These shots were requested by my employer who was in the process of pitching an idea for a steakhouse at a new arena in Pittsburgh, to be modelled after an upscale restaurant at the arena where I work. The set up was a draped cart in the kitchen. As the food was prepared for service, it was placed on the cart where I was set up, I'd grab a few shots and the meal would then be taken to the customer in the restaurant, all in the span of about 45 seconds to a minute. Not exactly ideal conditions for shooting anything, let alone food. While there are some things I would do differently if asked again, given the restraints I was shooting under, I was pleased with the results.

Test Track Ride Car

Test Track Ride Car

Upon reaching the end of this second queue guests are loaded into the test cars to begin. Upon dispatching from the loading dock, the car is brought through an accelerated hill climb. Next, the car's suspension is tested over different road surfaces, including bricks and cobblestones. Next, the car's anti-lock braking system is turned off and the car tries to navigate a course of cones, knocking many over in the process. The anti-lock brakes are then turned back on and a similar cone course is navigated easily. Guests are shown a video overlay of the difference. Next, the cars are brought through environmental chambers: a hot chamber of 110°F (43°C), a cold chamber of 10°F (-13°C), and a corrosion chamber. The nozzles on the corrosion robots are actually Hidden Mickeys.

The handling of the car is tested next. It climbs a set of hills with blind turns while increasing its speed each time. At the top the car almost crashes into an oncoming semi-truck before swerving out of the way. The car is now on the final test shown in the briefing room: the barrier test. The car lines up across from a barrier and begins to accelerate towards it. Just before hitting the barrier a series of flashes occur, where a picture of the guests is taken, and the barrier opens to a track outside. The car takes a lap around the building with banked turns and a max speed of 65 mph (104.6 km/h). As the car returns to the loading dock a thermal scan is taken of the guests and shown on a large screen.

“There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.”

“There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favorite book.”

I miss my childhood. These books were so dear to me.

My mind was so different back then. I would rather get the newest Polly Pocket then get the newest shoes. I didn't care about how I looked or what I wore. I was innocent. I wanted more than anything to just play and have fun. My whole world revolved around toys, games, and fun. I didn't think about living, I just lived.

Isn't it odd to think that children know so little, yet so much? Children have confidence; something many teens and adults lack. How often do you hear a child say, "I can paint - but I'm not very good." No, they say "I know how to paint skyscrapers, cars, cities, dresses, lady bugs, and stars." Why is it that kids have more confidence than us? We are losing our pride. When was the last time you were truly proud of something you did?

Children are so beautiful. They are innocent from this blind world. They see this world from a whole different perspective. They don't try - they do. Surely we can bring back just a glimpse of our childhood and remember how great it was to be so unaware of the world and only aware of joy, happiness, and fun.

Selly Oak Birmingham 1975

Selly Oak Birmingham 1975

A Peak Class diesel is working hard on a Northeast to Southwest expess (1V71 to Penzance) as it crosses the viaduct over the canal & Bristol Road. Queen Elizabeth Hospital forms the backdrop.

The telephoto lens emphasises the gradient up to Selly Oak station on the West Suburban Branch from Birmingham New Street to Kings Norton. This line was originally single track but quickly established itself as a main line rather than a branch after doubling.

By 1975 the Midland Railway station was unmanned & uncared for. The glass in the platform awning had gone & the buildings were derelict. Not long afterwards in 1978 the whole historic lot was swept away & a modern brick & plastic replacement built. No doubt an improvement on the dereliction but not on the 1876 original which if renovated instead of demolished would have been very much better.

Selly Oak station became part of the Cross City Line from Lichfield to Redditch & was electrified in 1993. The structure on the left is the roof over the staircase which lead to the subway over to the Down platform. This has been replaced by a footbridge.

Selly Oak Station Birmingham Summer 1974

Built by the Midland Railway in 1876 Selly Oak station in the southern surburbs was unmanned & uncared for in 1974. Still served by dmus from New Street to Redditch the NE-SW expresses hauled by Peaks swept through the station at speed.

