When we first arrived at 'The Ice Zone' during our preview visit, we were apprehensive. The rink was small and the ice surface wasn’t very good. Nancy and I had been hoping that hockey would be an enticement for Max, a way to make the transition to Beijing easier for him. After all, we were going to uproot him from his friends, school and his beloved sports teams, and transplant him into a foreign culture. Looking around, we didn’t think Max would be impressed.

A few seconds after examining the rink, I shouted out to Nancy: “I recognize that pennant! Come see.”

Two years earlier, Max had played in the Bell Capital Cup tournament in Ottawa. A team from Beijing was going to play, but their hockey gear was lost in transit. A call had gone out to parents to see if they could spare some equipment for this wayward team; they had to make do with what was provided. Later, the hotel the team was staying at was set on fire by an arsonist. The team spent the night in emergency shelters (OC Transpo busses if I recall), and showed up late, lacking sleep, for the tournament.

Guess who won the tournament?

We were sold. We were moving to Beijing.

I had better get up to talk to my upper trainer. First I need to find my lion Aslan who is located in my middle area. He is sitting next to the flowery area in the courtyard of pedlow place.

I look to my left and see my friend Pascal. He is my middle trainer. I love Pascal. He doesn't say anything but he is fun and sweet as anything. Pascal has a fizzy drink that he is holding out for me. Fizzy juice, I love that stuff. It does something, like it fizzes me up. Pascal is gesturing for me to climb into the balloon and catch a ride up.

I am in the balloon and my trusty bee is buzzing by my side. She is my best friend and lately she has been being a bee named Bumblebore. "BumbleBore, don't forget this is an upside down picture, when we go up we are really going down to the up of downland."

Up we go, up, up up up up up up up up up up up up up, up up up, up up up, up up up up up up up. To make a long story short, we arrive finally.

"Phew, it is scorching hot up here. I am going to drink the rest of my fizzy juice." I say, and I do. I am feeling fine. I am estruating and not intuating which is a beginners mistake.

"BumbleBore, who is in charge in the down, down down? I heard that K.W. is a trainer now. He is not here is he?

BumbleBore is buzzing frantically. She begins to take the form of a familiar puffalump. BumbleBore is good for lots of things but she can't talk and bumble at the same time.

"B.G..You are ever such a Dumb Dumb. We warned you about this very thing. Would you look at that Egglomaniac. His head is as big as a house."

" He looks like Humpty Dumpty. Now what do we do?"

"Perhaps you should spellerate him."

"O.K. Emily. I will spellerate him but I am not going to talk to him. You have got to be joking that I have to deal with this kind of crap.

"Emily laughs and laughs and laughs and all the demons from H.E.double hockeysticks appear and they all laugh merrily.

I love that as a title for a book. "And they all laugh Merrily."

And so we do.

Dartmouth goaltender Bobby Gaudet, now the Big Green's coach, and Mark Bedard. I once came upon Gaudet playing catch with one of his sons before a little league game. Son was using a baseball glove and Bobby was using his college hockey glove, presumably the one in the photo above. Somehow, it seemed wrong that a mitt once used to lead the Big Green to NCAA glory was now catching baseballs. On a second note, check out Gaudet's stick, which is a Tommy Keane model. Tommy Keane's was a local sports shop, specializing in golf, but it also supplied Dartmouth with a good amount of athletic equipment. This was the old days and you couldn't easily get gear, even from Boston. So I'm guessing Tommy Keane's had a deal with one of the major stick makers where they put their logo on a blank product.

How to Extend a Runway

At the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, we’ve started construction on an extension to our main runway. We’re adding 1700 feet (1330’ at this end and 370’ at the other) so that 747 cargo planes have enough runway to accelerate to their takeoff speed when they’re loaded to maximum capacity.

It’s not as simple as it sounds. The runway is 200 feet wide, the length of a hockey rink, with another 100 feet of flat ground on each side. Because the extension is going over ground that drops off as much as 25 feet from the level of the existing runway, we need lots of rock fill to bring up the grades. By “lots”, I mean that we estimate that 208,000 cubic meters of rock fill will be needed.

To get a sense of how much rock that is, picture a box. If the bottom of the box is the size of a football field then the box would be as high as a 12 story building.

Composing music for a short film. Took this photo a few nights ago, while I was up very late trying to get this stuff finished ASAP. I really need to diversify my classical-style instruments though. Just a handful of stringed instruments and some brutal piano multisamples available, which is not enough for a really decent score, IMO. Of course I fill it out with some organic-sounding synthesis (granular synthesis works great for this), but still, nothing beats some of the traditional real instruments. :)

I was delighted with the way this shot came out. I saw this couple walking out from the ice castle, hand in hand, so fired a few shots off... I feel it's just such a beautiful shot and capture.

