Powerful Tornado Damages Downtown Atlanta

ATLANTA — A powerful tornado scored a direct hit on the commercial center of downtown Atlanta on Friday night, blowing windows out of dozens of high-rise buildings, tossing trees and cars, and severely damaging many of the city’s landmarks, including the CNN Center, the Georgia Dome, Philips Arena, Grady Memorial Hospital and Centennial Olympic Park.

At least 27 people were injured and transported to local hospitals, said Capt. Bill May of Atlanta’s Fire Rescue Department, most with cuts and bruises from flying glass and debris.

The weather service said the tornado’s winds reached 130 miles an hour and in only 20 minutes cut a path six miles long and 200 yards wide through the downtown area. There was considerable damage to the area’s older trees, which was made worse by the region’s long drought, weather officials said.

Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin declared a state of emergency in the city at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, a designation needed to make the city eligible for federal recovery money.

No fatalities had been reported by Saturday morning, though crews were still combing through a condominium building in the southeastern part of the city where four floors had fallen on each other, making search and rescue operations difficult and dangerous.

The severity of the sudden storm surprised forecasters, who broke into prime-time programming Friday night around 9:40 p.m. to report that possible tornadoes could be heading for the downtown area. Thousands of people had gathered in the sports and convention area for two basketball games and a dental convention.

The twister brought what was supposed to be a busy Saturday to a near-standstill. The convention was canceled, as was the St. Patrick’s Day parade and the Atlanta Home Show, both scheduled for Saturday. The Southeastern Conference basketball playoffs were moved to a smaller stadium open to players and their families only.

The storm damaged the roof of the CNN Center, sucking the furniture out of the lobby and allowing storm water to pour into the newsroom. CNN said one of its computers had been sucked through a broken window and that dust, glass and water were scattered around the building, though the network stayed on the air to report on the city’s damage.

The storm passed right through the heart of the city, wreaking havoc on landmarks large and small. It blew the windows out of Ted Turner’s restaurant, called Ted’s Montana Grill, and the Tabernacle, a popular concert venue. Skyscrapers were pocked with broken windows and billboards were twisted into skeletal scaffolds. Debris and glass carpeted the usually busy streets, making them impassible.

Brenton Young, a dentist from Shelby, N.C., had just put his drink order in at Thrive, a chic downtown restaurant, when street-level windows started exploding. “People were jumping up and screaming,” Mr. Young said. “We didn’t know if a car had hit the building or what had happened. People were hitting the floor. People were running for the center. It was a chaotic three seconds.”

Cheryl Denton, also in town for the convention, said she was in her hotel when the storm hit. “It just came up all of a sudden,” she said. “We looked out the window and stuff started swirling, and it was there and gone that quick.”

Her friend Dwayne Hawkins added, “It was on the news and it hit 15 minutes later.”

At a 2 a.m. news conference Saturday, Kelvin J. Cochran, the fire and rescue chief, said it would take 24 to 36 hours to complete the search and rescue operation.

One of the 11 people who were taken to Grady Hospital had life-threatening injuries, a spokeswoman for the hospital said, but by Saturday morning the condition of that victim had been upgraded to stable. The 10 others had been treated and released.

A few blocks away, where the Southeastern Conference men’s basketball playoffs were under way, players from both teams froze, mouths gaping on the court, when part of the fabric roof was torn away by the force of the storm, allowing a sudden gush of wind to blow through the Georgia Dome. Catwalks at the top of the dome swayed and bits of insulation rained down on players and fans during overtime of the Mississippi State-Alabama game, halting play and sending spectators scrambling for the exits.

After a 65-minute delay to sweep the court and make sure the facility was sound, the game resumed. (Mississippi beat Alabama, 69-67.)

Cory Reavis, a 32-year-old firefighter who lives in the loft building where several floors collapsed, said that most of the damage had occurred in a part of the complex that was under renovation and thus not occupied. But Mr. Reavis said he had helped rescue one man in another part of the complex.

“He was sleeping and the roof collapsed on top of him,” he said. Mr. Reavis said the man’s injuries were not serious.

TRIBUTE TO LEGO SET 6891 - Part 10

This ship is a part of a serie of 20 MOCs. The whole project is a tribute to the famous Lego set 6891, released in 1985 (25th anniversary this year !). I loved this set as a kid. Each MOC have DNA from the original set, but I've experimented a lot on each one, so some of them won't looks exactly as the 6891. Hope you'll find the concept creative and that you'll like this serie !

