My bumper and license plate hit the left front wheel of a Kia SUV that pulled out across my lane. Left front headlight cracked.

License plate holder is similarly wrinkled, but I believe both will respond well to a gently used hammer and 2x4

Ford Contour SE Sport (US) at Mt. Rushmore

In the midst of a two-week mad drive over the western states. I am at the easternmost point of the drive, Mt. Rushmore in western South Dakota.

This 1999 Contour was my first car. As I did not wish to drive another cookie-cutter Japanese sedan just like everyone else in California, I took notice at the Contour, the cheapened North American version of the highly acclaimed European-market Ford Mondeo. To maximize the European "sport" factor I chose an example with a V6 engine *and* a 5-speed manual transmission. Total cost of the vehicle was $16,100 plus tax/fees.

This car was a joy to drive, but caused me many griefs. A year before this moment, it had been involved in a severe frontal crash, and would have been scrapped had it not been for erroneous initial estimates by the body shop causing the insurer to repair, rather than replace, the vehicle. The repair was not to my liking at all, and for that matter, the build and parts quality of the Contour itself, to bring the price down for the US market, was cut-rate. Other motorists would continue to rear-end this car as if I had a "hit me!" target on the rear bumper.

I had to eventually retire the car at only 7 years and 131,000 miles. My mechanic restored the major systems and continues to drive it as his vehicle.

I was known to often refer to this car as "the Scullymobile" - partly because the X-Files was a pop culture cult phenomenon at the time, and Special Agent Dana Scully was known to drive a few Contours on her assignments. Strangely, Special Agent Fox Mulder never drove a Contour, to the best of my knowledge.

My fiance used my car to go to work everyday. And on last Tuesday I got a call from her that she hit another car when tailing at traffic jam. I said "Ok" then I ask, "are U Ok" and she said "Yes, I'm Ok. I'm at my work place". So I’m cool...

Thank God my car was not bad enough. There’s no major part broken. But she made me so worried when she said she hit a Volvo. I’ve seen a Volvo hit a Gas Station Pump, the pump and the pole collapse but the Volvo are just fine. Alhamdulillah...

Muradiye Camii

The Muradiye Mosque was built by Murad II in 1435 (839 A.H.) on a hill northeast of the city that overlooks the palace grounds (Sarayici) to the northwest. Originally conceived of as a convent (tekke) for the Mevlevi order, the building was converted into a mosque when completed. A separate convent, soup kitchen (imaret) and school (mekteb) were built on the site; none of them survive today. The mosque remains in a heavily repaired condition following damage in major earthquakes.

The mosque is based on a reverse-T type plan of early Ottoman style. It is composed of a five bay portico leading into a central hall flanked by iwans east and west, and a prayer hall to the south. The central hall, presently at the same level with the prayer hall, was originally built lower, with a pool under the oculus of its dome that is now crowned with a lantern. The heavy arch that separates the two spaces is ornamented with muqarnas niches at its springing line. Side iwans are accessed through small arched entryways and contain niches for shelving and a fireplace (ocak). The steps leading to the single minaret begin inside the wall entering the western iwan, also providing access to the muezzin's lodge that is located above the main entrance on the interior. The current stone minaret dates from 1957. The original minaret, which was covered with decorative tiles, was rebuilt several times after earthquakes.

The Muradiye mosque is well-known for the tilework decoration of its interior. A variety of hexagonal tiles, featuring unique designs in white and blue, interlock with triangular pieces of turquoise color to form the mosaic of tiles that cover the walls of the prayer hall up to the top level of the first windows. At the center, the muqarnas mihrab niche stands in its tall ceramic frame, faced with faience in white, blue and turquoise featuring Koranic scriptures along floral and geometric designs. The frame remains cracked from an earthquake. The remaining wall space was covered with frescoes and calligraphy at the time, of which sections are still visible.

This block of flats was a conversion of an existing building. With it's reworked facade in stunning organic forms and its fantastic chimneys and rooftop, it looks as bold and convention defying today as it did when it was finished in 1906.
The building has been said to symbolize the legend of St. George killing the dragon, whose scaly back arches above the main facade.

