Our Friend Mark Mitcheson flew a small single engine Cessna from the midwest, to Ethiopia, with another friend of his... They were delivering the plane for Ethiopian airllines to use as a training plane.

The photo shows the route they took, including long non-stop sections over the Atlantic Ocean which they did at under 10,000ft.

January 6

January 6

1:24 PM CET

I am too jetlagged to be writing this at the moment, but suffice it to say, we are back home on New York soil. I will however do my best to recapitulate the day.

After a week of fitful sleeping, I continued my trend by waking up at 3:30am, getting back to bed at 6:30, and then finally packing and getting ready to go at 10 or so. We had a coffee at the Concertgebouw cafe (the Concert Building, right behind Julie's parents' place) and then headed over to the airport.

It was a pretty long and tedious flight, though everything compared to the Asia flight we took in November seems like a breeze now. Julie and I were both disappointed, yet again, that there was no personal entertainment system—KLM's is our favorite, and this is the first time that none of our flights had them. Bummer. So I spent most of the flight, between catnaps, reading chapters of Wicked—which I thankfully bought at the airport on a whim flying over to Amsterdam last week.

Julie's fear of flying seems to truly be gone, as this is now the fourth flight she's taken since her hypnosis, with nary a sweaty palm or high-pitched groan. Hurrah! (For the circulation in my hands, mainly—but the fact that she doesn't have to experience hours of mortal fear is also a plus).

We had dinner with my parents, and then we happily returned to Manhattan, suitcases and dog in tow.

This shot was taken as we walked into our gate, E19, and headed down the passenger walkway tunnel (is there a name for that tunnel, by the way? Like... loading bridge, or something?). I held up some traffic as I waited for the plane to appear. I had the whole plane in some other shots, but the framing felt the most right on this one.

Click, click, click... nothing.
The in-flght entertainment
Really kind of sucks.

The Flight to Amsterdam

The Flight to Amsterdam

We're on an Alitalia (A320) flight to AMS. The best part of the flight was when we had a near miss with an Alitalia 767-300. During the climb out, all of the sudden we felt the thrust being reduced and the nose pitch down. A moment later out poped a 767 which "nearly" collided with us. We were seperated by about two plane lengths vertically and a little further horizontally. When we deplaned in Amsterdam, I thought the Captain had kind of a shitty grin, but I didn't say anything.

Germany 063

Germany 063

I flew to Frankfurt recently on an invitation from Henrick Hering the German Minister for Viticulture be part of the Master jury for the annual Best of Riesling competition held by the German Wine Institute in Mainz. We would be judging around two thousand Rieslings in four categories of wine - trocken (9g max), halbtrocken, sweet (90g plus) and botrytis wines. The bulk of the wines were German but there were also a certain number of awards going to Rieslings from other areas of the world such as Austria, Australia, Luxembourg and Canada.
The first day was spent visiting a few vineyards along the Mosel during a very dramatic thunder storm. First we visited Schloss Lieser.
Where Thomas Haag (2nd cousin to Willi) was making great wines from the Brauneberger Juffer vineyard.
Then on to Kerpen in Wehlen who property is on the opposite side of the Mosel to the famous Sonnenuhr vineyard and who has vines there also.
Last of all we went to St Urbanshof in Liewen where Nic Weis is making
some great wines from the Liewener Lauretislay, Okfener Bockstein and
Piesporter Goldtropfchen Vineyards. A really impressive set of wines followed plus a 1969 Auslese that was fresh and youthful still with aromas of chamomile and honey, char grilled limes, nuts, white mushrooms and kerosene. Still fresh light and clean with a perfect acid balance.
Delicious!
The next morning I had to be back in London on Sunday just to go for lunch (!) I took an early flight into London City Airport.
It was at le Gavroche and was filming for the final episode of Michel Roux's series Service for the BBC.
As part of the show Michel would nominate two out of seven underprivileged teenagers to go on to scholarships that would get them into the restaurant business as either a Maitre'd or as a Sommelier. Hotel du Vin was giving a six months scholarship to one of them whom I was going to mentor.
I was there with our Operations Manager Mike Warren to present the winning student nominated as Sommelier our scholarship.
Filming went over schedule (of course) and I found myself with 35minutes to get to Heathrow - luckily a fast taxi driver got me there in time but it cost me ?65.
Back in Germany a very smart chauffeur in a Mercedes got me to Deidesheim in just under an hour.
The next day we were judging at the Hambacher Schloss made famous as this is where the design for the German flag was created in 1832. We were split into groups of 5-6 judges and tasted flights of 30 wines in each of the four categories. The afternoon we tasted the top six from each flight and ranked them in order 1-6.
The following day there we a series of Riesling seminars ranging from analyzing flavour and aroma compounds to in-depth geological surveys of Germany and how these affect aroma compounds - all fascinating stuff but very technical (spectrograph analysis, etc)
We are still to find out which wines were ranked as the best, so after a couple of swift German lagers at Frankfurt airport we went home.

