Seligmann, Kurt (1900-1962) - 1946 Initiation, (Christie's New York, 1993) Oil on canvas; 71 x 91.4 cm. Kurt Seligmann was a Swiss-American Surrealist painter and engraver. Born in Basel he was the son of a successful Furniture Department store owner. After study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Geneva, and several unhappy years working in his father's business in Basel, Seligmann left for Paris where he looked up his old friends from Geneva, the sculptor Alberto Giacometti and the art critic Pierre Courthion. Through Giacometti he met Hans Arp and Jean Helion, who admired his sinister biomorphic paintings and invited him to join their group, Abstraction-Creation Art Non-Figuratif. In the mid-1930s his work began to take on a more baroque aspect, as he animated the prancing figures in his paintings and etchings with festoons of ribbons, drapery and heraldic paraphernalia. It was about this time (1935) that he married Arlette Paraf, a granddaughter of the founder of the Wildenstein Gallery. Together they traveled extensively, first around the world (a year-long honey-moon trip in 1936) and then to North America and British Columbia (1938). In 1937, Seligmann was formally accepted as a member of the Surrealist group in Paris by Andre Breton, who collected his work. At the outbreak of World War Seligmann was the first European Surrealist to arrive in New York, ostensibly for an exhibition of his work. Once there, he began a concerted effort to aid his Surrealist colleagues left behind in France and bring them to safety. Seligmann's art continued to evolve and really matured in the 1940s in the United States, where he did his best work. Beginning in 1940, he and Arlette lived at the Beaux Arts Building at 40th Street in New York, and later acquired a farm north of the city in the hamlet of Sugar Loaf, in Orange County. Seligmann befriended many American artists and became a close friend of the art historian Meyer Schapiro. With Schapiro as author, he produced in 1944 a limited edition set of six etchings illustrating the Myth of Oedipus, surely his masterpiece in this medium and one of the greatest works of Surrealist printmaking. As the Surrealists' expert on magic, he also wrote The History of Magic : The Mirror of Magic (Pantheon Books, 1948). Mythology and esoterica always informed the fascinating and turbulent imagery of his "dance macabre" paintings, and his work began to be exhibited widely and acquired by museums throughout the United States and Europe after the war. Seligmann taught for many years at various colleges around New York, particularly at Brooklyn College, from which he retired in 1958. The changing nature of the New York art world toward an embracement of Abstract Expressionism caused his work to be relegated to past history. Another Reason to Love Thrift Town. Last Friday I was looking around for nothing in particular, just like normal. I have to steer myself away from furniture. I let go of a slightly battered kidney table (needed to be refinished) and frankly, I won't have a room to stand in if I keep bringing furniture home. I passed on the $30 antique milk can because I'll be damned if I'm dragging that thing around the store for an hour. I don't need the $79 antique school desk (mine looks better and was only $50) and I do not need more books! So I've gotten into scarves. This one, in fact, still had the Saks tag on it. The price was cut off (someone probably got it as a gift) but still. I would have liked to see how much it cost because I picked it up for $4. I love you, Thrift Town. Don't ever leave me. Find it! Ok, while the table stack is cool for a display, can you point out why this picture is funny? (Hint, you might need to make it bigger to find it) First person to find it gets bragging rights.... The spectacular contrasts of the mirror-image persimmon wood panels and the white brass hardware make a bold, even wild, and joyful design that would have been conspicuous in the usually rather sedate interior of an upper-class Korean house. The plates behind the drawer handles are in the shape of a bat, a symbol of good luck and longevity. 1987.22.16 Les Cigognes d'Alsace: Lift Cage - The Museum of London 3 Japanese style panels, designed by Edgar Brandt in 1928 for Selfridges department store. Made from lacquer, iron, bronze and wood. Now in the newly opened Galleries of Modern London at the Museum of London. Another of these is displayed at the V&A and also Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. There's a very good picture of the V&A panel in their Essential Art Deco book. I wouldn't recommend going to see it at the V&A as it's in a cabinet with a piece of furniture infront. According to the NY Times the city of New York was receiving complaints from the United Nations about the shortage of office space and hotel accommodations on the mideast side and it was having thoughts about leaving the city. The city took action. In 1968 a joint agency was formed by the city, state and U.N. to develop a large scale extension of facilities