This view is looking back southwards from the drive down to Bristol Road. The glass in the platform awning had gone, the roof slates were missing & the buildings derelict. From a 2007 perspective there is surprisingly little graffitti - perhaps kids couldn't afford spray cans in those days!

  • (Roman shade) A flat fabric shade that folds into neat horizontal pleats when raised.

  • (Roman Shade) A single sheet shade that rises up by lift cord in a tear drop or flat style that looks like an accordion folding up back and forth on itself. Reminds me of an opera house window treatment swag. Part of our Melhanna Shade collection.

  • (Roman Shade) This window treatment style consists of a fabric shade with wooden slats inserted horizontally at intervals down its entire length. It is raised and lowered via pull cord as with other blinds, but gathers soft folds as it does so.

  • (Patio Doors) Sliding glass doors, often used for access to a deck or terrace.

  • A mainly glass door that opens onto a patio, deck or backyard of a house. The door panel is comprised of stiles, rails and glass to allow for viewing. Originally homeowners asked for glass doors from a glazer, or someone who handles glass.

  • (Patio Doors) Practically maintenance free never needs painting. Perfect for engineering tight seals that prevent leaky drafts, helping keeping heating and cooling costs low. Constructed with the quality craftsmanship you expect from Atrium these doors are a wise decision for any homeowner.

day 35.

This feels awkward to me.
A friend and I went to the coast to do her senior portraits (which I'll be posting soon, I'm still in the process of editing!) and it turned out to be one heck of a day. It was extremely windy on the actual beach, so getting good shots was er, difficult. I had so much sand it my eyes (that does not feel very nice) that I could barely see through the viewfinder, let alone compose and take a picture of someone who could barely see me because she too had sand in her eyes :P Oh and did I mention it was really windy?
So yeah. Awkward. I remember finding it hard to breathe when facing the wind.
Oh my gosh! And my silly long hair! After that trip I just want to cut it all off. So. Many. Tangles. I left a deep conditioning treatment in my hair for about 20 minutes, then had to comb it for another 20 minutes.

And then I had gas pumped out of my car because the guy at the station messed up and put too much in. But it was all good :) I think I got 10 extra dollars worth of gas out of the whole ordeal. . .

All of this to say, please forgive me for my weird expression. It was an odd day.

Oh yeah, and I must have looked like a complete idiot running after my tripod case and yelling "come back here you rascal!!" The people walking past at the time seemed to find it amusing.

***note: this church, located in the town square, lit up every night in the purple-ish hue you see here. I could not find any lights casting a purple glow, so I have no idea where this effect came from.

