Fig. 3 (image: Bibliotheque National de France, 1876) Regardless, the department stores had legions of fans. Considering their success, the average Parisian consumer found them a boon. Many had grown tired of limited availability in small shops, which found it difficult to keep up with changing fashions. Ludovic Halevy, a member of the French Academy, wrote in his diary about a young man he encountered in a milliner’s shop. The young dandy evidently was infuriated that the milliner seemed to be continuously crafting the same hats: “Nothing new at all this year!” (Halevy, 171). Among foreigners, who set up department stores of their own shortly after, the French entrepreneurs found wide support. American writers heaped praise on Aristide Boucicaut for his ingenuity and generosity. Nicholas Paine Gilman, in his book Profit Sharing Between Employer and Employee, praises Boucicaut’s attempts to improve the conditions of his fellow salesmen, snidely called “counter-jumpers” in his day: “[Boucicaut] held it a point of honor to…assist those whose talents were not adequate to the attainment of the lucrative post of…superior emplyee” (Gilman, 227). Gilman additionally commends Boucicaut’s efforts in creating investment opportunities for his employees. Madame Boucicaut, as well, receives praise for philanthropy. Caroline Baker, a contributor to the journal of the Chautauqua Institute in New York, a literary and scientific society, commends the founder’s widow for her magnanimity. She describes her many donations to her employees and the community at large, as well as laud the store for its shopping experience: “If it is so pleasant for those who buy, it is not less so to those who sell” (Baker, 423). George S. Cole’s Complete Dictionary of Dry Goods, generally a dry, dispassionate textbook for the clothing industry, calls “Le Bon Marche” a store that “blends enterprise and philanthropy, individual genius and cooperative thrift…in a way unmatched in history” (Cole, 117). Like Baker, Cole’s entry on the Boucicauts extols their munificence and business genius. British writers as well show favor to Boucicaut and his philanthropy. In the wake of the Siege of Paris that ended the Franco-Prussian War, British charities brought food supplies to distribute to the Parisians. One writer, contributing to Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, described his experiences working in the city for one such charity. Aristide Boucicaut, called by the author “an excellent man, as well as a prodigious linen-draper” (Blackwood’s, 551), allowed the Englishmen to use the ground floor of “Le Bon Marche” as a distribution point, even helping them to dispense food and prevent accidents. For tourists, unfamiliar with the particularities of the small boutiques, the more comprehensive department stores were a godsend. The famed German travel writer, Karl Baedeker, heavily recommends the department stores over the small shops for tourists. In his travel guide to Paris, written for the British visitor, he notes that the department stores “form a very important feature of modern Paris, and…are gradually superseding the smaller shops” (Baedeker, 39). In fact, he warns against visiting small boutiques altogether, as their prices are not fixed and clerks rarely speak English. Signs that read “English Spoken” are often “an attempt to fleece the foreigner” (38). Louise Chandler Moulton, an American visitor to Paris, describes her experiences in a Parisian shop much in the same way. The English-speaking clerk attempts to sympathize with the tourist, but even after a fifty franc reduction in price, Moulton is still aware that both simply wish to cajole her into spending as much money as possible (Moulton, 247). However, she states that “Le Bon Marche” is “perhaps, the most satisfactory for general shopping” (248). Aside from any and all essentials, the store offers dozens of foreign fineries from India, Turkey, and Japan. Hudson Commodore Eight Convertible 1940, 1941, 1942, 1945 Hudsons Hudson's 1940 line was rearranged, rebodied and restyled. Though not innovative, the new look was pleasing and clean, with little side ornamentation and a trendy "prow front" dividing a lower horizontal-bar grille. Hudson added another page to its book of durability triumphs by running more than 20,000 miles at an average speed of 70.5 mph, setting a new American Automobile Association record. Offerings spanned seven series, three wheelbases, and three engines. Smallest were the new 113-inch Traveler and DeLuxe: coupes, Victoria coupes, two- and four-door sedans, a convertible, and convertible sedan. All carried the 175-cid six, now rated at 92 bhp. The 212 engine with 98/102 bhp powered the Country Club Six and a new 118-inch-wheelbase Super Six, plus the two Big Boys. The old 254 straight-eight was still around, now producing 128 bhp. Standard Eights shared the Super Six chassis and full range of body styles. Country Club Eights remained on the 125-inch span but were down to one six-passenger and two seven-passenger sedans. Yet for all this, Hudson volume changed little -- just under 88,000 