After the tears and squealing, Laura was quick to get the phone out and spread the joy... time to get some shots off then :) I was really pleased that I managed to get some images of the event as it really documents the moment well I feel.

Shot taken during our 2010 holiday to Banff (February 8th, 2010), in the Canadian Rockies. This image was taken on the morning I proposed at Lake Louise. We spent the morning skiing in the Lake Louise resort, before actually moving on to the actual Lake Louise where I found a spot, got down onto one knee on the frozen lake and popped the question to a resounding and tearful YES! I had also been skiing all day with a bottle of Moet champagne in my backpack, with two plastic glasses too... glad I didn't tumble :o

Architectural Warp

as the weather was fairly mild yesterday evening, I decided to go on a short photo-tour here in Innsbruck.
first, I was heading towards the central station, but couldn't really find anything that interested me...so headed over to the Olympia Halle, the ice hockey stadion.

this is just one of a couple of shots i did, but for me this is the one that impressed me most.

it's a six shot panorama, 3 shots, 2 rows and each shot with 3 exposures. sofar nothing really special.

the tricky part was as follows:
the mushroom (glass building straight ahead) was only some 7m in front of me and stands up some 12-15m >>> not too much space to take the photo >>> i would need some pretty wide angle.

in the end it worked out fine with 12mm and three shots a row. the effect i got looks pretty fisheye-like, but still i think the quality is quite ok.

At the very mention of the name, Art Attack!, Sotheby's cowers in fear. This year's event, Art Attack!: Day of the Dead Art, takes auction bidding wars to new levels of fun and destruction, with proceeds from the chaos benefiting both KDHX Community Media and South City Open Studio and Gallery.

Art Attack!: Day of the Dead Art took place on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the Koken Art Factory (2500 Ohio Street, Saint Louis, MO 63104).

Art Attack! is a competitive art destructo-auction, featuring works by 32 local artists, styled as a single-elimination tournament, with the overall winner taking home $1,000. Losing paintings face the possibility of destruction.

Here’s how it played out: Randomly selected pairs of paintings competed head-to-head. Audience response to each painting was measured by an Applause-O-Meter, with the piece receiving the most applause proceeding to the next round. Losing works of art then faced a perilous future in front of the Wheel of Misfortune. This large wheel included several imaginative ways of destroying the losing piece. If the Wheel landed on “Certain Death,” the piece was destroyed immediately. If not, the audience had a chance to save it by bidding on it in an auction. If the minimum bid determined for the round was not reached, the piece was destroyed accordingly. This year's methods of destruction included a chainsaw, a scythe-wielding Death, a spray-paint-armed Slasher, a hockey-stick-waving Sarah Palin and even a zombie "Thriller" army.

Art Attack!: Day of the Dead Art spanned five nerve-rattling rounds until the final winner was announced. Participating artists understood the possibility of their artwork being destroyed. However, this was a fun, high-energy evening that provided great exposure regardless of the outcome of the competition--and money raised from the auction benefited two fine art organizations in Saint Louis: KDHX Community Media and SCOSAG.

Shorelines

This image represents a few new things ...

1. The start of a new series of images entitled "Shorelines" ... it seems that I have shot quite a bit of shoreline imagery as it seems I have been drawn to this topic.

2. I acquired a used Spot Meter which I used for my exposure settings in this image, the meter reading was taken off the sand which was darker than what you see here in the image. I am still honing in on my "Medium Gray" or "Zone 5" setting in my brain but i like the tonality I got out of this image as it highlights the bright late afternoon sun reflecting off the sand.

3. I developed this roll of Shanghai GP3 in HC-110 dilution "B" (16mL syrup to 484 mL water) for 7.5 minutes @ 20'C with 30 second initial agitation and 3 very gentle turns on every 30 seconds thereafter. The HC-110 gave up some nice results in my humble opinion and I am looking forward to using it further.

During February (2009), cold, clear and spectacular weather blessed our valley! The highest bench overlooking Gitanmaax and Hazelton provides a commanding view of spectacular sunsets. As a result, at sunset on Valentines Day (2009), I stood at the edge of the bench to view and photograph the sun sinking into the western horizon. It was -10 C. A raven nearby called out to mock the stillness. Suddenly, a loud thud rang out below me. I anxiously looked below to see what was the matter! A little boy with a hockey stick slowly skated to center ice and stood deep in thought. In the shadows of the hut his father watched in silence. It was then that I finally realized it was the little boy who fired a puck at the boards to shatter that silence!
