by a patient, was comparatively luxurious.

By the 1980s, the hospital had a reduced population due to changes in the treatment of mental illness. In 1986, then-Governor Arch Moore announced plans to build a new psychiatric facility elsewhere in the state and convert the Weston hospital to a prison. Ultimately the new facility, the William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital, was built in Weston and the old Weston State Hospital was simply closed, in May 1994. The building and its grounds have since been mostly vacant, aside from local events such as tours of the first floor for $10.00 and all four floors for $30.00, fairs and church revivals. In 1999, all four floors of the interior of the building were damaged by paintball players; participants in the vandalism were found to include at least twenty local police officers and employees of area law enforcement agencies.

Efforts toward adaptive reuse of the building have included proposals to convert the building into a Civil War Museum and a hotel and golf course complex. A non-profit 501(c)3 organization, the Weston Hospital Revitalization Committee, was formed in 2000 for the purpose of aiding in preservation of the building and finding appropriate tenants. Three small museums devoted to military history, toys, and mental health, respectively, were opened in the first floor of the building in 2004, but were soon forced to close due to fire code violations.

The hospital was auctioned by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources on August 29, 2007. Joe Jordan, an asbestos demolition contractor from Morgantown, was the high bidder and paid $1.5 million for the 242,000-square-foot (22,500 m2) buil

Inland Cigar Factory - 1895

Inland Cigar Factory - 1895

297 1st Avenue, Kamloops, BC.

Description of Historic Place
The Inland Cigar Factory is a two-storey, red-brick Victoria-era commercial structure with a
corbelled cornice, arched second-floor window openings and a recessed central entry. It is
situated on an angled lot at the southwest corner of FIRST Avenue and Seymour Street in
downtown Kamloops.
Heritage Value
The Inland Cigar Factory is significant for its ties to the agricultural history of Kamloops and is
symbolic as the centre of a one-time thriving cigar manufacturing industry. George A. Borthwick
(1866-1927), who hailed from Victoria, established the Inland Cigar Factory in 1894. The
following year, the company was restructured and refinanced by Marshall Pollock Gordon
(1862-1929), who owned a local furniture store and served as Kamloops mayor for three terms.
That same year, 1895, this building was erected as the headquarters and factory for the company.
Tobacco for the cigars was imported from Cuba and then blended with locally grown tobacco.
To demonstrate the technique of rolling authentic Cuban cigars, the company brought in a
number of consultants from Cuba. At its height, the company employed a staff of twenty-five
who produced up to 4,000 cigars per day. The Inland Cigar Factory continued to operate in this
space until 1913 when they moved next door; this space was then taken over by the Model
Bakery.
The Inland Cigar Factory is valued for its connection with Kamloops’s first commercial district.
Its location on First Avenue was once the center of Kamloops’s thriving downtown commercial
district, which was situated on Victoria Street West. Over time the commercial district has
shifted further east down Victoria Street. Additionally, the Inland Cigar Factory is valued
architecturally as an example of a vernacular industrial structure from the Victorian era. The
walls are constructed of an early locally-made red brick.
Character-Defining Elements
Key characteristics that define the heritage character of the Inland Cigar Factory include its:
- prominent corner location on an angled lot at the corner of First Avenue and Victoria Street
West
- commercial form, scale and massing as expressed by its two-storey height, symmetrical front
facade, rectangular plan and flat roof, with no front or side setbacks
- wood-frame and masonry construction, with common red-brick cladding with flush-struck
mortar joints, segmental arched second-floor window openings, blind arched opening above
central entry, with rubbed brick outline and herringbone infill, and corbelled cornice
- early prefabricated galvanized drainage scuppers at rear

A. McKim House

A. McKim House

The historic place at 855 Bernard Ave. is valued for its association with a series of occupants who were major contributors to the growth and development of the community, and for the architecture as a representative example from the pre-WW 2 period in Kelowna. It also has value for being one of many notable heritage buildings along Bernard Avenue east of the downtown core area.