Today was such a good day! Todd and I went to Ashley Furniture and purchased our new bedroom set! Our room is filled with so many mismatched and random pieces and I cannot wait to have our new giant bed with matching furniture. So we stopped at Starbucks on the way home to celebrate. He is so good.

After buffing

Briwax is kind of strange in that the final step in the process is to buff the surface with nylon, and the best material for that is pantyhose. You can imagine the look the lady at Walmart gave me when i asked her to help me find the pantyhose.

Anyway, the way it's purported to work is that the nylon heats up the wax and melts it into all the cracks in the surface of the wood. However it does works, it brings a beautiful sheen to the piece.

Wiping the excess

After the wax has dried for a few minutes, you're supposed to wipe off the excess with a clean rag. A pretty dirty rag will do.

Someone got very comfy this afternoon

We normally don't leave our quilts/bedding on the ground. This an old queen size quilt. Adam was sick early last week and slept on the couch to try to avoid giving his bug to me....didn't work. I've been home sick since last Friday.

Anyway, he has left the quilt on the ground, ready to be packed up and put back in the vacuum bag.

Oscar decided to make himself comfy in it today. He has been sleeping most of the day, he must have been so comfy, he normally follows me around every time I move....not today.

May Bush

Every first of May a small number of mainly farming families just north
of St. John's put up May Bushes, usually at the front of their property
or within sight of the road. The bushes stay up through the month of
May. Some families see it as a thoroughly Roman Catholic tradition and
their bushes are festooned with blue ribbons to indicate the Marian
Month; they add red ribbons on the first of June (the Sacred Heart
Month). Each family has its own version of the tradition, some less
religious than others, but they all go back to an old Irish tradition of
May Trees and some families retain a sense of covertness. The Outer
Cove farmer whose unberibboned bush is here always puts one at his home
(right) and at his main barn about 300 feet away, off the left of the
picture. Even local residents and neighbours who drive by every day in
May can be completely oblivious of the tradition if their own family
doesn't take part.

As it happens, this is near the city airport, so there's an aeroplane
landing behind the May Bush. By most May Firsts, the winter's snow is
all but completely gone. Farmers see May 1st as the date to start their
outdoor work. Birds (like starlings, left) have started moving around
looking for spring food.

The XA is a good little camera but it vignettes about two stops on the
sides and in the corners. I sometimes like the effect this produces,
like here in the sky. This picture was slightly processed in Paint Shop
Pro, for instance to lighten the vignetted trees on the right and to add
some contrast in the middle sky. If you hate digital artefacts, don't
look too closely.

Noor Mahal , Bahawalpur

Noor Mahal the italian style palace of the fifth ruler of Bahawalpur State, Nawab Sir Muhammad Sadiq, is the latest monument in the Punjab to be notified under the Antiquities Act.Completed in AD 1875, one of the most exquisite buildings in the state, Noor Mahal was meant for the residence of the Nawab. He, however, did not lived here for a singal day after being cautioned against doing so on account of its proximity to the Basti Muluk Shah graveyard.

Supervised by Mr Heenan, a British Engineer, the palace was later used as the state guest house. The Nawab also held occasional cabinet meetings here and gave audience to notable guests. On some occasions the palace was used as the State Court for the Nawab's address to his courtiers. Noor Mahal was built in the middle of a spacious garden having a water tank and fountains. Thick carpets covered its verandahs and the walls were decorated with paintings, most of them by western artists.

The two-storey palace had exquisite furniture and fixtures like chandeliers and cupboards. There was a rich collection of arms in its armoury.Some swords and muskets were also displayed on the palace walls. A mosque, styled like the one at the Aitchison College, was added to the palace by Nawab Bahawal Khan, a later ruler of the state of Bahawalpur. The palace was completed at a cost of RS. 1.2 million. Repairs half a century later cost Rs. 100,000. The mosque was built at a cost of Rs. 20,000. The property dispute among the heirs of the last ruler resulted in Noor Mahal (as well as several other buildings) being abandoned.

