This is a Word Cloud of the Song, "Amazing Grace." A word cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of user-generated tags, or simply the word content of a site, typically used to describe the content of web sites. Tags are usually single words and are normally listed alphabetically, and the importance of each tag is shown with font size or color.[ Thus, it is possible to find a tag alphabetically and by popularity. The tags are usually hyperlinks that lead to a collection of items that are associated with a tag. Sometimes, further visual properties are manipulated, such as the font color, intensity, or weight. I created this one in Wordle.

My Hill is a Blessing

My Hill is a Blessing

Finished 5/08 by Mark Kuhne

Ezekiel 34: 26-27
And I will make them and the places round about my hill a blessing; and I will cause the shower to come down in his season; there shall be showers of blessing. And the tree of the field shall yield her fruit, and the earth shall yield her increase, and they shall be safe in their land, and shall know that I [am] the LORD, when I have broken the bands of their yoke, and delivered them out of the hand of those that served themselves of them.

This is a new covenant of peace. His hill is a place to revere Him. Not only do you look up to God on His hill, but you also can look out and see further. Similar to Elijah at the top of Carmel seeing dark clouds holding lots of rain to end a drought, God is bringing blessings at the right time: showers refresh (blessings) and remove dirt (curses). Even the land is faithful and yields her increase, the fields are ready for harvest.

The skies and the fields include yellows, oranges and reds, His illumination and blood: Christ is the gift of God to us, our hope. Christ lives in us, His light shines on us, and He covers us with His precious blood. The Holy Spirit dwells in us and gives us wisdom, anointing and power!

The tree represents wisdom and strength, it stands tall and strong and receives the wind and rain (the Holy Spirit). Do you hear the wind? We are blessed and bring forth the 9 fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22, 23).

The water or sea represents the opportunities and revelations that run deep: it is in the sea that the fisherman cast out their nets for their greatest catch. Their nets began to break and their boats began to sink. There is abundance in the sea. What do you see?

Colors vibrate off the canvas. Our eyes see and our ears hear vibration. The Lord “spoke” out creation in Genesis, there is a “sound” of abundance in I Kings, and in Revelation a door was open in heaven and the first “voice” was like a trumpet. There was also a new song, followed by the angels’ loud voices, that was followed by the voice like thunder. The colors harmonize a new song…Sing to the Lord a new song, your song (Psalm 149)! Amazing grace, how sweet the “sound”…

Give Christ the Glory!

Monks with Dungchen (long Tibetan trumpets) & Tang Du (drum)

Monks with Dungchen (long Tibetan trumpets) & Tang Du (drum)

Bhutan. Bumthang. Chokhor Valley. Tamshing.
The "Mewang" (Fire blessing ceremony) where the locals run underneath a huge flaming gate made out of dry grasses with ambers and piles of burning grasses falling on their head.
Bhutanese believe that by jumping over this particular fire will bring blessings and burn away the sins you have created.

The dungchen is a long trumpet used in Tibetan and Bhutanese Buddhist ceremonies. It is the most widely used instrument in Tibetan Buddhist culture. It is often played in pairs or multiples, and the sound is compared to the singing of elephants.

The Tang Du is the traditional Buddhist shaman's drum used in Nepali & Tibetan cultural ceremonies. Carved handle, skin heads with rawhide lacing. Comes with playing stick.

The Scar

The Scar

So, I know I’ve taken several pictures of my hand and mentioned the scar in the middle of my hand, but I’m not sure just how well you could really see it so I decided to take a picture of it. Of course, I also wanted to show off my manicured nails that I bought myself for my birthday. I’ve never had nails long enough to do a french manicure, so this was a big thing for me. I love it, but they’re already chipping…grrr…

The scar. My Mom and Dad will tell you I was trying to hang our dog in the tree. That, however, was not really the case. I had the idea when I was a kid that if I took a rope and tied it loosely around a tree branch, the dog would be able to move back and forth and have more room to move around the yard rather than just being chained. Like those runners for dogs, you know? Well, I fell out of the tree, tried to catch a branch that had broken off, and cut my hand open. I remember all of this. What I don’t remember is the fact that I had to get stitches, but I can see the points on either side of the scar like I did have stitches. My parents came down Saturday (and we had a lovely visit – love you guys!) and we talked about this scar and they said I did, in fact, get stitches. I don’t remember that part. At all. It’s just an interesting scar to me and I’ve been thinking about it often lately for some reason.

