Big Schloss - George Washington National Forest
On Friday night, I saw a few minutes of the D.C. metro area news. Their local weatherman said "Fall color is at absolute peak along Skyline Drive. So, if you can find the time, Saturday will be a great day to drive down through the Shenandoah Valley and see the foliage." At that point, I made a decision to go hiking in the National Forest instead of SNP.
Adam and I chose to hike along the Mill Mountain Trail to Big Schloss. It's one of the best panoramic views in the entire Shenandoah Valley. The view you're seeing here is looking into West Virginia. It was so colorful! I wish we'd gotten an earlier start on the hike. By the time we got to the top, it was 11:30 and not the best time for photos. But, I think you get the idea about how beautiful it was up there. On our way back down the mountain, the clouds rolled in quickly and the rest of Saturday ended up being mostly overcast.

OREGON HOTEL IS NOT GONE
For whatever reason I cannot remember, but I couldn't get a MATS Flight into NYC, so I hitch-hiked in from wherever I was, I can't recall at the moment. The driver let me off right in the middle of Times Square, right where I wanted to be. I had read so much about Times Square and saw so many newsreels and photos. It was a great feeling that is hard to describe. On my own, in the service, money in my pockets and about two weeks left on leave. I checked into the Oregon Hotel.
The drinking age in New York was 18 back then and I was 18. And there were so many bars. I did not bother to count them all, I just enjoyed going in and out of as many as I could. I barely recall going into my room at the Oregon Hotel in the wee hours of the morning.
Room view
We have had a few weeks to ourselves. My parents have been watching the kids during their summer break to help out with expenses, and to give the kids a bit of an adventure that I couldn't since I am working.
We have been cleaning, and painting and moving stuff around, and while we have had a few hours together here and there, nothing for ourselves.
So, we got a cheap hotel in Costa Mesa, and spent the weekend in Newport Beach... We need time to relax now and then

photo - Hotel Suisse, Nice - Room N.44
This is a bad photo but I include it to give folks an idea of the size (very small) and Spartan nature of the hotel rooms - "sleek, modern and cozy" in hotel parlance. But I still recommend the hotel for its location close to Old Nice and the Port and for its views (spring for a Privilege room in order to get a high floor and unobstructed views).
photo - Hotel Suisse, Nice
Our hotel in Nice. It has a great location (right next to Old Nice and to the Port) and most of the rooms have a fantastic view of the Bay of Angels, the beach and much of Nice. Its rooms are small and Spartan and it is not full-service (no restaurant, e.g.) but I still recommend it for one or two nights, for its location and especially for that view!

Pet-Espinho
Entretanto, o visual e a forma ficaram bastante interessantes.

Spyglass
I got up early and went for a walk around Clearwater Beach. It's changing quite a bit these days.
This is the old Spyglass motel. We never stayed there but it was always recognizable in that for years it was the tallest building on the south beach and from the large ballon painted on the eastern wall. The western wall faces the Gulf and was nothing but balconies and was always covered in fluttering beach towels that had been hung out to dry.
It's closed now and they're selling condos out of an office on the first floor. You can see the construction starting to the south (left) of the building.

Shot Details
The shot was taken in front of the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. The Pfister was built in 1893 and is a historic landmark. It houses the largest hotel collection of Victorian art and has a pretty good bacon burger at the cafe inside.
I was lucky to fire off 3 shots before any cars came flying down the street or people walking by. I wanted to have something in the foreground but now see it was bad idea as the tree branches in the upper left hand corner were moving in the wind. 1/50s is just too slow of a shutter speed for doing HDR. Brownie points for whoever could make out the movement of the branches that didnt get aligned in Photomatix.
Comments and critiques welcome.
Pfister Hotel
Briefly considered staying at this hotel until I saw the price tag. One night here would cost the same as two nights at the Howard Johnson where I'm staying.

Village Inn
After I got back onto I-295 after leaving Blanding Blvd., I was starting to feel a little bit hungry, so I got off the interstate onto San Jose Blvd. after I saw that there was a Village Inn on that exit. I stopped at the Village Inn and after I sat down, I looked at the menu and decided that just about everything cost a bit more than what I wanted to pay for lunch, so I decided to eat somewhere else later. However, I felt kind of bad for leaving Village Inn like that because it seemed to have very good customer service.
Village Inn
Seen in the late 1980s, this delightful pub sign featured local wildlife.
The Village Inn used to be part of the old Torcross Apartment Hotel but has now unfortunately gone, along with the hotel itself. Major redevelopment work is currently taking place turning the old building into (surprise, surprise!) luxury private apartments!

Phoenix Building / Phoenix Hotel - Pittsford
The centerpiece of the village of Pittsford is the Phoenix Building which has overlooked the village crossroads since its construction as a hotel in 1812. Now a bit of history: Before the current imposing ediface was built , there was an earlier frame structure / tavern on this site, as early as 1807, which served the stagecoach trade. After a fire destroyed the frame tavern, the current brick structure was then built on the site. Architecturally, this distingushed building can be classified as old Federal-style; with steeped gables, a gable fanlight, double chimney profile, and an arcade of elliptical-arch recesses over doors and windows on the first floor. By 1816 Pittsford was on the stagecoach line from Canandaigua to Rochesterville and the hotel / tavern served the Erie Canal and turnpike trade. Among the illustrious hotel guests were DeWitt Clinton, Marquis de LaFayette, Daniel Webster, and Cornelius Vanderbilt. The hotel changed ownership a number of times in its long life but always remained a tavern of sorts; it served as a hostelry for about 150 years. In 1927 it became Tyler's Inn. In 1933 it was sold again and remodeled extensively and opened as The Old Heidelbert, a Barvarian Inn. In 1942 the name was changed to the Pittsford Inn. During all of these changes there were also changes to the exterior of the building - a beautiful veranda was removed, entrances changed, chimneys removed and the exterior was painted white. In 1956, a gas station was erected obstructing the north facade ( the lease on the gas station was not renewed and the station was eventually demolished ). Two disastrous fires occurred around 1963 and the building sat empty and unused for over a year. In 1964, the late publisher, Andrew D. Wolfe of Wolfe Publications fame, purchased the building, rehabilitated it for office use and restored many of the exterior features that had been lost, including the small grass lawn facing the villages's Four Corners. Also, the tall chimneys were rebuilt and the white paint on the exterior bricks was carefully removed to restore the original appearance. Andrew Wolfe's efforts helped to launch Historic Pittsford. The Phoenix Building is now owned by Michael J. Newcomb and houses various businesses including Mitchell Pierson Realtors. It is located at 4 South Main Street in Pittsford, NY.
