He Cleans up Nice! (A Self Portrait)

This was the first time that i've ever donned a Tuxedo of any kind. It felt good to get away from the monotony of cammies and service uniforms and for once feel like a handsome gentlemen. I'd like to think that i take very good care of myself, inside and out. Sometimes, to be honest, i don't feel like the effects are noticed as much as i would like for them to be. I've lived so many years of my life literally surviving from the affirmation and approval of others. The more i felt like i didnt get those things, the harder i would work to attain them. But i've noticed that this only makes me weaker. The saying is cliche' but so true....' Noone can make you happier than you are with yourself'.....

It's funny how something as arbitrary as wearing a tuxedo can reignite thoughts of self-appreciation and mental independance. I guess God has a sense of humor after all.....

My Mother was trying to take the door off of our oven because it always makes noise. So she undoes all the screws, and loh and behold..... The oven glass, instead of lifting up and out as one would believe it should do... Falls straight to the ground and shatters. Ironically, this is the same exact time that one of our house guests (one of my Father's good friends) is walking through the kitchen barefoot. Needless to say, he had to stand there a while as we cleaned up the mess. Good times, good times.

149:365 - Clean...

Getting organised with my Project365 is proving to be a much tougher challenge than it ever was the first time I completed it. I'm putting this down to having so many things spinning at the same time with starting a new job, volunteering and my PhD.

More and more frequently my shot for the day isn't even contemplated until a quarter to midnight and whilst I quite enjoy macro photography, by using up various table top photography ideas whilst the days are light means that I will struggle later in the year.

In part desperation I decided to grab a macro shot of a bottle of lens cleaner that was on my desk mainly because I liked the beads of moisture on the inside. Since I started getting more and more into photography I've found that one of the benefits of always having a camera with you is that it means you also always have a lens cleaning cloth with you as well... which is a massive bonus as a glasses wearer who also has a little girl that likes to grab Daddies glasses with her greasy mitts...

This is yet another cop out photo. I was prepping my new camera bag and was enjoying the image on my lens cleaning cloth and decided that this is as good of a photo as I'm going to come up with today. It was given to me by a world traveling monkey. He was in the Alsace region of France drunk on wine and cheese. Whilst at the counter of a little bistro getting a litre of coffee to help sober him up before crossing over into Germany for some Autobahn antics, he saw this and in a moment of drunken kindness thought he'd get if for me because it was automotive photography related and that I'd be one of those photographers brave enough (stupid enough in his words) to be lying on the ground, on the outside of a corner so I could get "The Shot".

Day 197: Sniffing Resolve

197/365 - January 12, 2010

We think Alex is bulemic. He regularly eats his wet food really fast and then pukes it up on the carpet. Because of that, we keep multiple cans of carpet cleaner in the apartment. It's never a good time to have a cat throw up on the floor, but tonight was especially annoying. I was tired, grumpy, and just really not up to dealing with it.

After I cleaned up the mess, I figured I might as well get my daily photo out of the way. As I was shooting, Jackson came by to check things out. He's a good cat. He doesn't leave messes around the apartment.

Metal Hair Comb

This hair comb has three different metals in it: a copper dot, a brass tear drop and swirl, and nickel silver frame and tines. Nickel silver is a stiff metal alloy of copper, nickel, and zinc so it is quite sturdy. This comb has 6 tines. The ends of each tine have a weld of nickel to create smooth tips so you won't scratch your scalp. The comb has a gentle curve to it so it will fit snug against your head. I hand make each comb so they are unique. The one you see here is the one you will receive.

These work at holding hair very well like the hair barrettes we make but do it in a different way. This comb will securely hold hair in a French twist, bun, or French roll.

This comb measures 4.75 inches (12.1 cm) long with the tines measuring 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) long and the entire comb measures 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) wide.

*Care*
We do not coat our jewelry with any lacquer or other chemicals so the metals on this comb will tend to tarnish over time but can be polished up with any silver, brass, or copper cleaner. Also an old tooth brush and some toothpaste can do just as well. You can also just leave the piece alone and let the metals fade to softer tones.

