Bad Faith: A Forgotten History of Family, Fatherland and Vichy France (Vintage)

Bad Faith: A Forgotten History of Family, Fatherland and Vichy France (Vintage)

Bad Faith tells the story of one of history’s most despicable villains and con men—Louis Darquier de Pellepoix, Nazi collaborator and “Commissioner for Jewish Affairs” in France’s Vichy government.

Darquier set about to eliminate Jews in France with brutal efficiency, delivering 75,000 men, women, and children to the Nazis and confiscating Jewish property, which he used for his own gain. Carmen Callil’s riveting and sometimes darkly comic narrative reveals Darquier as a self-obsessed fantasist who found his metier in propagating hatred—a career he denied to his dying day—and traces the heartrending consequences for his daughter Anne of her poisoned family legacy. A brilliant meld of epic sweep and psychological insight, Bad Faith is a startling history of our times.

Bad Faith: A Sister Agatha Mystery (St. Martin's Minotaur Mysteries)

Once she was Professor Mary Naughton, investigative reporter, teacher, and free spirit. Now she is Sister Agatha of Our Lady of Hope, a cloistered, financially-struggling monastery in New Mexico. As an extern-a nun who handles her order's dealings with the outside world-she is used to having her faith and newly-acquired patience tested. But when popular chaplain Father Anselm is poisoned to death in the middle of Mass, Sister Agatha has to bring all her worldly skepticism and savvy instincts to uncover the truth before scandal and unjust suspicion destroy Our Lady of Hope's future. She's up against a hostile local sheriff, an ex-lover who's never forgiven her for 'abandoning' their life together. She's got no shortage of suspects-with-secrets outside-and inside-the monastery. And she'll have to race the clock to stop one remorseless murderer before there's more hell to pay...

    debt consolidation
  • A strategy sometimes used by consumers to better manage their debt problems. Rather than paying off several separate bills each month, a consumer consolidates his or her debts with a financial institution that will arrange for one lower monthly payment extending over a period of time.

  • Debt consolidation entails taking out one loan to pay off many others. This is often done to secure a lower interest rate, secure a fixed interest rate or for the convenience of servicing only one loan.

  • If your debt is spread across multiple creditors, a way to better manage those bills is to group them together into one payment through consolidation.

15 Captain TW Webb WHOLE

15 Captain TW Webb WHOLE

Completed: January, 1999
Hidden: Find the bear silhouette and two bear paws.

* Capt. Theodore Webb was one of the first Caladium growers in the 1930s
* He owned the first and only service station between Sebring and West Palm Beach
* He sponsored the Golden Gloves Boxing Club, known as the Thursday Night Fights

So, where did all these interesting and beautiful plants called "caladiums" come from? Who discovered they grew so well here?

They came from the tropical Amazon River Valley of South America. One of the first caladium growers, Theodore Webb, discovered caladium bulbs while visiting Tampa. He brought some home, threw them in the ground and about 60 years later, caladiums are a multi-million dollar industry and the bulbs are sold around the world. It could be said that as tulips go with Holland, caladiums go with Lake Placid.

But Webb did more than cultivate his 10-acres of commercial caladiums in the 1930s. He opened the town's first service station in 1924, the only one between Sebring and West Palm Beach. His Studebaker was one of the first cars in town. He sponsored Golden Gloves boxing and built a boxing ring adjacent to the service station to give folks something fun to do or watch. It was called "The Thursday Night Fights."

As popular as he was around town for his boxing ring and his quality tires, Webb's heart was in horticulture. The town hired him to replant and recondition the public golf course where Tomoka Heights is today. He served on the town council the year the town changed its name from Lake Stearns to Lake Placid, thanks to Dr. Melvil Dewey. ( But that's another mural.)

Webb worked with new procedures transplanting and propagating native trees, shrubs and ornamental plants. He built a rock garden where DeVane Park gazebo now stands. He had the first certified Red Cross station in our area and instructed Red Cross First Aid and Water Safety Lifesaving to residents of Highlands County and the Brighton Indian Reservation.

And, he was the town's first Boy Scout Scoutmaster.

16 Tea at Southwinds WHOLE

Completed: May 15, 1993

Candy: *starts laughing* "Okay, I'm done. I just wanted to watch Yuri prig out on me." *walks back into the dressing room, closely followed by a giggling Emma*

Yuri: *huffs* "Honestly! I nearly needed medical attention over that little jest!"

Kumi: "Okay, Lark, now what is this about Fletch's daddy?"

Lark: "Apparently, when he found out about the engagement between Fletch and Wren, he arranged a private meeting with Wren. He made it sound like he just wanted to welcome her to the family."

Yuri: *eyes narrow* "Why do I get the distinct feeling this anecdote is going to make me extraordinarily murderous?"

Kumi: "'Cuz it made Lark lose it, which she rarely does."

Lark: *leans forward in chair* "He bushwhacked Wren! Blindsided her! She went in thinking all was right with the world and came out with it falling down around her ears! And she's been suffering for it ever since! I want him maimed! Mutilated! Marred!"

Kumi: "Nice use of violent alliteration! Boy, when the passive ones go aggressive, they really go, baby, go!"

Yuri: *waves hand to shush Kumi* "What precisely did he say to Wren? Did he threaten her?"

Lark: "No, but he threatened Fletcher's trust fund. He said that if they went through with the wedding he would cut Fletch off without a dime."

Yuri: "But Fletcher does not care about his trust fund! He has never had extravagant tastes and does not mind living modestly in the least! He would not have batted an eye before choosing Wren over the money! His father surely knows it, too!"

