1896 Oliver Wendell Holmes Portrait Sarah W. Whitman - ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAVURE - Original Photogravure "Portrait of Oliver Wendell Holmes." This is an original 1896 first impression photogravure, by Goupil, of a painting by American artist, Sarah W. Whitman. The actual image measures 8.5 x 10.75 inches. Period Paper has obtained arguably the finest collection of original, hand-pulled, museum-quality photogravures of the art displayed at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (The World's Columbian Exposition). Over the last several years we have obtained and sold thousands of items from this Exposition, and we continue to offer other lithographs, prints, and photogravures. However, this group of original museum-quality photogravures are the finest available in the world. Their condition is unsurpassed. The artistry in the creation of these photogravures has produced the most clear, detailed, and broad tonal ranges that we have ever seen. The Intaglio process used for this collection is far superior to the more mechanical photogravures and rotogravures that we often see. We have inspected these under 10x magnification --the detail is exceptional and the stock, flawless. The plate impressions are deep and very visible to the naked eye but do not show up well on the digital image. This collection took three years to create from the original works of art at the Exposition. The project was overseen or contributed to by the Commissioner of Fine Arts for France, the Royal Special Commissioner of Fine Arts for Italy, the Vice-President of the International Jury for the Fine Arts, the Assistant Commissioner of Fine Arts for Holland, and the lithographers of Goupil. Currently, original photogravures like these from the late nineteenth century have been solid performers at Christie's and Sotheby's with ten unsigned photogravures selling for $5,000-$49,000 and one signed photogravure selling for $91,000. (9) Forslund Furniture and Carpets - Grand Rapids, Michigan - 1957 These slides and photographs are just one set from my "estate sales" collections. They were dusty, darkened, bent, underexposed and were destined to be trash. Through the help of Photoshop, they can be displayed once again. Please feel free to leave any comments - your thoughts, impressions... It is happily appreciated! Enjoy! Fondant Impressions This was just a test cake to try out my cheapie version of a fondant impression mat. I bought vinyl fabric at Hobby Lobby for $6. It works perfect to get a nice floral impression on the fondant. american impressions furniture "Mother and Sleeping Child." I stopped for a haircut at the town’s namesake barber shop. The barber shop interior is painted a dark green with dark upholstered furniture, but was illumined by sunlight. There are two barber chairs with eight customer waiting chairs. The inside is dominated by large mirrors, over which a shelf hangs. On this shelf are various caps (mostly military and local sports). Barber memorabilia (signs, a barber pole, and branded smocks) is also inside, as is a corner display of East Carolina University. Hanging along one wall is a new flatscreen TV. The barber, Mike Wallace, may have served in the Marines and Reserves (he looks to be in his late 30s), as a poster for the reserves hangs on the wall. The customer before me talked about politics (he is a fan of Nixon, but not Clinton), but I did little to encourage conversation when it was my turn. The other barber was there and cut a little boy’s hair. I paid Mike $10 for the haircut. (11) Ishan Church The monastery of Ishan is situated in the village of Ishan, in the province of Artvin. Only the magnificent church and the adjacent chapel have survived. The earliest mention of the monastery is found in The Life of Grigol Khandza, a Georgian manuscript dating from the year 951, which is now kept in Jerusalem. In this manuscript it is stated that Saba, the nephew and follower of the priest Grigol Khanzda, founded a monastery on the site of an earlier church. The first church built by Nerses III (641-661) who found refuge in Ishan, had a tetraconch plan (a central dome with four apses radiating to the cardinal points) and was presumably damaged during the Arab invasions of the 7th century. Five Georgian inscriptions within the church and on the southern facade indicate different restoration periods, from 917 until 1032. From the 12th to the end of the 14th century, large vestibules were added to the south, west and north facades. The monastery used to be one of the five patriarchates of Tao-Klarjeti and its church functioned as a cathedral until the 17th century. It was used as the headquarters for the Ottoman officers during the Ottoman-Russian wars in the 19th century, while its west arm was converted into a mosque and remained so until 1983. In 1987, the Turkish Ministry of Culture registered Ishan as a national