Bridesmaid's bouquet

Bridesmaid's bouquet

There were only three unmarried ladies for the bouquet toss, and I wound up catching it on the second toss. The first time it went over our heads and into the pool. I at least thought that was pretty appropriate, but we were made to re-do it.

I didn't take the bouquet with me because I knew I'd be annoyed to carry it around while traveling.

I loved this bridesmaid's bouquet at the winter wedding--it had to be very economical, but it was beautiful and unique--the white fluffy stuff had glitter and sparkled perfectly for that winter night!

Purple Passion, Purple & Blue Iris Flower Petals in a Fractal Art shape of a Heart of Love

Here's another fractal art piece I created with an Iris flower with petals of blue and purple. I figured rather than deleting these images, I'd provide them for free download. Who knows, someone may find a use. This is the sexiest flower of love to me. I like the symbolism of the detail in the petals of the iris in this fractal creation, the labia of the flower or the lip of the corolla of a labiate flower.

Pond Cypress Tree

Pond Cypress Tree

Smith College, Northampton, MA, USA.... across the entire campus are innumerable rare and specimen plants, flowers, and trees !

"Taxodium (pronounced /t?k?so?di?m/)[2] is a genus of one to three species (depending on taxonomic opinion) of extremely flood-tolerant conifers in the cypress family, Cupressaceae. The name is derived from the Latin word taxus, meaning "yew," and the Greek word ????? (eidos), meaning "similar to."[3] Within the family, Taxodium is most closely related to Chinese Swamp Cypress (Glyptostrobus pensilis) and Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica).

Species of Taxodium occur in the southern part of the North American continent and are deciduous in the north and semi-evergreen to evergreen in the south. They are large trees, reaching 100–150 ft (30–46 m) tall and 2–3 m (6.6–9.8 ft) (exceptionally 11 m/36 ft) trunk diameter. The needle-like leaves, 0.5–2 cm (0.20–0.79 in) long, are borne spirally on the shoots, twisted at the base so as to appear in two flat rows on either side of the shoot. The cones are globose, 2–3.5 cm (0.79–1.4 in) diameter, with 10-25 scales, each scale with 1-2 seeds; they are mature in 7-9 months after pollination, when they disintegrate to release the seeds. The male (pollen) cones are produced in pendulous racemes, and shed their pollen in early spring.

The trees are especially prized for their wood, of which the heartwood is extremely rot and termite resistant. The heartwood contains a sesquiterpene called cypressene,[4] which acts as a natural preservative. It takes decades for cypressene to accumulate in the wood, so lumber taken from old-growth trees is more rot resistant than that from second-growth trees.[5] However, age also increases susceptibility to Pecky Rot fungus (Stereum taxodii), which attacks the heartwood and causes some damaged trees to become hollow and thus useless for timber. Bald Cypress wood was much used in former days in the southeastern United States for roof shingles.[6] The shredded bark of these trees is used as a mulch, although the current harvest rate for this product is unsustainable and is causing substantial environmental damage especially in the south where cutting boundaries are not being followed." wikipedia.org

Airport Lore: The Animal Council (by Bill Stewart, ceramist). Rochester, NY, USA

Airport Lore: The Animal Council (by Bill Stewart, ceramist). Rochester, NY, USA

In 1788 a large part of what is today western New York State came into European hands through the Phelps and Gorham Treaty with the Five Nation Iroquois Indian Alliance (which had been established around 1450). A small tract of land procured from the Senecas was given to a former ‘Tory’ soldier, Ebenezer Allan (or Allen), who became known as ‘Indian’ Allan because of his close relationship to the native Americans. Allan established a grist mill on the Genesee River, which is the origin of the city of Rochester.
The pictured ceramic sculpture is by the well-known sculptor and artist Bill Stewart. Part of the reconstruction of the airport in the 1990s, it is called ‘The Council”, and it is connected closely to the renewed interest in the place of Native Americans in the history of the USA and in this case in particular of western New York State. Much of this history is unknown or undocumented, and a great deal of lore has developed. Hence perhaps the inscriptions of this intriguing sculpture are from rather far afield. Engraved in the black marble is an Inuit Hunting Song:

“In the very earliest time/ When both people and animals lived on earth/ A person could become an animal if he wanted to/ And an animal could become a human being/ Sometimes they were people/ and sometimes animals/ And there was no difference/ All spoke the same language.”