Crow in Flight

Crow in Flight

A carrion crow flies by.

The carrion crow (corvus corone) of the family corvidae.
The all-black carrion crow is one of the cleverest, most adaptable of our birds. It is often quite fearless, although it can be wary of man. They are fairly solitary, usually found alone or in pairs. The closely related hooded crow has recently been split as a separate species. Carrion crows will come to gardens for food and although often cautious initially, they soon learn when it is safe, and will return repeatedly to take advantage of whatever is on offer.
[RSPB website]

Crystal Palace Park came from the Penge Place estate when, in 1854, the Crystal Palace was moved from Hyde Park (where it was set up in 1851 for The Great Exhibition).
The Crystal Palace was designed by Joseph Paxton, who also played a role in the relocation and designing the new site with its Italian gardens and terraces.
The area waned in the late c19th, and despite hosting the Festival of Empire in 1911, the managing company declared bankruptcy. In 1913 the Earl of Plymouth purchased it to save it, and a public supscription was raised to purchase it for the nation.
It was a naval training ground during the Great War, after which it was the first Imperial War Museum.
The 1920s saw a programme of restoration and rejuvenation, but 30 November 1936 an office fire broke out and the building burned down.
Since then the Park has hosted various events and partial development. Today it is primarily a public park.

Taken in 1981 at Beale AFB, California, Physiological Support Division, USAF Hospital Beale.

PSD is the flight integration facility where pressure suits survival kits, parachutes and other flight equipment are maintained, fitted, overhauled or integrated into the aircraft systems. (At this time U2R/TR-1, and SR-71A)

This is a David Clark S1033 suit, a seven layered suit used to unlimited altitude. The suit uses 100% oxygen which enters the suit through a pressure regulator in the rear of the helmet. The helmet has a face curtain to assure that any suit leaks do not decompress the face area, and that pressure is available for breathing. Exhaled gases get passed through the face curtain to the suit environment. The suit pressure is maintained with compressed Oxygen from the aircraft system, through a dual stage suit pressure controller. The regulator is operated by two vacuum aneroids which compress seals, if the ambient cabin pressure is less than required, the vacuum aneroids contract allowing system pressure to enter the suit. The small pulley with the steel cable running through it is the helmet hold-down strap which stops the helmet from rising when the suit is inflated.

In the event of ejection there are 2 auxiliary oxygen bottles in the survival kit which should supply enough oxygen for the crewman to reach the ground.

Integrated into the suit is the parachute harness, connected by the Koch connector on her left shoulder. The parachute is a semi-rigid chute ballistically opened by a mortar fired 25 pound steel slug. The chute utilizes a quarter deployment bag, only partially opening at altitude. Once speed has reduced, the chute fully deploys, and is of a diameter of 35 feet.

The suit also contains automatic life preservers under each arm, equipped with a salt water sensor which immediately inflates the preservers when exposed to sea-water.

There have been successful ejections above 80,000 feet.

A top secret National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) drafted by US intelligence agencies and leaked to the media last week, summed up the situation in Pakistan as “no money, no energy, no government”. According to McClatchy newspapers, the NIE warned that the government was facing an accelerating economic crisis that includes food and energy shortages, escalating fuel costs, a sinking currency and a massive flight of foreign capital accelerated by an escalating insurgency.

Just two years ago, economic commentators were describing Pakistan as a success story under former military strongman President Pervez Musharraf and speculated that it would be the “next Asian Tiger”. But the situation dramatically changed after Musharraf was compelled to call elections. His party suffered a humiliating defeat in February and he was finally forced to step down as president in August. The ruling coalition led by President Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is already confronting mass resentment over the continuing war in the border areas and a worsening social turmoil.