Old Magic Lantern Petzval lens with Gaffe tape

The treasure hunt landed me a Petzval lens out of a Bausch & Lomb Magic Lantern projector, of 1910-1920 vintage. The Petzval type of design is popular for portraits, because of its 3-dimensional image quality. Very sharp at the center, but fuzzy and dark at the edges, thus makes the subject pop while leaving everything else soft and mellow.

It was a bit dusty, but nothing cannot be cleaned by a good doze of dish washing detergent. It does not have a lens board to mount on so I have to make do with two empty 4x5 film boxes and some generous application of Gaffe tape.

There is no aperture control, but fortunately there is a factory cut slit for so-called "waterhouse stops". On the other hand, who want to shoot this old lady stopped down? There is no shutter, so the black hat trick or a Packard Shutter is needed. Just a few weeks, my carpenter will finish my shutter box and I'm ready to go!

Eastbourne Pier

Eastbourne Pier is a firm favourite on the south coast of England and has an air of refinement and charm about it that is almost unique in terms of the piers that are still remaining today.

Although it has undergone significant refurbishment over the years, this has always been very tastefully done and the end result is a construction that somehow is rather quintessentially English, in a somewhat understated way, less ostentatious perhaps.

Eastbourne pier was officially opened in 1870, but construction work was not completed until 1872. It was fairly rigorously constructed and has not been so adversely affected by storms or floods, as some of its counterparts. The only significant damage it has suffered was in 1877, when part of the pier at shore side was literally washed away, but since then there has been relatively little incidence of damage.

When it first opened, the pier was simply a promenade facility with little in the way of facilities. A total of 6 little kiosks were provided, but in effect that was about it. It was (and indeed still is) a good length at about 303 metres (1,000 ft). So it makes a nice walk and the Victorians and Edwardians soon took Eastbourne to their hearts, as they took their promenades on the pier.

As Eastbourne Pier became more popular, more services and facilities were provided, including a rather opulent pavilion, with a 400 seat capacity, but this was to be short-lived, since it was only constructed in 1888 but was then replaced with a much grander 1000 seat theatre as well as a bar and office accommodation. Two ‘saloon’ type facilities were introduced halfway down the pier as well, so there was plenty to do.

1912 saw a new entrance being created, which was truly Edwardian and perhaps a little more minimalist than certain Victorian ‘follies’ had been. This air of Edwardian simplicity is still very much retained in Eastbourne Pier today, even though the Edwardian entrance gates were replaced in the 1950’s. They are not, however, vulgar or ugly, but have been designed in accordance with Edwardian charm. So in some ways the fact that part of it was built in Victorian times and part in Edwardian times, makes it an almost unique blend of the best from these two eras, with the Edwardian entrance perhaps influencing it more than the Victorian internal, which has been substantially changed over the years.

Eastbourne PierOne of the classic features of Eastbourne Pier is the camera obscura, which was actually introduced as part of the 1888 refurbishment and is a wonderful attraction, having been very lovingly restored in 2003. This has a simply amazing 360° projection. Truly stunning and it is quite amazing to think that it is so old.

Eastbourne Pier also boasts a nightclub, which used to be the former theatre, but which is quite unique as piers go. Despite the fact that Eastbourne is viewed as being a retirement option, there is not just the nightclub on the pier, but also other things happening at night, such as the Bar Copa, which unlike the nightclub is free. Bar Copa is open every night till late, but the Atlantis nightclub is only open from Wednesday through to Saturday, but you can dance the night away until 2 am, all year round.

For those who are too young… or even too old to go clubbing there is still a lot to do. There are two games arcades, where you can play very space age games or just stick with the old traditional and well loved games, such as the good old slot machines.

Eastbourne also has a little bit of an edge on some of her contemporaries, through having a glass blower, where you can see the most intricate of ornaments being blown, literally before your eyes. The shops are also very good and are just that little bit different.

There are plenty of options for eating, from cheap and cheerful chips to a family type restaurant or deliciously traditional pub food. So you won’t be stuck for somewhere to eat, with all budgets and tastes catered for. From cafe stalls to nice dining, the choice is excellent.

