Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster and British Airways Concord

Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster and British Airways Concord

The Plane:

The Aerospatiale-BAC Concorde was a turbojet-powered supersonic passenger airliner, a supersonic transport (SST). It was a product of an Anglo-French government treaty, combining the manufacturing efforts of Aerospatiale and the British Aircraft Corporation. First flown in 1969, Concorde entered service in 1976 and continued commercial flights for 27 years.

Among other destinations, Concorde flew regular transatlantic flights from London Heathrow (British Airways) and Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (Air France) to New York JFK, profitably flying these routes at record speeds, in less than half the time of other airliners.

With only 20 aircraft built, their development represented a substantial economic loss, in addition to which Air France and British Airways were subsidised by their governments to buy them. As a result of the type’s only crash on 25 July 2000 and other factors, its retirement flight was on 26 November 2003.

Concorde's name reflects the development agreement between the United Kingdom and France. In the UK, any or all of the type—unusual for an aircraft—are known simply as "Concorde". The aircraft is regarded by many as an aviation icon.[4]

The Car:

The Mercedes-Benz 300SL was introduced in 1954 as a two-seat, closed sports car with distinctive gull-wing doors. Later it was offered as an open roadster. It was the fastest production car of its day.

Built by Daimler-Benz AG and internally numbered W198, the fuel-injected road version was based (somewhat loosely) on the company's highly successful competition-only sports car of 1952, the somewhat less powerful carbureted Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W194).

The road model was suggested by Max Hoffman. Being intended for customers in the booming post-war American market it was introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show, unlike previous models introduced at either the Frankfurt or Geneva shows. In Mercedes-Benz fashion, the "300" referred to the engine's three litre cylinder displacement. The "SL" stood for "Sport Leicht" (Sport Light).

The 300SL was best known for both its distinctive gull wing doors and being the first-ever four-stroke car equipped with a Gasoline direct injection. The gull wing version was available from March 1955 to 1957. Production of the roadster ended in 1963 with the introduction of the 230SL.

Bristol Setting Air Standards

Bristol Setting Air Standards

January 2005 Once again, Bristol has a hand in helping to create an aircraft that sets new standards. From the Box Kite to the Brabazon and from the Britannia to Concorde, planes that left their mark on the world of aviation have relied on Bristol expertise. And so it is with the latest in that line, the giant Airbus A380.

Even before she has made her first flight, this aircraft has redefined air travel, in the numbers of people she will carry, the facilities aboard and in her sheer size. She is one of those machines which will turn heads. She may not have the originality of the Box Kite, the propeller-driven grace of the mighty Brabazon or, for certain, the revolutionary look of Concorde. But she will stand out from the crowd thanks to her sheer size and she will usher in a new era of plane travel.

Just like the Brabazon and Concorde, people will hold their breath on the day this mighty aircraft takes to the skies for her maiden flight. That is expected to be towards the end of March although no date has yet been confirmed. We can already anticipate the excitement and the expectation of that day and the anxiety.

For no matter how many thousands of hours have been spent predicting her performance using computers, there is no substitute for the acid test of opening her throttles and attempting a take-off.

But when that day comes we are confident she will have a successful maiden flight and the name of Bristol will be written into another chapter of aviation history. It will be an immensely proud event for all the 1,000 people who work on the wings, landing gear and fuel systems at Filton.

And perhaps it will give us all the chance to pause and to marvel at how far aviation has come since the first powered flight more than a hundred years ago. 'We wish her well'.

UNHCR News Story: Congolese teenager finds life tough in Kenya, but hangs on to his dreams

Congolese teenager finds life tough in Kenya, but hangs on to his dreams

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 15 (UNHCR) – Fifteen-year-old Congolese refugee John* does not ask for much. The teenager says that all he wants is a mattress and the chance to learn English, though he clearly thinks a lot about his missing siblings and his parents, who were slain last year in volatile North Kivu province.

There are a lot of challenges for this unaccompanied minor, but at least he has a roof over his head thanks to a fortuitous meeting with a sympathetic fellow refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Jeanette comes from the same tribe and lives with her family of seven in Nairobi's Soweto slum.

With UNHCR's help, John has also applied for asylum in Kenya. He is one of around 50,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers in Nairobi, including 951 unaccompanied minors, who have escaped from conflict in North Kivu. Many more are believed not to have registered with the authorities.

"Life in Kenya is hard. There is no job, no school and no friends for me here," sighed John, who is facing the kinds of problems that millions of other refugees live with in urban environments. More than half of the 10.5 million refugees of concern to UNHCR live in towns and cities, and more and more of them are women, children and older people with special needs.

The UN refugee agency has responded to this changing pattern by adopting a new policy that emphasizes the obligation of UNHCR and host states to protect the urban refugees and respect their status. Meanwhile, a recently released report by the International Rescue Committee and the Overseas Development Institute, a British think tank, looks specifically at the challenges faced by UNHCR and its partners in helping urban refugees in Nairobi.

In North Kivu, John's family made a living as cattle herders, but, as he explained, "We had to move around a lot because of the war, and I only had the chance to go to school for one year." In June last year, armed assailants brought the conflict to his village near the town of Betembo and John had to flee for his life. "I have two younger sisters and two brothers, but I don't know if any of them are alive," he said, adding: "All I know for sure is that my mother and father are dead."

Left on his own, the boy had to grow up very quickly. Fearing it was too dangerous for John to remain hidden in North Kivu, another cattle herder who knew his family helped John to cross the Ugandan border. From there, he was taken to Nairobi in the back of a lorry.

In large cities such as Nairobi, some refugees have trouble finding their way to UNHCR for the support they need. But John was lucky, a few days after reaching the Kenyan capital he met Jeanette in a downtown market. "When I heard her speaking my language, I approached her," John recalled. She offered to let him stay in the spartan, one-room home she shared with her family of seven.

John knows that he has been fortunate, but he also realizes that things could change. "I don't know how long I can stay here," he said, adding: "There is very little space and not enough money to feed us all."

The room, where eight people live, eat and sleep, is roughly 10 square metres. It has a light bulb hanging from the ceiling, but this does not work because the electricity bill has not been paid. There is also a single mattress behind a curtain, a small bench and a gas-fuelled camping cooker in a corner. "I spend most days doing as much I can to help Jeanette, fetching water and taking care of the small children," John explained.

Although, he gets depressed if he thinks about his situation, John does not want to stay in a camp, where he could benefit from comprehensive assistance, including access to education, health care and food. "I'm afraid the people who killed my parents will be hiding in the camps, waiting to kill me too. At least I feel safer here in Nairobi; there aren't so many Congolese here," he said. "As long as I can stay here, life is okay."

But John, and others like him, do need help and UNHCR's new policy tries to address this. It is more challenging for the agency and its partners to provide services and monitor the needs of refugees in cities compared to those living in camps.

