Well, Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot was born in Paris. Brigitte is a former French fashion model, actress and singer.

In her early life, Brigitte was an aspiring ballet dancer. She started her acting career in 1952 and after appearing in 16 films, became world-famous due to her role in her then-husband Roger Vadim's controversial film 'And God Created Woman'.

She starred in Jean-Luc Goddard's 1963 cult film 'Contempt'.

Bardot caught the attention of French intellectuals. She was the subject of Simone de Beauvoir's 1959 essay, 'The Lolita Syndrome', which described Brigitte as a 'locomotive of women's history', and built on existentialist themes to declare her the first and most liberated woman of post-war France.

She retired from the entertainment industry in 1973. During her career she starred in 47 films and recorded 80 songs.

After her retirement, Brigitte established herself as an animal rights activist.

At the time of writing (15 Sept. 2011) she is still going strong at the age of 76, shortly to be 77.

Josiah Parsons Cooke (October 12, 1827 – September 3, 1894), son of laywer Josiah Parsons Cooke and Mary Pratt, was an American scientist who worked at Harvard University and was instrumental in the measurement of atomic weights, inspiring America's first Nobel laureate in chemistry, Theodore Richards, to pursue similar research. Cooke's 1854 paper on atomic weights has been said to foreshadow the periodic law developed later by Mendeleev and others. Historian I. Bernard Cohen described Cooke "as the first university chemist to do truly distinguished work in the field of chemistry" in the United States.
Life and work

Josiah Parsons Cooke was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1827. He attended Boston Latin School and as a teenager set up his own chemical laboratory, partly due to an interest sparked by lectures of Yale's Benjamin Silliman. The teaching of chemistry at Harvard was in poor shape at this time, so after Cooke entered the university in 1843 he continued to be largely self-taught in the subject. Cooke graduated from Harvard in 1848 with an A.B., and became a mathematics tutor there the following year. In 1850 he was elected the Erving Professor of Chemistry and Mineralogy at Harvard, although he had had little formal education in chemistry.

He married Mary Hinkley Huntingdon, daughter of Elisha Huntingdon and Hannah Hinkley on 6 September, 1861. Mary was born on 3 September, 1833, in Lowell, Massachusetts. She died 21 May, 1911. They had no children.

HIGHLIGHTS ON OUR PROGRAMME ON HIV/AIDS:
Red Location Museum, in collaboration with it's partner, the World Culture Museum is presenting the NoNameFever-uGawulayo; Exhibition at Red Location Museum from 14 December 2007 to the end of November 2008.

It is alarming to note that according to latest UNAID figures (19 November 2007) that of the 33.2 million people who are currently globally living with HIV, a staggering 18.8 million come from South Africa!

Since 1981, an estimated number of 24 million people died from the disease in South Africa. This means that our nation has gone through tremendous suffering - as almost every South African is affected in some way by the disease. 71 % of deaths between the age of 15 and 49, is caused by HIV.

Many of us fondly remember people like Nkosi Johnson, the child activist who lived with HIV - and who through his passion and motivational speeches - managed to break down stigmas and misconceptions against people living with the disease. There are scores of many unmentioned and precious people who are now no longer with us.

Have you noticed how many children still fall pregnant, despite the availability of condoms and the HIV campaigns? Certainly, now is the time for us to be alerted and to stand together, like the times when we were mobilised against Apartheid, and combat this disease through our morals, attitudes and involvement...

There are various Red Location Museum programmes which will be focussing on HIV during the next year:
- The live transmission of the 46664 concert at Red Location Museum on 1 December 2007, from 7:00pm
- The Hope Worldwide SA Debate scheduled with the Youth at Red Location Museum on 6 December from 12:00pm
- A contemporary Art Exhibition of local Nelson Mandela Bay artists - where their souls deeply reflect and ponder on HIV/AIDS. This exhibition opens on 12 December and will run until 30 January 2008
- A Streetart event where the public is invited to join in and through pastels creations on Olof Palme Street speak out about HIV/AIDS on 13 December 2007 from 10:00am
- The main event, NoNameFever -uGawulayo Exhibition, which opens on 14 December and will run until the end of November 2008
- A Fashion Show on HIV which will take place at the Museum on 16 December from 2:00pm
- A Poetry and Rapping session on 17 December 2007 from 2:00pm

Too Fast

Small selection of quick photos from a Fashion show in April, these designs are from Temna Fialka, awesome as usual! The show went over really well and I had a really great time with everyone there.

I just wanted to share these photos, not because they're overly interesting, but because they took about 1 minute to set up and take! It was sort of an experiment on my part, for many reasons (tight spaces, tight on time and the fact that the venue opened the back area to regular guests on us...) we were having some trouble getting our studio gear to have the look we really wanted from the shots. It could have easily been achieved if there was a bit more time, but there just wasn't, and to make matters worse it was basically a gong show at that point. So run and gun! I asked Mario if he had is iPad handy so we could see how it looked, high ISOs, but it looked neat. So we grabbed a few models quickly and used the iPad to light them up as our main light. The rest is just ambient. Of course if there was time to have control over lighting, and control over everything else, we could have come away with some really spectacular stuff.

For what we had, and how we had to work it, I was pretty happy with the (really) quick results we got. Literally... a minute each from the time the camera came out, to the time it went away again. Woo! Haha. Let's hope we have more time on the next go around!

More Winged Friends

Today's grainy shot is of me aimlessly roaming the Lodge. After a tumbler of toe tingling scotch I crept (and there really isn't a better word for my usual gait) through the building to stretch my legs. The conversation downstairs had centered on mens wristwatches, my noticeable lack of one, and how they differed (if at all) from other status items. Some men collect watches, shoes, bongs, or even scabs, whereas I collect ties. They're easily storable, never a worry about sizing, and no one else ever wears them if they can help it. I had been considering these ideas on my stroll when I remembered my duty to document the day's outfit- and the day was dangerously close to over, so I had better get on with it.

Today's tie is an autumnal wonder: a large embroidered scene of pheasants in a thicket of dead trees. The kind of thing I would have associated with uncles sporting liver spots, who always entered the room in a scent cloud of cigarettes and moth balls. Pheasant is, of course, a traditional British Christmas entree (so, with all European dinners, are cigarettes, and moth balls: France only), so his appearance on seasonal garb is welcomed. How I might, this holiday, fit such culinary exotica into my exclusive diet of pizza is uncertain.

The vest is one of those Target specials I'm so fond of. Boxy but the lack of tailoring is justified by the low price. The trousers are pleated. And on the subject- any argument among about pleated vs plain front mens trou is moot. "Both" is the correct answer. Just not on the same pair. The idea that one is in fashion or out is a ridiculous retailer fantasy. Ignore it.

What!? A portrait by Steve!? ....uhhhh, maybe! I'm looking in the little round mirror and trying to see me, myself as I am. Not easy! I am very unpracticed at this. Doesn't look much like me yet. I'm trying to create a real sea-change in my work and have started the underpainting in black, white, ivory and red oxide Golden acrylics (regular, not Open). Well, actually, the black is W+N Galeria. I've had a jar of it forEVER! So, stay tuned to see what happens with this little 16 x 12 inch (approx. 40.6 x 30.5 cm) painting.