for the model year -- and red ink flowed again with a calendar-year loss of some $1.5 million. A mild facelift was performed for 1941, when wheelbases were juggled once more: 116 inches for DeLuxe and new entry-level Traveler Sixes, 121 and 128 for Super Six and new Commodore Six and Eight. All series listed two coupes and two sedans. DeLuxe, Super Six, and Commodores also offered convertible sedans. Hudson had held onto that body style longer than most makes, but buyers didn't much want it anymore, and only 200 or so were built this year in each series. Rarer still were the new Super Six and Commodore Eight wagons, Hudson's first: only about 100 of each. Prices ranged from $754 for the Traveler coupe to $1537 for the long-wheelbase Commodore Eight seven-place sedan. As it had for many years, Hudson continued selling a fair number of commercial vehicles. Among seven offerings for '41 was a car-style pickup that now inherited the Big Boy name. Perhaps because many people suspected war was coming, Hudson recorded 1941-model production of close to 92,000 cars, good for nearly $4 million in earnings. But that profit came mainly from defense contracts, which began materializing in early '41 -- a badly needed breather. The 1942 models arrived in August 1941 looking smoother, if chubbier. Running boards were newly hidden, the grille was again lowered and simpler, and fenders became more stylishly fulsome. Hudson's famous white-triangle logo graced each side of the prow, and lit up with the headlamps to aid after-dark identification. Offerings were broadly the same, but wagons were departing, and a new Commodore Custom Eight listed a lush 121-inch-wheelbase coupe and 128-inch six-seater sedan in the $1300-$1400 range. All prices nudged upward, the minimum now above $800. The government-ordered turn to war production in February 1942 ended the firm's model-year car output at just under 41,000. Among them were a handful of Hudson's last four-door convertibles. Hudson's contributions to winning World War II included "Helldiver" aircraft, "Invader" landing-craft engines, sections for B-29 bombers and Aircobra helicopters, and a variety of naval munitions. The company made small wartime profits, then quickly resumed production after V-J Day. A total of 4735 cars put Hudson fifth for calendar 1945, a spot it hadn't held since 1934 -- and would not hold again. Takahashi Brothers Akihiro hopelessly shows his payment slip and his younger brother Kenji stares. The brothers are disappointed with the lack of opportunity to challenge themselves again as they lament unfairness based on social divide and financial instability. Takahashi Brothers Akihiro Takahashi 24 and his younger brother Kenji Takahashi 22 fire on cigarette and have a long drug as they see their payment slip for this month. They cannot stop wondering if they just had a little bit of more money to get better life. Both of them are tired of deploring their fate anymore. Kenji sighs and said, “We don’t know what’s around the corner about my future…” In recent years, the accession of the number of nonpermanent employee is one of the major social issues in Japan. In fact, the number has been increasing from 18.5% to 33.4% since 2001 to 2007. The significant accession sheds light on emotional appeal of young generation who cannot be permanent employee even they want to. Akihiro now works as a temporary staffing at mobile shop and Kenji works as a part-time worker at convenient store. Both of them are not regular employment and afraid of its financial instability Their monthly salary doesn’t even reach 200,000 yen (?830) and only 30,000 yen is left for them to spend after putting money into family account, taxes and so on. Akihiro says, “Our lives are difficult. We want to earn more money if we can…People say to us to find employment which offers better salary but it is so hard for us to find out… The intermediate recruitment is hard for us since we don’t have academic background.” Kenji adds, “In this country, only new university graduates can have many options for job. What I strongly feel is there are not many chances for people like us to start over.” The Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has stated his commitment to make society in which people who fail can have a chance to try again. But the number of intermediate recruitment from part-time is hard as its possibility has declined 75.8% to 57% in over five years. The reality of employment destabilization has leaded more unfairness and disappointing for socially vulnerable people. The life of Takahashi brothers could have been different if they went to university. But there was reason they could not continue studying. Akihiro said, “I was one of top students at high school and I got the scholarship for university. But my parents got divorced and my father left house. I was faced to be backbone of the family... I thought I could study later then.” However as he stared working he realized he could not afford for education. What upset him more was the contents of education supporting system by the government, which bears about 