This is what it feels like when a country faces bankruptcy. The electricity goes out for as much as 12 hours a day, the gasoline lines get longer, and depositors rush to banks to pull out their meager savings. After weeks of begging in vain for help from the international community, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves have dropped to just $4.3 billion, down nearly 75% in the past year because of soaring prices for commodities, particularly oil, which accounts for about one-third of imports. The country presently has only enough cash to pay for about 45 days of imports at current rates. And the rupee has lost about 25% so far this year. Unlike Iceland, whose economy collapsed (BusinessWeek.com, 10/9/08) as a direct result of the global credit crunch, Pakistan’s problems are largely homegrown. Indeed, its banks are well capitalized and did not get caught up buying fancy debt securities linked to the U.S. housing market.

the crisis’s impact on Pakistan’s real economy, which was already reeling from a 60% increase in oil prices since the beginning of the year and inflation at a 30-year high, has been severe. Last year it was the star performer among Asia’s indexes, but for now the Karachi Stock Exchange is in complete paralysis. On Aug. 27 the exchange introduced a circuit breaker that prevents prices from falling. Trade, which had already halved by 50% from January to May, to about 150 million shares a day, has dwindled to a few thousand per day.

The White-throated Kingfisher, Halcyon smyrnensis also known as White-breasted Kingfisher or Smyrna Kingfisher is a tree kingfisher which is widely distributed in plains and lower hills all over India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Bangladesh. Four races have been identified according to colour and size differentiation.

The adult has a bright blue back, wings and tail. Its head, shoulders, flanks and lower belly are chestnut, and the throat and breast are white. The flight of the White-throated Kingfisher is rapid and direct, the short rounded wings whirring. The large bill and legs are bright red. In flight, large white patches are visible on the blue and black wings. Sexes are similar, but juveniles are a duller version of the adult. The call of this noisy kingfisher is a chuckling chake-ake-ake-ake-ake.

White-throated Kingfisher is a common species of a variety of habitats with some trees, and its range is expanding. It perches conspicuously on wires or other exposed perches within its territory, and is a frequent sight in south Asia.

The nest is a 50cm tunnel in an earth bank. A single clutch of 4-7 round white eggs is typical.

Diet

This species mainly hunts large insects, rodents, snakes, fish and frogs. It is reputed to eat tired migratory passerine birds like Chiffchaffs where the opportunity arises. Like pied kingfisher, white breasted kingfisher also observes its prey from the superior position and the moment its within reach, a flash of lightening it catches it.

Scientific Classification

Kingdom:Animalia
Phylum:Chordata
Class:Aves
Order:Coraciiformes
Family:Halcyonidae
Genus:Halcyon
Species:H. smyrnensis

Life is a grind

Life is a grind

We set out to come home from Kerala on Tuesday 26 Jul 05....just as the biggest rain ever was hitting Mumbai. Just as we were about to land in Mumbai they closed the airport and we got diverted to Goa for a few days. By the time we finally got to Mumbai we had missed our flight home (which had been cancelled anyway) so we had a few days to think about life, the universe and everything whilst waiting for transport. This nugget of Wisdom was at the Afghan church in Mumbai.

Heading Back to Mumbai

Heading Back to Mumbai

This was the line of people waiting to check in to a flight from Riyadh to Mumbai, just a day or two after the siege of the city had come to an end. What thoughts they must all have been having.

Against a Blue Sky!

Against a Blue Sky!

Is it real or is it photoshop? The original sky was grey and drab...photoshop to the rescue!

CF-18 "Hornet" in colours dedicated to the 100th anniversary of powered flight in Canada. The CF-18 Hornet demonstration jet is already dazzling audiences with its brand new design which commemorates the Canadian Centennial of Flight.

The paint job took 13 days to complete, thanks to a hearty supply of coffee and donuts, some classic rock music and a hard-working crew known as the "Century Hornet paint team."

"Sometimes we'd get out of the paint booth at 9:30 at night," said 4 Wing Cold Lake graphic designer Jim Belliveau, who designed the paint scheme and worked with a crew to get it sanded and painted.

Mr. Belliveau said that getting the project completed in such a short period of time was the result of a large team of volunteers, primarily consisting of aircraft component and structures (ACS) technicians from 1 Air Maintenance Squadron at 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta.

