Middle Amana From a trip in 09 to Amana Colony, Iowa. Taken with my P&S at the time. Amana Colony is a very charming place to visit, but it is somewhat commercialized for the tourist dollar. There were some great shops though, and the quilt shop was to die for! That was in an old granery building. There are out-of-the way places too, with wonderful houses in the saltbox style. The whole colony is very interesting history. I need to go back and revisit with my Nikon! MG 4214 SZARLOTKA (Polish apple crumble) -About 1 kg apples (around 5). I prefer the Granny Smith acid kind. -2 eggs -2 and 1/2 glasses of (bakery) flour. -250gr. butter. -Cinnamon (ground) -Cardamom (ground) -1 teaspoon of yeast/baking powder (full) -1 or half a glass of powdered brown sugar (or caster sugar). -Salt Note: Sugar and cardamom can be powdered with a blender. Separate eggs’s whites from yolks. Keep whites in the refrigerator, with a pinch of salt. Melt 200gr butter slowly in a pan (with a slight pinch of salt). Mix with flour, half a glass of powdered sugar, a full teaspoon of yeast/baking powder, and yolks. You must get a plastic dough suitable to work with, if it’s not the case, add one more yolk, butter or flour. (It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a little extra dough). When dough is ready, store it in the fridge. Peel and grate apples. Mix with cardamom and cinnamon and maybe a half glass more of powdered sugar. Grease an ovenproof dish with butter and powder it with flour. Cover the bottom and the sides with dough, sparing a ball. Put the ball in the freezer for a couple of minutes. Beat whites until stiff. Fill in the dough bed with the apples mixed with the whites. When everything is ready, grate the rest of the dough on top of it. Bake at 160ş-170şC for some more than an hour (depending on the oven). (Or so taught me Agnieszka to do). Fall Cheese Platter Recipe Cranberry-Apple Chutney: 2 medium apples, chopped (2 cups) 2 cups cranberries 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped (1 cup) 1 small onion, finely chopped (1/4 cup) 3/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup golden raisins 1/2 cup white vinegar 1 1/2 teaspoons finely chopped gingerroot 1 clove garlic, finely chopped Cheese Platter: 16 slices (1 oz each) assorted cheeses, such as Cheddar, Colby-Monterey Jack, Monterey Jack with jalapeńo peppers and Swiss 1/4 cup hazelnuts, (filberts) Crackers Directions: 1. In 2-quart saucepan, mix all chutney ingredients. Heat to boiling, stirring frequently; reduce heat. Simmer uncovered about 1 hour, stirring frequently, until mixture thickens and fruit is tender. Spoon into nonaluminum container. Store in refrigerator up to 2 weeks. 2. Cut cheese with 1-, 1 1/2- and 2-inch leaf-shaped cookie cutters. Place cheese on medium platter, overlapping leaves. Sprinkle hazelnuts on platter to look like acorns. Serve with chutney and crackers. And you know me by now, I promised even four years ago to show MY independence… no more conventional “politics as usual”. And we are doing well! My administration's accomplishments speak for themselves. We work tirelessly for Alaskans. We aggressively and responsibly develop our resources because they were created to be used to better our world... to HELP people... and we protect the environment and Alaskans (the resource owners) foremost with our policies. Here’s some of the things we’ve done: We created a petroleum integrity office to oversee safe development. We held the line FOR Alaskans on Point Thomson – and finally for the first time in decades – they’re drilling for oil and gas. We have AGIA, the gasline project – a massive bi-partisan victory (the vote was 58 to 1!) – also succeeding as intended - protecting Alaskans as our clean natural gas will flow to energize us, and America, through a competitive, pro-private sector project. This is the largest private sector energy project, ever. THIS is energy independence. And ACES – another bipartisan effort – is working as intended and industry is publicly acknowledging its success. Our new oil and gas “clear and equitable formula” is so Alaskans will no longer be taken advantage of. ACES incentivizes NEW exploration and development and JOBS that were previously not going to happen with a monopolized North Slope oil basin. We cleaned up previously accepted unethical actions; we ushered in bi-partisan Ethics Reform. We also slowed the rate of government growth, we worked with the Legislature to save billions of dollars for the future, and I made no lobbyist friends with my hundreds of millions of dollars in budget vetoes... but living beyond our means today is irresponsible for tomorrow. We took government out of the dairy business and put it back into private-sector hands – where it should be. We provided unprecedented support for education initiatives, and with the right leadership, finally filled long-vacant public safety positions. We built a sub-Cabinet on Climate Change and took heat from Outside special interests for our biologically-sound wildlife management for abundance. We broke ground on the new prison. Some of those dollars would h Variegated Meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum) Live (!) scans of an anesthetized dragonfly. I'm trying a new technique I saw in a book. Since dragonflies lose their color very quickly after death, it's very hard to take anatomically-useful photos of dragonflies that show their living colors. This technique sounds a bit cruel, but I was impressed with how it worked -- this dragonfly revived nicely. 1. Catch a dragonfly. 