The fact that Eastbourne is a relatively genteel resort, as English seaside resorts go, is reflected in the fact that it does not have the fairground rides that are so prevalent on other piers. So at Eastbourne, you will not be scared to death on some death defying ride. No, you can gently amble down the pier, taking a pause to look through the camera obscura whilst you are going down, pop into one of the little shops or just clean out your system with some good old fashioned fresh air as you stride (or stroll, depending on your preferences) down the pier.

Eastbourne PierFamilies and disabled people will find everything on one level. The amusement arcades are the main attractions for children, or the camera obscura, but there is no dedicated children’s play area.

At night, Eastbourne pier is lit up which shows off its proud entrance and beautiful shape perfectly. It is a wonderful spectacle and it lends Eastbourne Pier an air of elegance that is very apt

Stephan's invention: white trash risotto

In the interest of saving money, breaking the cycle of eating fast food twice a day, and cleaning the detritus from my pantry, a couple of weeks ago, I decided to trim my grocery budget to ZERO and commit to eating whatever I had in the house until it runs out. I had bought a bunch of 50% off stuff from an Albertson's closing down a month or two ago, and my cupboards had been overflowing since then anyway. I'm just buying staples, which for me is milk and Coca-Cola.

Two weeks later, I'm just barely beginning to get to the good stuff. Bear in mind I'm quite clueless about cooking, though I've been watching Alton Brown a lot and dreaming. I came up with this from only stuff I've had around for a while.

* 1 package of Farmhouse Long Grain & Wild Rice. No idea when I got it. Prepared according to directions.

* 2 italian sausages - first bought in a six pack in February for making pizza and frozen since then - started thawing them yesterday with no clue what I was going to do with it. Googled what to do with them, decided to cut off the casings and fry them up in:

* olive oil from one of the 3 or 4 unfinished bottles floating around. Just a little bit - my first chance to try this awesome cast iron pan - part of a whole set I bought from a thrift store for $50 a while back. While that was cooking, I got the idea to try something I had heard of, but wasn't sure what it was: deglazing. Huh, says you can use water, but wine is best. I drank all that... except

* A mini bottle of Delicato White Zinfandel - 187 ml, a four pack of crappy wine my ex-gf bought and drank only one of. Perfect!!! I spent like 5-10 minutes pouring that in and scraping while the rice finished cooking, and even added a little teeny bit of:

* flour - left over from my bread machine experiments. Ooh, this is working, I've got a sort of tasty little sauce going on here! WTF! WWAD? (What Would Alton Do)

* Kosher salt. I have no idea if this did anything useful, but I put some in. Alton puts it in everything. OK, one more item, something to pretend I'm being semi-healthy. Aha!

* A can of peas, drained. Again, no clue where I got this or how long it had been on the shelf. It might've come back from Burning Man. I threw the rice back into the deglazed pan, threw back in the sausage (which I had drained), and put in the peas. I heated the whole mixture up in a pan, and am eating it from a bowl, and it's pretty yummy.

Did I do this "right"? I have no clue, but it's edible and totally from what I already had in the house. I'm pretty proud of myself!

Honest, it's been two weeks, I've only eaten outside food maybe three times, and I've still got 2 packages of tuna, 2 salmon steak, 1 crab, some sea scallops, 2 more sausages, chicken wings, frozen burgers, bread machine mix, frozen potatoes, soups, rice, noodles, etc. Amazing the amount of stuff I've accumulated.

So I'm thinking I can go another two weeks of zero food budget, which is going to save me an insane amount compared to what I usually spend on restaurants, frozen meals and the like. Seems healthier.

I've even got at least one or two more servings of this stuff!

Red chile salsa (sauce) can be made from dried chiles.

Select dry, clean, mold-and-bug-free red chiles. (Don't use chile from ristras that have been sprayed, treated or shellacked!)

Remove stems, seeds, and veins from chiles. 12-14 large chiles yield about a pint of chile puree. Leave the veins in if you're not a sissy. :-)
Rinse the chiles thoroughly in warm water, until they're completely clean.

Place the clean chiles in a pan and cover with warm water for 45 minutes to an hour to allow chiles to rehydrate. Keep adding warm water as the chiles absorb it. Place chiles in a saucepan with enough water to cover and simmer about 10 minutes. The chiles should continue to swell and soften. The resulting pulp should be soft, thick, and separate easily from the chile skin. Place the chiles and some of the water in a blender and puree until smooth. Squeeze the puree through a colander or sieve to remove any remaining bits of skin.