cultural monument and the site is now protected. The church (outer dimensions 35.00 x 20.70 meters) is a domed cruciform structure. The dome over the central square bay rests on four free-standing piers, each having a diameter of about two-meters. The eastern cross-arm is extended with an apse that has a unique arrangement. A horseshoe-shaped arcade whose arches rest on eight monolithic columns with decorated cubic capitals opens on to a rectangular ambulatory. The rooms flanking the apse have upper stories. There are two story pastophoria which were used to store priestly vestments and altar furniture. The elongated west cross-arm is about three times deeper than the south and north cross-arms. During the conversion of the church into a mosque, a wall was constructed between the west arm and the central bay, the south and west entrances were closed, a mihrab niche facing in the direction of Mecca was constructed within the closed southern entrance, and the northern annex was converted into a prayer hall. In 966, the interior walls of the church were covered with frescoes. Only the paintings in the cupola and the drum have come down to us. In the cupola the “Ascension of the Cross” is depicted, where a jeweled cross is being carried by four flying angels. Below this scene, repeated four times at each axis, is a two-wheeled chariot, drawn by four winged horses and driven by a standing figure. Above each chariot there is a Georgian inscription mentioning the colours of the horses. This repetitive scene is generally accepted as depicting the “Vision of Zachariah” (6:1-6) from the Old Testament. Within the blind arcade of the drum, eight standing figures alternate with eight windows. During the restoration work in 1032 the heads of these figures identified as prophets by some scholars, were replaced by round openings. Above each prophet, in a circular niche, an angel holding a scepter is depicted. On the arches of the windows there are the busts of other holy figures. The rest of the frescoes found on the north, south and west walls are severely damaged and are in need of restoration. However, a female figure dressed in blue, carrying a diadem and holding a church model in her hand can still be observed on the intrado of the northwestern window. This figure has been interpreted by scholars either as the Cappadocian nun Nino, who converted the Georgians to Christianity, or the first Christian queen of Georgia, or a symbol of the church itself. The facades of the church constructed with well-cut, multi-coloured stones are enlivened by recessed blind arcades and deep triangular niches. The same arrangement is repeated on the dome of the drum where the blind arcades enclose rectangular and circular windows. The conical roof of the dome is covered with alternating rows of dark red and grey coloured glazed tiles. 22 different geometric and floral motives are employed in the sculptural decoration of the church. The patterns of the capitals and bases of the columns, of the arches and window frames, of the drums and cornices do not follow a strict decorative program. The only figurative decoration, a combat between a lion and what may be a dragon or a snake, can be seen on the sill of a window on the southern facade of the west cross-arm. According to the Georgian inscription placed on the entrance of the chapel, situated to the southwest of the cathedral, King Gurgen I (†1008) dedicated the chapel to the Mother of God. Constructed in 1006, the chapel (outer dimensions 10.30x5.70 meters) is a single-naved, vaulted structure with an apse and two windows, one to the east and the other to the west Ishan Church 40°47'8.86"N 41°44'49.12"E Google Earth link. Day #84 [11.02.08] there seems to be so much going on i dont have a grip on it all. i've let myself skip four tests. two of which were half of my history grade. i dont know how i keep doing this. because i remind myself constantly to get it done, and then when it comes time, my memory slips away and i have no idea that i missed it. I'm going to fail this semester. I know i am. and i almost dont want to even deal with it all next semester. I'm going to be in school forever. Because i continuously fail one semester, and pass the next with flying colors. Maybe I should just not go in the fall and only attend school every spring. it seems to work for me. i feel like staying in bed like this all day, although i know i have to be at work in a little under two hours. i've very anti-doing anything today. and, again, i have a test in my online english class that i have to come home and remember to do after work. *sigh* working two jobs was probably not the best of choices for me to make right now. I'm not even sure if i'm going to go back to school next year. I am wondering how my parents would react if i just merely took the fall semester off. I'm not so sure this is what i want to do anymore. it seems like lately