across First Avenue from the U.N. The agency, the United Nations Development Corporation, acquired the land on the north side of 44th Street at 1st Avenue, essentially across the street from the U.N. headquarters. The United Nations Development Corporation contracted with the architecture firm Roche-Dinkeloo. Kevin Roche acted as the principal designer for the firm while John Dinkeloo provided expertise in construction and technology. In the 60s and 70s they created stimulating examples of civic and corporate architecture. Later in the early 1990's they designed the 56-story Morgan Bank in the financial district. The plan emerged for a four building complex of 40-story towers. The first building -- a combined office, apartment and hotel tower was completed in 1976. The height of the tower was curtailed to 39-stories as it could not exceed height of the Secretariat Building of the U.N. Contradictorily - in 2000 Donald Trump built The Trump World Tower at United Nations Plaza three blocks to the north and was allowed to go 72 floors. Known as One UN Plaza, it was completed with office space to the 26th floor and 247 hotel rooms on floors 27-39. On the 27th floor a health club with its glass-walled swimming pool was built. On the 39th floor is the only hotel tennis court available in Manhattan. The 2nd phase known as Two UN Plaza was a mixed use office and hotel building. It was completed in 1983. It contained another 180 hotel rooms. The exterior of the two buildings is uncompromisingly uniform in composition, being made of rectangular green-tinted glass plates tied together with narrow aluminum bands. The facade grid consists of floor-high elements of mirror windows -- the first used in NYC -- with four windows forming one element. When the hotel opened in 1977 it was known as the United Nations Plaza Hotel - and in small print - (a United Nations Development Corporation project, managed by Hyatt International Corporation) In the 1980s Hyatt added the hotel to its new Park Hyatt brand and altered the hotel's name to U.N. Plaza Hotel-Park Hyatt – New York, NY. Rakesh Sarna, the Chief Operating Officer for Hyatt International Operations, served as the hotel's general manager in the early 80's. In 1997 the NY Times reported that Mayor Rudy Giuliani determined it was time for the city to sell off assets -particulary those that put the city in the role of landlord. He felt the city should not be in the hotel business and thought there was a growing demand by investors for New York City hotels. J.P. Morgan, the city's financial advisor, circulated the prospectus spelling out the terms of the hotel sale to large international hotel concerns, including Hyatt International which held the management contract to operate the hotel. The hotel portions of the two buildings had a complex ownership structure involving the city and the United Nations Development Corporation which complicated the sale. The hotel quickly sold in 1997 ending the city's 21 year tenure in the hotel business. It was thought the city made out like a bandit receiving $102 million from Hong Kong-based Regal Hotels International. The $238,000 price per key for each of the 428 rooms was much more then earlier city estimates of a price range of $40 million to $85 million. The hotel was rebranded to the Regal UN Plaza. During the preceding 10 years New York City's share of the hotel's profits, rent payments and property taxes averaged $2.48 million. By shifting the United Nations Plaza Hotel's ownership from public to private hands the city expected to receive annual city taxes of $6 million, which could increase to $9 million by the year 2010. On July 28, 1997 Mayor Rudolph Giuliani "handed-over" the city-owned 427-room U.N. Plaza Hotel to Hong Kong-based Regal Hotels International - the final step of the $102 million purchase. The mayor was joined at the ceremony by Daniel Bong, Deputy Chairman of Regal Hotels International Holdings LTD, Douglas Pasquale, President and CEO of Regal Hotels and the hotel's General Manager Richard Wilhelm. The inspector and I almost missed the place, which was, of course, the architect's original intention. I stroked the cracked screen of my vintage iPhone. "The GPS coordinates of this structure seem to have been deliberately mis-allocated." "Typical," sniffed the inspector. I knew the place from photos, but not from recent ones. The sturdy poles were moss-eaten, their guywires festooned with vines, and the trees on the site had grown huge. Given that the plastic mesh was integrated into the forest, the web-house was all parabolic arcs and delirious sagging. Much-stained by years of fallen foliage, the structure had the spotty look of forest camou. An army could have marched by it and never seen a thing. The inspector hefted her tricorder. "Aging plastics tend to offgas," she sniffed. Locating the entrance with difficulty, we entered the dense fabric maze. The visual effect was literally indescribable, a fact I attributed to the stark exhaustion of conventional architectural rhetoric. "Visionary