Photo from the Hotel Hermitage, Monte-Carlo Monaco taken from my hotel room during the "Grand Prix De Monaco". This is a page from my scrapbook, on the way to visit my honey as he was working abroad, and went to Spa The Thermes Marins in Monte-Carlo and stayed at Hotel Hermitage. The spa can be reached from the hotel and is on the bottom floor with an incredible indoor sea water pool. The spa is one of the best in the world, they use sea water directly from the Mediterranean and many of the treatment rooms have views to the ocean. The sea water makes an enormous difference. To achieve the maximum results of the spa, I did the treatments all day in the comprehensive facility with lunches at “L’Hirondelle” and stayed in the Hotel for a spa dinner/spa breakfast in the room. There was the bluest of skies. I would like to go back, and obtained this program at a boutique as I happened to stay there over the Grand Prix time the first time I "stopped over". Also photo from Rome, Italy. Photo scanned from original with my smartphone.

Paris Hotels (Special Places to Stay)

Paris Hotels (Special Places to Stay)

Now in its fourth edition, Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay: Paris Hotels contains details of more than 100 of the least pretentious, good value hotels serving the French capital. This guide helps readers avoid paying inflated prices, or having to put up with the bland corporate hospitality culture that has come to be associated with many of the leading international hotel chains. The editor carefully steers readers away from surly staff and the other grim effects of mass tourism. The result is a personal selection of hotels chosen by someone who has lived in France for over 30 years. Also included are helpful hints on travelling and visiting Paris, together with a section on making the most of Paris.

Hotel de Ville, Paris, the town hall of the city, at night, seen from the border of the Seine river. I would like to get a frontal shot of this building now that I have a 16-35 mm lens, I think it could look better than this. Paris is an excellent city for taking pictures, during the day and, specially, at night. I would love to go there more frequently!

Eloise in Paris (Eloise Series)

Bonjour!
Here's the thing of it: Paris has just been discovered by Eloise the little girl from the Plaza...
Here is what Eloise does in Paris: everything.
The effect is rawther extraordinaire. If you come to Paris with Eloise you will always be glad you did.
Eloise in Paris was first published in 1957, the second of the Eloise quartet, and an immediate bestseller. Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight traveled to Paris to research the book, and the illustrations are dotted with the celebrities they knew there: Richard Avedon takes Eloise's passport photograph; Christian Dior prods her tummy, while his young assistant, Yves Saint Laurent, looks on; Lena Horne sits at an outdoor cafe.
All four Eloise books by the late Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight -- Eloise: The Absolutely Essential Edition, Eloise in Paris, Eloise at Christmastime, and Eloise in Moscow -- are now being reissued by Simon & Schuster.

Why is Eloise, 6-year-old resident of the Plaza Hotel in New York City, going to Paris? She and Nanny were summoned by a cablegram from Eloise's mother, and, as we all know, "If you are going to Paris France / you have to turn into French and absolutely go wild / and put adhesive tape on you / and fall down a lot and sklathe the window / and stretch into the curtain and..." Ahh, the deliciously mad logic of Eloise. She promptly gets on the phone to tell everyone--including room service--that she is Paris bound. There's so much to do--shots, passport pictures, packing ("Here's what else you have to take / Everything"), and of course the endless good-byes. Fortunately, "Sabena is the only airline / that will allow you to travel with a turtle" so Skipperdee comes along for the ride. At last, ils arrivent!
Hilary Knight captures familiar Parisian sights in his delicately hewn pen-and-ink illustrations of everything from the Arc de Triomphe to the Seine to the Champs Elysees to outdoor cafes. Children will study every detail of each rawther extraordinaire illustration, from Weenie's snout (such as it is) peeking out from under the hotel bed to the bandy-legged, bunchy-shirted Eloise with her necklace of champagne corks. Even if children don't understand half of the quirks and language directed toward precocious grownups ("Langoustines make very good fingernails"), they'll find more than enough to delight them down to their very toes. Adults, of course, will also revel in this fascinatingly eccentric romp. And if you know anyone who loves (or will love) Paris, this book is the perfect bon voyage gift. Eloise in Paris was first published in 1957, the sequel to the original Eloise, and is every bit as wondrous. If you're in search of more Eloise (and who isn't really?), don't miss The Absolutely Essential Eloise, the original Eloise book with an additional scrapbook that tells the whole story of this impish character and her devoted creators. bel air motor inn - Bel Canto

Bel Canto (P.S.)

Bel Canto (P.S.)