"The amount of work involved in this undertaking was enormous," said Cpl Pascal Pidoux, one of the technicians. "It [involved] a graphic design artist coming up with a design, the sanding of the plane, and the masking and painting of the specific design."

"This job was not done by a single person, but by a dedicated crew," he added. "I was happy to be part of that crew. We worked long hours, but seeing the expressions on people's faces at the unveiling of the aircraft was priceless."

"Everyone was 100 per cent focused and committed to this project," said Mr. Belliveau. "I saw people who took a lot of initiative and were often two or three steps ahead of me. They were doing things in about half or a third of a time that I was expecting. They were an absolute joy to work with."

Mr. Belliveau, who has designed 24 paint schemes for demonstration jets since 1983, said that this year's design is his favourite. The Centennial of Flight logo (designed by Dave O'Malley of Ottawa) is on the tail of the aircraft, and the colours and designs were chosen for very specific reasons.

"The gold on the aircraft ties it in with the other Centennial of Flight aircrafts [the Hawk One F-86 Sabre and a Snowbirds CT-114 Tutor], and the dark blue ties it in with the aircraft paint scheme designed in 1967 [Canada's Centennial year]," explained Mr. Belliveau. "The graphics on the wings are meant to symbolise the wings of a bird and the Aurora Borealis. The red and white lightening bolt has been featured on Canadian Forces aircraft since the 1950s, but we've given it a bit of a Hornet flair. We wanted to create a paint scheme that looks like it was designed specifically for the aircraft: forward looking rather than retro."

As an added detail, the names of 100 Canadians who have made significant contributions to Canada's aviation history are painted on the jet in a pale blue colour.

Chris Hadfield, a former Air Force pilot and now astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency, is one of those Canadians. "Canada has been a country explored, connected and enriched by aviation," he said. "The bold, original and persistent men and women of aerospace have lifted our nation in peace and in war, in commercial transportation and in atmospheric research. I was inspired to fly by many of the names on the [aircraft]. To be included in their company is a tremendous honour."

The Canadian public will get a chance to see the demonstration jet design and all its details at different air shows and ceremonies across the country. The job of flying this particular bird belongs to Captain Tim Woods, who said that being part of Canada's celebration of the Centennial of Flight is a tremendous privilege and added, "I find it incredible how far we have come in just 100 years. I can't imagine what will happen in the next 100."

The Army at Fort Polk is flying a new Helicopter over Vernon Parish these days. UH72A Lakota general support/VIP Support/Med-Evac helicopters belonging to “A” Company of the 5th Aviation BN which currently has nine of the choppers at the Ft Polk Airfield.

Named the Lakota, this utility helicopter is named, as are all Army Aviation assets after Indian Tribes. For example, the Chinook CH-47 Helicopter manufactured in 1962.

The three crew, duel engine helicopter can seat 10, fly up to 168 MPH, has a ceiling of 18,000’ and is an unarmed utility asset that can open its rear doors to accept hospital stretchers of wounded. One of the new features of this helicopter came in handy during the two day long hours flight to South Dakota , full Auto-Pilot capability. During a demonstration at 1,000’ the Lakota was flying on a computer entered course when a simple turn of a knob, changed the direction & destination of the helicopter while the pilot & co-pilot were flying ‘hands off.’

Two of the Lakota Helicopters flew to South Dakota recently to participate in the Rosebud Indian Reservation Powwow where the crew participated in the Lakota Sun Dance honoring warriors & elders.

Inside the rear clamshell doors of one of the visiting Lakota Helicopters are signatures of many of the Indian war veterans who turned out at the Powwow to welcome the Ft. Polk crews.

When out in the Vernon Parish you look up & see a new type of green bird flying overhead, it just might be the Army’s UH72A or as they call it the LAKOTA.

Pictured 1: front view of the UH72A Lakota Helicopter; 2: Rear clamshell doors open showing the Lakota Indian War Veteran’s signatures on one of the two visiting helicopters at the South Dakota Powwow; 3: Four of the nine Lakota Helicopters currently at Ft Polk; 4: a new feature “Auto-Pilot’ for Army Helicopters; 5: Lakota Indian War Veterans & Ft Polk Lakota Crew members in South Dakota; 6: a Ft Polk Lakota Helicopter flies by Chief Crazy Horse’s memorial under construction in South Dakota; 7: the Seal of the Lakota’s unit “A” Company 5th Aviation BN, Ft.
