- large feline of forests in most of Asia having a tawny coat with black stripes; endangered
- A very large solitary cat with a yellow-brown coat striped with black, native to the forests of Asia but becoming increasingly rare
- Used to refer to someone fierce, determined, or ambitious
- Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam: a terrorist organization in Sri Lanka that began in 1970 as a student protest over the limited university access for Tamil students; currently seeks to establish an independent Tamil state called Eelam; relies on guerilla strategy including terrorist tactics
Jusepe de Ribera
At first glance, I liked the art piece. I thought the artist, Jusepe de Ribera, created a life like drawing; real to the fact that his subjects were proportionally correct and everything is structured. It made me feel that the artist knew what he was doing.
Because this is an etching, extensive lines are used, many of it make shadows and even develop an idea of depth. Long and short line are also used, as well as dark and light lines, thick and light lines. The artist used darker, thicker lines around the knee area, which is pointing out and demonstrates that its closer to the viewer. He also does a good job blending the background as it is further, yet still making sense of it. The artist provides lines that shape Saint Jerome’s figure and posture. The line on his back and shoulder are lighter than the lines on his knees, which tells us that his back is certainly farther from the viewer. Even further away, seen in the background which appears to be rocky landscape has thinner lines, and appears even to have gaps. The artist also provide lines that tell us the rock his scroll sits on is flat, likely to be almost smooth. The artist demonstrates great work of line usage on the drape, shows that the drape isn’t just a flat stiff cloth. Although the use of lines didn’t direct me to look at things it did help develop an idea some thing is there and where some things are flat or round
The area that caught my attention was the bottom left corner--the human skull and then darkest area: his knee and lap covered and draped with cloth and then my eyes wandered to a hidden, dark image of what appears to be a lion or tiger. Then I glanced at his face thinking that his face would reveal an emotion of some type. And then his eyes lead me to the top right corner, and immediately, I thought of heaven and angels. Ultimately, I became more interested at what Saint Jerome was looking at--the trumpet. Although I didn’t catch the trumpet at first glance it did become my main interest. I believe the trumpet is the secondary focal point. And the direction of Saint Johns, I believe is the primary focal point. I believe that the high value of contrast are strategically in place; Saint Jerome is somewhat centered, and the angel is appearing from what seems to be could or fog. I believe the dominant value of composition is the limited use of line and the amount light on Saint Jerome, plenty of line use is used else where leaving Saint Jerome open--with light.
The drawing is wonderful as it is. Subjects on the art piece look real; real in size, distant, shadow, depth, and curvature. I don’t dislike the drawing. The one thing that I don’t understand is the presence of the skull. The only thing I can make of it is that since he depicted an angel (atop) playing a trumpet, the skull must represent death (below). Though, you’d think that he’d be just as startle or worst reacting to the human skull as he is placing his attention to the trumpet.
Selous Lions
So a while ago, I had to accompany a documentary film maker into the Selous, south-western Tanzania, famous for being Africa’s largest game reserve. He had never been to Africa before I was told, I was asked to help him to ‘acclimatize’ to all things wild and assist him with getting the shots he wanted. There is one thing I love more than anything, and that is to see Africa again afresh through the eyes of someone for whom it is all new. The excitement and adrenalin they feel is always catching.
We’d been watching this pride of lion for a while; they lay in the cool of the shade, one male and his seven lionesses. They didn’t look comfortable and their breathing was heavy but then so was ours. It was hot and humid, typical of the Selous. They’d killed something recently, there was a fetid, sickly-sweet scent of death hanging over the scene.
But they were oh so beautiful. Intense eyes, ‘tiger tiger burning bright’. They were relaxed but they missed nothing; and they felt very very close.
It all changed very suddenly, very quickly. On our right, closing in fast, came a large herd of elephants, mothers and babies. They were cautious, watching everything, protective of their young. At first we blocked their vision – man always gets in the way of nature – but then the elephants spotted this languorous herd of felines. They were not taking any chances as in their midst was a week-old baby, small and pink and very vulnerable. One of the young bulls charged right into the midst of the lion pride, trumpeting loudly, kicking up dust, noise, commotion; the lions scattered, in every direction possible, no match for this angry herd. We were in an open game drive vehicle, felt very small, felt very ‘out there’. Turned to each other afterwards…my god have you seen that before…(slightly hysterical laughter), me no…I’ve never been that close when something like that happens, not in all my years here, I thought they were going to jump right into the car with us. Driving back to the lodge seemed somewhat sedentary after that. The film maker certainly got his footage.

