HAPPY CATURDAY!!!

HAPPY CATURDAY!!!

To Those of Us Born
1925 - 1970

~~~~~~~~~
TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s!!
First, we survived being born to mothers who may have smoked and/or drank
while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then, after that trauma, we were
put to sleep on our tummies
in baby cribs covered
with bright colored lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets,
and, when we rode our bikes,
we had baseball caps,
not helmets, on our heads.
As infants and children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes..
Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle, and no one actually died from this.
We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And we weren't overweight.
WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day.
--And, we were OKAY..
We would spend hours building
our go-carts out of scraps
and then ride them down the hill,
only to find out we forgot the brakes.. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We did not have Play Stations, Nintendos and X-boxes. There were
no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
no video movies or DVDs,
no surround-sound or CDs,
no cell phones,
no personal computers,
no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut,
broke bones and teeth,
and there were no lawsuits
from those accidents..
We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, or just a bare hand, and no one would call child services to report abuse.
We ate worms, and mud pies
made from dirt, and
the worms did not live in us forever.
We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls, and
-although we were told it would happen- we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.
Little League had tryouts
and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn
to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers,
problem solvers, and inventors ever.
The past 50 to 85 years have seen an explosion of innovation and new ideas..
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of those born
between 1925-1970, CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.
While you are at it, forward it to your kids, so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?
St.Gaudens - 31st July
St.Gaudens - 31st July
View from the St.Gaudens campsite to the Pyrenees
29th July - 28 miles from Carcassonne to Castelnaudary
Woke up to find it pouring with rain. It was forecast to rain all day but at about 3pm it was fairly clear so I left, heading roughly towards Toulouse. Unfortunately, my rest day had turned my legs in to blocks of lead and I had no strength in them at all. Managed 28 miles somehow, which is good for half a day cycling and camped for only 4€ in Castelnaudary.
30th July - 36 miles from Castelnaudry to Auterive
My legs were starting to recover so I took it easy in the morning, cycling only 18 miles to Villefranche which is where I left the road to Toulouse, cutting across the valleys towards Pau. Unfortunately this meanta lot of hills so although my legs were feeling better the hills took it all out of me again and I only managed another 18 miles before camping in Auterive, almost directly south of Toulouse. Although this is possibly the cheapest campsite in France at only 3€80 (about Ł2.50) it is also one of the worst. They only seemed to have one plot left and this was covered in gravel. Not great for getting tent pegs into. Also, the whole site seemed less of a campsite and more of a trailer park. All the other pitches were permanent ones with caravans nailed to the ground and gardens carefully plotted around them. Most had satellite dishes and many had huge chimneys attached to their sides.
I had a nice dinner next to the river but getting to sleep was a problem with a road going past the campsite behind me, "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" opposite, a dinner party on one side of me and a guy who farted a lot on the other.
31st July - 54 miles from Auterive to St.Gaudens
At last my legs had fully recovered and despite some more hills in the morning I managed 29 miles on the way to Cazeres where I stopped for lunch. I was feeling so good that I stopped for only about half an hour and carried on with some fantastic views on the way as the Pyrenees came in to sight. After 25 more miles, I arrived in St. Gaudens and had some fantastic views over the valley and mountains from the campsite (which had grassy ground and was much quieter).
1st August - Rest day in St.Gaudens due to rain
Frustratingly, it was raining very heavily when I woke up and continued to rain for most of the day. So apart from a brief trip into town for food and a chat with a guy called Geoffrey who was doing some cycling touring, I stayed in my tent all day. Lying (there isn't room to sit) in a tent all day by yourself is very boring. At my lowest ebb, I was trying to work out whether France or England has the most supermarket chains because I had noticed that France has a lot of them. If you can think of any more do let me know - I'm sure I've left an obvious one or two off.
France: Leclerc, Intermarche, Spar, Lidl, Atac, Netto, Monoprix, Aldi, Casino, Leader Price, Super U, Shopi, Geant, Champion.
England: Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Co-Op, Safeway, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, Somerfield.
ELECTRA GLIDE IN MONO
A sleepy town with a quaint nostalgic feel from a bygone era springs into life come the summer months when hoards of tourists speaking in a myriad of foreign tongues and hailing from destinations all over this beautiful Earth invade like a plague of locusts.
The 2010 census recorded a population of 891 in La Conner, nestling in Skagit County, where you can get the best home cooked breakfast this side of the mountains, and the local Sheriff must have the quietest job for miles around. And the streets are filled with expensive automobiles and mammoth Harley Davidson Electra glides most every afternoon and evening as the dudes unwind peacefully with a cold one in the plethora of traditionally cool bars that pepper the main drag.
It's 1950 to me and those bikers look so damned cool, like James Dean or Marlon Brando himself stepping off the pegs and removing their trendy shades. Or maybe I'm in the seventies with 'Electroglide in Blue' the motion picture that first had my adolesecent flesh lusting after a motorcycle. My mind is in overdrive. Do I love the bones of this town..... I'd love to be member 892 of this population.
Washington man rides his bike more than 3,000 miles - at age 90
I was thinking about this story today that I wrote for The Romeo Observer back on October 9, 2002.....