The second inscription is a quotation from an alleged letter of the famous Suquamish chief Seattle (or Sealth) (c.1786-1866) of what is now the state of Washington in 1855 to president Franklin Pierce (1804-1869):

“What are human beings without animals?/ If all the animals ceased to exist/ human beings would die of a great loneliness. For whatever happens to the animals / would happen soon also to human beings. All things connect.”

It is whispered that the animals of this sculpture in the dead of the night have been known to roam freely through the unpeopled airport. It is indeed abandoned in the late evening – as I saw last night – and these whisperings may well be true…

Tomatoes on the Vine

Tomatoes on the Vine

Fresh Tomatoes on the Vine - these were succulent and delicious!

SOME INFORMATION ON THE TOMATO:

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a plant in the Solanaceae or nightshade family, as are its close cousins tobacco, chili peppers, potato, and eggplant. The tomato is native to Central, South, and southern North America from Mexico to Argentina. It is a perennial, often grown outdoors in temperate climates as an annual, typically reaching to 1–3 m (3 to 10 ft) in height, with a weak, woody stem that often vines over other plants. The leaves are 10–25 cm long, odd pinnate, with 5–9 leaflets on petioles[1], each leaflet up to 8 cm long, with a serrated margin; both the stem and leaves are densely glandular-hairy. The flowers are 1–2 cm across, yellow, with five pointed lobes on the corolla; they are borne in a cyme of 3–12 together.

The word tomato derives from a word in the Nahuatl language, tomatl. The specific name, lycopersicum, means "wolf-peach" (compare the related species S. lycocarpum, whose scientific name means "wolf-fruit", common name "wolf-apple").

The tomato is grown worldwide for its edible fruits, with thousands of cultivars having been selected with varying fruit types, and for optimum growth in differing growing conditions. Cultivated tomatoes vary in size from cherry tomatoes, about the same 1–2 cm size as the wild tomato, up to beefsteak tomatoes 10 cm or more in diameter. The most widely grown commercial tomatoes tend to be in the 5–6 cm diameter range. Most cultivars produce red fruit; but a number of cultivars with yellow, orange, pink, purple, green, or white fruit are also available. Multicolored and striped fruit can also be quite striking. Tomatoes grown for canning are often elongated, 7–9 cm long and 4–5 cm diameter; they are known as plum tomatoes.

Tomatoes are one of the most common garden fruits in the United States and, along with zucchini, have a reputation for outproducing the needs of the grower.

Georgia O'Keefe and the Calla Lily in American Art, 1860-1940

Georgia O'Keefe and the Calla Lily in American Art, 1860-1940

During the second half of the 19th century, the exotic South African calla lily was introduced in the United States, and it began to appear as a subject in American art. The flower became even more popular with artists after Freud provided a sexual interpretation of its form that added new levels of meaning to depictions of it. The calla lily soon became a recurring motif in works by important painters and photographers, particularly Georgia O'Keeffe, who depicted the flower so many times and in such provocative ways that by the early 1930s she became known as "the lady of the lilies". This volume features 54 paintings, photographs and drawings of the calla lily dating from the 1860s to 1940. It includes nine of O'Keeffe's most renowned paintings of the flower as well as works by Imogen Cunningham, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, John La Farge, Man Ray, Joseph Stella and Edward Weston. There is an introduction by O'Keeffe scholar Barbara Buhler Lynes and essays on various aspects of the flower in American art by Charles C. Eldredge and James Moore.

Have A Happy Earth Day ....

Have A Happy Earth Day ....

How the First Earth Day Came About
By Senator Gaylord Nelson, Founder of Earth Day

What was the purpose of Earth Day? How did it start? These are the questions I am most frequently asked.

Actually, the idea for Earth Day evolved over a period of seven years starting in 1962. For several years, it had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country. Finally, in November 1962, an idea occurred to me that was, I thought, a virtual cinch to put the environment into the political "limelight" once and for all. The idea was to persuade President Kennedy to give visibility to this issue by going on a national conservation tour. I flew to Washington to discuss the proposal with Attorney General Robert Kennedy, who liked the idea. So did the President. The President began his five-day, eleven-state conservation tour in September 1963. For many reasons the tour did not succeed in putting the issue onto the national political agenda. However, it was the germ of the idea that ultimately flowered into Earth Day.

