Phone edit and post processing

Phone edit and post processing

So just another sunset. This one is somewhat interesting because of how it was edited. I shot it on my dslr then beamed it to my phone via a special wireless sd memory card. Then I did all the editing and post processing on my phone! Never used a computer for the whole process! Granted the quality took a bit of a hit, but still pretty awesome what I can do out in the "field" without having to lug a computer around.

Day 208 - Mapping the course

Day 208 - Mapping the course

We're down to our final 2 days here in New York.

On Monday we're packing up the car and hitting the road. Our Triptik from AAA arrived last week so I started mapping out the course for our cross country road trip and booking the hotels. This is going to be more affordable than I expected. The average motel/hotel (with the AAA discount) costs about 35-50$ a night and they all have FREE WIRELESS INTERNET SERVICE. So I'll be able to update daily from the road. I really love the idea of being able to take all my friends on FLICKR with me on this trip via the internet.

We're going to be driving for 42 hours and is an estimated 3,780 miles from our front door in New York to John's front door in San Francisco. The biggest cost will be the gas, around 300$.(at least!!)

This is our trip plan so far - We're taking the Lincoln Highway (I-80) all the way across the country.

Day 1 - Driving to Ohio. Motel booked.

Day 2 - Illinois. Motel booked.

Day 3 - Nebraska. Motel Booked

Day 4 - Wyoming. Motel Booked

Day 5 - Reno, Nevada. STILL LOOKING FOR A MOTEL -- Any sestions?

Day 6 - San Francisco

We have to pack all the essentials into one big box, squeeze our computer into the backseat as well. The top of the car will have all of our clothing, the trunk will be filled with spare tires, oil, water, car supplies..etc.

I can't express how excited I am about this road trip, it's something I've always dreamed about doing and a once in a lifetime opportunity. I'm just praying that our car makes it. Like I said before...It's 10 years old and has over 190,000 miles on it.. but it runs great. I have my fingers crossed. We're limiting our driving to about 8 hours each day and pacing ourselves..

I keep thinking that there's something I'm forgetting, I've never taken a road trip like this before. I have this overwhelming feeling of constant anticipation and excitment, mixed with a touch of nervousness. There is so much to do and so much to wrap up before Monday.

Only one more day, I don't know how we'll manage to do all of it. I better get back to packing... instead of updating my flickr page, you think? I just really needed a break, I'm exhausted... I want to just fall over backwards and pass out.

Alright.... back to filling and duct-taping up the boxes.

Athletes' Village apartments - Olympic Park, Stratford, London 2012 Olympic Games

Athletes' Village apartments - Olympic Park, Stratford, London 2012 Olympic Games

Olympic Park, Stratford, London E20
Sunday 21 August 2011

During the Games
The vibrant Athletes' Village will be located in the Olympic Park, within walking distance of the venues – enhancing the experience of athletes and officials. During the Games, the Athletes' Village will comprise residential apartments for around 17,000 athletes and officials, along with shops, restaurants, medical, media and leisure facilities and large areas of open space.

The Village will also include a 'Village Plaza’ where athletes can meet with friends and family. The plan retains London's tradition of building homes around communal squares and courtyards, with water features accentuating the closeness of the River Lea. Athletes will have an inspirational view over the Park. Every apartment will provide comfortable accommodation and state-of-the-art communications facilities, including internet access and wireless networking. All the apartment blocks will be fully accessible and equipped with modern lifts.

Athletes will have easy access to the travel and leisure facilities of the adjacent Stratford City complex, and the High Speed 1 Javelin® shuttle service will link the Village to central London in just seven minutes. During the Games, the Village will include ‘back of house’ operations, and services for athletes such as catering and transport. The majority of these will be accommodated in temporary structures on sites that can be cleared for development immediately after the Games.

After the Games
After the Games, the Athletes' Village will be a lasting legacy of essential new housing for east London. It will be transformed into 2,800 new homes, including 1,379 affordable homes.
The communities that develop in the area after the Games will be supported by new parks, open space, transport links, and community facilities including Chobham Academy – a world-class new education campus with 1,800 places for students aged 3-19.

Remember when computer communications meant a big bank of modems like this?

If I recall, this was for a car dealership computer network. Or maybe it was K-Mart HQ in Detroit. It all kind of blends together after awhile.

