If you give me permission, I will show what has been shown to me." – Drunvalo Melchizedek (16) NYC - Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza - Katherine Hepburn Garden On May 12, 1997 community members gathered to dedicate the Katharine Hepburn Garden in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. The naming pays tribute to her lifelong love of flowers and gardening and thanks Ms. Hepburn for her commitment to the park and the neighborhood. A wide variety of species were used in the border planting. The plant list included birch, dawn redwood, and dogwood trees; mountain laurel, witch hazel, viburnum, rhododendron, hydrangea, and abelia; as well as numerous perennials, groundcovers, and ferns. Katharine Hepburn was born on May 12, 1907, in Hartford, Connecticut. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1928 and in the same year she made her professional debut in a minor role in a Baltimore stock company production of Czarina. By 1932 she was a star on Broadway in The Warriors Husband, followed in the same year by her screen debut opposite John Barrymore in A Bill of Divorcement. On Broadway Ms. Hepburn originated the Tracy Lord role in The Philadelphia Story (1939) before taking it to Hollywood a year later. In 1942 she starred opposite Spencer Tracy in Woman of the Year and began a twenty-five year relationship which included working on nine classic films. Ms. Hepburn has won numerous honors for her acting. She was nominated for twelve Academy Awards and won four Oscars for best actress. In 1962 Ms. Hepburn won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in Long Days Journey Into Night. In the 1970s she worked in television, where she and co-star Laurence Olivier earned Emmys for Love Among the Ruins. Her two memoirs, Me and The Making of the African Queen, or How I Went to Africa with Bogart, Bacall, and Huston and Almost Lost My Mind, were best sellers. Ms. Hepburn has always gone her own way, wearing slacks, refusing interviews, shunning autograph seekers, keeping her private life private, and all the while speaking her mind. Her passion for flowers and gardening began during her childhood in West Hartford. On Sunday afternoons the Hepburn family went for drives and walks in the hills west of the Connecticut River. The children competed to see who could spot the first Lily of the Valley, Bloodroot, Columbine, or Pink Ladys Slipper. When Ms. Hepburn moved to Turtle Bay with her husband Ludlow Ogden Smith in 1932, she transplanted wildflowers from her parents home to her backyard garden. She joined the Turtle Bay Association in 1957, and for more than thirty years she fought to halt the destruction of trees, to defend the sidewalks from encroaching development, and to protect mid-blocks from high-rise construction. Found: When you go looking for America you are constantly tugging at threads that lead to the different foreign roots we have come to share as a nation of immigrants. At the Living Traditions Festival in Salt Lake City you are confronted by the celebration of those differences. Well entrenched Americans may not remember what cultures they have are originally derived from. But those who know there roots but have grown up unfamiliar with them may get a glimpse of the way they were once upon a time. As you walk through the festival, there is music, dancing, singing, drums and instruments, costumes, and booth after booth of different foods. It isn't as if America is devoid of its own distinctive culture, either. You can hear the blues, jazz, blue-grass, Cajun, Zydeco, and more. The arts and crafts booths, often provide crafts men and women who work at their crafts while you watch. Living Traditions is well named. My favorite cultures to see and hear are the Native Americans. There is nothing like an Inter-Tribal Pow Wow. We have Basque, Cambodians, Vietnamese, India Indians, Swiss, Scottish, Mexicans, Salvadorans, Peruvians, Chinese, Japanese, African, Irish, Jewish, Belarus, Russian, Armenian, Turkish, Tibetan, Sudan, Cajun and many other hypenated Americans here. We are rich and enriched by these differences, and when we come together to celebrate we walk on the common ground that makes us all part of the family of man. It is my hope that we will not take the troubles created by immigration out on the immigrants and to look behind the movement to see what it is that motivates us all. Her Aunt Amy gave me several ideas of things that she liked(dresses and flowers were two of the four theme choices).I like to weave quilling strips, so many of the dresses are woven on the top. I tried to make each one different but keep the same shape of dress.I drew the dress pattern,slid it between the quilling board and a sheet of wax paper then followed the pattern to keep the dresses the same size. The shade of green on one of the dresses is called "Willow",it's one of my favorites.It has little pieces of fibers or plants in it(see the detail pic of the green dress and view it Larger to see what I mean). (8) Queen Of The Brigands Frederick Arthur Bridgman Frederick Arthur Bridgman (November 10, 1847 – January 13, 1928) was an American artist, born in Tuskegee, Alabama. An American Southerner, born in Tuskeegee, Alabama, the son of a physician, Bridgman would become one of the United States' most well-known and well-regarded painters and become known as one of the world's most talented "Orientalist" painters. He began as a draughtsman in New York City, for the American Bank Note Company in 