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on, now
'Cause there's too many places

But, if I stayed here with you, girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
And this bird, you'll can not change
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And the bird you cannot change
And this bird you cannot change
Lord knows, I can?t change
Bye, bye, baby it's been a sweet love
Yeah, yeah
Though this feeling I can't change
But please don't take it so badly
'Cause the Lord knows
I'm to blame
But, if I stayed here with you girl
Things just couldn't be the same
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now

The Most Valuable Piece of Real Estate
There are things in life that just stick with you. Steps you take that lead to something greater, or to a fall, places you go that change you forever. This little spot, just a couple of feet wide, was one of those for me. It's a somber place, and a spot that marked the turning point of my life.
When I began coming to Aimes Park, it wasn't for photography. I was the showroom manager of a fabric store, and would take my lunch breaks there. I would sometimes drive around just to kill time, and when I found this pretty park, it became a frequent destination. Oddly, it always made me feel just a little more sober...not quite depressed, but not quite happy, either. Like looking at a breathtaking sunset alone, with no one to share it with, and feeling that almost empty longing... like it would be better if it wasn't so solitary. Aimes Park had that kind of feel to it.
When I did begin doing photography in 2006, this was one of the places I came to take photos. Even with a really cheap, poor quality pocket cam, some of the photos were beautiful, because Aimes Park was beautiful. I liked it because they replaced the flowers seasonally, and it always seemed to look different. My most memorable shoot- the one I thought had the best photos- at least until more recently, happened when I forgot my cell phone at work one day, and had to go back to get it, and decided to go ahead and drive to the park for some impromptu pics. That day yielded some photos that I've not been able to replicate, even with better cameras, and better editing know how. It was just one of those perfect days when everything comes together perfectly, and flows well.
My first paid photo shoot was also at this little park. A man saw my photos on a date site, and contacted me, not because he wanted to date me, but because he wanted to know if I could take his photos for the site, so he could find a wife! While not completely flattering on a personal level, it gave me a great deal of confidence in my new-found talent, because the man was wealthy, and could have chosen anyone to do the shoot. We met, and I had to distract him and "trick" him into smiling, as he was very self conscious in front of a camera. I took 168 photos of him, and after the edits and retouches, had about 17 that I thought really showed him at his best. I even drove to his place of business- a funeral home!- to upload them to the date site for him because he didn't know how! Turns out the man owned two or three funeral homes. He was very nice, and paid me $500 without hesitation for all my work and extra effort driving 60 miles to upload the photos. That was in February of 2007. Little did I know that this man would end up playing a big role in my life less than 2 years later.
When my mother took ill, she went down fast. COPD is not the way anyone would choose to die if they had that choice, and I was totally unprepared for what happened, since Mom had quit smoking 14 years earlier. It wasn't in time, though, and she developed emphysema. At 84, on Christmas Day, she passed, and it became very obvious to me that God's hand was in everything that happened.
While working at the fabric store, I met the head hospice nurse of Volusia County Hospice. I always treated her nice, and asked her questions, somehow knowing that one day I might need her help with my mom. When she discovered my mother was under hospice care and had been admitted to the hospital, nearly dying in respiratory failure the night before, she called me, letting me know that a bed was available in Orange City, which was 30 miles from my home. She said she could get Mom in there, and transfer her when one opened up closer to home. I agreed amidst protests from my family. Somehow, I knew this was the right thing to do. It wasn't until I followed the medical transport all the way from Ormond Beach that I realized the hospice was only about 2 or 3 miles away from where my funeral director customer's mortuary was! When hospice asked who should be called, I got on the phone with him and asked if he could handle it, and he remembered me fondly, having met a woman and married her thanks to my photos! He basically cut his price in half, and a week later, when my mother passed away, took care of everything for me, even driving to Daytona himself to bring me her ashes.
Now, back to Aimes Park. About a year before that, I was talking to a woman at the park while taking photos, (you'll see her photo in the set) and discovered she had scattered her husband's ashes over the river there, and she was there "visiting" when I met her. It was after that that I thought it would be an ideal place to be someone's final resting place.
A year after my mother died, on Christmas morning, after a rain, I brought her ashes to this spot, and released her over the river. Aimes Park will forever be a place of beauty to me, because this park was, I believe, chosen by God to be a place of comfort and provision for me, and

