Coney Island: Day to Night Series 4/10

My grandfather was infatuated with Coney Island. Not just because of its old electric fun park legacy (it was the site of the original Luna Park, etc., back in the early days of electricity -- remnants from that time can be found everywhere), but because the great social experiment that is New York was always on display. People from all walks of life, from all parts of the world, came here much as they do today to rub elbows, and have fun. This beach is accessible to all New Yorkers by subway. He used to bring me to this part of Brooklyn when I was a kid, and we used to walk around for hours. This series of 10 taken on a single day during a walk reminiscent of the ones I used to take with my grandfather, from day through night. In this series, I tried to challenge myself to capture the allure of the place as a curious outsider might have seen the place.

Admittedly, at this position, the camera was not the most still with my hands on it, but it was better than the stack of shoeboxes I'd been using up till now because I couldn't find the connector plate. :-P But if I set the timer for ten seconds, it gives the camera enough time to settle down at the end of its pole there.

This is a test snap of us in the camera shop where I purchased my new Canon. We visited a shopping center for the first time in 1 and a half months and it was great! It was strange to see escalators and Starbucks again! Although the clothes here are all crazy bright garments that don't match and pretty much every shop sells the same things.

My underwater camera

ok, so it's not the best photo in the world, but my good camera was inside the housing :0)

Anyway, this is my 400d in its Ikelite housing with single DS51 strobe. I've taped a Q40 mini torch to the top to use as a spottingfocussing light (and actually works well as a main dive torch when it's not really really dark). It's got a 60mm macro lens in it at the moment, but I'm keen to get a port for my tamron 10-17mm fisheye sometime so I can try out some wide-angle stuff.

It attaches to me with 2 stainless steel carabiners - one is on an extendable lanyard, so it stays attached to me all the time but gives me room to move it wherever I fancy. The other is a short piece of rope which holds it closer to my body when I'm going in and out the water. It seems to work pretty well, although if you let it go it tends to tip upside down... I might add another small clip to the strobe arm if I can be bothered just to stop it floating about but it's not a big deal.

I've been working on a curved plane pinhole camera to replace the first one I tried. This one has a curved back from laminated veneer to reduce overall size. the film mask is half of 4" steel tube I polished to a shine for less friction. I spent alot more time on this one making sure all the gaps are reduced to a minimum and surfaces that contact film are slick to reduce friction. The film spools sit on the black curve which is a plastic I laminated to the wood to also reduce friction.The top and bottom are 1/8" aluminum sheet which hold the back snug. The back will have a set of rollers attached similar to the Noblex which hold the film against the mask. If I have any patience left when it's done I'll add an additional pinhole to the top of the camera for a perpendicular effect similar to an anamorphic camera.

This is the new pinhole camera I made last night. I painted it because I was sick of looking at black foamcore. It desperately needs a tripod mount - the next time I go to the hardware store I'll pick one up. Tried shooting with it this morning and it's just too unstable without being attached to a tripod. When it fell face down into the snow, I called it done. :) Focal length is 46mm, a little longer than I had wanted, but I fail at basic math, apparently. Hopefully I'll still get a wide angle. Pinhole size is probably around .28 - .3 mm. I didn't measure it. It looked smalled than the .346 mm pinholes I already had drilled out.

This is an M42 screw mount SLR made by Yashica in the late 1960's (camera in production from 1967 onwards, and this is an early model). The special feature compared to most other M42 SLRs is the ability to lock up the mirror and thus avoid camera shake from the mirror slap. Yashica also had some lenses available which extended so far into the camera body that the mirror had to be locked up to use them.

Flash sync: 1/60s (hotshoe and sync terminal)
Microprism viewfinder. Reasonably bright and large, but not as good as the Fujica, Pentax or Vivitar XC-2. Also, I'd prefer a split-prism over just the microprism spot.

Stopped-down metering with match-needle display. (Very inaccurate in mine.)
Battery: SR44 (1.5v)

Light seals on these cameras will almost certainly need replacing, as with many other vintage cameras. I've replaced the ones in mine myself with good results.

Favorites 2: Velbon TGK-3 Tripod

Hans mentioned his Velbon tripod the other day and it got me thinking...

My old lightweight Velbon is easily my favorite tripod. It's light enough to come along and set up quickly, yet just sturdy enough to stay put.

I've used both lighter tripods (too flimsy) and heavier tripods (get left at home).

This old fella has to be my favorite.

Broken Tripod

Here's what happened to my cheap ass Velbon CX-460 tripod. I've been using it in ~-18°C (shouldn't have done that probably), when the plastic suddenly cracked somehow and the middle thingy lossend up. Now it's like this all the time, but still usable though.
