Oh Cinnamon Hair Flower

A large open bloom in shades of cinnamon, burnt pink, plum and metallic red-green.
All the fabrics in this particular piece have a bit of a shine and reflect the light beautifully. The color changes a bit depending on the light, from deep red to burgundy and cinnamon.
The bloom is attached to a hair comb and can be easily attached to any hairdo. All the petals can be manipulated, depending on your hairdo, you can spread them out and have a large open bloom (aprox. 7" wide) or pull one by one in and tuck in the flower into an up-do (5"-6" wide).

Italy-25

Italy-25

***note: just a shot of one of the many sidewalk/piazza cafes where you can sit, enjoy dinner, and people watch.

Day 3
The plan for this day is a bit more laid-back. We’re grabbing a complimentary breakfast on the roof of the Marriott Grand Flora, renting a car from Avis, and driving down to Amalfi where we plan to stay for the next 3-4 days. Breakfast was a huge buffet with just about anything you could want, and it was eaten on the rooftop patio which overlooked much of Rome. To the left you can see the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica standing out clearly against the sky, while the majority of the view is of the Borghese gardens, which includes the Galleria Borghese and the Villa Medici among other things. After breakfast we went to get our rental from Avis. The reservation was set up with the Avis office at the Leonardo da Vinci airport, which would require a metro ride to the Stazione Termini, followed by a 45 minute train ride to the airport, followed by negotiating through the airport crowds to the counter, getting the car, and driving back to the hotel to finish checking out. As I walked out the front of the hotel I noticed an Avis sign and asked the bellman about it. Lo and behold there was an Avis office two blocks from the hotel! I walked down there and there were incredibly helpful, switching my reservation and hooking us up with the weekly special which included full insurance coverage (something I normally don’t bother with but will come in to play later in our trip) a newer model and unlimited mileage for less than the original reservation. As a spur of the moment decision I also added a Tom-Tom, which was the smartest thing I did the entire trip. It was worth every penny of the cost as it likely saved our marriage. Without it we’d have been lost many times and probably would’ve ended up in multiple arguments. Anyway, the vehicle they gave us was a blue 4 door Opel with a manual transmission and a 1 liter, 4 cylinder engine. That’s right, 1 liter. We left the hotel and began following the Tom-Tom’s directions to Amalfi, when I noticed something. Street signs and traffic lights were in very different locations, so much so that I ran the first traffic light I came to and nearly clipped an elderly woman about to cross the road. Needless to say she let me know I was an idiot in a very colorful way. We made our way south down to Salerno and began the drive up the coast. This was fun and nerve wracking at the same time as the road was very narrow, very windy, cut into the side of the mountains, and had many blind corners. Oh, and they were filled with scooters weaving in and out between the cars and giant tourist buses bullying their way around the hairpin turns. As we finally pulled into Amalfi Jen pulled out the reservation information. It said there was no parking at the hotel and that we should call them to find out where to park and so that they could send down the luggage service which would transport our bags to the hotel. Yeah, we didn’t have a cell phone that worked in Italy and pay phones didn’t seem to be readily available either, so we asked a traffic cop what to do. He helped us out and soon enough we parked the car in a parking garage, left our bags for the luggage service, and headed to the hotel (Residenza del Duca) which was located on the 7th floor of a historical building just off the main piazza of the village. There wasn’t an elevator, and I wouldn’t suggest this hotel to those that aren’t in some modest bit of shape. There were two days in Amalfi where we went up and down those steps enough to justify a second dessert after dinner. By the time we got settled, showered and changed into clean clothes it was time for dinner. Amalfi is a small town, and the main piazza is where everyone congregates in the evening. There are many cafes, pottery stores, and gelato shops, and the local liquor Limoncello is served and sold everywhere. It is manufactured up and down the Amalfi coast and comes in two forms, both made primarily from the local lemon crop: a clear lemon liquor, and a cream lemon liquor, both of which are quite good. Each town on the Amalfi coast claims to be the original Limoncello makers, and even the Isle of Capri lays a claim to it also. I’m not quite sure where it actually originates. As we ate at a sidewalk café and enjoyed people watching, a group of musicians came around and played several of their songs. I’m a bit of a sucker for this kind of thing, so I bought one of their CD’s. They call themselves Gypsy Orient and have 4 member: a singer (with a tambourine of course), a guy with an accordion, a guy with an acoustic guitar that had duct tape holding it together, and a bassist who played a standup bass with only 3 strings. Did I mention how much of a sucker I am? Anyway, we spent the rest of the evening relaxing and enjoying the people watching.