Day 3

The plan for this day is a bit more laid-back. We’re grabbing a complimentary breakfast on the roof of the Marriott Grand Flora, renting a car from Avis, and driving down to Amalfi where we plan to stay for the next 3-4 days. Breakfast was a huge buffet with just about anything you could want, and it was eaten on the rooftop patio which overlooked much of Rome. To the left you can see the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica standing out clearly against the sky, while the majority of the view is of the Borghese gardens, which includes the Galleria Borghese and the Villa Medici among other things. After breakfast we went to get our rental from Avis. The reservation was set up with the Avis office at the Leonardo da Vinci airport, which would require a metro ride to the Stazione Termini, followed by a 45 minute train ride to the airport, followed by negotiating through the airport crowds to the counter, getting the car, and driving back to the hotel to finish checking out. As I walked out the front of the hotel I noticed an Avis sign and asked the bellman about it. Lo and behold there was an Avis office two blocks from the hotel! I walked down there and there were incredibly helpful, switching my reservation and hooking us up with the weekly special which included full insurance coverage (something I normally don’t bother with but will come in to play later in our trip) a newer model and unlimited mileage for less than the original reservation. As a spur of the moment decision I also added a Tom-Tom, which was the smartest thing I did the entire trip. It was worth every penny of the cost as it likely saved our marriage. Without it we’d have been lost many times and probably would’ve ended up in multiple arguments. Anyway, the vehicle they gave us was a blue 4 door Opel with a manual transmission and a 1 liter, 4 cylinder engine. That’s right, 1 liter. We left the hotel and began following the Tom-Tom’s directions to Amalfi, when I noticed something. Street signs and traffic lights were in very different locations, so much so that I ran the first traffic light I came to and nearly clipped an elderly woman about to cross the road. Needless to say she let me know I was an idiot in a very colorful way. We made our way south down to Salerno and began the drive up the coast. This was fun and nerve wracking at the same time as the road was very narrow, very windy, cut into the side of the mountains, and had many blind corners. Oh, and they were filled with scooters weaving in and out between the cars and giant tourist buses bullying their way around the hairpin turns. As we finally pulled into Amalfi Jen pulled out the reservation information. It said there was no parking at the hotel and that we should call them to find out where to park and so that they could send down the luggage service which would transport our bags to the hotel. Yeah, we didn’t have a cell phone that worked in Italy and pay phones didn’t seem to be readily available either, so we asked a traffic cop what to do. He helped us out and soon enough we parked the car in a parking garage, left our bags for the luggage service, and headed to the hotel (Residenza del Duca) which was located on the 7th floor of a historical building just off the main piazza of the village. There wasn’t an elevator, and I wouldn’t suggest this hotel to those that aren’t in some modest bit of shape. There were two days in Amalfi where we went up and down those steps enough to justify a second dessert after dinner. By the time we got settled, showered and changed into clean clothes it was time for dinner. Amalfi is a small town, and the main piazza is where everyone congregates in the evening. There are many cafes, pottery stores, and gelato shops, and the local liquor Limoncello is served and sold everywhere. It is manufactured up and down the Amalfi coast and comes in two forms, both made primarily from the local lemon crop: a clear lemon liquor, and a cream lemon liquor, both of which are quite good. Each town on the Amalfi coast claims to be the original Limoncello makers, and even the Isle of Capri lays a claim to it also. I’m not quite sure where it actually originates. As we ate at a sidewalk cafe and enjoyed people watching, a group of musicians came around and played several of their songs. I’m a bit of a sucker for this kind of thing, so I bought one of their CD’s. They call themselves Gypsy Orient and have 4 member: a singer (with a tambourine of course), a guy with an accordion, a guy with an acoustic guitar that had duct tape holding it together, and a bassist who played a standup bass with only 3 strings. Did I mention how much of a sucker I am? Anyway, we spent the rest of the evening relaxing and enjoying the people w

The Humble Hero

The Humble Hero

It's Sunday night, a little after 10:00pm. Michele and I are watching "The Apprentice" in the bedroom - Zoey is curled up next to Michele and Merline and Geronimo are sleeping at our feet. Typical Sunday night wind down routine.

Suddenly, without warning, Geronimo jumps up and starts barking in a tone I've never heard him bark before. He leaps off the bed and bolts down the hall towards the kitchen and living room. Maybe he heard a weird noise on TV and is just freaking out over nothing. No, it can't be - he is REALLY fired up. One learns the tone of their dog after a while, and he was very upset about something.

I followed him to see what was going on - he ran to the back door, barking his head off the whole time. Very odd we thought. Our minds racing trying to figure out what's bothering him so much - did someone come in to our apartment? Surely not. The lights were on - we were both home - it was Sunday night at 10:00pm. Who in their right-mind would rob a place with the people home?

Michele notices that her purse and a laptop bag had been placed by the back door. Did we do that? It's hard to remember these things - half my "watching TV" time is spent looking for the remote. Why would we leave those items there? Was anything missing? Nope.

Geronimo is still agitated. Sniffing around. Barking - very jumpy and alert. I go out to have a cigarette - my pack is gone. Nothing unusual, I misplace stuff all the time. I hunted for a bit, gave up, and opened another pack.

Had someone really come in to our apartment while we were home? We hadn't heard anything and what kind of person would try and rob someone silently while they watching TV in another room?

