This morning Andre Borschberg had been for four hours and 21 minutes in the air, until he touched down at 00:41 pm on the international airport in Geneva. The return flight to Payerne also run smoothly -since 5:31 pm the Prototype HB-SIA is back in Payerne.

Immediately tomorrow Andre Borschberg will set off for the second flight within the Swiss Flights. This time the international airport of Zurich will be the goal. Tomorrow?s flight will also be broadcast under „eco-friendly brought to you by Deutsche Bank“- with actual impressions, live webcast an video messages from the cockpit.

The SR-71 was the world's fastest and highest-flying operational manned aircraft throughout its career. From an altitude of 80,000 feet (24,000 m), it could survey 100,000 square miles (260,000 km2) per hour of the Earth's surface. In addition, it was accurate enough to take a legible picture of a car's license plate from this altitude.[49] On 28 July 1976, an SR-71 broke the world record for its class: an absolute speed record of 1,905.81 knots (2,193.17 mph; 3,529.56 km/h), and an "absolute altitude record" of 85,069 feet (25,929 m).[50][51] Several aircraft exceeded this altitude in zoom climbs but not in sustained flight.[52]

When the SR-71 was retired in 1990, one example was flown from its birthplace at United States Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, to go on exhibit at what is now the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (an annex of the National Air & Space Museum) in Chantilly, Virginia. On 6 March 1990, Lt. Col. Ed Yielding and Lt. Col. J. T. Vida piloted the Blackbird, setting a coast-to-coast aircraft speed record: 67 minutes 54 seconds, at an average speed 2,125 miles per hour (3,420 km/h). Three additional records were set within segments of the flight, including an average speed of 2,190 miles per hour (3,520 km/h) measured between the radar gates set up in St. Louis and Cincinnati. These four speed records were accepted by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA), the recognized body for aviation records in the United States.[53]. An enthusiast site devoted to the Blackbird lists a record time of 64 minutes 20 seconds between Los Angeles and Washington DC for that 6 March 1990 flight.[54]

The SR-71 also holds the "Speed Over a Recognized Course" record for flying from New York to London in 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds, set on 1 September 1974 while flown by U.S. Air Force Pilot Maj. James V. Sullivan and Maj. Noel F. Widdifield, reconnaissance system officer. [55] This equates to an average velocity of about Mach 2.68, including deceleration for in-flight refueling. Peak speeds during this flight were probably closer to the declassified top speed of Mach 3.2+. (For comparison, the best commercial Concorde flight time was 2 hours 52 minutes, and the Boeing 747 averages 6 hours 15 minutes.)

Heron poetry in motion

Heron poetry in motion

Today was a busy Heron morning.
As I get to the lake I see this fellow flying from the floating dock to the shore… under the trees. I move further out on the dock to see him and just in time to catch this image. Later I see another Heron on another floating dock, just against the blinding reflection of the water (AF not working). He is struggling to eat a huge fish without success. As I shoot him he takes off and I follow him… surprise! Another Heron enter my frame in chase to get the fish. After a short struggle he manage to land on a tree about 5 meters over the lake and 40 meters from me, the chaser is landing just below him in the water, waiting. After several minutes of trying to eat the fish… guess what happens?... Yes… he drops the fish and the Heron below catches him at no time and this guy knows how to swallow whole an 18”, almost 2 lbs. Bass.
How about this for a morning? Yes… more pix to come soon.

Thanks for your visits and kind comments.

Ooops, it’s the Great Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is a large wading bird in the heron family Ardeidae, common near the shores of open water and in wetlands over most of North and Central America as well as the West Indies and the Galapagos Islands. It is a rare vagrant to Europe, with records from Spain, the Azores and England. An all-white population found only in the Caribbean and southern Florida was once known as a separate species, the Great White Heron.

The Great Blue Heron was one of the many species originally described by Carolus Linnaeus in his 18th century work, Systema Naturae.
The Great Blue Heron is replaced in the Old World by the very similar Grey Heron, which differs in being somewhat smaller (90–98 cm), with a pale gray neck and legs, lacking the browner colors that Great Blue Heron has there. It forms a superspecies with this and also with the Cocoi Heron from South America, which differs in having more extensive black on the head, and a white breast and neck.