I continued to speak on environmental issues to a variety of audiences in some twenty-five states. All across the country, evidence of environmental degradation was appearing everywhere, and everyone noticed except the political establishment. The environmental issue simply was not to be found on the nation's political agenda. The people were concerned, but the politicians were not.

After President Kennedy's tour, I still hoped for some idea that would thrust the environment into the political mainstream. Six years would pass before the idea that became Earth Day occurred to me while on a conservation speaking tour out West in the summer of 1969. At the time, anti-Vietnam War demonstrations, called "teach-ins," had spread to college campuses all across the nation. Suddenly, the idea occurred to me - why not organize a huge grassroots protest over what was happening to our environment?

I was satisfied that if we could tap into the environmental concerns of the general public and infuse the student anti-war energy into the environmental cause, we could generate a demonstration that would force this issue onto the political agenda. It was a big gamble, but worth a try.

At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, I announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air - and they did so with spectacular exuberance. For the next four months, two members of my Senate staff, Linda Billings and John Heritage, managed Earth Day affairs out of my Senate office.

Five months before Earth Day, on Sunday, November 30, 1969, The New York Times carried a lengthy article by Gladwin Hill reporting on the astonishing proliferation of environmental events:

"Rising concern about the environmental crisis is sweeping the nation's campuses with an intensity that may be on its way to eclipsing student discontent over the war in Vietnam...a national day of observance of environmental problems...is being planned for next spring...when a nationwide environmental 'teach-in'...coordinated from the office of Senator Gaylord Nelson is planned...."

It was obvious that we were headed for a spectacular success on Earth Day. It was also obvious that grassroots activities had ballooned beyond the capacity of my U.S. Senate office staff to keep up with the telephone calls, paper work, inquiries, etc. In mid-January, three months before Earth Day, John Gardner, Founder of Common Cause, provided temporary space for a Washington, D.C. headquarters. I staffed the office with college students and selected Denis Hayes as coordinator of activities.

Earth Day worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. We had neither the time nor resources to organize 20 million demonstrators and the thousands of schools and local communities that participated. That was the remarkable thing about Earth Day. It organized itself.

Every thursday at work (mindfull)

Every thursday I take a ten minute walk from the train station to the office. And every thursday I pick a bunch of wild flowers.
I get some interesting conversations with my collegues these days. They can't get over how many different flowers I find each week that they completely seem to have overlooked.

Many thanks to Joann and Sue for dropping me a line! Joann, what an incredible shot of the unfolding poppy flower. It's amazing how those tissue petals open once that furry cap falls off. Sue, that's a lovely bouquet of tulips and thanks, too for the three postcards that came tucked in the card. It's great seeing places around Michigan and places you've visited.

front garden

front garden

A view of the garden I'm putting in at the front of the house and the new sidewalk. We had the sidewalk made of paving stones rather than concrete, and it curves through the trees. The old one was concrete, straight lines, and was dangerous at night because trees had pushed segments of it up several inches. The pink verbena at the lower right is a new color I saw this weekend at the garden store, and those mustards are also something I noticed for the first time. I'm going to buy a couple more of those and the verbena.

I'm not doing much work in the back garden yet. I'm waiting to see how the stuff I put in last year is doing. Because of our unusually cold and overcast winter, my plants from last year have been slow coming back and the seeds broadcast by some of them were late germinating. I don't want to weed them until I'm sure that I'm pulling out weeds, not my new crop of cleome and echinacea. Actually, I have a really nice looking patch of new echinacea (cone flower) plants and a lot of happy looking lilies and salvia. I can't find much cleome coming up, and a couple of the large perenials are looking seriously dead. I'm hoping for sudden life from the roots.

Fun Downtown

Fun Downtown

Purple sweater- Emily, Brown sweater- Brenna, Pink sweater- Tori, Dress and red shoes- Me. :)

Officially HATES Flickr randomly choosing the title image....It's really an awesome video, people!!!