25% interest. “How can I pay back that much of money to the government? I was so sad when I knew this country don’t even care they might destroy someone’s possibility.” So the younger brother Kenji automatically was also faced to give up for going to university and tried to find a job to support family after he graduated from high school. He said, “But it was not easy to find what I want to do. So all I could was just blaming my fate…Now I want to study food science to work in its field. But the school fee is crazy. Anyway if I study, I can’t have time to earn money for my family.” The grim reality of a vicious circle confront to the brothers even though they wish to challenge new things. Also as their misfortune followed another, his grandfather broke down by heart disease four years ago and has been confined to his bed since then. “We put our bedridden grandfather into a nursing room. Then we got financial demands of treating him in the cost of health care.” Akihiro said. The pension is too little to live for a month. It is not enough for them to support the grandfather. This incident leaded more tough reality to their family. Their mother Reiko 51, who has been suffering backache for ages, was faced to work to aid family livelihood. Now she works at supermarket as a part-time jobber for 6 days. She said, “My children don’t complain their fate anymore so I don’t whine my backache.” But she worries its unstable livelihood and the reality her children have to give up for what they want to do for their life. “As a mother it is hard to see how my children are suffering because I got divorced... But it is hard for me to find the proper job as well so I need their help. I am quite anxious about my children and their future,” she said. Meanwhile the family’s big worry is the grandmother Tamiko 83. Kenji said, “She has to go to the nursing home to look after the grandfather. But she has chronic disease on her leg and cannot walk well. I am so worried about her… I always thin if I had a car.” “She has to walk to the bus stop and the nursing home. She gets free monthly ticket but it is still burden for her to go there everyday. But the taxi fare is not cheap. I wonder if the government offers good welfare service fo One Week One Day. It was powered by Oldsmobile's 4.0 L L47 Aurora V8 DOHC engine. It has 320 hp (324 PS) at 6500 rpm, 290 lb-ft at 5000 rpm and will do 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds and records 12.8 seconds in the quarter mile at 112 mph (180 km/h). Top speed is 170 mph (273.5 km/h) 15 mph (24 km/h) faster than the 427 Shelby Cobra. The 1998 car weighed 1,202 kg (2,650 lb). The Series 1 is the only car ever produced by Carroll Shelby from a clean sheet of paper, and built from the ground up. All other Shelbys are re-engineered models produced by other manufacturers and modified by Shelby. Prior to production of the Series 1, significant costs were incurred in testing and certification required to conform to 1999 Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Once completed, a total of 249 production Series 1 were constructed by Shelby American, Inc., all as 1999 models.[1] During production, Venture Corporation purchased Shelby American, Inc. The purchase included the Series 1 model, but not the rights to produce the "Continuation Series" Shelby Cobras. In 2004, after a subsequent bankruptcy by Venture Corporation (unrelated to the acquisition of Shelby American), Carroll Shelby's new company, Shelby Automobiles, Inc.., purchased the Series 1 assets for pennies on the dollar. Included in the asset purchase were enough components to produce several more complete Series 1's. Because the 1999 Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards certificate had expired, and the cost to re-certify the car was prohibitive, all Series 1's produced after that date were completed as "component cars" and delivered with no engine or transmission. Those "component car" models built in 2005 are identified with a seven digit vehicle identification number (VIN) and were designated with a CSX5000 series serial number. The original 249 were production cars with a seventeen digit VIN. The Series 1 was produced in both supercharged and normally aspirated versions (but supercharger was optional). Supercharged cars were also outfitted by the factory with larger brakes and a heavy duty clutch. Performance is in the "supercar" category with a 0-60 time at 3.2 seconds. Nicely optioned, Series 1 had power steering, power disc brakes, factory air conditioning, power windows, and an AM/FM/CD audio system. The convertible top folded away out of sight in a compartment located behind the cockpit. Some component cars were sold as a roadster with no convertible top. The Series 1 had dual wishbone suspension with coil-over remote reservoir dampers mounted inboard, and actuated by "rocker arms". The engine was mounted completely behind the front axle and drove a drive shaft supported in a "torque tube" that spun a 6 speed ZF trans-axle specially modified for the Series 1. The chassis was made of extruded and formed 6061 aluminum. It