Description
It is the largest North American heron, with a head-to-tail length of 91–140 cm (36–55 in), a wingspan of 167–201 cm (66–79 in), and a weight of 2–3.6 kg (4.4–8 lbs). Notable features include slaty flight feathers, red-brown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front; the head is paler, with a nearly white face, and a pair of black plumes running from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like; it also has plumes on the lower back at the start of the breeding season. The bill is dull yellowish, becoming orange briefly at the start of the breeding season, and the lower legs gray, also becoming orangey at the start of the breeding season. Immature birds are duller in color, with a dull blackish-gray crown, and the flank pattern only weakly defined; they have no plumes, and the bill is dull gray-yellow.
The heron stride is around 22 cm (9 in), almost in a straight line. Two of the three front toes are generally closer together. In a track the front toes as well as the back often show the small talons.

Similar species
The "Great White Heron" could be confused with Great Egret but is larger, with yellow legs as opposed to the Great Egret's black legs. The Reddish Egret and Little Blue Heron could be mistaken for the Great Blue Heron, but are much smaller, and lack white on the head and yellow in the bill. In the southern reaches of its range, the Great Blue sometimes overlaps in range with the closely-related and similarly-sized Cocoi Heron. The Cocoi is distinguished by a striking white neck and solid black crown, but the duller juveniles are more easily confused. More superficially similar is the slightly smaller Grey Heron, which may sometimes vagrate to the Northern coasts of North America. The Grey (which occupies the same ecological niche in Eurasia as the Great Blue Heron) has very similar plumage but has a solidly soft-gray neck. Erroneously, the Great Blue Heron is sometimes referred to as a "crane".

The Adventures of the Red-Tailed Hawk

The Adventures of the Red-Tailed Hawk

This is cropped to about 1/15th of the original size, so the large view isn't good.

Willa and I arrived to hike where we visit frequently, but this time there were many cars in the lot. I'm accustomed to having one of only two or three cars there, if any, but it felt really safe today and I only ran into four people and saw one large group in the distance.

I'd seen three red-tailed hawks flying around but hadn't been close to any, but then when we were way out in the woods, I stopped to watch a lot of birds near a creek. Just as we started to walk again, hundreds of birds flew toward me, alarms going off right and left, with one robin nearly flying into my face. I looked up and here it came... a red-tailed hawk. It circled and moved on. Within a minute, the birds returned... and sang like spring birds in search of lovers, all around me. I think they thought I was responsible for warning them and wanted to thank me. It lasted for about two minutes and then they went about their normal business.

About 45 minutes later, we were up in the prairie when we spotted a feral cat we'd seen earlier. She's very pretty and was lying in the path, keeping an eye out where multiple birds were darting in and out among the tall grasses. I took several shots of her and then moved forward... she looked up and started to run, just as this hawk was coming at her. I'm so thankful I unintentionally interrupted that scene! It would have been awful to see a hawk grab a cat... I've known people who have seen it, but I never want to. By now, the hawk was agitated and wondering how in the world I kept being right there where his next meal was. He circled me several times, lower... then higher and off he went. Sorry, buddy... hope you found a nice meal somewhere. ... just not my little bird friends or that sweet feral cat.

Approaching Accra - Watching world cup in person is my childhood dream. As soon as I found out my favorite team Holland is a favorite to win all the way (by now we all know they lost to Spain at the final), I decided to make this trip of a lifetime!

Going to South Africa is not as simple as going to Florida or Europe. With some last minute planning, I was able to find a reasonablely priced ticket from United and South African Airways. The down side is I will have to stopover at Accra (the capital of Ghana) for a day and also Johannesburg before getting to my final destination – Port Elizabeth.

United begin its first African route to Accra several months ago with a $900 introductory price. The flight is a long 10 hrs and unfortuntately my fare is not upgradeable. Still, I was managed to get some sleep....

1930s Whitchurch Airport Bristol

1930s Whitchurch Airport Bristol

Every variety of land and seaplane used by the RAF and Fleet Air Arm passed through Whitchurch, including secret prototypes of advanced aircraft and even the RAF’s first operational jet, the Gloster Meteor.

The Luftwaffe, by chance or design, generally left the Lisbon flight alone. It might have been because it was useful, of course. Veteran journalist, the late Max Barnes, reckoned British agents were flown to Portugal from Whitchurch and German agents returned by the same route. It all seems rather gentlemanly now.