I had a good birthday, I shopped, bought a dress and a shirt (the dress I will definitely get a picture of don’t worry), got my nails done, cleaned the house since my parents were coming, and went to dinner. It was a very good day.

So, I got tagged for my very first time by Ben (thanks Ben!) and I have to tell you ten things about myself. Hmmm….what in the world could I possibly tell you? Am I that interesting to come up with ten things to tell you? Hmmm….well, let’s see what we can do.

1. My favorite colors are blue and purple, though I’m apparently also becoming very fond of yellow and green.
2. I wanted to be a meteorologist and I still think about it.
3. I love horses, I’ve always wanted one.
4. I seem to have a bit of OCD, the older I get, the worse it seems to get.
5. I used to bite my nails obsessively, but I’ve finally stopped.
6. I love music, all kinds and types of music. I was in a band for a few months, but it ended up not working out and I seriously miss it. Being on stage doesn’t bother me, I enjoy it. (And don’t laugh, but I grew up idolizing Dolly Parton, my biggest influence as a kid).
7. I can play the piano, guitar and clarinet, but guitar is my weapon of choice at the moment.
8. I’m apparently very uncoordinated. I had a chance to work as a singer/waitress on a boat once, but I didn’t take the job because I knew I’d fall down and not be very good as a waitress.
9. My daddy is a preacher and a damn good one at that.
10. I love photography, I always have, and I’d love to be hired by people (and paid, as well) to do photography, even if only as a side gig.

Shew! Wow, that was hard. Okay, I’m gonna go wipe the sweat from my brow and take a breather now after that!

Oh, and if I tagged, you, I guess you're supposed to tell us 10 things about you and tag another 10 people, if I understand this correctly. Play along if you like, if not, I understand completely! ;o)

B&H Emperor Clarinet circa 1973

B&H Emperor Clarinet circa 1973

My clarinet my parents bought for me from Yardleys in Old Snow Hill, Birmingham. I must have been 15yrs old when they bought it for me for Christmas. It cost ?100 or thereabouts and I said I didn't want any other presents (I got them anyway). It's not the top of the range of the Boosey and Hawkes clarinets but it's the next best thingand the forerunner of the E13. Great sound. I played in the school orchestra, Lichfield Music Centre and County Orchestra. Used to play a lot and I taught it for a while to supplement my income until I moved away to London. Over the years I've thought about getting it out but this year is the year I make a New Year's Resolution to dust it off and start playing again. I've given it a clean and oiled the joints, sounds fine although I feel some of the pads may need an overhaul.

36th International Bamboo Organ Festival

36th International Bamboo Organ Festival

36th Int'l-Bamboo Organ Festival set for Feb. 17-23
(The Philippine Star) Updated February 07, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The International Bamboo Organ Festival of Las Pinas on Feb. 17 to 23 is no ordinary music festival. It may well be the only festival that has for its centerpiece a unique music instrument that has been officially named a national treasure.

Crafted by Spanish priest Diego Cera, the Bamboo Organ of Las Pinas had religious beginnings. At first, it was used exclusively for liturgical purposes until the residents were inspired to make it the focus of a full-fledged festival of sacred music. Now on its 36th season, the Bamboo Organ Festival has earned a reputation both nationally and internationally and is the source of pride among Filipinos everywhere.

The bamboo organ is a serious instrument in the classic Spanish style and some the world’s best-known organists have enjoyed its charm and color. Fr. Diego Cera de la Virgen del Carmen was responsible for the organ and the church that houses it. An Augustinian Recollect, he was parish priest of Las Pinas and the son of a family of organ builders in his native Spain. He was a gifted natural scientist, chemist, architect, community leader and organist.

The festival brought Philippine music, culture and tradition to the international stage. It has opened avenues for international artists to showcase their talents.

The bamboo organ brought together parishioners, townsfolk and artists in a celebration of life. National Artist Alejandro Roces, after an extensive study on different fiestas of the Philippines, included the Bamboo Organ Festival in his upcoming book about Philippine fiestas — a testimony of the festival’s value in Philippine history and culture.

The annual International Bamboo Organ Festival recently unveiled its plans for its 36th edition.

Excerpts from some of Johann Sebastian Bach’s more celebrated cantatas will be featured in the opening concert titled Back to BACH. It makes use of a recently-acquired collection of scores from Bach’s more than 250 cantatas. In the lineup are well-known choruses, sinfonias and organ concertos which show why Bach is the most beloved composer of the Baroque period.