Meanwhile, John still has his wish list. "A mattress to sleep on! And I want to study English. Get a small car, maybe, and become a driver. That's my dream."

He has no wish to go back to North Kivu, where the violence has caused more than 1 million people to flee their homes in recent years, with most seeking shelter in other parts of the province, including sites run by UNHCR.

The Grey Currawong (Strepera versicolor) is a large passerine bird native to southern Australia and Tasmania. One of three currawong species in the genus Strepera, it is closely related to the butcherbirds and Australian Magpie of the family Artamidae. It is a large crow-like bird, around 48 cm (19 in) long on average, with yellow irises, and a heavy bill, and dark plumage with white undertail and wing patches. The male and female are similar in appearance. Six subspecies are recognised and are distinguished by overall plumage colour, which ranges from slate-grey for the nominate from New South Wales and eastern Victoria and subspecies plumbea from Western Australia, to sooty black for the Clinking Currawong of Tasmania and subspecies halmaturina from Kangaroo Island. All Grey Currawongs have a loud distinctive ringing or clinking call.

Within its range, the Grey Currawong is generally sedentary, although it is a winter visitor in the southeastern corner of Australia. Comparatively little studied, much of its behaviour and habits is poorly known. Omnivorous, it has a diet that includes a variety of berries, invertebrates, and small vertebrates. Less arboreal than the Pied Currawong, the Grey Currawong spends more time foraging on the ground. It builds nests high in trees, which has limited the study of its breeding habits. Unlike its more common relative, it has adapted poorly to human impact and has declined in much of its range. The habitat includes all kinds of forested areas as well as scrubland in dryer parts of the country.

NIEUPORT 28C.1

NIEUPORT 28C.1

The notable French aircraft manufacturer Societe Anonyme des Establissements Nieuport was formed in 1909 and rose to prominence before World War I with a series of elegant monoplane designs. The namesakes of the company, Edouard de Nieport and his brother Charles, were both killed in flying accidents before the war. (The spelling of the company name was a slight variation of the brothers' surname.) The talented designer Gustave Delage joined the firm in 1914 and was responsible for the highly successful war-time line of sesquiplane V-strut single-seat scouts, the most famous of which were the Nieuport 11 and the Nieuport 17.

The Nieuport 28C.1 was developed in mid-1917 and was the first biplane fighter design produced by Nieuport that had relatively equal-chord upper and lower wings. In an attempt to compete with the superior performance of the Spad VII and the recently introduced Spad XIII, Nieuport explored the use of a more powerful motor than the types employed in the sesquiplane series. The availability of a more powerful, and heavier, 160-horsepower Gnome rotary engine prompted the decision to increase the surface area of the lower wing to compensate for the greater weight of the new power plant, hence eliminating the typical Nieuport sesquiplane V-strut configuration.

In early 1918, the French Air Service rejected the new Nieuport design as a front-line fighter in favor of the sturdier, more advanced Spad XIII. However, the Nieuport 28 found a place with the newly arriving American squadrons. Having no suitable fighter design of its own, the United States adopted the Nieuport 28 as a stop-gap measure before the much-in-demand Spad XIIIs could be made available from the French. The Nieuport 28 performed creditably as the first operational pursuit aircraft in the fledgling U.S. Air Service of the American Expeditionary Force. Thus, the primary significance of the Nieuport 28 for the national aeronautical collection is that it was the first fighter aircraft to serve with an American fighter unit under American command and in support of U.S. troops. It was also first type to score an aerial victory with an American unit. On April 14, 1918, Lieutenants Alan Winslow and Douglas Campbell of the 94th Aero Squadron, both piloting a Nieuport 28, each downed an enemy aircraft in a fight that took place directly over their home airfield at Gengoult.

The Nieuport 28 made its mark in aviation history after World War I as well. Of the 297 total Nieuport 28 fighters procured by the United States from the French government during World War I, 88 were returned to the United States after the war. Twelve Nieuports, along with examples of several other European types brought back, were used by the U.S. Navy from 1919 to 1921 for shipboard launching trials. Many, often harrowing, launches were undertaken. Some of the twelve Navy Nieuport 28s were destroyed in accidents. The surviving aircraft, worn out beyond repair, were surplused after the trials. The other seventy-six Nieuport 28s that were brought back to the United States after the war were operated by the U.S. Army at various bases and airfields in the 1920s, such as McCook, Mitchel, and Bolling Fields.

The Nieuports that survived their post-war U.S. military service found their way into various private hands. Several were modified for air racing, having their wings clipped, adapting non-standard interplane struts, and other changes. A number found their way into Hollywood movies, most notably in the famous Dawn Patrol films of 1930 and 1938. Still others became privately-owned airplanes flying in various sporting and commercial capacities. The specific history of these uses remains quite sketchy.

In short, although aesthetically pleasing and by all reports delightful to fly, the Nieuport 28 type gained fame more for simply being available rather than for any inherently superior performance or design qualities. Nevertheless, in American aviation history, the Nieuport 28 holds a number of important firsts and was used in several significant ways. Because of its varied and interesting role in U.S. aviation history, this aircraft has a richly deserved place in the NASM collection.

The museum's Nieuport 28 has a complex and confusing history. It was acquired in 1986 from Cole Palen, founder and operator of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. He flew the aircraft regularly in his air shows from 1958 to 1972. Immediately before its transfer to NASM, the airplane was on loan from Palen to the Intrepid Sea/Air/Space Museum in New York.

Upon close inspection, it became clear that the NASM aircraft is a composite of several different Nieuport 28s. The various components had been owned by a number of different people and used in a variety of capacities over a long period of time. As a result, the pieces have been shuffled around a lot and re-built many times. A large number of parts were not original and in many cases the replacement parts were not prepared to original specifi

Pushkar

Pushkar

Pushkar, the picturesque pilgrim city, nestles amidst the majestic Aravalis hills. It is just 11 kms from Ajmer and Pushkar is quite interesting, as the serpentine road winds through the Nag Pahar (Snake Hill), which forms a natural barrier between Ajmer and Pushkar. The town is considered to be on of the most sacred pilgrimage for Hindus and is referred as 'Tirth Raj' or the 'King of pilgrim centres'. It is believed that a pilgrimage is rendered incomplete without a holy dip in the sacred waters of Pushkar.
Pushkar is associated with several myths and legends. According to 'Padam Puran', the Hindu religious text, Lord Brahma was in search of a suitable place for a Vedic Yagna. While contemplating, a lotus fell down from his hand on the earth and water spurted from three places, one of them was Pushkar and Brahma decided to perform his yagna over here. The temple town has withstood the test of time, and has been a mute witness to the procession of history from the time of Rama, the hero of the earliest Hindu epic Ramayana, to Fa-Hien's accounts of Pushkar in 14th century Ad., and to the time of Muslim invasion.
The holy land is dotted with over 400 sacred shrines of immense religious importance, the most important being the temple of Lord Brahma, which is only one of its kind in the country. The beautiful Pushkar lake, surrounded b bathing ghats is another most important site of the town.
The sleepy town comes to life during the annual Pushkar fair held on Kartik Purnima. It has emerged as a major tourist attraction of the region, as tourist from all parts of the world gather here for the colourful fair.