i've been trying so hard to succeed at everything, that i'm just causing myself to fail. i need a break. yes. my sheets are hot pink. i'm slowly adding "redo bedroom" to my to do list. I have a ton of stuff hidden at work that i'm going to buy and use to decorate a little later. but i also need to work on what i'm going to do about accessories and paint. and who i'm going to get to help me. i can't paint on my own. in case you haven't noticed, i'm tiny. and i have big furniture to move. not something i can easily accomplish by myself. i feel kind of alone lately. not alone as in there's absolutely no one around, but... a different kind. I'm not sure i can explain it. but while i know i have my best friends, my family, and my few "we're-friends-but-whatever" friends... and the boy that takes up my thoughts... i dont feel... content. i feel disconnected and like there's no one to help me. I'm not sure how to fix it. ...i feel like i'm drowning. dresser/desk this is one of my favorite pieces of furniture, ever. it's a very small secretery/writing desk which i think is vintage from the 20's or 30's. there are slots for mail and tiny drawers for supples, and the top slides down like a roll-top. also, a work surface slides out from the top. there are three drawers below the writing surface which i use as a dresser. this piece is fantastic, if not in great condition, and it's served me very well over the past few years. the only problem is that i now officially have too many clothes and there just isn't room here for all of it. also, i will soon be bringing the desk which is now serving as a media stand in the living room into here, so i won't need a dresser that converts into a work space. but it's a beautiful piece! it's the only actual antique i own! how can i give this up? (19) 1934 Hispano Suiza J12 T68 Coupe de Ville Rothschild rear With the 1931-1938 Hispano-Suiza J12, Hispano-Suiza brought together Swiss design, Spanish capital, and French production facilities to create what many consider the world's best automobile of the mid-1930s, Rolls-Royces and the Grosser Mercedes notwithstanding. The J12 was offered only as a rolling chassis, with massive construction and a choice of four wheelbases. The huge "square" V-12 (long stroke engine optional) was an engineering masterpiece, but burned fuel as rapidly as you'd expect in an enormously heavy car. Still, it could move the car 0-60 in 12 seconds and on past 100. Bodywork, of course, was to customer choice, and most examples carried every luxury and convenience feature imaginable at the time. A very few were built with sporty styles, those by Saoutchik being the most memorable and striking. The J12 is a genuine international Classic of interest today only to a very fortunate few. In late 1931, Howard A. Darrin met J. Fernandez, a wealthy Argentinian-born Parisian banker and furniture maker, at one of the many Concours d' Elegance held in and around Paris. Fernandez had a large shop in the Parisian suburb of Boulogne-sur-Seine near Long-champs where he manufactured custom built furniture and the occasional auto body for the local Isotta-Fraschini distributor and other Parisian distributors. According to Darrin, decisions at Fernandez & Darrin were made with an absolute disregard for cost. Beauty, utility, and safety were the firm’s prime considerations, so it’s not surprising that a staff of 200 produced less than ten finished bodies per month. Darrin recalled that most of the firm’s sales were in the 125,000 to 1,000,000 francs range, roughly $10,000 - $40,000, depending on the body style and whether the customer supplied the chassis or not. The firm’s most popular chassis were built by Delage, Hispano-Suiza and Isotta-Fraschini. They even produced a small series of semi-custom bodies for Isotta that were sold by the firm’s European and British distributors although prohibitive tariffs prevented the coachwork from imported to Italy. They also built on Bentley, Bugatti, Buick, Delahaye, Duesenberg, Hispano-Suiza, Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, Packard, Panhard, Renault, Rolls-Royce and Voisin chassis. In March of 1934, Anthony Gustav de Rothschild ordered a matched set of Hispano-Suizas, one for formal occasions, the other for cruising around town. The two cars were ordered through Hispano-Suiza’s London Agent, J. Smith & Co. Ltd. and Fernandez & Darrin were selected to furnish the bodies, which were to be finished in identical colors and complimentary styles. The cars were completed in six months and delivered to the Rothschilds at the end of September. The first of two bodies was a Coupe Chauffeur limousine built for the longer K6 chassis (15008) having a 146.5-inch wheelbase. This car was more formal, having a closed passenger compartment and quieter, less powerful engine. The outward design is quite remarkable, having very few parallel lines with two extremely raked windscreens