‘The Luftwaffe turned a blind eye to the Lisbon service because it served the German purpose to do so,’ claimed Barnes. ‘So Whitchurch saw the strange spectacle of bundles of British newspapers fresh from the presses being loaded on to Lisbon-bound aircraft. On arrival the papers were eagerly snapped up by Axis agents.’

The unsung heroes of the Air Transport Auxiliary who flew planes of all sizes and shapes around the country to where they were needed were based at Whitchurch, too. During the war, the ATA ferried 308,567 aircraft of 147 different types and lost 154 flight staff. After the war, the airport reverted to a civil airline terminal and was tipped as a major international hub. But the problems which the bigger wartime planes had in landing and taking off made it obvious it would never work and the inevitable happened.

These days, the airport is commemorated in Airport Road (part of the Bristol ring road) and in the Happy Landings pub. But you’ll seek in vain for this former airport.

In 1929, due to the crowded situation at Filton Airfield, Bristol City Council formed an Airport Committee which bought 298 acres of farmland at Whitchurch for ?15,500. The Airport was opened by the Duke of Kent in May 1930, and as well as club and private flying, 915 passengers were carried in the first year. It was only the third municipal airport in the country, after Croydon in Surrey and Heston in Middlesex.

By the end of the year, Whitchurch was a Customs airport, Airwork had opened a Service Depot, and seven private aircraft were based there. The buildings were at the south-east corner of the airfield, accessed from Whitchurch Lane, until Airport Road was built and a private access road was built on the east side of the airfield. For the next nine years the airport gradually increased its activities and by 1939 there were about 4000 passengers annually.

When the war started in 1939, Whitchurch Airport was requisitioned by the Air Ministry. Whitchurch became, for a time, Britain's only operational civil airport, receiving VIPs with the highest secrecy and security. Airline services were mainly to Lisbon and Foynes, the Irish seaplane terminal for transatlantic flights. By 1943, North African destinations were added.

Five large hangars were built on the north side of the airport during the war. Paved taxiways and the east-west runway, 3048 feet long, were completed by the end of 1941. This allowed most RAF, and later on USAF, craft to visit, usually staging through on delivery flights.

After the war ended the airport was managed by the new Ministry of Civil Aviation. When BOAC set up an aircraft maintenance operation at Filton in 1949, a branch of its in-house Airways Flying Club was formed at Whitchurch. But passenger flights were few until Cambrian Airways, partly owned by BEA, began services to British and French towns from 1953.

In the 1950s with the growth of housing limiting the opportunity to extend the Whitchurch runway, the city council agitated for a site for a new city controlled airport, and eventually succeeded in buying the former RAF airfield at Lulsgate Bottom in 1955, for ?55,000, from the Ministry of Aviation.

Airport buildings were put up and the new airport was opened by the Duchess of Kent (the Duke had been killed while serving in the RAF in the war) in May 1957. The Government had by then finally agreed to de-requisition Whitchurch, which was then gradually developed by the Airport Committee as Hengrove Park, and as a series of trading estates whose rents for many years contributed to the Airport accounts.

The runway, which was last used in 1993 when a Cessna light aircraft landed on it in emergency, still exists today.

Virgin Trip to America – Went with my loved ones (family n wife) on a package tour (a 40 ppl strong group) over a period of 12 days to California; it is the third-largest state in the United States in size, after Alaska and Texas. It’s a tormenting long distance flight of 17 hrs to and 21 hrs back from LA (our 1st stop at Tom Bradely international airport) but it’s all worth it. Overalll it’s a fantastic experience for all of us; felt the warmth hospitability and amicability of the locals there, great culture, accompanied by breathtaking landscapes along the way and not forgetting the crazy shopping spree we had in all 3 factory outlets that our tour guide brought us to. lol. We stopped by Los Angeles, Nevada, Fresno, San Francisco, a few cities to name.. Our itinerary covered famous landmarks like Las Vegas, Santa Monica, Fisherman Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, Grand Canyon, Hollywood walk of fame and lots more, not to mentioned rides and time spent at Disney land, California Adventure Park and Universal Studios were truly enjoyable. Weather was fine and relatively cool during our period of visit.

It’s without doubt a lovely country and I relish the opportunity to head back there again.