was welded together and then posted heat treated for maximum strength throughout. Then aluminum honeycomb panels specially designed were bonded into the floor boards and rocker panels for added structure and stiffness. The body panels were carbon fiber and fiberglass laminate. The engine, torque-tube, trans-axle, and damper mounts were all rubber isolated from the frame. The supercharged prototypes produced near 600 bhp and 530 lb-ft of torque. The Goodyear Eagle F1 tires were based on an IMSA racing "rain tire" that had been used for the "show car" model. Goodyear built custom tires for the car. Geneva Motor Show 2011 - Shelby 2011 Rear Much like the 2011 V6 and GT Mustangs, the 2011 Shelby GT500 gets an engine update with an all-new 5.4 L aluminum engine which is 102 pounds lighter than the previous cast-iron engine and uses Ford-patented plasma-coating technology (Plasma transferred wire arc). The inventors of PTWA received the 2009 IPO National Inventor of the Year award. This technology was initially patented and developed by inventors from Flame-Spray. The technology was subsequently improved upon by Ford and Flamespray.[27] With the engine updates, not only has performance improved to 550 horsepower and 510 ft.lb. of torque, but the GT500's gas milage improves enough to eliminate the U.S. Gas Guzzler Tax.[28]. Production of the 2011 Shelby GT500 was limited to 5500 units.[29] Ford also improved upon the handling characteristics of the GT500. The overall stance of the car has been lowered by 11 millimeters in front and 8 millimeters at the rear. The car also features Ford's new Electric Power Assist Steering (EPAS) that improves torque build-up and road feel which delivers quicker and more precise steering, increased effort on the racetrack or winding roads, and reduced effort in low-speed parking maneuvers. The car also has Ford's AdvanceTrac stability control system. External improvements include an optional SVT Performance Package, which includes Goodyear EagleF1 SuperCar G: 2 tires, all-new lightweight 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels in front and 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels at the rear, a 3.73 rear axle ratio, and performance tuned front and rear shocks along with stiffer springs. The package includes a unique rear spoiler Gurney Flap for improved handling, slightly revised front and rear fascias, a new pedal box for improved clutch use, slotted brake dust shields for improved brake cooling, standard HID (high-intensity discharge) headlamps, MyKey programmable vehicle key, integrated spotter mirrors, and fold-down rear headrests. Optional is a glass top roof, previously available, starting in 2009, with the Mustang GT. The improvements in handling and performance gives the 2011 Shelby GT500 a skidpad rating of 1.0G, and a Virginia International Raceway lap time of 2:58:48, making it as fast, and sometimes faster, than cars such as the M3, Audi R8 V10, Dodge Viper SRT-10 and Porsche GT3 around this racetrack [30] Similar posts: purchase car tires duro tires review guildford tyre services goodyear tires mtr las vegas tire stores toyo tires toronto off road wheel and tyre packages fleet farm tires prices |

Some Terrible Is Upon Us... Despite the jovial mood of everything where I was 'stationed', there were riots and twenty-one people were arrested. I don't like violence, it is dirty.....but so is corruption and stupidity... I missed the riot and when I left home this morning to the news that yes, a bomb had been found on a Dublin bus, I was expecting to walk into loud and undiluted chaos....a mass of anger at the apathy of a thoughtless government.... Because I was at the IMF protests with my sister and I saw real anger and real emotion...we have been pulled apart by our own leaders here in tired old Ireland, and the lives of so many people have been trodden on simply because of greed and heartlessness.... I was expecting to run for cover and the guards themselves had prepared themselves for trouble but we have become lazy and careless. Ireland has put up with murder and tyranny for 850 years and now the government here has just squandered 30 million euro so the same monarchy can go for a stroll, while people lose jobs and businesses close..... Old friends were made here, sharing a cold drink and some gossip, with the need for gasoline a handy excuse. Song For The Road Song for the Road Well the day casts down Lengthy shadows on unfamiliar towns I drove 300 miles from the place I call home And I tip my hat to the angel of the North And the sun sets fire to the heavens On the hills over Sheffield tonight And I'll sail over this countryside with new friends and old And we are no where, but man, we're alright So you can keep your belief in whatever I'll wear my cynicism like a tattoo While poets try to engineer definitions of love You know all I can think of is you And I can't wait to see you on Sunday Far from the traffic and the smoke and the noise For this evening I will play back every message that you sent And I will sleep to the sound of your voice Now I don't like using words like forever But I will love you til the end of today And in the morning when I remember everything that you are I know I'll fall for you over again I know someday this all will be over And it's hard to say what most I will miss Just give me one way to spend my last moments alive And I'll choose this, I'll choose this, I'll choose this I'll choose this, I'll choose this, I'll choose this I'll choose this, I'll choose this, I'll choose this Oman 215 Wahiba Sands driving Similar posts: cooper tire discoverer stt go kart wheels and tires dartford tyres average cost of tire rotation interco reptile atv tires goodyear tire company history tire size numbers what do they mean |