1864-1865, and studied art in the same years at the Brooklyn Art Association and at the National Academy of Design; but he went to Paris in 1866 and became a pupil of Jean-Leon Gerome. Paris then became his headquarters. A trip to Egypt in 1873-1874 resulted in pictures of the East that attracted immediate attention, and his large and important composition, The Funeral Procession of a Mummy on the Nile, in the Paris Salon (1877), bought by James Gordon Bennett, brought him the Cross of the Legion of Honor. Other paintings by him were An American Circus in Normandy, Procession of the Bull Apis (now in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.), and a Rumanian Lady (in the Temple collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). In 1867, Bridgman entered the studio of the noted academic painter Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904), where he was deeply influenced by Gerome's precise draftsmanship, smooth finishes, and concern for Middle-Eastern themes. (Bridgman would even become known as "the American Gerome.") No mere imitator, however, Bridgman would later adopt a more naturalistic aesthetic, emphasizing bright colors and painterly brushwork. Bridgman made his first trip to North Africa between 1872 and 1874, dividing his time between Algeria and Egypt. There he executed approximately three hundred sketches, which became the source material for several later oil paintings. Additional visits to the region throughout the 1870s and 1880s allowed him to amass a collection of costumes, architectural pieces, and objets d'art, which often appear in his paintings. (Amusingly, John Singer Sargent noted that Bridgman's overstuffed studio, along with the Eiffel Tower, were Paris's must-see attractions.) Though Bridgman maintained a lifelong connection to France, his popularity in America never waned. Indeed, in 1890, the artist had a one-man show of over 400 pictures in New York's 5th Avenue galleries. When the show moved to Chicago's Art Institute, it contained only 300 works - testimony to the high number of sales Bridgman had made. One of Bridgman's most recognized Orientalist images, "A Street Scene in Algeria", is exceptional for its biographical and historical significance. Many of its details can be considered "signature" motifs of the artist, and its subject, a pointed record of travel. In keeping with Bridgman's tendency in the 1880s to focus on intimate domestic subjects, two seated male figures are given pride of place in the center of the composition, gesticulating while they chat. Recently, works by the painter have sold at auction in the price range of $250,000 USD to $350,000 USD. He was a lifelong advocate of conservation and the environment, having received the W. Kelly Mosley Environmental Award for his instrumental work in the preservation of the Coosa River. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and sportsman having allegiance to Auburn University. Mr. Fain is a past-president of the Elmore County Historical Society and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for over fifty years. Really Cheap Flower Girl Dresses
Mother Nature I very happy with the results to this shot. This young mother is at 33wks. She was fun to work with and was willing to try some different ideas I had. This shot is a composite shot incorporating several things. First the shot was taken mid aftertoon the light on her face was natural sunlight breaking through the forest canopy,,,no this was not planned but luck always plays a little role. The rest of the light was from three flash's, two 430 ex's and one 580 ex. One of the two 430 ex was behind and to the left of the model (from camera p.o.v.) the other 430 ex was to camera right. The 580 ex was to camera left. All shot full and on bare. Normally I tigger the flash via pocket wizards but I need High speed sync and for some reason my camera does not talk that language in pocket wizard (if it does I can't seem to find how to.) So I used a ST-E2 to trigger the flashes. This is a line of sight trigger and well it makes thing SO MUCH MORE FUN...(not really). I got to say the strobist shots by them selfs came out well but I wanted to add more "flavor". Recently I found some reviews that had mention good things about Dynamic HDR 5 so I got that and have been playing around with it. Working with a single jpeg image and some time later I found myself with a HDR image. I then took that HDR image back to CS4 where more tweeking was done and this was the finished result. So being a amuteur in photography I have to say flickr is the bomb as in learing. I've gotten so much insight into cameras and the programs used with images. Yes I've gotten some books and done some self study but the ideas I'm exposed to here is just so much help. The material for shoot was cheap. The halo wreath was $7.00, Flowered Vine $14.00, and the dress was just a sheer curtain hang purchase from walmart for $16.00. 121/365 Up up and away I had SOOOO much fun doing this shoot today.. even though it was like 29837 degrees outside. Balloons are actually quite cheap to my surprise haha. I think this is all from a packet of seeds purchased from Burpee more than ten years ago as Silene 'Electra' alternatively it came in some packet of "Wildflower" seeds. Silene ameria is rarely offered in flower catalogs. I think probably because it seeds itself in too vigorously for most. Also other nice species. It is often available as a "Wildflower" seed. I treasure my self-sowing flowers.