and a teardrop rear end. The car stayed with the family over 50 years. Oak Front Platform Bed Storage Drawers - Free Standing - Solid Wood - Hand Rubbed Danish Oil Under bed drawers are a great accessory for our platform and bunkbeds. These Solid Wood Drawers Unfinished are the perfect solution to keeping a bedroom organized, and they match our platform beds perfectly! They will also work with any other bed that has at least a 7 3/4 inch clearance underneath (and 74 inches inside dimension form head to toe of bed). They allow you to get the most space out of a small place. Under bed storage drawers are ideal for storing shoes, toys, books, blankets, papers, and any other items that tend to clutter up your space. Assembly is easy and it comes with the hardware and tools needed. Our drawers are built on four plastic wheels, so they will not scratch floors. They glide easily on carpet too, but if you have really thick carpet, we can advise you how to adapt them to promote an easier glide. Visit our Room Doctor website for information on Staining Options or call us for help. Our Beautiful Hand Rubbed Danish Oil Finish serves as a conditioner for the wood and will no doubt serve you well for many years. Its clear color will not change the natural color of the wood or the grain, but it will enhance both as it ages, to produce that rich aged look we all appreciate. Because the oil fills the pores of the wood, finger prints and day to day dirt are less likely to be absorbed into the wood in comparison to unfinished wood. NOTE: Danish Oil is NOT the same as a Lacquered/Glossy Finish; instead it is oil that leaves a slightly silky feel to natural untreated wood. This listing is for one set (2 drawers) of Oak Platform Bed Drawers with Danish Oil , but we also sell them in Pine, AND in Alternate Finishes. NOTE: Only the drawer front is Finished, but you can request to have the sides finished if that is more desirable. (11) Worst Parking Spot Ever at the Worst Hospital Ever They are the "Greatest Generation." Threadbare and creative with recycling, they survived the Great Depression. The men, without reservation, signed up for probable death fighting imperialism in the Pacific and fascism and utter horror in Europe. The women, unable to fight in the military, stayed home and kept the country's factories and infrastructure running. As a sign of respect, men wore hats and removed them upon entering a building, also as a sign of respect. After the war, women outside the workforce kept the houses clean, raised the children, and had dinner waiting when their husbands came home from work. Before buying a piece of clothing, stitches underwent the scrutiny of the consumer, and fabric ran between judgmental fingers. People expected to buy furniture only once, ever, and furniture was treated with delicacy; often covered with plastic to protect the fabric from stains. Members of this generation referred to each other respectfully, using the nearly antiquated terms "Missus, Mister, and Miss," until it was agreed that to do so would negate the intimacy of friendships that were built to last as long as the furniture. Neighbors could be relied upon to wave a friendly greeting and lend the occasional cup of sugar. This is the generation that bears witness to the 20th century in its entirety. Members don't have to use the Wikipedia to know who Joe McCarthy was and what he was about. The Greatest Generation lived passionately, paving the way for Civil Rights to take hold, for women and other minorities to start to knock down the walls of prejudice and inequality. I am proud that my grandmother is a member of that Generation. She remembers everything. She can solve a New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle in 10 minutes flat. After I'd been practicing the game of cribbage for a year, I challenged her to a game. She skunked me no less than three times in one game. And don't you dare call her "Kaye." It's "Mrs. Clarke" to you, buster. She is a formidable woman, a product of the years she lived and survived as the daughter of settlers on Vashon Island, later living in both Anchorage and Seattle. Few non-Japanese people were certified to teach the intricate and difficult method of Japanese embroidery called Bunka. As long as I can remember, her fingers were nimble and sure, working quickly to fill an 18x36 canvas with embroidered images of fish, roses, birds, and replications of classic and historic paintings and landscapes. She tried to teach me Bunka, but I didn't have the patience. As a member of Generation X, my mind wanders, even when my hands are not idle, devil's playthings. I couldn't stare at the needle and thread as my fingers worked to poke it through canvas, trapping the thread below with a firm scratch, for hours at a time. My grandmother could embroider all day and into the night, and she taught many Japanese immigrants her art, which originated