The house was built by J. Emslie Ltd. in 1936 for Albert L.T. and Thelma McKim. Albert McKim was an electrician who became superintendent for West Kootenay Power and Light Co. Ltd. He built the living-room fireplace himself, collecting the smooth stones from local streambeds.

Typical of many residences built between the world wars, the house is 1.5 storeys high with stucco-clad exterior walls. It is simply treated, with windows punched into the walls.

In 1949 the house was sold to Dr. Hynes, a radiologist at Kelowna General Hospital; and in 1954 was again sold, to Owen. L. and Marjory Jones, who lived here in their later years during the 1950s and early 1960s.

The house has particular value for its association with Owen L. Jones (1888-1964). Born in Wales, and doing service during WWI in the Welsh Fusiliers, he and his wife Margaret came to the area in 1920. After a year on an orchard in Oyama, they moved to Kelowna, where Owen Jones and partner Paul Tempest established a furniture store on Bernard Avenue. Successful as a merchant, Jones became active politically. He served as alderman at various times between 1929 and 1948, and as mayor from 1936 to 1939. When the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF, now the New Democratic Party) was formed in 1933, he ran unsuccessfully for that party in the 1933 provincial election. Shifting to federal politics, he held the Yale riding for the CCF from 1948 until 1958, at which time he was living here. Jones was also on the boards of the Okanagan Regional Library, the Kelowna Hospital, the Board of Trade, and was the first president of the Kelowna and District Credit Union from 1938 to 1940.

This lamp and the marble table it sits on were some of the first pieces my parents purchased when they got married in 1956. I had the base of the lamp refinished in nickle, painted the lamp and had a lampshade designed and made that was similar to the original. A prized possession.

Vaughan framing hammers, wooden handles

Vaughan framing hammers, wooden handles

Vaughan wooden handled hammers in my collection as of Nov 2008. the Vaughan company is the producer of upward of 20% of my collection if you include the hammers made by Vaughan for other companies to sell under their own label, Craftsman, Raptor, and Vaughans acquired line Dalluge. I have come to think of them as the 800 pound gorilla of hammer makers. Still Made in USA, you go, Vaughan!

Vaughan Grocery

Vaughan Grocery

The picture was taken many many tens of years ago of "Vaughan Incorporated", a grocery company which passed on eventually to the Richardson family in Louisville, KY area. They would deliver groceries all of Kentucky such as E-town, Owensboro, etc. Vaughan Grocery then got sold to another owner because they saw Kroger, Winn-Dixie were coming and opening in this same area.

Hunting room in Sagadi manor

Sagadi Manor complex is located in Lahemaa National Park. The history of manor dates back for 500 years. For the time being Sagadi has become the centre of tourism and natural and cultural education. The complex is extraordinary for its unity: lots of outbuildings with repaired roads, parkways, park and ponds. The complex was restored by forestry system and even at this point it is being managed by foresters, more precisely by RMK. In Sagadi forest centre You can visit forest and manor museum, nature school, hotel and restaurant.

there are really no department stores on the island!

The Source: A Guidebook Of American Genealogy (Third Edition)

Genealogists and other historical researchers have valued the first two editions of this work, often referred to as "the genealogist's bible." The new edition continues that tradition. Intended as a handbook and a guide to selecting, locating, and using appropriate primary and secondary resources, The Source also functions as an instructional tool for novice genealogists and a refresher course for experienced researchers. More than 30 experts in this field--genealogists, historians, librarians, and archivists--prepared the 20 signed chapters, which are well written, easy to read, and include many helpful hints for getting the most out of whatever information is acquired. Each chapter ends with an extensive bibliography and is further enriched by tables, black-and-white illustrations, and examples of documents. Eight appendixes include the expected contact information for groups and institutions that persons studying genealogy and history need to find.
