Meagan - High Fashion Shoot

Took this at the high fashion shoot we recently had with the East Coast Artists. The ever amazing Laura Marino weaved her magic yet again on styling and makeup. Had a hard time with this shoot - as I usually do in the studio. The model, Meagan, saved my butt here, really working the concept.

I really like the wrap-around light from overexposing the background. Think I'll work this concept a bit in the future.

NYC - Greenwich Village: Brown Building - Triangle Shirtwaist Factory/Fire plaques

NYC - Greenwich Village: Brown Building - Triangle Shirtwaist Factory/Fire plaques

Now a New York University science building, this tan brick and terra cotta neo-Renaissance-style loft building was built in 1900-01 by John Wooley for investor Joseph J. Asch. In 1911, it was the site of one of the worst industrial disasters in America that led to sweeping labor form.

The two-story base is articulated by fve massive piers treated as banded pilasters. Because it was only 135 feet tall, it was allowed to have wood floors, window frames and trim instead of the metal trim and frames with concrete floors that would have been required with an addition 15 feet.

Two Russian-born Jewish immigrants--Max Blanck and Isaac Harris--established the Triangle Waist Company on Wooster Street. They specialized in making shirtwaists, a high-necked blouse with a tight waist and puffy sleeves, which came into fashion around 1890. At the turn of the century 40,000 workers (four of five of whom were women) were employed in the manufacturer of shirtwaists. In 1901, the Triangle Waist Company moved into the 8th floor of the Asch Building. Within a few years they took over the 9th and 10th floors. By 1908, their profit had exceeded $1 million and they were acknowledged noot only as the leading shirtwaist makers in the city but some of the worst employers in the industry. Employees were locked in during extended work hours, without breaks. Talking and singing were forbidden. Bathroom breaks were monitored. Fines were levied for erros. Workers had to buy their own needles and thread.

With a nationwide economic downturn, labor relations worsened. A strike involving 200 workers at the Rosen Brothers shirtwaist factory in 1909, resulting in Local 25 of the International LAdies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) unionizing the factory and negotiating a 20% pay hike, emboldened other workers to organize. When Blanck and Harris got word that 100 of their workers held a meeting regarding conditions, they laid them off as well as sympathizers, which led the leaders of Local 25 to declare a strike. Eventually 20,000 to 30,000 shirtwaist workers in New York went on a strike that lasted 13 weeks and resulted in raised salaries, a 52-hour work week and limited required overtime. Triangle refused to recognize the union and although they raised wages to match the pay scale refused to meet other demands about locked doors and better fire escapes.

On March 25, 1911, at about 4:35pm, a fire erupted in one of the huge piles of scraps stored beneath the cutting tables on the 8th floor of the Triangle factory. The fire spread and the room was engulfed with smoke and flames. Most of the workers on the 8th floor escaped, but noone notified the 260 workers on the 9th floor. While all but one of 70+ on the 10th floor, without fire drill preparation the 9th floor wasn't as lucky. As those workers frantically tried to escape, barrel of machine oil exploded cutting off the exit. A drop ladder on the 70" wide fire escape was never installed and as women crowded onto it, the heat of the fire combined with the weight of fleeing workers caused it to buckle and collapse, leaving only the elevators as a means of exit. When they became inoperable, the workers were left with two options: jump or burn to death.

25 minutes after the first alarm, the fire was under control. 146 workers would die in the blaze or from resulting injuries. Two weeks later, the district attorney brought an indictment against Blanck and Harris. Their trial ended in an acquittal, they paid the victim's family a week's pay and they re-opened their business in 1911. A civil sit was settled at $75 per lost life in 1914. The company eventually shut down in 1914.

As a result of the tragedy, the ILGWU worked with local officials, like Al Smith and Robert F. Wagner, and progressive reformers, such as Frances Perkins, the future Secretary of Labor in the Roosevelt administration, who had witnessed the fire from the street below, and pushed for comprehensive safety and workers’ compensation laws.

The Asch Building itself survived relatively intact. In 1918, NYU leased and remodeled the 9th floor and then a year later took over the 10th. It was purchased in 1920 by Washington-Bleecker Properties and NYU slowly took over more floors in the 1920's. In 1929, Percy S. Straus, president of **Macy's**, approached Frederick Brown, who acquired the building on NYU's behalf, saving the university $92k in annual rent. On April 22, the building renamed the Frederick Brown Building. It continued to serve as a classroom and laboratory building for NYU, with the 8th floor used for WWII training.

In 1961, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the fire, the ILGWU installed a plaque at the corner of Washington Place and Green Street.

The Brown Building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission on November 19, 2002. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1991.

WHAT IF? Braniff International DC-10 Series 30 "Big Watermelon"

WHAT IF? Braniff International DC-10 Series 30

In Braniff's history, I have always considered 1965 the start of Braniff's zenith. And what better way to introduce that period than a revolutionary and complete makeover that brought high style and fashion to airline travel? There was a certain brashness and flamboyance that came with the image makeover that resonates to this day with airline enthusiasts. While I could wax nostalgiac for pages on what the Braniff cachet brought to the airline industry, I'll spare you my ramblings about one of my favorite airlines........but back to the history lesson......