This is either the house or where she lived or it's next to the site where her house soon stood. Inside the sparsely furnished two-storey house (built in 1740 but restored to how it appeared in early 1777), you can see Betsy's sewing machine and other tools. This is the only colonial upholstery shop remaining in the USA.

The image of Betsy Ross sewing the first American flag has been imprinted in the minds of Americans since the late 1800s, when the legend of Ross making the flag was first taught as a true historic event.

The Stars and Stripes remain one of the nation's most prominent symbols of national unity and common purpose, and the desire to know - with certainty - who made the first flag continues to this day. Although no official records exist to authenticate the story of Betsy Ross and the making of the flag, this patriotic story has become a colourful thread in the complext tapestry of colonial American history during the founding days of the nation.

This 1740 Philadelphia rowhouse is restored to about the year 1777, when Ross, as the story tells it, is said to have created the first flag. The Betsy Ross House commemorates both the legendary event and the historical Betsy Ross. In addition, the House is an important urban example of an artisan's dwelling, a place to live and work, in 18th century Philadelphia.

Who was Betsy Ross?

Elizabeth Griscom Ross Ashburn Claypoole was an industrious Quaker seamstress, upholsterer, wife and mother, who ran a successful workshop in Philadelphia's bustling commercial district. Her shop, situated in an area just north of Independence Hall was a few blocks from the Delaware River wharves. Ships from around the world docked here, bringing to the city goods from the four corners of the globe.

In one way especailly, Betsy Ross' life is representative of many Revolutionary era working-class women in Philadelphia and elsewhere in the colonies. Many women, like Ross, were left behind by husbands away in battle, fighting for our country's independence, some of whom ewre seriously injured, even killed, in the cause of freedom. These have women became heads of the family - required to manage workshops and businesses, while simultaneously caring for large and extended families.

Betsy Ross was especailly successful in managing these dual roles - not all single or widowed womn of the period fared as well. Through and apprenticeship begun when she was a teenager, she learned the trade of furniture upholstering, a lucrative skill in Philadelphia, then the acknowledged furniture-making capital of the colonies. Excellent at her trade and industrious by nature, Ross was able to keep her family together - and prosper - despite the tragic deaths of three husbands, two in the cause of Independence.

As a colonial businesswoman, she was entrepreneurial and operated a diverse sewing business. In addition to upholstery work, Ross made bed hangings, linens, ship pennants during and after the Revolutionary War, and, of course, flags. With the help of her oldest daughter Clarissa, she continued running her business well into her seventies.

Born into a Philadelphia Quaker family, the Griscoms, Betsy Ross was the eigth of 17 children.

The Betsy Ross Story

The Betsy Ross story was brought to public attention in 1870 by Ross'grandson William Canby. In a lecture given to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Canby claimed that his grandmother sewed the first flag and that it was a family story passed down through the generations. He regrets that he could not find historical documents to prove the story. Nevertheless, he states that oral tradition is just as valuable a tool for historians to acknowledge the authenticity of an event.

Many 18th century women kept journals and commonplace books (handwritten collections of favourite poems and verses). It is not known whether Betsy Ross kept a journal that recorded - in her own words - the events of her life. Furthermore, early records having to do with women's work were often not considered important enough to save. Primary source documents relating to women's paid and unpaid labour during this period, such as receipts, account books and vouchers, are relatively scarce.

In the great volumns of discarded documents detailing the role of women in the bustling economy of late 18th century Philadelphia, it is entirely possible that a record could have existed, one that would verify a patriotic story - and a family's oral tradition!

I recently thought I had to put away my bird feeders because I couldn't cope with the lawn growing in my garden, but I really missed the birds so today I moved it to a new place in the lawn where new grass would be a good thing. Not as easy as it seams, had to dig a hole, move the b*tch of a thing (HEAVY) and then I had to go and buy birdseed because I'd misplaced the half full bags I had left (found about 2 hours later -- HA!). I love the contrast of colours in this pictures.

This western design sits on a square foot brown linoleum tile. There are felt grippers on the bottom to protect the furniture. A brown wooden fence serves as the backboard and is decorated at each end of the top cross post with a gold concho. In front of the fence, to the left, is a ceramic piece which also has a fence encased in barbed wire with a wagon wheel, cowboy hat, kerchief, and a cow skull. To the right of this is a Crown Royal bottle, which serves as the light source and is illuminated with a string of 20 count lights. Draped around the bottom of the bottle and swinging upward around the neck of the bottle, is a leather western belt. On the left side of the base, in the front, is a metal napkin holder in the shape of two horses. To the right of the napkin holder is a Crown Royal glass filled with fake ice cubes.