Jagat Pita Shri Brahma Mandir
The unique shrine of Lord Brahma, the 'Lord of Creation' is the most important attraction of the town. It is the only existing temple of Lord Brahma in the country. The 14th century shrine set on a high plinth is marked by a red spire. It is approached by marble steps and over the main entrance is a beautiful statue of a 'Hans' or swan, the celestial carrier of Lord Brahma.
The sanctum sanctorum or the garbha griha enshrines a four faced image of Lord Brahma, known as Chaumurti. Nearby is a small image of milkmaid Gayatri. The sanctuary has silver doors inside a carved marble gate way. Steps in the corner lead to a small cave dedicated to Lord Shiva. A beautifully carved silver turtle is set on the floor in front of the garbha griha. The marble floor around the silver coins. Silver coins bearing the names of the donor's are also set in the temple walls.
The temple walls are also adorned with graceful peacocks, the celestial vehicle of Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom and consort of Lord Brahma.

Warah Temple
The sacred shrine along with the famous Brahma temple are the two most important temples of the town. The shrine is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Warah, the wild boar. It is said to be built by Chauhan King Anaji (1123-1150), but was destroyed by Muhammad Ghuri, after his victory over Ajmer. It was renovated in 1806, by Gokul Chand Parikh, a Scindia minister.

Apteshwar Mahadeo Temple
The 11th century shrine of Lord Shiva is yet another important temple of the town.

Savitri Temple
This shrine of Lord Brahma's first wife is set on the hill behind the Brahma temple. The temple is approached by a long flight of steps and affords a birds eye view of the lake and surroundings areas. Temple of Rahgji or Shri Vaikunthnath ji.
This magnificent shrine is noted for its south Indian style of architecture. It has a high towering 'Gopuram' (gateway). Which is typical of southern Indian temples.
Other important temples of Pushkar are-Baiji ka Mandir and Man Mandir etc.

Pushkar Lake
The pious Pushkar lake amid Aravalli hills is dipped in mythological legends and is said to be created by the falling of louts petal from the hand of Lord Brahma. The lake is considered to be as old as the creation and is one of the sacred 'Panch Sarovar' or Five Lakes of Hindu mythology. The other four are Man Sarovar, Narayan Sarovar Bindu Sarovar and Pampa Sarovar. It is considered to be one of the most sacred spots for Hindus and a dip in the waters of the lake on Kartik Poornima, is equivalent to performing yagnas for several hundred years. A dip in the water of the lake washes away the sins of the devotees.
There are 52 bathing ghats around the lake, the water around each of them is said to possess special powers. The Naga Kund is believed to give fertility, Roop Tirth gives beauty and charm, Kapil Vyapi Kund water helps in curing leprosy and a dip in

Swype Keyboard

An alternative to the Android virtual keyboard, the Swype virtual keyboard allows you to input text by swiping the finger with one continuous finger or stylus motion across the screen keyboard. Based on testing, speed and accuracy are equal to or better than the traditional keyboard-tapping method. You can activate the Swype keyboard by pressing and holding in a text field, wait for popup to appear, click Input Method, and then select Swype.
In the image to the left, the word "quick" was generated from tracing the path shown above in a fraction of a second, by roughly aiming to pass through the letters of the word. A key advantage to Swype is that there is no need to be very accurate, enabling very rapid text entry.

BELL UH-1H IROQUOIS "HUEY" SMOKEY III

BELL UH-1H IROQUOIS

What the jeep was to Americans during World War II, so was the Huey to those who fought in Vietnam. All branches of the U. S. military operated them and they ranged to every corner of South Vietnam and into Cambodia and Laos. The term 'Huey' originated in the U. S. Army as a derivative of the original designation HU-1A - Helicopter, Utility, Model 1A. For a time, the Huey was one of the most recognizable aircraft in history. People knew it not just on sight but by sound, too. They usually heard the unmistakable whop-whop-whop of the main rotor blade long before they saw a Huey.

The concept for this aircraft sprang from the cold, muddy battlefields of the Korean War, where the original MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) helicopter, the Bell 47, recovered thousands of wounded soldiers and delivered them straight to critical care units. In 1954 the U. S. Army launched a design competition for a new medical evacuation (medevac) helicopter. The Army specifications described an aircraft that weighed 3,600 kg (8,000 lb), fully loaded. It could carry a payload of 360 kg (800 lb) a distance of at least 365 km (227 miles) and cruise at 184 kph (114 mph). The helicopter could climb to a service ceiling of 1,824 m (6,000 ft).

Bell Helicopter Corporation enjoyed several advantages in competing for this contract. The Army held the company in high regard, based on the excellent service rendered by the piston engine-powered Bell 47 during the Korean War. Bell was already flying an H-13D equipped with a French-designed, American-made, Continental XT-51 gas turbine engine. Bell called this modified H-13D test aircraft the Bell Model 201 but the Army gave it the designation XH-13F. The turbine engine represented a revolutionary step in the development of helicopters, and the Army saw it as a critical component in the new medevac helicopter design. Compared to the reciprocating piston engine, the turbine was lighter, smoother, easier to maintain, and much more reliable.

Testing the H-13D gave Bell the confidence to incorporate a turbine engine in the Army's new transport helicopter design. At about the same time, the Lycoming Company was developing the XT-53 engine with Army backing. Lycoming had not designed this engine for a specific application but Bell engineers saw great potential in this power plant. They joined with Lycoming to develop the XT-53 to Bell Helicopter specifications, and this new engine eventually powered the prototype Huey. The Army designated this prototype the XH-40 and the first one flew on October 22, 1956. It performed so well that Bell earned a contract to produce three more prototypes in February 1955. Tests on these helicopters (Bell Model 204) were successful and Bell and the Army signed a contract to build 200 production medevac versions plus 100 outfitted as instrument trainers to teach pilots to fly at night and in bad weather.

Flight tests revealed no significant problems with the prototypes and production began in September 1958 when the first of 182 Model 204s rolled off the assembly line. The new aircraft was designated HU-1A (hence the nickname 'Huey') and officially christened the Iroquois, in keeping with the Army tradition of naming helicopters after American Indian tribes. In 1962 the Army aircraft designation system changed and the HU-1 became the UH-1, but the Huey nickname remained.

In 1960 representatives from Bell Helicopter met with U. S. Army General Hamilton Howze. The general was promoting the idea of moving Army infantry around the battlefield using helicopters rather than trucks. United States Marines of the Marine Helicopter Squadron HMX-1 first conceived of and tested the concept of moving troops with helicopters in 1948 along the coast of North Carolina.