in their country of origin. She is still corresponding with the majority of those women, and is fond of reminiscing about the days her basement classroom was full of the delightful Japanese women who attended class toward the sole end of maintaining their heritage and traditions. Every time she and I enter a restaurant where she's been before, there's a staff member who remembers her kindness and faithful correspondence with them and their families. Everybody loves her. She smiles without reason, and laughs easily with a palpable generosity of spirit and friendship. Until she re-married at the age of 81, Gram worked for at least three companies as a bookkeeper. She loathes inactivity, and it drives her crazy to have the television on during the day, unless there's a baseball game to watch. A couple of years ago, Gram was diagnosed with congenital heart failure. She's been able to lessen her decline with medication and concentrated oxygen intake. Occasionally, she requires hospitalization, usually for one night or so. Yesterday, she was admitted into Valley Medical Center through the Emergency Room. She had fluid on her heart, and could barely breathe. Death drew nearer to her than it had ever dared. She waited six hours to be seen. Upon examining her, the ER doctor said, "If she was 50 years old, I'd run all sorts of tests, but in her state, there isn't a lot I can do." He admitted her, thus transferring responsibility of her care to another physician. He all but said, "Let's just put her in a room and let her die." Overnight, with medication, Gram clawed her way back to life. Her nurse confirmed that she was in decent shape, and would probably be discharged. A family member was with her all day until about 6 in the evening. No doctor had examined or even seen Gram since the ER last night; nearly 24 hours would pass before one would. In the HOSPITAL, where there is a high concentration of physicians, not a single doctor even poked a head in her My Fave Place to relax Misson: Shots of beautiful homes are inspiring and invite readers to journey past the page and into the homes. Show me a favourite corner of your home (or any cosy corners in your favourite hangout place). Composition is greatly under control (arrangement of furniture etc). Another important requirement is that the photo have no people in it if possible. This is one of the reason why you can always almost imagine yourself living in that beautiful home in the magazine, because you don't see any people in it. For those of us who might want to use more equipment, wide angle lens is almost essential to show more of the room, and lighting to achieve the effect you want. WIT (What It Took): Well it's been a busy week - car trouble, Doctors appts, meetings and a funeral service today along with company from out of town. Needless to say, I didn't do much in the way of cleaning or staging - basically, I moved the dogs bed from the area by the side table and put my knitting in a bag. I did some tone mapping because the sunlight coming in through the window really blew out my whole side of the loveseat. Added a little warming filter and some tough up saturation to the wood on the coffee table since the tone mapping washed it out. This really is my favorite spot to sit and read, knit, listen to music and hold conversation. Welcome to my home. room doctor furniture company Be prepared for any medical emergency with the FisherPrice Medical Kit Pink. This case is just what the doctor ordered with a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, thermometer, play syringe and bandage. The stethoscope really works so you can listen in amazement to your patients real heartbeat. The bloodpressure cuff really pumps so you can fit the sleeve and watch as the spinning gauge goes around and around. The sicktowell thermometer helps you keep track of your patients health, and a fun, springloaded syringe is included for tough cases. (8) Vintage Credenza We're currently taking stock of all the furniture we have and deciding what we plan to keep and what we're getting rid of. This vintage credenza is a keeper! When some of our neighbors moved out of our old apartment building 4 years ago they left this vintage unmarked ('50s or maybe early '60s?) credenza behind. It was destined for Good Will or a dump so we nabbed it. We think it was repainted at one time and it's missing the original door handles. It's also damaged in a lot of areas. It currently holds up our TV but we plan to fix it up and turn it into a bar (please excuse the mess! we're still living out of boxes.) More Living room console and coffee table (nesting against wall) were a going out of biz find. I did set out for the rug. I bought it two apartments ago (6 years ago) I think I'm ready to move it to the bedroom and get a new rug for Living room once I determine the style. tv credenza furniture Ready for a fresh take on Mission Furniture?
