day 47: G is for Guitar

day 47: G is for Guitar

wow. i had such a busy day.. and this shot is the best i've got for today.. :/ not exactly what i wanted, but good enough. i may do a re-do of this idea on a day when i have more time.

my all time favorite song with mostly guitar is Jimmy Hendrix's "Little Wing (acoustic)" love it. I'm not one of those chicks that's all into classic rock and stuff, but i just really love that song.

today was my first day at art class.. im taking advanced drawing.. fun stuff. i also went to my boyfriend's all-county concert. he's a tuba player and he freakin' rocks. and then i saw the pink panther with my dad. steve martin is cute, but you can never really re-make the greatness of the original pink panther series.

goodnight!

PS- i apologize for the smallness of this photo.. there was a little problem.. i wasn't using my camera and stuff so.. i'm sorry!

image: Same Old Moon (bass clarinet part, scanned).

OK, it's been a tough week for the project. Tuesday and Wednesday: nothing, no playing, no images. That's life, and i'm going to have to get used to it sometimes.

Instead of practicing tonight, i decided to transpose a bass clarinet part for an old song from 1905 called Same Old Moon. Uncle Shoe is recording it and wants me to play bass clarinet on it. I've got to get to practicing the part and time's a-wasting...

And hey, it's music, and it's kinda like drawing.

sound: nothing, nada.

Stages in making a copy of a 17th century Antonio Brenzi viola.

Stages in making a copy of a 17th century Antonio Brenzi viola.

Much of our work at Hansell Violins is devoted to the making of copies for prominent musicians. Antonio Brenzi was an early Bolognese maker. His known instruments are very rare indeed but the sounds of the two violas that I know are exceptionally winning; one viola is played in the London Symphony Orchestra and the other by soloist Lawrence Power. The copy, shown here in stages from its nascence to completion, is based on the example made around 1628 but altered, as so many instruments were, at some point in its history.

The original instrument has a central stave or strip in the belly which may indicate a 'bent section' which would tie it to the tradition of viol making. We created our instrument in the same way in search of the naturally resonant and warm sound. This stage of the making can be seen in the photographs where a bent section is glued between two parts that will subsequently be carved.

Decisions, decisions...

Decisions, decisions...

Featured are two violas, the one on the left is worth ?1,000 and the one of the right worth ?400. I am supposed to be making a decision about which I wish to buy... However, I don't really have a spare ?1,000 (funnily enough, I favour the tone and the shape, etc), and thus I will be returning from my violin lesson empty handed today (aside from violin, obviously!).

Anyway, for w/r...