In 1962 General Howze was put in charge of a board formed to consider and test new tactical theories. During these trials, Howze used Hueys to demonstrate the ease of moving a company of infantry (about 100 soldiers) across a river or over rough terrain. He argued that the Army's two airborne divisions - the 82nd and the 101st - needed this capability because both units were designed to move quickly to counter battlefield threats. Based on his recommendations, the Army created the 11th Air Assault Division to test Howze's theories. The results led the Army to fundamentally change the way it rode into battle and the service introduced a new type of warfare several years later on the other side of the world - Vietnam.

The first Hueys to operate in Vietnam were medevac HU-1As that arrived in April 1962, before the United States became officially involved in the conflict. These Hueys supported the South Vietnamese Army, but American crews flew them. In October, the first armed Hueys, equipped with 2.75-inch rockets and .30 caliber machine guns, began flying in Vietnam. The main role of these Huey 'gunships' was to escort Army and Marine transport helicopters. By the end of 1964, the Army was flying more than 300

Kingdom of Bhutan / ?????????? /Brug rGyal-Khab / Dru Gäkhap / Reino do Butăo

is a landlocked nation in South Asia, located at the eastern end of the Himalaya Mountains and bordered to the south, east and west by the Republic of India and to the north by China. Bhutan was separated from the nearby state of Nepal to the west by the Indian state of Sikkim, and from Bangladesh to the south by West Bengal. The Bhutanese called their country Druk Yul (Dzongkha: ?????????? 'drug yul) which means "Land of the Thunder Dragon".

Bhutan used to be one of the most isolated nations in the world. Developments including direct international flights, the Internet, mobile phone networks, and cable television have increasingly modernized the urban areas of the country. Bhutan balanced modernization with its ancient culture and traditions under the guiding philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH). Rampant destruction of the environment has been avoided. The government takes great measures to preserve the nation's traditional culture, identity and the environment. In 2006, Business Week magazine rated Bhutan the happiest country in Asia and the eighth-happiest in the world, citing a global survey conducted by the University of Leicester in 2006 called the "World Map of Happiness".

Bhutan's landscape ranges from subtropical plains in the south to the Himalayan heights in the north, with some peaks exceeding 7,000 metres (23,000 ft). The state religion is Vajrayana Buddhism, and the population of 691,141 is predominantly Buddhist, with Hinduism being the second-largest religion. The capital and largest city is Thimphu. After centuries of direct monarchic rule, Bhutan held its first democratic elections in March 2008. Among other international associations, Bhutan is a member of the United Nations and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The total area of the country is currently 38,394 square kilometres (14,824 sq mi)

Name
"Bhutan" may be derived from the Sanskrit word Bhu-Utthan (??-???????; highlands). In another theory of Sanskritisation, Bho?a-anta (???-????) means "At the end of Tibet", as Bhutan is immediately to Tibet's south.

Historically Bhutan was known by many names, such as Lho Mon (southern land of darkness), Lho Tsendenjong (southern land of the Tsenden cypress), Lhomen Khazhi (southern land of four approaches) and Lho Men Jong (southern land of medicinal herbs).

History
Stone tools, weapons, elephants, and remnants of large stone structures provide evidence that Bhutan was inhabited as early as 2000 BC, although there are no existing records from that time. Historians have theorized that the state of Lhomon (literally, "southern darkness", a reference to the indigenous Mon religion), or Monyul ("Dark Land", a reference to the Monpa, the aboriginal peoples of Bhutan) may have existed between 500 BC and AD 600. The names Lhomon Tsendenjong (Sandalwood Country), and Lhomon Khashi, or Southern Mon (country of four approaches), have been found in ancient Bhutanese and Tibetan chronicles.
The earliest transcribed event in Bhutan was the passage of the Buddhist saint Padma Sambhava (also known as Guru Rinpoche) in 747. Bhutan's early history is unclear, because most of the records were destroyed after fire ravaged the ancient capital, Punakha, in 1827. By the 10th century, Bhutan's political development was heavily influenced by its religious history. Various sub-sects of Buddhism emerged which were patronized by the various Mongol warlords. After the decline of the Mongols in the 14th century, these sub-sects vied with each other for supremacy in the political and religious landscape, eventually leading to the ascendancy of the Drukpa sub-sect by the 16th century.

Until the early 17th century, Bhutan existed as a patchwork of minor warring fiefdoms, when the area was unified by the Tibetan lama and military leader Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal who fled religious persecution in Tibet. To defend the country against intermittent Tibetan forays, Namgyal built a network of impregnable dzong (fortresses), and promulgated a code of law that helped to bring local lords under centralized control. Many such dzong still exist and are active centers of religion and district administration. Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal also brought Nepalese people from Gorkha when Ram Shah was King of Gorkha. He brought 42 Nepalese families under the leadership of Bishnu Thapa Magar in 1616. Circa 1627, Portuguese Jesuit Estevao Cacella and another priest were the first recorded Europeans to visit Bhutan on their way to Tibet. They met with Ngawang Namgyal, presented him with firearms, gunpowder and a telescope, and offered him their services in the war against Tibet, but the Shabdrung declined the offer. After a stay of nearly eight months Cacella wrote a long letter from the Chagri Monastery reporting on his travels. This is a rare extant report of the Shabdrung.

After Namgyal's death in 1651, Bhutan fell into civil war. Taking advanta

He soon finds himself snared in the literal prison of Coventry-and in a cell of his own making. He watches as his father, Mac, a retired iron-willed, old-school chain gang guard, descends into madness. And when Calvin unwittingly traffics in contraband on the prison yard, he begins to realize that the prison is on the verge of disintegration from within.

Escape from the Land of Snows: The Young Dalai Lama's Harrowing Flight to Freedom and the Making of a Spiritual Hero

Escape from the Land of Snows: The Young Dalai Lama's Harrowing Flight to Freedom and the Making of a Spiritual Hero

On the evening of March 17, 1959, as the people of Tibet braced for a violent power grab by Chinese occupiers—one that would forever wipe out any vestige of national sovereignty—the twenty-four-year-old Dalai Lama, Tibet’s political and spiritual leader, contemplated the impossible. The task before him was immense: to slip past a cordon of crack Chinese troops ringing his summer palace and, with an escort of 300, journey across the highest terrain in the world and over treacherous Himalayan passes to freedom—one step ahead of pursuing Chinese soldiers.

Mao Zedung, China’s ruthless Communist dictator, had pinned his hopes for total Tibetan submission on controlling the impressionable Dalai Lama. So beloved was the young ruler—so identified with his country’s essence—that for him to escape might mean perpetual resistance from a population unwilling to tolerate an increasingly brutal occupation. The Dalai Lama’s minders sent word to the Tibetan rebels and CIA-trained guerrillas who waited on the route: His Holiness must escape—at all costs.