Washington Township resident Henry Koehler turns 90 years old today and he won’t be celebrating by playing bingo or shuffleboard.
He will ride his bike nearly 20 miles around Stony Creek Metropark.
“I ride almost every day when the weather is good. I don’t ride in the rain or if it is too windy,” he said.
The fair weather bike riding days have added up to nearly 3,000 miles this year.
“I even ride in the winter as long as a path is shoveled,” he said.
Koehler began bike riding serious distances in 1987 at the tender age of 75 after his wife had died and he was looking for something to do.
“I’ve ridden some 50 mile rides. I used to ride 36 miles every other day before I moved to Washington,” he said.
Koehler has ridden anywhere from 2,530 miles to 5,225 miles a year with an average of 3,758 miles each year for the past 15 years.
He has pedaled his bike 56,383 miles or the equivalent of more than two times around the earth.
He measures his mileage with an electronic speedometer/odometer on his handlebars and records his yearly mileage in a little notebook
Koehler’s daily routine includes three laps around the lake at Stony Creek which totals around 18 miles.
The bike ride is followed by a stroll through the Washington Meijer store and a salad lunch in the cafeteria.
His speedometer also records his average speed which he reports is more than 12 mph but he said he has often traveled at a clip of more than 17 mph.
“I go pretty fast when I can,” he said.
If you want to join Koehler for a lap or two, don’t expect to find him riding on a one speed cruiser bike with wide handlebars, fenders and a big cushy seat.
He owns a modern racing style bike complete with 12 gears and skinny tires.
He wears a helmet and a bicycling jersey while he rides. His feet are strapped to the pedals with toe clips and straps just like a bike racer.
He restricts most of his riding to Stony Creek although he has ridden on organized bicycle tours and with bicycle clubs.
“I’d rather ride alone,” he says and winks. “They (other bike riders) are a little too slow for me.”
Koehler said that he has noticed himself slowing down a little the past few years.
“I used to ride a bike to keep ahead of father time. Now he’s got a bike, too, and he’s catching up with me,” he said.
He said that he rarely rides more than 20 miles a day now and that some of the hills in the park seem more difficult to ride over.
“I think some of the hills in the park are getting bigger,” he said.
He said that his hip joint has been deteriorating the past few years and bothers him occasionally while walking but never while bike riding.
Even with the hip complaint, he still walks at the same pace as someone one third his age and he rarely has the need to visit the doctor.
Koehler was never athletic during his adult years and spent 46 years working as a pattern maker for automotive industry.
“When I was in school I did do some high jumping and played soccer. When you’re a kid, you do a lot of running around,” he said.
Upon retirement, he cared for his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
He has been asked by several other occasional bike riders in the park if he ever gets bored doing laps at Stony Creek.
“I just take it easy and enjoy myself. There is always something that I haven’t seen before,” he said.
April 9 was a simply splendid day for my friend Longbowsnyper and I to make our first of many track bike visits to the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook, IL for 2011. Our new Notre Dame cycling suites and Casco Helmets helped us made it to our traditional half century mark in style. Longbowsnyper is with his Fuji Track Pro and I am holding onto my Cervelo T1.
Photographed by Jessica using my Olympus E-PL1 with a 14-150mm lens. I used Tiffen DFx re-lighting effect to add some additional light to our faces.
My Bicycle
My Bicycle
I've owned several bicycles since I first came here...
1. Three-speed black bicycle -- two flat tires. One of two bicycles I bought from the guy who lived in my apartment before. I parked it in the middle of Maebashi and got a ride home, then promptly forgot about it because I had...
2. A single-speed red bicycle. The second of two bicycles I bought from the guy who lived here before me. It didn't survive very long; a high school student careened into me and completely bent the front wheel, so I had to sell it and get...
3. Another single-speed red bicycle. It was used, so it was cheap. I got in the habit of not using the lock on the back wheel (all Japanese bikes have them) when I was at school -- I figured nobody would steal a bike at school. Well, one of the elementary kids apparently thought it would be a riot to take my key, so I ended up breaking off the lock... which led to me getting stopped by the police numerous times so they could check my registration and confirm that I hadn't stolen the bike. I also had a chain lock that I used, just for safety's sake... not that it helped. I went to Tokyo one day and came back at 1 in the morning to find it gone, so I bought...
4. This bike. Silver, three-speed, very nice, very expensive. All of my bicycles have had lights; the kind where you push a lever and it snaps against the wheel to make a light. Well, this one actually makes light without direct contact with the wheel. I'm not exactly sure how it works; there's either a flywheel or a magnet in the center of the wheel, and that powers the light when it's dark.
This was taken outside of a convenience store.
Bicycling
Bicycling
The family and I went for a ride to a local school grounds park on Saturday. It was good practice for Deborah who is still using training wheels. Bike riding is still very scary to her. Her mama never learned to ride a two-wheeler so we bought her a "trike" in 2006. The adventure ended in a rainy ride home, but was great fun for the whole family. This picture was taken on the riverwalk where the Richardson Highway crosses over the Chena River in Fairbanks, Alaska on 12 June 2010.