Adrian and Ann Wyckoff Onderdonk House

Adrian and Ann Wyckoff Onderdonk House

Vander Ende-Onderdonk House, 1820 Flushing Avenue, Ridgewood, Queens, New York City, New York, United States

The Onderdonk House, located on Flushing Avenue near the corner of Onderdonk Avenue in an industrial section of Ridgewood, is, in part, a rare surviving late-eighteenth-century Dutch- American farmhouse in the Borough of Queens, as well as one of the few houses of eighteenth- century stone construction in New York City. In particular, it is one of the city's very few eighteenth-century Dutch-American stone houses with a gambrel roof. It has associations with many early and interrelated families of settlers, mostly Dutch, of western Long Island.

Nearly demolished in 1974, the one-and-a-half-story house suffered a major fire in 1975, which destroyed most of its wooden elements. Saved through the efforts of diligent local residents, the house was reconstructed for the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society by the firm of Giorgio Cavaglieri in 1980-82, based largely on the recording of the house by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1936 and on surviving physical evidence after the fire. Despite the numerous alterations to the Onderdonk House over the last two hundred years, and its reconstruction in large part, it survives as a significant early remnant of Queens history, and a testament to the work of those neighborhood residents who recognized its worth.

The Onderdonk House is one of the very few Dutch-American houses in New York City on its original site with a substantial parcel of land and with public accessibility. Additionally, the land around the house has yielded significant archaeological resources of both prehistoric and historic periods, which have aided in the interpretation and added to the understanding of the house and the site. The site has the potential to yield additional archaeological resources in the future.

History of the Property and the House in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries'

During most of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the property associated with the Onderdonk House was part of the large "disputed territory" between the Dutch-settled town of Boswijk (Bushwick) in Kings County and the English town of Middleburgh (later Newtown) in Queens County; this conflict stemmed from conflicting grants made to Dutch and English settlers.

What is now Flushing Avenue, originally a trail used by Native Americans, was later the highway between the two towns, and this site was adjacent to the end of a branch of the English Kills section of Newtown Creek. The earliest report of habitation by a Dutch settler on the Onderdonk House tract was 1662 when Hendrick Barentse Smidt, a prosperous landowner and silversmith whose name appears in many records of New Netherland, is recorded as having a house on his property.

The land changed hands several times prior to 1709, when one hundred acres were purchased by Paulus van Ende and his wife, probably the former Jannetje Hendricks, daughter of Hendrick Ryker. Bora c. 1679 in Utrecht, the Netherlands, van Ende was a descendant on his mother's side of the van Cortlandts, and was from Flatbush at the time of the purchase. The property was inherited in 1737 by his son Hendrick, and by the latter's widow Antie Calyer van Ende in 1750.

Based on existing evidence, the house dates from about the third quarter of the eighteenth century; reference is usually made to the survey in January of 1769 that established a boundary line between Kings and Queens Counties in the Bushwick-Newtown area (placing the house in Bushwick). The report of the survey commissioners notes the house of Joseph Woodward, located northeast of the Onderdonk House site. The Annals of Newtown by James Riker (1852), however, cites one of the reference points used by the surveyor Francis Marschalk as "the northerly corner of the house, formerly the house of Frederick Van Nanda [sic], and now in possession of Moses Beegel [sic]." The former was undoubtedly Hendrick van Ende, while the latter was Moses Beadel, husband of Jannetje (Jane) van Ende, Hendrick's daughter. Beadel is thought to have been of French Huguenot descent, probably born in 1725 in Hempstead, Long Island. Recent research on the development of the timber framing and floor plans of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century

Dutch-American farmhouses indicates that the form of the house (prior to the fire and as reconstructed) would probably have a date no earlier than mid-eighteenth century. Clifford W. Zink has analyzed the timber framing of Dutch-American houses and has categorized these houses into three periods of development and seven types of framing. Based on Zink's prototypes, the Onderdonk House, with its "hybrid gambrel frame" combining Dutch anchor-bent and English box-frame elements (with the anchor bents placed at the bay intervals on the second floor), would date from the last period — the second half of the eighteenth century /first quarter of the ninetee

[A200/Tamron 18-250, either a Promaster or Hoya Pro1 Digital MC UV filter, ISO100 1/320s F8 27mm effective -0.0eV > dcraw A200 ICC H0W AHD 3-color +0.0eV > Gimp contrast +1, usm 1.0-0.50-01]

(too dark, but the clouds are nicely-rendered...though I'm afraid to read all the stuff that I wrote here :)

I'm sure that there's a valid point or two buried in the 5000 words that follow...but succinctly, what leaps out at me here is that compared to shooting film, at least so far, the images off even the A200 are "crisp" and clean even if they do have a slight CGI effect..the main problem is the wrestling that has to be done to get a good result from a raw file, if you don't trust the software to render it for you in "automatic" mode. Post-process, whatever. Render is a shorter word, easier to type so I think that I'll just use that from now on. "Render the final image". You can either do it manually (like using the flags in dcraw) or trust the software (like running dcraw with no flags).