Red Chile Salsa:
1 c. red chile puree
1 c. water
2 minced garlic cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbs. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. crushed oregano leaves

In a saucepan mix chile puree, water, garlic, salt, and oil. Simmer gently about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add oregano and simmer another 5-7 minutes. Makes about 1 pint. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator.

Our Suite At Palazzo: Bath

Double doors opened to a very nice bathroom, impeccably clean. The tub was deep and good for two people, and there was a tile ledge all the way around for wine glasses, etc. The glass shower stall was very nice too, and the lights in the bathroom were on a dimmer - another nice touch.

Ack - I thought I had managed to take this without my reflection in the mirror, but there's still a bit of me in there.

Day #95 - 11/11/07 - Obsessive Hand Washer

There's a bit of a story behind this boring photo.

I had a strange thing happen to me tonight. I went out with Doug, Heather and Salina to eat at Buca Di Beppo's downown tonight, and afterwards we went to go see that new Christmas movie. We met up with a friend of mine and his girlfriend there.

Now, I had never met his girlfriend before, (though I know she had tried to start shit with a good friend of mine) so when they walked up I was nice and polite and said "Hi, I'm Xelia!" and reached out to shake her hand like I would to any person I meet.

She looked at me and my hand like I was fucking diseased. I was shocked for a second, and then looked at her puzzled and said "...okay, so you don't shake hands..." and backed off. Awkward. She scowled at me and said no. Me and all my friends were kind of shocked. Her boyfriend tried to break the tension and try to introduce Doug, Heather and Salina but she didn't seem to care because she didn't acknowledge them at all. Even more awkward. So we just walked into the theater, leaving them standing there.

I had never had anything like that happen to me in my life. I'd never had anyone be so rude to me. I'm a fucking germaphobe and I still shake people's hands or hug them when I first meet them, no matter how uncomfortable it makes me because I'm polite and I think it's the right thing to do. Now, I'd understand not shaking someone's hand if you had a cold or were just deathly uncomfortable and you explained that, but she didn't say a word to me. She was just completely rude to both me and my friends. I don't get where people get off thinking it's okay to treat others like that. Also, why would you want to make such a bad first impression? I'd be so embarrassed if my boyfriend ever treated my friends like that.

We sat down in the theater and my friend walked up to us alone and tried to tell me not to worry about it, she's like that with everyone and she just needs to warm up to me. Pretty much just covering and making excuses. I don't ever want to be in her presence enough for her to 'warm up to me'. Then they sat on the opposite side of the theater. Thank god I didn't attempt to hug her like I do some people. She probably would have punched me in the face.

I was really pissed off and totally offended when it happened, but I'm over it now. Just kind of shocked. I don't understand what would compel someone to be so mean to someone they don't know.

On another note, I have an OCD habit of washing my hands obsessively. I had just come from washing my hands. I'm sure my hands were ten times cleaner than hers have ever been.

* Couldn't decide what the theme should be this week. Then I decided I'd try something a Florida photographer has done and is on exhibit down there. Its all photos of his body parts. (No, it is a clean family rated exhibit with proper body parts exhibited) His goatee is something like a large 24x36 print. So I thought I'd try pieces of me and tried by taking a shot of my eye. When I went to work on it in LR, it screamed to me to do something strange in PS so... here is my convoluted face. You decide what my 365 theme should be this week - "PS work" or "Pieces of Me"

You have no idea how much I love Converse sneakers; I have like a million pairs in a bunch of colors. I always get them a size larger than I actually need (I'm a 6.5... yeah, I know).

Anyway, those little black thingies you see on the floor come from this big huge knit sweater I love to wear when it's cold in here. Problem is, whenever I take it off, it likes to disintegrate a little and fill my floor with this weird stuff. Not fun to clean because it keeps running away from me, I swear.

On another note, the new lens (Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 EX) is blowing my mind. I never expected this sort of quality from a non-canon lens, but this lens is by far my sharpest and cleanest lens.