Somewhere in South America, at the home of the country's vice president, a lavish birthday party is being held in honor of the powerful businessman Mr. Hosokawa. Roxane Coss, opera's most revered soprano, has mesmerized the international guests with her singing. It is a perfect evening—until a band of gun-wielding terrorists takes the entire party hostage. But what begins as a panicked, life-threatening scenario slowly evolves into something quite different, a moment of great beauty, as terrorists and hostages forge unexpected bonds, and people from different continents become compatriots. Friendship, compassion, and the chance for great love lead the characters to forget the real danger that has been set in motion . . . and cannot be stopped.

In an unnamed South American country, a world-renowned soprano sings at a birthday party in honor of a visiting Japanese industrial titan. His hosts hope that Mr. Hosokawa can be persuaded to build a factory in their Third World backwater. Alas, in the opening sequence, just as the accompanist kisses the soprano, a ragtag band of 18 terrorists enters the vice-presidential mansion through the air conditioning ducts. Their quarry is the president, who has unfortunately stayed home to watch a favorite soap opera. And thus, from the beginning, things go awry.
Among the hostages are not only Hosokawa and Roxane Coss, the American soprano, but an assortment of Russian, Italian, and French diplomatic types. Reuben Iglesias, the diminutive and gracious vice president, quickly gets sideways of the kidnappers, who have no interest in him whatsoever. Meanwhile, a Swiss Red Cross negotiator named Joachim Messner is roped into service while vacationing. He comes and goes, wrangling over terms and demands, and the days stretch into weeks, the weeks into months.
With the omniscience of magic realism, Ann Patchett flits in and out of the hearts and psyches of hostage and terrorist alike, and in doing so reveals a profound, shared humanity. Her voice is suitably lyrical, melodic, full of warmth and compassion. Hearing opera sung live for the first time, a young priest reflects:
Never had he thought, never once, that such a woman existed, one who stood so close to God that God's own voice poured from her. How far she must have gone inside herself to call up that voice. It was as if the voice came from the center part of the earth and by the sheer effort and diligence of her will she had pulled it up through the dirt and rock and through the floorboards of the house, up into her feet, where it pulled through her, reaching, lifting, warmed by her, and then out of the white lily of her throat and straight to God in heaven.
Joined by no common language except music, the 58 international hostages and their captors forge unexpected bonds. Time stands still, priorities rearrange themselves. Ultimately, of course, something has to give, even in a novel so imbued with the rich imaginative potential of magic realism. But in a fractious world, Bel Canto remains a gentle reminder of the transcendence of beauty and love. --Victoria Jenkins

PhD Dale Emeagwali. Microbiologist

PhD Dale Emeagwali. Microbiologist

"1996 Scientist of the Year"

When Dale Brown Emeagwali was a child, she had dreams of becoming a scientist.

But she did not anticipate the depth of her ambition. She was studious - always at the top of her class. She had the support of her parents who, though not academicians, encouraged her pursuits, even helping her at home with simple experiments.

Today, this renowned microbiologist is celebrating her achievements, the latest - the National Technical Association's "1996 Scientist of the Year" award. The citation was presented to Dr. Emeagwali, Oct. 18, at the annual National Technical Achiever-of-the-year Awards Banquet at the Marriott Airport Hotel in Cleveland. Congressman Louis Stokes, (D-Ohio) presented the award.

Dr. Emeagwali was one of six African Americans honored at the convention. She was honored for her contributions to the field of microbiology, molecular biology and biochemistry.

The award recognizes researches regarded as role models and inspirations to other scientists whose discoveries have benefited mankind.

Dr. Emeagwali gives the most credit for her success as a scientist to her parents, Leon and Doris Brown.

Mr. Brown retired from the AFRO-American in 1988 after serving the paper for 42 years, primarily as superintendent of the production department. Her mother is a retired Baltimore city public school teacher.

Dr. Emeagwali was born in the Poplar Grove-Lafayette Avenue section of the city. She attended Alexander Hamilton Elementary School # 145, and went on to Northwestern High School, graduation in 1972.

She entered Coppin State College and graduate in 1976. In the Fall of that year, Dr. Emeagwali enrolled at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington. She was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology, in 1981.

She credits her success at Georgetown to "good teachers as good training" at Coppin State, we well as a summer internship at Meharry Medical School.

The move to Georgetown and away from her family was a "cultural shock, " she said.

Of coping with the challenges she says: "I was always ahead in my class and I held on to that ambition. I felt I had the ability to easily assimilate, regardless of race of class."

While a research fellow at the University of Minnesota, Mrs. Emeagwali and her husband, Philip, a Nigerian-born scientists, spearheaded, among other things, the annual African American Science Day, organized by staff members at the Science Museum of Minnesota.

The project was designed to provide role models for African-American kids.

While keeping kids interested in science is a problem that - crosses racial lines, she said it is particularly acute in the Black culture.

Dr. Emeagwali, encountered more than a few obstacles growing up, which she said made her even more determined to become a scientist. She grew up at a time when Black people were told, "You can't do math. We were taught inadvertently, and sometimes directly, that we couldn' t do that," she said. "When a Black child said he wanted to be a doctor, he was slapped upside the head and told to stop being simple."