In many ways, the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was unprepared for the epic journey awaiting him. Twenty-two years earlier, government search parties, guided by prophecies and omens, had arrived at the boy’s humble peasant home and subjected the two-year-old to a series of tests. After being declared the reincarnation of Tibet’s previous ruler, the boy was brought to Lhasa to learn the secrets of Buddhism and the ways of ultimate power. Forced in the ensuing two decades to cope with aching loneliness and often stifling ritual—and compelled to suppress his mischievous personality—Gyatso eventually proved himself a capable leader. But no previous Dalai Lama had ever taken on a million Communist Chinese soldiers bent on stamping out Tibetan freedom.

To keep his country’s dream of independence alive by means of a government in exile, the young ruler would not only have to brave battalions of enemy soldiers and the whiteout conditions waiting on the slopes of the Himalayas’ highest peaks, he’d have to overcome a different type of blindness: the naivete intrinsic to his sheltered palace life and his position as leader of a people who considered violence deeply taboo.

His mind made up, the young Dalai Lama set off on his audacious journey to India while behind him a Chinese army rolled over Lhasa, its advance hunter patrols in fierce pursuit of the man they most coveted. The 14th’s escape was an act of daring and defiance that represented Tibet’s last hope, and so the world watched, transfixed, as the gentle monk’s journey unfolded.

Emotionally powerful and irresistibly page-turning, Escape from the Land of Snows is simultaneously a portrait of the inhabitants of a spiritual nation forced to take up arms in defense of their ideals, and the saga of an initially childlike ruler who at first wore his monk’s robes uncomfortably but was ultimately transformed by his escape into the towering figure the world knows today—a charismatic champion of free thinking and universal compassion.

Eric Swanson on Escape from the Land of Snows
Eric Swanson is co-author of the New York Times bestselling The Joy of Living and Joyful Wisdom.

Stephan Talty’s Escape from the Land of Snows gripped me from its opening image-–that of a lonely, frightened twenty-three year-old man pacing the gilded cage of a palace garden outside Lhasa--through its final, haunting scenes, which show the Tibetan capital fifty years after the uprising that compelled the young Dalai Lama to escape his homeland in the face of a brutal crackdown by Chinese government forces. This meticulously researched book weaves together strands from a wide array of sources to provide an extraordinarily vivid and compelling picture of a labyrinth of events-–from CIA schemes, to assassination attempts, to kidnapping plots, to the callous and calculating debates of Cold War politics, to shattering betrayals of Tibetan government figures–-swirling around a young man confronting a destiny for which no amount of spiritual or political training could prepare him.
While the outlines of the story are generally known, what fascinated me most was the immediacy that Talty brings to the telling. I felt I was right there, watching the emotional and spiritual transformation of a child plucked from obscurity to become an international icon. Who knew that the Dalai Lama had an early reputation for being headstrong and hot-tempered? That the “palace” where he lived during his early years was cold, drafty, and rat-infested? That discipline was enforced on him, not by a threat to his physical person, but by beatings his younger brother would receive? (The image of a whip hanging on a wall in his room is just one of many haunting details that stayed with me long past the final chapter, a vivid reminder that at an age when most of us are learning rudimentary social skills along with our ABC’s, the Dalai Lama was impressed with the real-life understanding that his least word or action would have consequences for other people). His innocence during his first meeting with Mao-–his willingness to believe the best about people-–is heart-wrenching, as are the excruciating betrayals and the heroic, against-all-odds choices of the bands of supporters and resistance fighters who lead him ultimately to understand that the only way to save his people is to leave them. The agony behind the Dalai Lama’s choice is palpable, unfolding moment by moment against a background of rumors, mysterious oracular pronouncements, and frustrated attempts to communicate with rebel forces and foreign governments.
On every page I could feel the tension rising as the citizens of the capital, alarmed by rumors that the Dalai Lama may shortly be killed or kidnapped, flood the streets to protect him against the mounting threat of increasingly violent Chinese armed forces. I found myself holding my breath as hurried plans to escape in disguise, by night, were stitched together and carried out-–a gamble so desperate it could seem like something out of a spy novel, except that Talty never lets us forget for a moment that every moment was terrifyingly real. Nor does the tension let up during the account of the Dalai Lama’s perilous trek across the highest mountains of the world, pursued by troops and plagued by hunger, freezing temperatures, disease, and an uncertain reception at the end of the journey. Yet it is during this epic flight that the transformation of the young Dalai Lama’s character-–through stages of exhilaration, fear, anger, despair, and finally, exhausted yet triumphant relief-–feels most intensely personal. Escape from the Land of Snows is biography at its best: suspenseful, revealing, and profoundly humane.

Indonesia - Hotel 50 meter swimming pool

The Borobudur Hotel in Jakarta, Indonesia. Twenty years ago this November, I arrived to this hotel at 8PM after a two-day flight from the US and a one-night layover at Narita...my first trip to Asia.

I sat in one of the white lounge chairs that you see at the far end of this pool and ate ice cream (purchased in the hotel coffee shop) with my friends, all the time worrying about food poisoning from dairy products! I remember worrying about the safety of the in-flight meal as well...how stupid of me !

I didn't do anything that night...but the next day I began a 20 year experience in SE Asia...an incredible adventure that continues today. Pleasure and pain of a hundred mundane lifetimes compressed into 20 years.

That first trip to Jakarta lasted a month, and I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to Soekarno-Hatta airport to return home. But I was back in Jakarta one month later.

The rest is history....

The pool is 50 meters long...the longest hotel swimming pool in SE Asia. Once I stood dripping and shivering in the lobby of this hotel to watch Charles and Princess Diana walk by on the way to their room.

In those days, it was the Borobudur Intercontinental Hotel. There was an ad for a sister hotel called the Siam Intercontinental in Bangkok. I wondered if I would ever travel to there...

One year...1991 I think...I spent 110 nights in this hotel and got 110,000 miles in my Delta Frequent Flier account from that ! Good for a couple of free air tickets to Asia !

Shameful Flight: The Last Years of the British Empire in India

Britain's precipitous and ill-planned disengagement from India in 1947--condemned as a "shameful flight" by Winston Churchill--had a truly catastrophic effect on South Asia, leaving hundreds of thousands of people dead in its wake and creating a legacy of chaos, hatred, and war that has lasted over half a century.
Ranging from the fall of Singapore in 1942 to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948, Shameful Flight provides a vivid behind-the-scenes look at Britain's decision to divest itself from the crown jewel of its empire. Stanley Wolpert, a leading authority on Indian history, paints memorable portraits of all the key participants, including Gandhi, Churchill, Attlee, Nehru, and Jinnah, with special focus on British viceroy, Lord Louis Mountbatten. Wolpert places the blame for the catastrophe largely on Mountbatten, the flamboyant cousin of the king, who rushed the process of nationhood along at an absurd pace. The viceroy's worst blunder was the impetuous drawing of new border lines through the middle of Punjab and Bengal. Virtually everyone involved advised Mountbatten that to partition those provinces was a calamitous mistake that would unleash uncontrollable violence. Indeed, as Wolpert shows, civil unrest among Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs escalated as Independence Day approached, and when the new boundary lines were announced, arson, murder, and mayhem erupted. Partition uprooted over ten million people, 500,000 to a million of whom died in the ensuing inferno.
Here then is the dramatic story of a truly pivotal moment in the history of India, Pakistan, and Britain, an event that ignited fires of continuing political unrest that still burn in South Asia.