The Other Canadian Currency 51/365, 20-Feb-2011 Canadian Tire suggested recently that it will soon discontinue the use of Canadian Tire money, introduced in Toronto in 1958 and nationally in 1961. I was cleaning out my wallet on Sunday and with nothing else to photograph for my project, thought it would be nice to include some in my 365 album. I decided to play around with my 50mm lens...one I need to learn a lot more about. From Wikipedia: Canadian Tire money (CTM) is a loyalty program by Canadian Tire. It consists of coupons, issued by the company, which resemble real currency (although the coupons are considerably smaller than Bank of Canada notes), and can be used as scrip in Canadian Tire stores, but is not considered a private currency. The notes are printed on paper similar to real Canadian currency, and were jointly produced by two of the country’s long established security printers, British American Banknote Company (BABN) and Canadian Bank Note Company (CBN). Some privately owned businesses (in Canada) accept CTM as payment,, since the owners of many such businesses shop at Canadian Tire. hours of waiting in zurich airport i wrote this in my sleep deprived state (which i'm about to fix after these photos). --- In the Zurich airport, 10am here and my computer tells me that it should be 4am for my body. So far, the airport has lots of (swatch) watches, (lindt) chocolate, booze, and shuttle trains that moo. Yes, moo, and I have no idea why. I’m very sleepy! I couldn’t get to sleep at all on the flight over here. The plane was nice, the legroom was not nice. We were fed a pretzel snack, drink, then full dinner five minutes after the snack (??). i had the ravioli. Then there were more drink carts and then we got fruit and banana bread for breakfast around 630am. Each seat back had a teeny tv where you could either watch a few different movies with headphones or look at a real time map of where the plane was, how fast it was going and all. That was fun, until we flew over nova scotia and it was all ocean from there on out. I watched the miniature plane icon fly near Ireland FOREVER and then over france. The girl behind me kept kicking my seat and I was tired but just couldn’t quite fall asleep. My view right now looks pretty much like any american airport, just with more red swiss flags and cooler airplanes from Thailand. All the exit signs depict a man running for his life. Everything is in german first, then English. However I am hearing lots of different languages and the departures seem to go every place in the world. They take euros here but they use swiss francs, which are $1.50 to the euro. Imagine my confusion when my lunch price was $11.50 and I only had to hand over a 10 euro to get plenty of change back! Also, I am the only person wearing flip flops here, but I had a feeling that would happen. I am sitting with Lauren the Travel Buddy until we find out our gate number (they don’t display gate numbers til an hour before your flight) but there are only three areas to the airport, sooo I’ve been reading my guidebook to Florence. I am sure I will read this later and be like “wow, I must have been tired, this makes no sense.” A Hubodometer This is a hubodometer which is a device mounted on the axle of an automobile or other vehicle that measures distance traveled. The whole device rotates with the wheel except for an eccentrically mounted weight on an internal shaft. This remains pointing downwards and drives the counting mechanism as the body of the hubometer rotates round it. The hubodometer is used on bus wheels where the tires are supplied to the bus operator by an independent company on a contract of "price per thousand kilometers". The hubometer is installed by the tire company to give them their own measure. The first hubodometers were designed by Engler which was later bought by Stemco and sold under the brand of Stemco Engler Hubodometers finally ending with the Stemco Hubodometer in the early 80's. The first hubodometer with no moving parts was made by Stemco and released in 2002 under the name DataTrac. After years, or even just a few months, the hubodometer can clock up hundreds of thousands of miles and so it's rather nice to see this one here with just 108 miles on the clock. On this the first day for this Lothian Airlink bus this probably will have been the distance from the boat on the west coast of Scotland (after the journey from Ireland).