If you just take a decent exposure at F8 or so, ISO100, with a decent subframe, run it through dcraw with maybe the -o1 -w -W -T flags, you'll get this or something close to it. Probably a little brighter. I think that I can summarize the text below just by saying that it's a lot easier & cheaper to get good shots handheld in the day at low ISO with a decent little subframe than it is to get good shots handheld in low light at any ISO with an expensive fullframe. Though maybe there are a few other "nuggets of wisdom" buried in there. I say so much, sometimes.

You still have the problem of money tied up in the camera and lens when you're not taking shots with it. Whether it's $1500 for the camera and $1k for the lens, or $300 for the camera and $300 for the lens, or just $300 for the camera and lens combined. Sure, given a dozen rolls of film you're coming out ahead. But it's still money. And as time goes by, that gear is simply going to be worth less and less eventually ending up on eBay for peanuts. You end up losing more money in the gear the longer that you have it, which swings the financial balance back towards film. Maybe film shots don't look quite as clean, and certainly they can be more trouble to prepare, but basically they're the same shots. With more fine-detail. But sure I can't pop a roll of ISO800 film in a film camera and shoot it handheld in low light without a flash unless the lens has IS and that makes this a different issue because now I need to buy an expensive IS lens as well, just for the handful of lowlight or long shots that I might ever want to shoot and now I'm just saving money on the camera-body and taken all together that again makes a cheap subframe look like a decent deal, at least for shots in good light at low ISO. Film is just a lot harder to shoot and get good results with than digital. The question is, just how much are the shots worth to you...and how good are you with film?

With film you can now buy a decent SLR cheap, literally for under $50 on eBay, and shoot film in it for about $5/roll. That's $15 for 100 shots, sure. But just how many shots are you going to take? There is simply no sense in getting the worlds' best camera-gear, getting great results with it...and then hardly shooting it. You can't shoot it if all your money is tied up in it. Yes it's not worth shooting if the results aren't good enough but the main issue is to find a happy medium between cost and quality. A camera that you can afford to buy, keep and take out shooting, that gives you results that you enjoy viewing. Not just one or the other. This is not nearly as easy as it seems. Even this A200/Tamron 18-250 rig cost me $800, and I could only stand the results out of it at ISO200 or below during the day and ISO400 in low light. Maybe ISO800 in a pinch. Most of the time it just sat in my bag and I ended-up selling the camera and lens on eBay for $200 each. 3 months later. The lens lost 60% of the retail value over the summer. It was selling brand-new for 50% less than I paid for a used one, and I paid less for one on Amazon than they were selling for on eBay. That lens retailed for $500 earlier this summer. Amazon is crushing the retail market for electronics gear by allowing people to sell their used gear on it at a fixed price and brokering the sale. You can get slightly-used gear well off the retail price with all the guarantees of a regular Amazon buy. You aren't happy with the gear, the seller doesn't get paid. The same thing that eBay is trying to do, but eBay isn't brokering the sale unless you pay with paypal. Amazon takes regular credit-cards as well as paypal. Plus eBay is, well, you know: "eBay". Like CraigsList, it just has a reputation from all the people that have gotten screwed on eBay over the years.

So prices are low on eBay but that goes along with the risk of buying goods on eBay.
There is virtually no risk when buying through Amaz

Pont du Gard -- sign - No stepping on the monument

Pont du Gard -- sign - No stepping on the monument

This is the Pont du Gard, a famous Roman Aqueduct on the Gardon River in France.

This monumental structure spanning the Gardon River valley is 275 metres long, 49 metres high, 6 metres wide at the base, 3 metres wide at the top and has a total of fifty three arches. It is only one part of a fifty kilometre aqueduct which supplied Roman Nimes with fresh water. It is estimated to have carried twenty thousand cubic metres per day.

It was built using six-ton stone blocks, coloured a delicate shade of pink, laid dry, and is a technological and aesthetic masterpiece.

Through poor maintenance, the aqueduct gradually became unusable in the 9th Century.

But the many times restored Pont du Gard, still remains its haughty air even after nearly two thousand years.

From a tourist book on La Provence (English version)

Begun around 19 BC, this bridge is part of an aqueduct which transported water from a spring near Uzes to Roman Nimes. An underground channel, bridges and tunnels were engineered to carry the 20 million litre (4.4 million gallon) daily water supply 50 km (31 miles).

The three-tiered structure of the Pont du Gard spans the Gardon valley and was the tallest aqueduct in the Roman empire.