[Coaches in Beijing]???? Yutong ??? Peripatetic Sword ZK6127HA ?? Yinjian Rear-right at Tsinghua Science Park East

A Yutong Peripatetic Sword 12m standard-deck tourism coach under model ZK6127HA

Yutong's Peripatetic Sword series and its long-distance version Holy Sword made an impressive debut on 2007 Beijing Commercial Vehicle Exhibition. Highlighting Chinese aesthetic design and new coach technologies, the twin initiated their excellence on the market since then.

The exterior design is focused on Chinese impression, conveying characteristics of delicate prettiness and restrained gracefulness. Lines on all sides are simple but smoothly link up. Beneath the large curved front windscreen, no over-lavish ornaments appears. The rear-view mirrors and tail lights (not shown in this picture) are more straight-cut rather than complexly shaped. The overall style of Peripatetic Sword perfectly matches its tourism orientation.

Computer-aided design is complete with software that aided fighter-plane design. Based on the Yutong’s own dedicatedly designed chassis, the Swords’ bodies are built with advanced technologies, like skinning, on Yutong’s updated product lins. The engine compartment features an Engine Heat Management System which improves fuel burning, compartment cooling and power outputting. The Heat Management is one of Yutong’s most essential technological recommendations. ZK6127HA’s power is from either Yuchai YC6L310-30 or Weichai WP10.336, 310hp and 336hp respectively, both Euro III.

ZK6127HAs of Yinjian International Travel Service are lower-equipped. Suspension is a multi-spring structure, jeopardizing the comfort of ride although the interior with only 51 seats are quite roomy. Engines aboard these coaches are Yuchai products.

A line of Peripatetic Swords operated by Yinjian are parking along a branch road within Tsinghua Science Park, at the foot of the high-rise office complexes. These Yinjian coaches are chartered by sohu web as employee shuttles.

While the front axle is a national made (or CKD optional)Neoplan independent suspension axle, the driving axle is either a national-made Beiben (North Benz) with drum brake or an imported American Meritor with disc brake. The capacity of this coach is 53 excluding the driver and the tour guide. The quality of the BFC6120-2DBA is beyond doubt---North Neoplan is a subsidiary

The Great Siege: Malta 1565

The Great Siege: Malta 1565

Suleiman the Magnificent, the most powerful ruler in the world, was determined to conquer Europe. Only one thing stood in his way: a dot of an island in the Mediterranean called Malta, occupied by the Knights of St. John, the cream of the warriors of the Holy Roman Empire. A clash of civilizations was shaping up the likes of which had not been seen since Persia invaded Greece. Determined to capture Malta and use its port to launch operations against Europe, Suleiman sent an armada and an overwhelming army. A few thousand defenders in Fort St. Elmo fought to the last man, enduring cruel hardships. When they captured the fort the Turks took no prisoners and mutilated the defenders' bodies. Grand Master La Vallette of the Knights reciprocated by decapitating his Turkish prisoners and using their heads to cannonade the enemy. Then the battle for Malta began in earnest: no quarter asked; none given. The Siege of Malta is not merely a gripping tale of brutality, courage, and tenacity, but the saga of two mighty civilizations struggling for domination of the known world.

    price comparison
  • On the internet, a price comparison service (also known as shopping comparison or price engine) allows individuals to see different lists of prices for specific products. Most price comparison services do not sell products themselves, but source prices from retailers from whom users can buy.

  • We know, price comparisons don't truly qualify for hot deal web sites but they're handy little devils for finding the best price. Agree?

  • using price as a means of comparing two or more products in order tojudge: (a) their likely quality in the absence ofother information; (b) which offers the best valuefor money.

G9 ISO80 1/200s F4.0 75mm > dcraw H0W AHD 3-color > Gimp crop, gamma 1.50, strong USM & contrast]

...I saw this, first thing that I wanted to do is rotate it ccw, my monitor is that badly-aligned. I checked it with the grid tool in Gimp *and* just using the toolboxes as a horizontal level, and it's fine. My monitor is just that screwed-up.

So the normal comments apply about pastiness, chalkiness and pastel-looking colors even after cranking up the contrast. I had to push the gamma, this shot was just too dark without it, but at least I was able to get this without blowing-out the superbright clouds in the background.

Another "HDR" photo? Feel free to shoot & try it yourself. Doesn't seem like it would take much to do an exposure-mask here and push the gamma of the lower-exposed parts of the scene. But to what benefit? Too little of the scene is in the highlights, most people would be happy to just push the whole thing.

So anyway. I am somewhat miffed that I just spent $300 on a used A200/18-70 combo and then another $400 on a Tamron 18-250 & Tiffen UV filter, but then again it wasn't the $700 that a D90 would have cost me plus the $500 that a Tamron 18-270VC would have cost. For a bigger, heavier camera, with a lens that was less sharp across the focal-length range, all for slightly-cleaner shots ISO100-800 & more-detailed shots at ISO1600-3200. Honestly I spent a good part of yesterday thinking of just how much I would enjoy actually having a D700 & Tamron 28-300VC, even if the $3500 for that combo wasn't a problem, financially. That's a surprisingly-effective rig when it comes to taking pictures, but then again, that light-streaking (where it streaks overexposed highlights at around -2eV relative to the scene, at least in continuous drive) really take the edge off it.

That's a great rig, for taking pictures of just about anything that can be seen with the naked eye. But, man, that's a big & heavy camera & lens. I remember many times beginning to seriously-hate the 5D & that same Tamron 28-300VC lens just walking around, because at close to 5 pounds it begins to be a serious pain on the shoulder.

Oh sure, it's a great combination. And the pics from the 5D & Tamron, ISO100-1600, they definitely made me smile, ISO1600-6400 the D700 combo just amazed me.

But you don't want to *have* to carry a big & heavy camera & lens just to take good pictures.

And if you don't have to carry it just to take good pictures, that means that it will be taken-out, taken-with, less and less often...and used less and less often. Then it makes less and less sense to buy & to own in the first place. That's the problem with expensive gear (I am trying hard to not use the 2nd-person so much): it has to be used a lot for its purchase and continued ownership to make sense, unless of course it's purchased as a collectors' item. But what sense does *that* make?

Just think of it: Jay Leno gets paid tens of millions a year to host an hour-long nightly "comedy" show on late-night TV. What does he do with the money? He collects cars. Is that *really* the best that we can do? I think that I can do better than that, really.