Drawing from her childhood experiences. Dr. Emeagwali has always maintained that the success of children depends on the character of their parents.

"Parents must always stress the importance of education and achievement to their children. When kids know there are low expectations, they won't rise," she says.

She said she also held strongly to the belief that learning should be broadly focused to include math, literature and engineering. "It' s important not awards and honors including listings in Who's Who in the World, the World Who's Who of Women, Who's Who in American Education, International Who's Who in Medicine.

She has been awarded a number of prestigious fellowship-from the Uniformed Services University Health Sciences, National Institutes of Health, Damon Runyon Walter Winchell Cancer Fund, American Cancer Society, and the National Science Foundation.

She also received doctoral fellowship Fund, ad a national scholarship from the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Additionally, other accomplishments include the discovery of the existence of isozymes of kynurenine formamidase in the basterium Streptomyces parvulus which, prior to her findings, were known only to exist in higher organisms.

Dr. Emeagwali also proved that cancer gene expression could be inhibited by antisense methodoloy, which she says can led to better treatment for cancer.

Early this year, Dr. Emeagwali happily returned to her native Baltimore- her family and friends-and joined the biology faculty at Morgan State University.

Dr. Emeagwali enjoys sharing her knowledge and expertise with students, promoting academic excellence, attracting students to science and conducting science workshops for inner city youths.

Her hobbies include karate, painting and publishing poems, one of which appeared in the "Atla

Long Beach: City Of Tomorrows (Story Inside)

LONG BEACH: The City Of Tomorrow…Well, Maybe Not Tomorrow, But Soon. We Promise.

Long Beach is a city unlike any I have ever experienced. It celebrates that which it destroys. It remembers fondly that which it forced out of existence. The original Pike is long gone having been replaced by a movie theater and shops that seldom receive visitors. Many of its storefronts are vacant or look to be that way soon.

There are markers within this New Pike-remembrances of what once occupied this barren space. Photographs of a place that people actually did visit and where people actually did spend their money. These pictures of the Pike surround a fountain outside a vacant building, which for the last couple years has advertised that a comedy club will be coming soon.

The brand new West Ocean luxury condominium project across the street from the courthouse on Ocean Blvd has photographs embedded in its exterior wall of the majestic Virginia Hotel that once resided at this location. Follow the nostalgic pictures down the stairs that once led directly to the surf that once attracted throngs of tourists and locals alike, but now leads to a parking structure on the edge of our City’s vision of progress, the aforementioned new improved Pike.

Our beach we killed a long time ago and at times you can still smell its slow rotting corpse. Occasionally there is talk of reviving her, but that’s all it is and most likely all it will ever be. Volunteers who refuse to give up the ghost regularly come to clean her--removing the trash that lay like scabs on her body while gentle brown waves weakly expire on the shore with a last audible gasp.

Until recently our city logo had waves in its design. Our tourist industry gives money to magazines and televised sporting events to (falsely) advertise a pristine shoreline and the surfers who enjoy it. Our daily paper, without a hint of irony, run large, colorful front-page photographs of surfers full of grace riding beautifully curling waves.

Our City is broke. The Aquarium, the New Pike and Wal-Mart didn’t keep their promises. And the Coming Soon Comedy Club isn’t providing any laughs these days either.

Welcome to the City of Long Beach where tragedy plus time equals business as usual.

Magic Kingdom Parking lot and Tram lanes to the TTC

Magic Kingdom Parking lot and Tram lanes to the TTC

Walt Disney World most iconic and oldest theme park, The Magic Kingdom sits a good distance away from its parking lot.

After driving a few miles across Disney Property along one of the large highways that originate from off ramps at the interstate or US 192 you come to a Toll Plaza like configuration, which is where you pay for your ticket to park at the Magic Kingdom parking lot, or show your annual pass, or show your parking pass from your Disney hotel if you are stying at one of thier resorts.

You then follow the lanes to the parking lot where the attendents direct you to your space. The parking lots at all of the Walt Disney World Theme parks are set up so that none of the spots are more than about 200 yards (and most spots far less) from special lanes set up to take guests from that massive lot to either a spot near the park gates, or, in the case of the Magic Kingdom, the Ticket and Transportation Center, at the Ticket and Tansportation center, once you stop at the Ticket booths (or pass by them if you already have your admission media) you will enter a large plaza, in front of you are ramps leading up to the monorail station, and off to your left is a lake and a ferrryboat landing, across the lake you can get a glimpse of the spires of Space Mountain AND Cinderellas castle, at this point you can board a ferry to cross the lagoon that way, or get on the "Express Loop" of the monorail which encircles that same lake that is know as the Seven Seas Lagoon, if you take the monorial you WILL have that experiance that SO MANY of us knew from watching the Wonderful World of Disney all those years as a kid, the experiance of passing through the lobby of that massive concrete A-Frame hotel know as the Contemporary Resort Hotel, before finally stopping at the Magic Kingdom station to disembark from the monorail.