Its huge limestone blocks, some as heavy as 6 tonnes, were erected without mortar. The water channel covered by stone slabs, was in the top tier of the three. Skillfully designed cutwaters ensured that the bridge has resisted many violent floods.

It is not known for certain how long the aqueduct continued in use but it may still have been functioning as late as the 9th century AD.

The adjacent road bridge was erected in the 1700s.

Taken from DK Eyewitness Travel: Provence & The Cote D'Azur

Sign on the left is like the one I found on the right side.

A sign saying No stepping on the monument. Also says Please do not climb over this parapet.

Stained Glass Window with Old Testament Stories

Stained Glass Window with Old Testament Stories

St Mary's Church, Fairford, Gloucestershire in the Cotswold. This parish church contains 28 nearly 500 years old stained glass windows, unique among English parish churches. This window is described as follows: Window 1 - The Fall, from left to right:
1. Eve stands in the act of disobedience to God, taking the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The blue serpent, with woman’s head and bust and cat’s paws offers the tempting fruit.
2. .The Burning Bush. Moses is on holy ground. The Presence of God is revealed in the Burning Bush which is not consumed as he gazes. The bush betokens the body of Mary who, although she bore the son of God, remained a virgin.
3. Gideon and the Fleece. Gideon is strengthened by the Angel of the Lord. All the ground is dry, but the fleece laid upon it is covered in dew. This also foreshadows the Incarnation and the virginity of Mary.
4. King Solomon. The gentile Queen of Sheba stands offering a precious silver casket to Solomon, the Son of David. One day the magi, three gentle kings from afar, would bring presents to him that was born to be King of the Jews.

2008 - 05 - 03 - female - detail from stained glass window

This is a detail from a stained glass window at the fabulous Smith Museum of Stained Glass, which is located (oddly) at the very touristy Navy Pier entertainment complex in Chicago. Unfortunately, I didn't take notes so I can't pin down which window this detail comes from.

I found out about the Smith Museum when I ran across photos here on flickr. It is definitely worth a trip when you're in Chicago. It has 150 windows and other pieces on display, including 13 by Louis Comfort Tiffany, which is the largest display of Tiffany windows in the world.

There are hundreds of photos from the Smith Museum on Flickr, but the collection is nevertheless not comprehensively covered since many of the pieces are difficult to photograph well due to glare or just bad light (too much or too dark). I can't find another shot of this detail on Flickr or through Google, so I can't identify it.

(I should clarify this - the light is excellent for viewing but not always good for photography. But this is a museum where there are no restrictions at all on photography, so you can try and try again.)

Bed of Charles X ~ The Louvre Paris, France

Bed of Charles X ~ The Louvre Paris, France

Bed of Charles X

Brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, Charles X ascended the throne on the death of the latter in 1824. For the Château des Tuileries, he had the woodcarver Brion produce a state bed of the same size as the bed of Louis XVIII in order to reuse its silk hangings. It is a "lit ŕ la duchesse", a canopy bed with the tester is attached to the wall and not supported by bedposts. The large and richly decorated headboard bears the arms of France, flanked by two helmets and surmounted by the crown.
Silk hangings of exceptional quality

It was the outstanding quality of the silk counterpane and hangings from the bed of Louis XVIII that ensured they were used a second time. They were woven by the house of Grands Frčres in Lyon between 1817 and 1819, after a pattern by Louis de la Hamayde de Saint-Ange (1780-1860). These sumptuous and highly decorative hangings contribute largely to the value of the state bed. The blue colour of the silk velvet was dubbed "bleu Raymond", after the chemist who invented the new process by which they were dyed. The use of royal blue marked a break with imperial red and a return to tradition.

A regal bed

Designed in the style of the "Restauration", the carved and gilded wood frame is as richly decorative as the silk hangings. The sumptuous ornamental carvings include crested helmets, flower garlands and scrolling foliage surround the central shield bearing the arms of France. The rest of the decoration makes abundant use of heraldic fleurs-de-lis, natural fleurs-de-lis and acanthus leaves. Executed, like the silks, after designs by Saint-Ange, the bed was carved by Pierre-Gaston Brion (1767-1855), cabinetmaker and woodcarver by appointment to the Royal Furniture Repository, as a replacement for the bed on which the body of Louis XVIII had been laid out after his death.

A state bed

The bed of Charles X was placed in the former bedroom of Napoleon I, on the first floor of the Château des Tuileries, in the Bullant Pavilion. Standing on a dais, it was intended as a bed for ceremonial purposes rather than for sleeping. Under the "Restauration", as under the Ancien Régime, the royal bedchamber remained a place of symbolic significance.