Future concerts will have several choirs as performers: The Las Pinas Boys Choir, champion of the 2008 World Choir Games in Graz, Austria; Hail Mary the Queen Children’s Choir, University of the East Chorale and Imusicapella Chamber Choir. Noted Filipino conductors Joel Navarro and EudenicePalarauan will also take center stage with visiting artists Luc Ponet (Belgium), organ; Guido Segers (Belgium), trumpet and Raphael Leone (Austria), flute. Filipino soloists are Armando Salarza, organ; Gina Medina, violin; Rey Casey Concepcion, viola and Renato Lucas, cello.

An innovation in the programming is the chamber music concert that will end the festival and feature rarely-played baroque compositions. Upon the invitation of Hail Mary the Queen Children’s Choir, other children’s choirs will be invited starting this year.

Commissioned choral work Jubilate! composed by Alejandro Consolacion II, who also arranged a cycle of popular Philippine folk songs, will premiere this year.

The festival is presented by Bamboo Organ Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Department of Tourism, PAGCOR, Embassy of Austria, Sen. Manuel Villar Jr., Rep. Mark Villar, Mayor Vergel Aguilar and the City Government of Las Pinas, Bishop Jesse Mercado, DD and the Diocese of Paranaque, St. Joseph’s Academy and The Parish of St. Joseph with major sponsors Diego Cera Organbuilders, Inc., Via Mare, Novellino, Bote Central — Serenity Coffee, San Miguel Brewery Inc., Meralco, A.O. Avanti Popolo ("Forward People!")

Avanti Popolo (

Avanti o popolo, alla riscossa
bandiera rossa s'innalzera;
bandiera rossa, bandiera rossa
bandiera rossa trionfera.

Poiche non vogliam sfruttati
ne vogliamo sfruttatori,
ci hanno detto quei signori
che la loro e liberta:
liberta d'esser padroni,
di poterci derubare,
siamo in tanti a lavorare,
sono in pochi a guadagnar.

Avanti o popolo, alla riscossa
bandiera rossa s'innalzera;
bandiera rossa, bandiera rossa
bandiera rossa trionfera.

Poiche noi vogliam la terra
che ci avete derubato
e che per troppo vi abbiam lasciato,
ci gridate malfattori!
Ma le fabbriche potenti
che vi abbiamo costruito,
che ci hanno imprigionato,
ora noi vogliam guidar.

Vogliam le fabbriche, vogliam la terra
e non piu guerra ma liberta,
e non piu guerra, e non piu guerra,
e non piu guerra ma liberta.

(Testo di Gualtiero Bertelli, 1976)

DAY 17

Altitude: 3, 505 m / 11, 499 ft.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inside the chapel we encounter a young and friendly monk who takes the initiative to explain things and answer our quaries.

To the right, on a wooden pole there is a flat drum or phyed-rnga as known in Tibetan, a beam of light reveals the brightly painted motif on the side, a handle on the rear and a wooden pellet to strike and emit a sound.

I ask the monk,“Lamaji, what is the sound like when the drum is played?”

“Try it yourself, but be careful and do play it very softly as the time is not appropriate for music,” he replies.

It makes a hollow ‘tak, tak’ noise, which is not the actual sound when played right, the monk smiles indulgently at the uninitiated effort.

He explains, that the drum is made of two shallow wooden bowls joined at their bases; the two open sides are then covered with processed skin. A heavy woven strip of fabric is tied around the drum; two cords are attached on either side, with a handle and pellet at each end to produce the sound. The pellet can be made of wood or human bones.

Ritual monastery music involves use of both instrumental music and chanting. Though the musical practices of the various sects of Tibetan Buddhism are different, there are general similarities. During the five daily assemblies in the monastery temple, monks can be seen sitting cross-legged in rows facing each other, chanting and playing instruments. The standard chant texts are drawn from the sacred scriptures and the music of the service proceeds under the direction of the chant leader.

During the training period, novice monks are allowed to refer to the scroll-like musical score of the chanting written in a way as to produce different styles and techniques of timber and other features. The syllables of the text are written under these signs and sometimes indicate the method or pitch of playing the instruments as well. This type of notation is extremely ancient and different monasteries may have slightly varying forms of it.

During the chantings, the instruments and voices may be rhythmically independent of each other or may coincide and proceed together. The choral chant and the heavy use of drones are often ascribed to Indian influence.