The photo above shows the tram lanes as they pass beneath a viaduct under a road. The Road above that tramway takes guests headed to the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, or Polynesian Village resort . In the distance a monorail appears to be entering the station on the express loop, and this photo was taken FROM a monorail that was heading TO the Ticket and Transpotation Center FROM Epcot.

Corinthia Atlantic Hotel

Corinthia Atlantic Hotel

This is the Corinthia Atlantic hotel were we stayed - great location in Banjul far from the tourist compounds up the coast. The rooms were nice enough - clean, comfy, pretty but not luxurious. The hotel halls were decorated with lots of local art which was nice. They had tennis courts, swimming pool, large beach (although few people used it or seemed to leave the hotel), fitness and aerobics studio, spa - essentially all mod cons. Right outside our room was a mini bird forest so we were woken up early every morning with their singing. But we tried to spend as little time at the resort as possible, it's just not our thing. Great service and staff

Address: Muammar al Gadhafi Avenue in Banjul (near the presidential palace)
Cost: with plane fare around ?400 pp for a week

Morning on Catalina

Morning on Catalina

A view of Avalon harbor at Santa Catalina Island, California, named by Spanish explorer, Sebastian Vizcaino, to honor the feast day of St. Catherine of Alexandria.

Located 25 miles off the coast of Southern California, the island is 22 miles long and 8 miles across at its greatest width. The highest peak is over 2000 feet at Mount Orizaba. Built in 1946, Catalina's "Airport in the Sky" (AVX) is on a mountain top, 1600 feet above sea level. Air service to the island was only by seaplane prior to the airport being built.

George Shatto, a real estate speculator from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was the first private owner of the island. He bought the island for $200,000 in 1887 and tried to develop Avalon into a resort destination. Shatto created the settlement that would become Avalon, and can be credited with building the town's first hotel, the original Hotel Metropole, and pier. His sister-in-law Etta Whitney came up with the name Avalon, which was pulled as a reference from Lord Alfred Tennyson's poem "Idylls of the King," which was about the legend of King Arthur. Despite Shatto's efforts, in a few years he had to default on his loan.

In the late 1890's the island was owned by the Santa Catalina Island Company in another effort to develop it as a resort. In 1919, chewing gum magnate William Wrigley, Jr, bought controlling interest in the Santa Catalina Island Company. Wrigley's Chicago Cubs used the island for spring training for many years.

During World War II the island was closed to tourism and used for military purposes.

In 1975, Philip Wrigley deeded the Wrigley shares in the Santa Catalina Island Company to the Catalina Island Conservancy that he had helped create. The Conservancy now stewards 88 percent of the island. The mission of the Catalina Island Conservancy is to be a responsible steward of its lands through a balance of conservation, education and recreation.

Catalina Island is home to approximately 4000 residents.

Hotel St-Catherine menu 1922

Hotel St-Catherine menu 1922

In the early part of the 20th century, the Hotel St. Catherine was an exclusive resort hotel on Santa Catalina Island that was a favorite of Hollywood stars and movie moguls. Built in 1917-1918 to replace the Hotel Metropole, which burned during the terrible fire of November 1915 that destroyed almost a third of the town, the St. Catherine was an elegant getaway for nearly 30 years. During World War II, the hotel was requisitioned by the military for troop housing. Locals note that the grand lady never quite recovered her glamour after that, and the hotel was closed in 1966.

This is a luncheon menu from Tuesday, October 10, 1922, offering abalone chowder, baked marlin a la creole, curried chicken giblets, veal with raisin dressing, a cold service of roast beef, ox tongue, sardines, and cervelat (German preserved sausage), and for dessert, pear water ice with cake, and something called "cupid chips."

It appears that the menu could be mailed as a postcard by folding it along indicated lines and sealing it with a brightly-colored "Catalina Island" sticker. The address flap has been removed, along with the half of the sticker that adhered to it - the remaining half obscures part of the text on the back, which lists "Things to Do at Catalina," including glass bottom boat trips, fishing, scenic tours, hiking, dancing, horseback riding, and "bathing" (i.e., swimming.)

The menu measures 5.5"x9" (3"x5.5" folded.) There is evidence on the left side that it has been feasted on by enterprising mice, who perhaps thought they were going to get to taste some of the delightful items listed. The back has lost some of its text, but the front side with its wonderful graphic elements and quintessentially Art Deco design in vivid blue and yellow is clean and unmarred except for the mouse-nibbles.