Oh. my. word. This was the most fun I've had in a looooooooooonnnnnnnnng time. So. I got a call from Brenna at, like, 11am. She wanted me to meet them downtown at Bronson park at 2:30 to spend the afternoon with Emily and Tori. I said yes so fast!
I rode my bike and met Emily at Bronson Park a little after 2:30. We waited around for Brenna for a while, but she eventually showed up before too long. Turns out her mom dropped her off at Arcadia Park about 2 or 3 blocks northeast of Bronson Park. Brenna told us that Irish Fest was happening at Arcadia Park while she was there, so we decided to walk to Arcadia to check it out. (Brenna really got her exercise that day.)
So we three walked to Arcadia and met up with Tori there. Irish Fest was sweet!! Lots of people wearing green, men in kilts (which I know is technically Scottish, but there was alot of "Celtic" stuff there as well), shamrocks, Celtic/Irish dancing, tea and scones, Celtic calligraphy, Irish trinket-y souvenirs, highland music, and beer.
After we had enough of Irish Fest, we walked one block east to Water Street Coffee Joint. The building used to be an old railway depot, so you can imagine how cute it is.
:] It was pretty cold outside, and when it's cold, there's nothing like stepping inside a warm coffee house....mmmm. Inside there was bouquets of fresh flowers for sale which we though were really pretty. Until we came across an unidentifiable....something...in some of the bouquets. We (well, I,) described it as a pouffy-spikey ball. That's basically what it was too. I didn't have any money, so I had no coffee, but I recommended my favorite drink to Emily: The Sleeping Bear Chocolate (with whipped cream, of course).....Yuuuuummmmmm.... Tori got spiced Apple Cider, and Brenna got... water. *Rolls eyes.* So we sat down with our beverages and I noticed that I recognized a guy sitting across from our table. It took me forever to figure it out, but finally I did! And I even knew his name too! "Woah," right?! Andrew Kohler. The conductor of the Kalamazoo Junior Symphony Orchestra. He's the closest thing I have to a celebrity crush... :} I had an audition with him in May. So across from us, it appeared that he was on a date....with a lady!! *teehee* I didn't say "hello" or anything.... I just inconspicuously took pictures of him and her as they sipped their whatevers. hahaha (Thank goodness they didn't notice.) :}
So after that we headed across the street to this cool wooden-lookin' building. So we hung out there and took pictures of each other. When we were getting ready to walk back to Bronson Park, the trolley (we have a trolley in town) pulls up and I say, "There's wedding people inside!" So, being a teenager, I think of being married alot. Okay *cough* well not ALOT, but, ...oh never mind. So all three of us (Tori is married) see the bride and groom get out with their bride- and grooms-peoples and the photographer. So we figured that was a good time to leave since they were showing up. As we left, we walked behind the trolley, and there was a "just married" banner hung on the back! Ah, it was great!
So then we walked back to Bronson Park about 4:30ish. Tori and Emily were going to get picked up by Tori's hubby Peter, but Peter teaches guitar and his lesson didn't get done until 5:30. So........we hung out there. For a while.
But as you can see, we had a blast! :)

Bouquet Sou token 1830s

Bouquet Sou token 1830s

The chonic shortage of small coins during the first half of the 19th century gave rise to a series of attractive copper tokens known as "bouquet sous" in 1835 the Governor of lower Canada granted the bank of Montreal the authoity to issue copper tokens of good weight to meet the need for small change.. The front side of the tokens showed a bouquet of roses, thishles, shamrocks and wheat. The reverse carried the denomination, "Un Sou" hence the name "bouquet sous" In 1836 the Bank of Montreal was permitted to add it's name to the legend on the reverse. in 1837 La Banque du Peuple was authorized to issue "bouquet sous". These tokens became so popular the many lightweight imitations in both copper and brass were soon put into circulation by unscrupulous individuals. The genuine tokens were manufactured in England and in the United States but the counterfeit pieces were strictly a Canadian product. Altogether there are over 50 varieties of these tokens, several, both genuine and counterfeit, showing the denomination in the very ungrammatical form of "Un Sous". Since these tokens were produced in England this was obviously the work of a non-bilingual die cutter.

This token was dug in Houston TX. in the late 90s