"Saranac Inn" Stools

By request, I have made even more of these sturdy, rustic stools that stand a comfortable 24 inches off the floor. The legs are of solid white birch limbs, and their silver maple cross braces are lashed with leather lace. Their seats are of inlaid Red Dogwood fashioned in my original mosaic twig design, and trimmed with ripped Silver Maple, painted in "Saranac Tan".
A triple polyurethane coating seals and protects the intricate mosaic work and trim.

The owners of this Spanish Mission revival home, called "Casa de Fuentes" (1023) have done absolutely everything right, from the subdued chamois stucco walls and burnt umber trim to the slightly brighter shade of brown on the second floor balcony roof. The landscaping is superior, from the concrete edging on the front flower beds to the brick driveway. All is neatness and order and it works to make the home a stand out in the 1920s Rio Vista collection of houses. The triple grouped windows and squared massing of the main second floor make this seem almost California Spanish Revival in feeling. It would be very much at home in LaJolla amid some Irving Gill residences.

Hardesty, who had made his fortune with the Hardesty Manufacturing Company, an arts and crafts furniture company, in Dover, Ohio, but had moved to Florida in 1922 to deal in real estate. By 1927, a hotel, 38 homes and more than 15 miles of paved roads had been developed. But this all came to a halt upon the advent of the Great Depression.

Dimitri Vangrunderbeek conceived a cupboard in collaboration with D&ALab. The starting idea comes from his moving figurines, cut out of paper, which are folded on the top to the piece of furniture’s feet (1991).

The nice pattern, based on twelve figurines taken from a Muybridge’s photographs sequence, gives us an animated image thanks to the figurines which are set out in various directions and which create a moving effect using their shaping and the variation of their shadow.

To produce this work, D&ALab provided the thin steel sheets and brought a special technique in order to cut down these little shapes from the thin steel sleeves.

A delightfully interesting bit of streetscape too, and all the better for the hotch-potch effect. Thank goodness there was no such thing as Planning in those days. Although the district's customary animation is missing on the afternoon of Christmas Day, the absence of traffic and business activity make it a good time to stroll around and enjoy the curiosities of the district.
Am I alone in objecting to th ...yes, I've found something else to moan about ...the great proliferation of bollards, especially in London? My trusty Newnes dictionary (1971) defines a bollard as "n. a short post on a wharf or a ship, etc., round which ropes are secured" and, interestingly, "[prob. bole]". I wouldn't fancy the chances of any ship tethered to one of these wimpy-looking things, presumably placed as a disincentive to driving over the kerb. It may be argued that the word has been carelessly applied to a superficially similar device with a different function. In that case they should avoid making the things in a form that mimics the genuine quayside bollard. Aside from the fact that they are a faux pas, they are simply another bit of ignorant "heritage" street furniture, probably made in 2005 by a firm (Subtopia Designs Ltd) operating from a trading estate outside Newport Pagnell, and kept artificially spruce with an annual coat of black paint ...mouldings picked out in gold in the "royal" parts of London. Objectionable in themselves, there is also something annoying in the contrived irregularity of their placement.
I usually find that even the most successful digital photographs shot in colour and converted to black and white, have disagreeably "muddy" tones. This one hasn't turned out too badly though.

Please see the photo I took late this afternoon 6 October and posted on Flickr.

A blue-and-white double mattress and a bedbase in two halves were dumped in Parkhurst Road N17 near the corner with Dowsett Road N17.
(1) Please have them removed.

A black and white "Zone Ends" sign marks the boundary of the Tottenham Hale Controlled Parking Zone. This sign is coming loose and rattling in the wind
(2) Could you arrange to refix the sign.

Lastly you'll notice the 'clutter' of street 'furniture' at this corner. As well as the metal column with the CPZ boundary sign; there's a 20 mph Zone column sign; and a "Give Way" column sign. In the same few metres of pavement there's a green Virgin Media phone cabinet.
(3) In the medium and longer term could some thought be given to the possibility of reducing this clutter by e.g. rationalising the signs.