I know that I can do better than buying & carrying a big & heavy D90 & Tamron 28-300VC lens which is just as big and heavy as a D700 & Tamron 28-300VC but not as good and then rarely shooting it. The Alpha and Tamron 18-250 I can at least leave in my backpack without sweating the size & weight but it will give me a much-better FL-range, better IQ at low ISO and better low-light performance than the G9, plus I can still carry the G9 with it, comfortably. And we'll see about the IQ comparison.

And again it cost me $815 for the camera *and* the lens vs the $1500 or so that even a 5D & Tamron 28-300VC would have cost me. There simply wasn't another subframe and IS-superzoom combo that I could have bought that would have given me comparable performance, size & weight at a comparable price. Even if I had to sacrifice ISO1600 to get into it. My only concern is that I will look at the pics and wish that I had just gone ahead and gotten another D300 and the Tamron 18-270VC and be happy shooting jpegs. I had a D300 with the original Nikon 18-200VR2 which was a real "piece of shit" lens in terms of sharpness, and while that combination was crap for fine-detail it had "amazing" color. Literally the best color that I've ever seen out of a digital camera. But that was shooting jpeg. Through a dull lens with a ton of NR leaving virtually no fine-detail (though the AF was exceptionally good on that camera). At this point I would love to have a D300 and shoot it raw knowing that I can use the embedded jpegs at 12MP. But that would get me right back to the point of carrying that big-ass camera & a *dull* lens all the time.

Seriously the more that you have to carry it, the more the weight matters more

BUCKER BU-133C JUNGMEISTER

BUCKER BU-133C JUNGMEISTER

The Jungmeister dominated the aerobatic scene in Europe and the United States during the mid-1930s and 1940s, and the Museum's Jungmeister is especially important because of the four great aerobatic pilots who flew it. The modest size, plus a high power-to-weight ratio, with ailerons on both upper and lower wings, insured its future as an excellent aerobatic aircraft.

The Bucker Bu-133 Jungmeister was a production biplane built in Germany before World War II and in Spain during the war. It was the single-seat version of the Bu-131A Jungmann, a two-place advanced aerobatic sport and training plane introduced in 1934 by Bucker Flugzeugbau in Berlin. The Jungmann became popular with the flying schools of Luftsportverband, a civil flying association during the early 1930s before military flight was allowed in Germany. In reality, the association trained the pilots who formed a clandestine air arm that later became the Luftwaffe. In 1935, Carl Bucker introduced the single seat Jungmeister, so similar to the Jungman that parts could be interchanged. While the Jungmeister was designed to use either the Hirth HM 506 160-hp inline air-cooled engine or the seven-cylinder radial air-cooled Siemens Sh-14A of 160 hp, the latter engine was used almost exclusively. The fuselage was a steel tube covered with fabric, and the wings were built of wooden spars and ribs with fabric cover, with the upper and lower panels being interchangeable. The outer wing panels had an 11-degree sweep-back.

Because of its agility and lightness on the controls, it was selected by a number of European flying clubs and air services as an advance trainer for aerobatics. Some pilots of the prewar era contend that the only aircraft that matched the Jungmeister were the specially built Great Lakes trainers, but others even question this comparison. A number of Jungmeisters still exist, both here and in Europe, and command high prices because of their scarcity and demonstrated maneuverability. After World War II, a limited number of the airplanes were produced near Munich, but high labor costs made them almost prohibitively expensive. This situation and the growing enthusiasm for aerobatic flying led to the development of rival types such as the Pitts Special, the Zlin 526A Trener Master, and the Yak 18 PS.

The Museum's Jungmeister, YR-PAX and later N15696, was flown exclusively by aerobatic champions. Aerobatic pilot Alex Papana acquired the aircraft and it shipped to the United States in 1936 aboard the airship Hindenburg. During the Cleveland Air Races of 1937, both Papana and Count Hagenburg flew the aircraft in competition after the latter's Jungmeister crashed while these two pilots were engaging in a showmanship contest. Papana made a low level inverted pass in front of the grandstands, and Hagenburg, not wishing to be outdone, repeated the maneuver at no more than a few feet above the ground. But as he pushed forward to climb out, the vertical fin hit the ground slowing him sufficiently to cause the plane to crash. Fortunately, Hagenburg was not injured seriously, and a few minutes later he was back in the air completing his performance in Papana's Jungmeister.

The aircraft was severely damaged in 1940 and was acquired by Mike Murphy, who had already flown it to win the American Aerobatic Championship at the Miami All American Air Maneuvers in 1938. He rebuilt it with a Warner engine and flew it to victory again in 1940. Beverly "Bevo" Howard soon bought the Jungmeister and won the 1946 and 1947 aerobatic championships with it. Howard took great pleasure in flying numerous weekend air shows and programs for worthy causes, and he always performed at the graduation ceremonies for aviation cadets at Hawthorne Aviation Company Schools, of which he was president, in Charleston, South Carolina. Unfortunately, on October 17, 1971, while flying at a show in Greenville, North Carolina, he had a fatal accident. The Jungmeister was almost demolished but was rebuilt by his estate and friends who had worked with him during its flying career. Howard's estate donated the restored aircraft to the National Air and Space Museum in June 1973. The Museum displayed the Jungmeister in its Exhibition Flight gallery and then lent it to the Naval and Maritime Museum at Patriot's Point, South Carolina for several years before its return to NASM. It is currently on display at the Museum's Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport in Chantilly, Virginia.

An Assessment of Space Shuttle Flight Software Development Processes

Effective software is essential to the success and safety of the Space Shuttle, including its crew and its payloads. The on-board software continually monitors and controls critical systems throughout a Space Shuttle flight. At NASA's request, the committee convened to review the agency's flight software development processes and to recommend a number of ways those processes could be improved. This book, the result of the committee's study, evaluates the safety, oversight, and management functions that are implemented currently in the Space Shuttle program to ensure that the software is of the highest quality possible. Numerous recommendations are made regarding safety and management procedures, and a rationale is offered for continuing the Independent Verification and Validation effort that was instituted after the Challenger Accident.

"Quest"

In downtown Portland, in front of the Standard Insurance Building, stands a well-known sculpture most locals refer to as "Family Night at the Y" or "Three Groins in a Fountain".

While both monikers describe the sculpture well, I don't think they're meant to be scornful. The sculpture is very peaceful and most people like it. Perhaps the nicknames arise from it showing a tableau one doesn't often see outside of marble or, say, a Ron Jeremy film.

I finally learned the statue's official name recently when I wandered up and read the small plaque near the south end.

Quest
Sculptor: Count Alexander von Svoboda - 1970

John Ashcroft would probably denounce Quest as a six breasted, two penis'ed abomination (and smother it under a special tax-payer-funded nipple-shrouding, breast resistant tarp) but we Portlanders proudly call it ours.