Today Michele mentions it to the maintenance man - asks if they can review the previous night's surveillance tapes. He responds - "Well, another apartment was robbed last night while the guy was sleeping." The guy then shows up and talks with Michele. He talks about the stuff that was stolen and mentions that they had left a pack of cigarettes on his counter. My pack of cigarettes.

So, we really did have an intruder last night. It appears they were silently storing the loot at the back door and hoped to get away undetected. If they were, it would be easy enough to slip out the front door if they heard us get up. Which is exactly what they did. Geronimo sensed something was not right; perhaps he caught their scent. It sent him into a frenzy and he scared them away. Lots of my camera gear was in the living room, my wallet, two laptops, and various other little items that are valuable to me (external hard drive of pictures, etc.)

We never left our patio door locked. We live 4 stories about the street. The only way someone could get to our place is if they scaled a row of hedges and then crossed the patios of 5 other units. We live in a very safe neighborhood. Our building has security cameras everywhere. Sure it was dumb of us - we were naive. San Francisco is such a wonderful city - it's easy to become blind to the fact that bad stuff can happen here just as it happens in any large city.

So, long story short, Geronimo saved the day. He is a hero. He doesn't care though, he was just being himself. That's the best part - he doesn't realize just how special he is in every way. Stinky face and all.

Don't it make my brown eyes blue (or in this case black)

Don't it make my brown eyes blue (or in this case black)

The giant panda's life span in the wild has not been accurately documented, but Chinese scientists report that some pandas in zoos have lived to be 35 years old. Hsing-Hsing, who lives in the National Zoo, turned 29 in 1999. Most animals live longer in captivity than in the wild.

Giant pandas have a rolling gait. Like people and other bears, giant pandas are flat-footed (plantigrade - that is, both heel and toe touch the ground when walking).

Pandas are good tree climbers, using their short claws to grab onto the bark. Sometimes they take afternoon naps high in the trees.

Unlike many other bears, pandas cannot walk on their hind legs.

Giant pandas do not hibernate since their food is available all year long. Also, the bamboo they eat is not high enough in nourishment to fatten them up for the winter. During the cold winter months, giant pandas go to lower altitudes where it is a bit warmer; they also take shelter in hollow trees or dens. They don't seem to have permanent dens.

Pandas have a very slow reproductive rate which contributes to their declining numbers.

Male and female giant pandas mate in the spring, attracting each other with calls and odors.

Females give birth between 95 and 160 days after mating. They have their cubs in dens that they dig in the ground. One or two cubs are born but usually only one survives.

Panda cubs are small, white, blind, furless, and helpless at birth. Except for marsupials (kangaroos, opossums, etc.), giant panda cubs are the smallest newborn mammals. They weigh four to six ounces (85-140 g) as newborns. This is lighter than an apple.

Like newborn human babies, panda cubs cry when they are hungry or need care from their mother. Their coats take on adult coloring about a month after birth. Cubs' eyes open at six to seven weeks. They will follow their mother at about three months after birth. They start eating bamboo at about 6 months old and are weaned from their mother at about 9 months.

Panda cubs grow very slowly. They stay with their mother for one to two years. They are fully grown in 2-4 years.

Blightful surface level parking lot in Tacoma II

Blightful surface level parking lot in Tacoma II

Here is another empty lot in downtown Tacoma which Tacoma's antiquated parking requirements do not allow to be appropriately infilled with a building.

The appropriate building here would have continuous retail on the first floor. Preferably with a angle of the building facing the intersection which Vancouver, BC has. Not a possibility in Tacoma where pedestrians would be forced to be faced with a blank wall or parking garage entrance if someone ever wanted to build a building there.

A "Foghorn Leghorn"-style character is carrying a platter of ladies above his head. This is actually a really fun restaurant & I had a really nice time when I ate there. The people are very friendly & they will tell you all kinds of details about their lives without any prompting.

Also, I see some blue and silver tarpaulins.