Honeysuckle
Honeysuckles ( syn. Caprifolium Mill.) are arching shrubs or twining vines in the family Caprifoliaceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere. There are about 180 species of honeysuckle, 100 of which occur in China; Europe, India and North America have only about 20 native species each. Widely known species include Lonicera periclymenum (European Honeysuckle or Woodbine), Lonicera japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle, White Honeysuckle, or Chinese Honeysuckle) and Lonicera sempervirens (Coral Honeysuckle, Trumpet Honeysuckle, or Woodbine Honeysuckle). Hummingbirds are attracted to these plants.
The leaves are opposite, simple oval, 1–10 cm long; most are deciduous but some are evergreen. Many of the species have sweetly-scented, bell-shaped flowers that produce a sweet, edible nectar. Breaking of the Honeysuckle's stem will release this powerful sweet odor. The fruit is a red, blue or black berry containing several seeds; in most species the berries are mildly poisonous, but a few (notably Lonicera caerulea) have edible berries. The plant is eaten by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species - see list of Lepidoptera that feed on honeysuckles.
The name Lonicera stems from Adam Lonicer, a Renaissance botanist.
Several species of Lonicera have become invasive when introduced outside their native range, particularly in New Zealand and the United States. Invasive species include L. japonica, L. maackii, L. morrowii, and L. tatarica.
Honeysuckles (genus Lonicera) Caprifoliaceae
Honeysuckles (genus Lonicera) are arching shrubs or twining vines in the family Caprifoliaceae, native to the Northern Hemisphere. There are about 180 species of honeysuckle, with by far the greatest diversity in China, where over 100 species occur; by comparison, Europe and North America have only about 20 native species each. Widely known species include Lonicera periclymenum (European Honeysuckle), Lonicera japonica (Japanese Honeysuckle, White Honeysuckle, or Chinese Honeysuckle) and Lonicera sempervirens (Coral Honeysuckle, Trumpet Honeysuckle, or Woodbine Honeysuckle).

Blues in the Night
You could hear the strains of his trumpet before we even turned the corner on to Nicholette Street in downtown Minneapolis. He had found a "stage" in an alley near one of the busy late-night corners; it even had good light to read his sheet music by, not to mention the atmosphere. Between songs, we stepped up and gave him a tip and explained that I wanted to take a few photos. We learned that his name was Kenneth and that he had been playing in several other locations for several hours, hence the apology that his "chops" weren't what they had been an hour before. He also gave me carte blanch to take as many photos as I wanted. None of them are what I would want technically but the feel of them passes muster.

Sauna Violin
Best viewed on black -
According to my dad, this violin was either made or repaired using a Finnish sauna to help bend the wood. Before seeing if the local museum is interested in taking it, I thought I would see if I could take some decent photos of it, so I played around with my new D7000 and a desk lamp for lighting. I don't normally do still life but I really enjoyed playing with the light.
As always, thoughtful feedback and suggestions are always appreciated.
Use of this photo without permission is not cool. Please contact me if you would like to use it.
classic for classic still life
The Naked Violin
Stripped of strings, scratched by a cat, and with a bow losing its hair,
This could be a sad, sad tale of silence and neglect.
But do not despair, this violin was beyond repair,
This orphan from the dump, no respect, what a shame.
So now it poses in this chair, a classic all the same,
Still just as sweet, as the songs it once played.