Hewn from white marble, the large sculpture prominently features two women kind of rearing up like horses or caught mid-dance, arms entwined, and a man kind of flying up beside one of them. (It looks like they all came out of a water slide at the same time or something — not really a pose people could "hold"). If you come up to the sculpture and walk around it you'll see there are two more people carved in it: a little boy standing and a woman resting.

The sculpture sits in the southern end of a long rectangular pool. The pool itself is about fifty feet long and fifteen feet wide and takes up about half of the space in front of the building. The two "rearing" women of the sculpture "face" south. The base of the sculpture is surrounded by small water jets, which provide a small amount of white water and a larger amount of white noise. There is also a small waterfall coming from the statue itself, falling noiselessly from between where the two women's hips meet. In the 60% of the fountain not taken up by the statue, two vertical jets shoot water about five feet into the air. Nine floodlights, submerged in the ten (or so) inches of water light the statue during the evening.

The fountain is surrounded by a lip about ten inches high and fourteen inches wide; almost perfect for sitting and, judging from the amount of cigarette butts littering the northwest corner, smoke breaks. Across Fifth street from Quest are Happy Bowl, a Radio Shack and a Carl's Jr. If you're in need of some bento, criss-cut fries, or a roll of overpriced solder, your salvation is just steps away.

Sitting by the fountain the sounds you hear are the white noise splashing of water and the muted rumble of Tri Met buses as they drive by (or the squeak of their brakes as they stop for passengers). Something so calming about the sound of water (unless you're in a sinking rowboat with a lump of pure sodium in your lap I suppose).

In search of yet more Quest information I ventured inside the Standard Insurance Building. Sitting behind the desk in the lobby was a nice woman named Evelyn and I asked her if she had any information on the statue out front. She grabbed a black notebook from beneath her huge desk*, removed the rubberband holding it closed and handed me a single Xeroxed page from within.

Here's what I learned.

First, Evelyn is totally on top of the whole statue inquiry thing. Seriously, hats off to Evelyn.

Second:

The sculptor Alexander von Svoboda was born in Vienna, Austria and now lives (at least he did at the time of the Xeroxed paper's writing) in Ontario, Canada.

Von Svoboda actually created two pieces of sculpture for the plaza of (what was then) the Georgia-Pacific Building. (I'm not sure what the second one is or if it still exists, I'll have to take another trip and walk around the building.)

According to the wizened guard who spelled Evelyn at 4pm, Georgia-Pacific moved out of the building a while ago ("They're off in... Tigard now I think"). The name of the building then changed to the Standard Insurance Building which we all know and love today.
Quest (or "The Quest" as the paper refers to it) was carved from a 190-ton block of "white pentelic marble". I figured "pentelic" must mean "you can't afford it" until I looked it up and found that it actually means

"Of or pertaining to Mount Pentelicus, near Athens, famous for its fine white marble quarries; obtained from Mount Pentelicus; as, the Pentelic marble of which the Parthenon is built."
Source: Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, © 1996, 1998 MICRA, Inc.

Now just stop for a second and think: 190 tons. One hundred and ninety tons. That's 380,000 pounds. You ever help a friend move? You get pretty tired of carrying those damn boxes of hardback books up three flights of stairs, right? (especially since there's always that one guy that shows up late and only takes in stuff like throw cushions) Well sure, those boxes of books are heavy, but they ain't nothing compared to this block of marble. That's a spicy

    space flight
  • A journey through space

  • Space Flight is an album recorded by organist Sam Lazar on June 1, 1960 for Argo Records. This was Lazar's debut recording, and Green's second recording.

  • Space travel

  • Spaceflight or space flight is the use of space technology to achieve the flight of spacecraft into and through outer space.

    sim games
  • (Sim game) A simulation video game describes a diverse super-category of computer and video games, generally designed to closely simulate aspects of a real or fictional reality.

  • (Sim-game (or Sim)) Stands for simulation.  Sim-games simulate something as it actually is in real life as best as possible.  The more real world it seems, the more likely it is a sim.  Sim City, The Sims, Madden Football, NBA2K are all versions of different types of sims.

  • The simulation game or simply game is simulation of various activities in "real life" in the form of a game for various purposes: training, analysis, or prediction. Usually there are no strictly defined goals in the game, just running around, playing as your character.

Traffic Expansion for MS Flight Simulator X/2004 DVD

Flight Simulator X: Traffic Expansion Pack brings the action of the airport to life on your PC! It features a unique new AI traffic approach management feature, designed to drastically reduce the number of go-arounds that are performed by AI planes at busy airports. Instruct approaching planes to perform holding patterns if they are following the plane in front too closely. If AI planes come too close, are heading in the same general direction and are within an altitude range that suggests you are both established on an approach path, then the AI planes will be instructed to perform holding patterns. Requires Flight Simulator X or Flight Simulator 2004 to play.

Three screens!!! I found some 3840x1024 wallpapers, the equivalent of 3 1280x1024 screens, which is the limit of the 3 Dell 1905FP 19" monitors I have here, as well as the output maximum of the Matrox TripleHead2Go, so everything's all matched up pretty well then, no? I thought so. Everything's at it's natural limit.

I've researched quite a bit, read things by Nvidia staff, and talked to hardcore gamers, hackers, professional programmers, and even those who program things like video drivers, and no one anywhere online or off seems to have a good solution for driving 3 displays with full hardware acceleration with 2 cards.

I couldn't find a card with 3 DVI outs, and with 2 dual-out cards, you can get hardware acceleration on 2 monitors, but the third will render in software, and you can't play a game across all 3. There are videos on YouTube of people playing everything from Quake to Microsoft Flight Sim on everything up to 24 monitors, maybe even more, but they're either custom hacking the software somehow, or using many PCs.

E.g. the video in which the guy uses 24 monitors also has him using 12 PCs networked together, and maybe some software hackage. The only option for me, without paying thousands and thousands of dollars, and greatly increasing my energy bill, and decreasing the space in my room was the Matrox TripleHead2Go, which simply tells the PC that it's a super-wide monitor, then takes that single, wide, hardware accelerated signal, and divvies it up to 3 monitors. I have 3-display hardware rendering now :)

What Little Girls Are Made Of 2

What Little Girls Are Made Of 2

What little girls are made of: sugar, spice, and everything nice. Also: really cute clothes.

Revel in the girliness with this handmade textile wall art. Perfect for a little girl's room or nursery, or even in the laundry room of a home especially blessed with females (such as my own).

Hand-cut, hand-stitched, and made from my own design. The letters are also individually hand-stamped as well. The clothing fabric is from Moda's soft and whimsical "Lily and Will" line. I used stiffener on the back so it wouldn't fray, which allows me to leave it stiched only by the little "clothespins" on the line. They actually look like they're swaying in the summer breeze :) The background is wool felt. The wooden embroidery hoop measures 9.5" horizontally and 5.5" vertically. I've also trimmed the hoop with pink ribbon along the edge.