interventions of this sort were sadly rare during the culturally retrograde epoch of the War on Terror." The inspector's face soured. English was not her first language. If you don't know what it is, it's the 38mm Diana F+ (plastic toy camera) lens with an adaptor for an SLR. The plastic in the lens gives things a sort of dreamy look. I have to manually meter and focus this lens on my Nikon D40. On today's walk I left my other lenses at home so I was forced to use the new one. It's interesting -- the shots I thought would work well with it (tacky lawn furniture sorts of shots) didn't work as well for me as I expected. I preferred these shots of snow and reflections. It's going to take me a while to figure this out. Yesterday we had a big storm. Today was supposed to be the same, but it rained and melted all day. We're walking into town here, on our way to the library. That's my 13-year-old daughter. Standing Desk and Dual Monitors. Ever since seeing standing desks on Lifehacker.com i've always thought what a beautifully simple idea. With so many benefits of health, fitness, time saving and minimalist living soon after i brought my own place i set about installing my own. Recently finished off with the black desk top (?13 Ikea) I absolutely love it. I fidget and move about more whilst at the PC which can only be good, i get done what i need to with less procrastinating and my aimless viewing of YouTube has at least halved. The Dual monitors was something I set up years ago when i used to play the stock market, but still couldn't do with out. The Areca Palms are there for their amazing air cleaning abilities. Standing Desk After reading several posts on Lifehacker about the benefits of switching to a standing set-up and I decided to give it a shot. I didn't want to spend a lot of time and money on an experiment so I opted for an easily reversible and cheap(!) option; bed risers! The desk now sits on 5.25inch bed risers from Walmart that cost me $5.99. Cheap, effective and reversible! I'm pretty happy with the setup so far and can honestly say I enjoy the experiment so far. Iiving room Our living room is pretty much put together now. We have more details to address, but this is as good as it gets for now. It feels wonderful. We'll be holding off on remodel work for about a year. THAT will change everything about this space when it happens. For now, this it. Per request, a little about the room and it's components as far as 'styling' goes. I think that the most important part for me when I first started looking at this room, was what the color pallet should be. I wanted light and bright with out being cold. While I like the direction we're going here, I still feel like its missing some accent pieces, but that will come with time. The wall colors are from the Devine Paint collection. Devine Almond for the outer walls and Devine Crunch for the interior portions. They change with the light and time of day. I love how soft they look and midday sun makes this space heaven. We like modern/contemporary styling, but we're also a bit traditional. The biggest uplift for this room was the hardwoods under all that carpet. They are very warm and worn, not perfect. With the exception of the storage pieces here behind the sectional, all other pieces here were in our previous home. All acquired from Ikea and Target. The prints are from my photos. I would like to eventually have separates for furniture here and move the sectional down to the other living space in the basement. As for leather and dogs, we found it way easier to maintain. We do keep it covered with blankets when we're gone. This space needs more textile and we are looking for drapes and throw pillows to start. More wall art is needed as well. Stickley Bros. reproduction rocker The craigslist listing said this came from Macy's; I'm sure that's right, though the only Stickley-style chair Macy's lists for sale now is a Morris chair (I would like a Morris chair too). It's exactly the match to a Stickley brothers chair in a repro catalog I have (and quite similar, as much of L & JG's furniture was, to a design sold by big brother Gustav). More than likely made by the current incarnation of Stickley?, which has a line of the old Arts & Crafts styles. Really changed the whole character of the massively unfinished room when I brought it in, after finding a cab big enough to put it in the trunk. The oil stains aren't as apparent in real life as they are in the flash (though the leather's sustained a little more, Phoebe-separation-anxiety wear since this shot). There's a tiny bit of white paint transfer on the edges from bringing it down from the seller's too-tight stairwell. But. $100. (And $40 for cab + tip home.) Even for reproduction that's not a bad price. The "boys" sleeping porch Each family member bedroom (3) has a sleeping porch. The other 2 bedrooms, for visitors or sick family members, had no porches. The live in help used rooms we weren't shown but we saw the Stickley furniture the staff were forced to use, on a porch off the massive kitchen.