2. Chill the dragonfly in the refrigerator for 10 minutes or so. 3. Transfer the dragonfly to a Ziploc bag. Fill the bag with gas from a "dust-off" compressed gas can (the stuff I used contained diflouroethane). 4. In five minutes or so, the dragonfly will be unconscious but still alive. 5. Scan the dragonfly, using a mouse-pad with a rectangular hole cut into it to avoid squishing the insect. 6. Allow the insect to recover, then release (or kill if the specimen is to be preserved). The method seems to have worked -- the dragonfly was alive in these scans. Its colors were accurate "life" colors. Here is the bugaboo for this shot: What the heck happened with the weird chromatic aberation around the dragonfly's abdomen? Weird. I'm not sure that my scanner has enough depth of focus for this sort of work (there are some out of focus areas in the wings). Dragonfly-entomologists use this technique outdoors, with a generator, laptop, scanner, and chilling table. He built all of the lower cabinets by hand and I painted them white. We bought the counter top sections and the upper cabinets from our local home supply store. We laid the checkerboard floor ourselves.One corner is for my computer (digital darkroom) and the opposite corner is where the studio portion is. Refrigerator Cookie Dough Recipes
Chocolate Mint Cookie Recipe I decided to make some yummy shaped chocolate dipped mint cookies. These cookies are soft, not crunchy -- though you can easily make them crunchy by letting them cook for a bit longer than normal. I made these for my sister, roommates and other random frineds -- they all loved them! Here is the recipe: Chocolate Covered Chocolate Mint Cookies Makes about 30 cookies For the cookies: 3 Tbsp butter 1 egg white 1/4 cup packed brown sugar pinch of Baking Soda (1/16 of a tsp, but if you get more it is ok) 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 cup cocoa powder 1/2 cup flour (plus 1/4 cup) 2 drops pure peppermint or mint oil (If using mint or peppermint extract it'll be more than this amount, as the extract is not as concentrated as the oil) Directions: 1. Combine all ingredients together. Add the extra 1/4 cup flour as needed, until dough is roll-able and not sticky at all. 2. Flour the surface of a clean counter and use a rolling pin to roll the dough very thin. Use a cookie cutter to cut rolled dough into desired shapes. 3. Bake at 325 F for 4-7 minutes on a greased cookie sheet, or until cookies have firmed. For crunchier cookies let them cook a bit longer. Remove from oven and cool completely. Mint Buttercream Layer: 2 cup packed powdered sugar 4 Tbsp melted butter 2-3 drops pure peppermint oil (again you will need more if using extract instead of oil) 1/2 tsp. milk Directions: 1. Mix ingredients together (with a spoon, and then by hand, it is easier) until frosting dough becomes thick, you may need more powdered sugar. 2. Spread powered sugar on a clean counter top and use a rolling pin to roll out that frosting-dough. You want the mint dough to be somewhere around 1/43 thick, but if you make it thinner it will still be great! 3. Use the same cookie cutter that you used to cut the cookies, and cut the frosting-dough into your chosen shape(s). 4. Place the cut frosting on top of cooled cookies. Now you need to melt chocolate for dipping. Many people fear melting/dipping things in chocolate -- but I know a fool-proof way, just follow the instructions below. 1. Get milk chocolate chips, or unwrap a couple handfuls of Hershey kisses. Place the chocolate into microwave-safe glass bowl. 2. Heat the chocolate for about 1 min, in the microwave and then stir. Continue to heat for 30 second intervals until you can stir out all the chunks. Do not get ANY amount of water in the chocolate, and do not overcook. 3. Now you are ready to dip your cookies. Note that there is no added butter, or sugar to the chocolate, it is not needed. You can also use the easy melt-away chocolates that you can get from your local baking store. 4. The easiest way to dip the cookies is to not dip them at all. Simply spoon chocolate on top of the cookie, and use the bottom of the spoon to spread around the cookie top and sides. Allow cookies to dry on a piece of parchment paper, foil, or plastic wrap also works. Place cookies in the refrigerator, or freezer to let the chocolate set. Enjoy! Homemade Cookie Dough Blizzard It's been a loooong time since I've had a chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard from Dairy Queen. So I made my own. A commenter has requested the recipe... I don't have exact measurements, but it's about 1/4 cup milk, about 3 tablespoons chocolate syrup, about 2 cups (maybe a bit more) ice cream, blended until smooth in a blender. It should be very thick - if not add more ice cream. Taste it too and see if you might want more chocolate syrup. Stir in balls of cookie dough with a spoon (don't blend or you'll break up the dough). This will make enough to fill a tall glass, not sure exactly how many cups. As for the cookie dough, it is an eggless dough and therefore is safe to eat raw. The recipe is Ingredients 1/4 cup butter, softened 1/4 cup brown sugar, plus 2 tbsp 2 tsp water 1/2 tsp vanilla 1/2 cup flour 1/4 tsp salt 1/3 cup miniature chocolate chips Method Cream the butter and brown sugar in a small bowl. Add water and vanilla and mix well. Add flour and salt and stir to combine. Stir in 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips. Roll into tiny balls (I used an even 1/4 teaspoon to measure) and refrigerate until firm - 1 or 2 hours.