Kumi: *sits back, mulls it over* "But Fletch does care a great deal about the pro bono work he does for battered women. He wants to start a non-profit. It's always been his dream, and the trust fund--"

Lark: "Plays a vital role in that dream. Wren knows it, and his father knows it, so he used it. He used it as leverage to get Wren to walk away. He said, if she didn't break off the engagement, he would not only fire Fletch from the family law firm, but also make it impossible for him to get another job or independent funding for his non-profit."

Yuri (shrilly): "WHAT?!"

Kumi: *straightens up* "You have got to be *censored* joking me!"

Candy & Emma: *quietly come out of the dressing room to listen*

Lark: *spits words out furiously* "He has political aspirations for his son, and Wren doesn't fit his idea of a proper, little wife! She's not good enough!"

--Lark's declaration hangs heavily in the air as the girls process the bombshell--

Day 98 - First day at a new job

Day 98 - First day at a new job

I woke up this morning at 7 A.M. with conflicting emotions.

On one hand, I was happy to have a temporary job in a law firm that pays so well, on the other hand.. it's so far removed from my dream job situation or anything I had even trained for.. it was a little unnerving.

I'm stepping out of my element

But lets face it. According to a recent SF Chronicle article..It takes an average of 3-7 months of job hunting to find your dream job these days and I'd rather do temporary stints during the process than sign up for something more permanent and get stuck...It's only a week of my life.

While I slid on my stockings and pulled back my hair.. I tried to look at it as an adventure. I thought of Ally McBeal and Dancing babies.. Lawyers are just people too after all. I shouldn't be so intimidated by the expensive suits.

I pulled on a pair of sneakers and put my high-heels in my purse. I kissed Eric goodbye and walked out the front door. As I strolled down Clay street, I could see the Financial district at the bottom of the steep hills..the tall buildings made of glass, the bay bridge..It really was a beautiful view. (see previous picture)

I continued my walk and blended in with all the other adults wearing business attire, walking briskily to their jobs, sporting I-pods in their ears and fancy handbags slung over their shoulders. They didn't seem to notice that I was a newbie or how I was gazing up at all the skyscrapers like a complete tourist. I was feeling a mixture of awe and terror...clutching the FED EX package and the print out with the address of my new job.

The building that loomed in front of me was also made entirely of glass and seemed to stretch up as far as the eye could see. I've never worked in a building this tall and pretentious-looking before. My first instinct was to run away screaming. What was I doing here?

I exchanged the comfortable sneakers for those dreaded high heels and pushed through the glass doors into the expansive intimidating lobby. The clicking of my heels against the floor seemed to echo as I walked to the front desk to sign in. I was handed an ID badge and instructed to go to the 24th floor.

I took a deep breath, stepped into an elevator filled with suits and pressed number 24. The big thick metal doors slid shut.

I'll write more about the experience of my first day tomorrow. I'm exhausted right now and I just want to take a long hot shower.

Yes, I survived it.

NOTE: This picture is a sad attempt at Take a Class with Dave's Week 53 assignment. "CUBISM"

Bedford Square: East Side

Bedford Square: East Side

Lord Chancellor Eldon lived here from 1804 to 1816 it now houses New York University's London Academic Facility.

This is one of the four Palladian style, stucco centre pieces in Bedford Square. They were originally painted to look like stone ( The stuccoed centrepieces were originally finished in four or five coats of Liardet's stucco, painted, incised and colour-washed to imitate real stone. The stucco was made to a recipe patented by a Swiss clergyman in the 1773 and much used, and indeed heavily promoted, by the Adam brothers, who became partners in the company. Unfortunately for the Adams, Liardet's product proved highly unreliable, and was soon falling off houses all over London. It is likely that the Bedford Square centrepieces were, in common with much of the capital, refaced in one of the more stable stuccoes that came onto the market after 1797) but like most Georgian building now they've been painted white. Why? All of Regent's Park houses are painted cream and look so much better. The entire square is Grade I listed.
Bedford Square is one of the finest and best preserved Georgian squares in London it was named after Bedford House, the ancestral home of the 5th Duke of Bedford. This was auctioned off and demolished in 1800. (Bedford Place was built in it's place) The square was built between 1775 and 1783 four houses were designed by Thomas Leverton, it would seem that the remainder was not designed by a major architect. The design of the terrace fronts and the schemes for internal planning were probably devised by the surveyor Robert Palmer, who had recently worked with James Adam. It seems, however, that Palmer worked closely with the builders William Scott and Robert Grews, who were effectively responsible for overall supervision of the site after Palmer died in 1776. All of the square's houses were built by individual builders, each of whom had a separate contract with the Bedford Estate. The absence of a professionally-trained architect as the scheme's principal guide is underlined by the form of stucco centrepieces on the north and south sides, which commit the architectural solecism of including a five-pilastered portico. Bedford Square, along with other large-scale developments of the time, was built according to the speculative practices established after London's Great Fire of 1666. The freeholder--in this case the Bedford Estate--would lease out each plot to a builder-speculator. The latter would be permitted to erect the carcase of a building at a minimal, peppercorn rent, levied for a predetermined period, and be responsible for arranging the first commercial let. (In Bedford Square's case, the first lets usually lasted 80 or 99 years.) The house would then be finished internally to the first lessee's requirements, and on occupation the lessee would be charged the full rental. The fact that most of the Bedford Square leases were assigned by the mid-1780s suggests that the square was immediately popular, the initial leaseholders generally being lawyers, doctors or merchants. By the end of the century the square was being hailed as one of the most fashionable addresses in London for 'the aristocracy of the City and the Inns of Court.