[Edit]: On second (or third or fourth) thought, it couldn't have been K-Mart, because they used satellites for their store-to-HQ communications in the 90s (when this photo was shot). They ran token ring between their MS-DOS POS terminals back to their UNIX servers (486 boxes from Unisys running SVR4) in the back room. The UNIX servers dumped data (via satellite) back to K-Mart HQ with SNA to communicate with IBM servers there. They also encapsulated TCP/IP over LU6.2 for communication between HQ and the local store servers. I wrote (1) the token ring device driver for the UNIX server and (2) the LU6.2-over-TCP protocol tunneling software.

"Stay-cation," My Sweet Tookus

Yes, this is my entire computer set up from work (except the obnoxious speakers) all splayed out on my dining room table.

Long, boring story exactly why my work computer and all its paraphernalia (except the obnoxious speakers) is sitting on my dining room table. I'm posting this, because after carting all that stuff to my car and then dumping it on to my dining table, I thought to myself, "Wow Jon, you really are something of a nerd. Who makes four trips back and forth to his car, needs a special funky mouse, a Wacom tablet, five external hard drives hanging of his hulking MacPro of Death (internal drive bays full, natch) and a wireless router in his life, JUST TO GET A LITTLE WORK DONE while he's on vacation?"

A ginormous nerd, that's who.

I mean, I've known I was total nerd for a long time, but this brought it into somewhat stark relief.

Also, guess how thrilled my wife is to have all of that sitting on the dining room table?

"But sweetums, at least I left the obnoxious speakers at work."

43/365 Oh Chicago Weather

It's blizzarding today. March 27. Blizzard. Like, snow. Ugh.

When I went to work today at 12, it was just rain. When I looked out the window an hour later, there were big white flakes that were accumulating outside. EVERYONE is tired of the snow. It's time for it to go away. Oh how I do miss the south.

So, mom and I are just sitting at the kitchen table with both of our laptops (thankfully the wireless internet is working again), in the dark, with music (Jack Johnson) blasting through the airtunes (aka the speakers in the kitchen). Our window is showing us a snow painting, and Jack is giving us some chill tunes to type to. It's fun.

Day 18 - envie de meurtre

Day 18 - envie de meurtre

Fell into a sort of exhausted trance on the drive back home from Stuttgart today and snapped out of it in a foul mood. My football team having lost while one man up for 80% of the game did nothing to improve things. The clincher was some awful food I had for dinner; not even beer helped. So I resolved to be unsociable and try to put an image to the feeling.

Not a good idea.

The lighting on this was a bitch to set up and almost did drive me to murder:

* One strobe firing into a pringles can with a slit in the bottom (to make a more concentrated, smaller lightsource), then through some blinds I'd hung up between two tripods for the window-like pattern on the door.

* Taping the knife to the doorhandle at just the right angle for the light from a strobe to bounce into the camera. Then placing said strobe out of sight behind the door, snooting it to restrict the light beam to just the blade (not the door, the wall or the ceiling, which would all have bounced unwanted light back on the scene).

* I finally had to go with ambient light seeping in through the half-opened door rather than the big old diy softbox I'd set up, because I only had two wireless receivers and the optical slave mode on my Yongnuo strobes apparently only works when a sufficiently powerful flash hits the actual head of the flash dead on (no sticking it inside softboxes, snooting it or taking it into broad daylight.)

Strobist Details:
* YN460 @1/32 power with diy straw snoot just behind door pointing up to knife for reflection on blade
* ambient light from next room (shutter to about 1/15 s)
* 430EX II @1/16 into chips can with 1cm wide slit at end to concentrate light, then through blinds to create pattern on door
* triggered by 2 Phottix Tetra wireless units

Would love some feedback on the picture!

Telephone Receivers - The Difference...

Telephone Receivers - The Difference...

LEFT: the more modern 'Receiver, Inset No: 2P' has a flush aluminium (sometimes bakelite) cup insert with the magnet poles protruding from a paxolin panel. A small cloth-covered vent is visible to the top (RHS as shown) and is used for audio coupling. This receiver gives a smoother frequency response and doesn't peak at 1100Hz. It offers a gain of some 10-15db sensitivity above the older type on the right. All this is achieved by using resonant cavities, including that of the outer ear, when sandwiched between receiver and head!

RIGHT: older 'Receiver, Inset No:1L'. This type was superseded by 'Receiver, Inset No:2P' around 1947.

Both units are completely interchangeable. Missing from both receivers (for the photo) are the Stalloy diaphragms.