Excellent Enamels

Had some good luck with finding enamel bowls lately. The best one was the blue Cathrineholm plate with an unusual design on it - usually I only see the Lotus pattern here on the west coast, if I see any Cathrineholm at all. It's sort of a sprayed web type of design. Web design!

At the thrift, it wasn't priced so I had to go and visit the "pricing lady". She must have taken a whole minute looking at the plate and sizing me up. Then, with a complete poker face, she said $3. I think it would have probably should have been 50 cents since it was in that pile. But I wasn't about to complain. It's marked on back as "Made With Crucible Stainless Steel - Cahtrineholm Norway".

The orange bowl is an small Emalox found at the thrift store for a dollar.

The tiny green enamel dish with the maple leaf, I've no idea who made it, but it was 45 cents.

Went out to take some shots of the sunset.. and was returning disappointed... not by the sunset, but by my choice of the location. Decided to take a different route home when I spotted this small guitar shop, and saw this gentleman at work. I pulled over, and got out only to see him lock his place up for the night. But, I hung around, hoping he'd go back to his repair work. I was also really impressed at the selection of guitars there, which doubled my intentions on getting a few shots.

He did..!! And I thought, awesome, I'll get a few shots thru the glass window. However, there was a car right behind me on the street and the reflection from it was ruining all my shots. Just then, the guy looked up and saw me. Instead of pretending anything, I politely made some signs basically asking him if I could take a few shots, and he gave me a thumbs up..!! So, I took a few shots while he continued his work. Tapped on the window, thanked him and I was on my way home.

I wish the store was open, so I could thank him in person. So, I'm going to find some time in next couple of days and stop by this place and thank him. My son keeps bugging me to get him a guitar.... no, I don't plan on buying one for him, but I will certainly ask this gentleman if he or someone else would teach him how to play one.

Hope I didn't bore you all with the commentary.

Despite the lack of vivid tonal range, I kept this in colors simply because of the rich and warm tones on the guitars.. but, if you feel differently, please don't hesitate to say so.

vokar shutter

Vokar designed and manufactured their own shutter for this camera, and it's a very unusual construction: both the aperture and shutter blade sets are contained in a single drop-in module (right), while the entire timing and actuating mechanism is in another preassembled module that occupies only half of the available space in the housing (left).

The shutter is cocked from behind by a tiny splined shaft that could pass for about a number 5.5 TORX screwdriver bit (unfortunately, neither a #5 nor a #6 will fit for test operating the shutter, so I had to remove the cocking shaft from the body to use for testing)

The American Way can be odd. This was a newly founded company trying to get off the ground; but, typically for Americans, they tooled this up for low cost manufacture in very large volumes: note all of the pressed metal parts and folded-tab assembly methods. This is a functional, although not very high-precision, way to build something, and it eliminates a huge amount of precision machining ..... but it requires a huge investment up front for tooling and equipment, which will only be paid for by large volume sales. A startup company would seem to be sticking its neck out very far to use methods like this on its first product. It might be that, coming right out of wartime production, this was the only way American manufacturers knew how to think...

In the end, it didn't save Vokar any money; the debt that they incurred to keep unit cost down might have been better invested in setting up machining processes suited to smaller volumes of product with less capital outlay up front. Without that capital equipment to amortize, their selling price might not have had to be any higher, for a higher quality product.

My 7D is going back to Canon because I am not happy with the focus functionality, I spoke to a very helpful person at the repair centre who suggested I send sample images along with the camera and lens, I have produced an array of shots with different camera settings, manual focus, P,AV,TV totally manual settings, etc, etc, etc. I have also included photos from my 350D which produces better images than the allegedly superior camera. I’ll keep you informed on progress or hopefully you will notice the progress.

Temporary Fix

Had a temporary crown put on yesterday afternoon. It sucked and still sucks. It's a totally different shade than my teeth, it's crooked, there are gaps in various places that I didn't have before, my gums are bruised, cut and swollen. I know it's only temporary until they make the "real" crown but I still have to live with this for 3-4 weeks. Bummer