With the dawn of a new era at Braniff in 1965, a period of impressive growth followed- in 1966 Panagra was acquired allowing Braniff's expansion into South America (and long-time keystone of Braniff's international routes) with complete integration of the Panagra operation completed in 1967. In 1968 Braniff set up shop in the landmark "Terminal of the Future" at Dallas Love Field along with the Braniff Jet Rail, the first monorail dedicated to shuttling passengers to the terminal from the parking areas. 1969 saw Braniff go all-pure jet with the retirement of the Lockheed Electras and in that same year Braniff would open up comprehensive service to 13 South American cities, Hawaii and many US gateways. Braniff's 707-327Cs were also heavily tasked with military trooping charters originating at Travis AFB, California to various points throughout the Pacific to support the effort in Vietnam. In 1971, the first Boeing 747 arrived, ushering in luxurious services to Hawaii and in 1972 Braniff standardizes its domestic fleet on the 727.

I have always found interesting that Braniff, alone among the US majors, never acquired widebody trijets. Everyone else was stepping over themselves to get either the Tristar or the DC-10, but Braniff alone stuck with the 747 as its widebody equipment with a large capacity gap between the 707s/727s/DC-8s and the 747 that I'd always figured that the DC-10 fit nicely. In 1969-1970 Braniff was in precarious financial straits and load factors had dropped to 40%. Employees were laid off, cuts were made and at the time McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed were approaching prospective customers about their ordering their aircraft, Braniff simply didn't have the money. McDonnell Douglas had prepared artwork showing the DC-10 in the blue Jellybean/Girard colors and Lockheed had a model made showing the Tristar in the yellow Jellybean/Girard livery.

It does beg the question of whether or not Braniff might have done better or at least lasted a bit longer had their widebody choice fell upon the DC-10 (or even Tristar). At any rate, it's this historical curiosity that I set as a background to this illustration.

The liveries are based on what Braniff's 747s wore when they first entered service in the 1970s featuring a solid single orange color in contrast to the two-tone scheme used on the 727, 707, and DC-8 fleet under the "Flying Colors" banner.

Braniff's 747s never flew in the solid green scheme though there is a persistent urban legend of sorts of a single 747 having received the colors but never got delivered to the airline. This gave rise to the "Big Watermelon" nickname in contrast to the 747's nickname "Big Orange". We've had a lot of discussions about this on Airlinebuzz in the past, but most hard-core Braniff aficionados discount the existence of "Big Watermelon".

My personal theory? At some point in the 1970s a group of Braniff dignitaries were taken on a factory tour at Everett and a 747 under construction still in its green protective coating is pointed out to them as "That's one we're building for Braniff" and the Big Watermelon legend is born.....

But I couldn't resist doing one of the DC-10s in the solid green colors anyway......!

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING IRON MAN - IRON PYRITES

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING IRON MAN - IRON PYRITES

(BEST YE SEA THIS LARGE MATEYS, AYE!!!)

Severely diminished in stature by an accidental dose of miniaturising Pym Particles the Incredible Shrinking Iron Man regularly overflew the water recycling tank as he patrolled the amazing microverse. So far, Tiny Tony had been able to rescue several wee beasties from deadly danger.

Heavy rains had swelled the tank to capacity and it was now, relative to the armoured techno-knight’s vertically challenged size, a mighty lake.

To Stark’s complete surprise, as he arced over the body of water he spotted a fully rigged Pyrite Ship arrogantly flaunting the dread Jolly Roger!

“Jumpin’ Jack Kirby!” the red and gold Avenger eed, then rocketed down to land with an authoritative ‘CLANK!!’ on the buccaneer’s wooden deck. Game for a fight, the Pyrite crew scowled their defiance as Iron Man prepared to deliver hot repulsor justice to the scurvy sons of sea rocks; part payment for all of the sorry souls they had themselves dispatched to Davy Jones’ Locker.

For one brief, breathless moment, while the Pyrites drew their cutlasses and pistols, the sun glinted on Shellhead’s harsh exterior, Ironically reminding the scoundrels of the treasure chests that lay below decks crammed with bullion, jewels and plundered booty.

Though the cruel Pyrites did not lack for stones they nevertheless trembled in their sea boots and understood, too late, that their blood soaked riches might as well have been Fool’s Gold for all the good they would do them now.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Old fashioned Pirates and Piracy have been over romanticised in modern pop culture. Far from the likes of the admittedly charming whimsy of Captain Jack Sparrow lurk the contemporary thuggish bands of sea-thieves in their small, fast boats, raiding from coastal and island bases to snap up passing merchant and passenger shipping. The brutal reality of modern day Piracy is a surprising and often deadly maritime hazard even in the 21st Century.

I’d just been reading about the Somali Pirates who have been preying upon passing shipping when it started to rain heavily, prompting thoughts of a watery photoshoot.

The little toy ship was quite hard to rig as the Iron Pyrites made it top heavy and indeed, a few seconds after I nailed the shot to its yardarm, it capsized, spilling one of the Pyrites overboard where it plunged straight to the bottom of the tank. End of photoshoot!

It was gusting something fierce when I was trying to get this shot in between rain showers and the small plastic sails kept rocking the boat. To stabilise the ship it was necessary to mount it on wire moorings clamped to the rim of the tank. The water was nearly invisible against the black plastic tank sides but floating dust and other particles showed up well, rendering the dark depths rather like a starfield, an effect I was happily surprised by.

Iron Man/Tony Stark is no friend of Pirates, having suffered at their hands a number of times during his career. Besides, they’re bad for business, even in his former trade as an arms dealer, since they seldom pay for their weapons.
