In the shine of Charlotte Perriand (revisted) Not so satisfied with the first version, I have re-edited. I hope you like it. Charlotte Perriand (24 October 1903 – 27 October 1999), was a French architect and designer. Her work aimed to create functional living spaces in the belief that better design helps in creating a better society. In her article L’Art de Vivre from 1981 she states “The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living- living in harmony with man’s deepest drives and with his adopted or fabricated environment.” [1] Perriand became known at 24 years of age with "Bar Under the Roof" — furniture made out of chromed steel and anodized aluminium. This was presented at the Salon d'Automne of 1927 and was acclaimed by the critics. Shortly afterward, she was invited to begin a collaboration with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, which would last nearly ten years. She exhibited with them in the Salon d'Automne of 1929, "The Equipment of Habitation: Racks, Seats, Tables ". This furniture would be produced by Thonet and more recently by Cassina. In the 1930s, Perriand’s focus became more egalitarian and populist. Along with designing furniture and living spaces, she was also involved with many leftist organizations such as the Association des Ecrivains et Artistes Revolutionnaires, and Maison de la Culture. She also collaborated with the Jeunes in 1937 and help to found The Union des Artistes Modernes. [2] In her designs from that period, rather than use expensive chrome, she began to use traditional materials, which would be more affordable, and handcrafted techniques which she displayed at the 1935 Brussels International Exhibition.[3] From 1940, onwards, her style was strongly influenced by a long stay in the Far East, and in particular in Japan from 1940 to 1942. The Book of Tea, which she read at this time, also had a major impact on her work, as she referenced it during the rest of her career.[4] Charlotte Perriand took part in the design of the ski resorts of Les Arcs in Savoie, at the same time making her architecture and installations of interiors. In the 1950s she also designed for various corporate service spaces. Since March 2004, Cassina produces the furniture of Charlotte Perriand. More than 200 high school and college students from all over the United States, who were in New Orleans to build houses during spring break, attended the official dedication on St. Patrick's Day. "God is good," an emotional Washington told the cheering crowd. "And y'all are good." Since losing everything to Hurricane Katrina five years ago, Washington's teenage children have been living in other cities in order to attend school. 3 bears these few photos are of an encounter that Annie and I had on the side of the road just south of Hayward WI. We were heading down to see a friend that runs an amazing furniture store, Dressy Log Furniture (check it out) and we happened to see these three on the side of the road. There were several cars lined up and one lady was even throwing lettuce at them. I am a little worried about the closeness of the road, but there is very little that I can do about the situation, except share the photos. Hope you enjoy. Kingdom Tower (Wikipedia) Kingdom Centre in Riyadh is the tallest skyscraper in Saudi Arabia, somewhat resembling a modern bottle opener. With a height of 303 m (992 ft), it is the 24th tallest building in world. The tower is host to the highest mosque in the world. The Kingdom Centre is owned by Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a prince of the Saudi royal family. It is also the headquarters of his holding company: Kingdom Holding Company. The total cost of the project was 2 billion Saudi Arabian Riyals and the contract was taken by Saudi Arabian El Saif and the Italian Impregilo S.P.A. Kingdom Centre is situated in Al-Urubah Road between King Fahd Road and Olaya Street in the growing business district of Olaya in Riyadh. Kingdom Centre was the winner of the 2002 Emporis Skyscraper Award, selected as the "best skyscraper of the world for design". A three-level shopping center, which also won a major design award, fills the east wing. The large opening is illuminated at night in continuously changing colors. Besides the shopping mall, the Centre includes a Four Seasons Hotel and state-of-the-art apartments. It is possible to go up to the 'skybridge' where there are view of the whole city of Riyadh. The ellipse motif taken from the tower's footprint appears also in the light fixtures, ceiling panels, entrance canopy, wastebins, and furniture. The Shopping Mall contains 170 prestigious stores divided as follows: Service Floor (-1) 10 Stores Ground Floor ( 0) 80 Stores First Floor (+1) 40 Stores Ladies Floor (+2) 40 Stores Garden of Zamakat - Sarafovo The feeling of light and space is ensured, by the numerous windows, colour stained glass and the pastel tones, in which the rooms are painted. A man is pleasantly surprised by the furniture - the canopy of the sea over the beds keep the feeling of magic and suggest romance. At the disposal of the guests of the hotel is the bistro Zamakat ("The Castle"). The stained glass of the gleaming ceiling, the mosaic of semi-precius stores, plastics and paintings of famous artists, all figure recreate the deeps. Lake Forest College This is a picture of the Durand Art Institute, which was completed in 1892 by the architect Henry Ives Cobb. I don't like the shadows over the arch. I need to get back to Lake Forest one day so I can do a retake. From the college website: Durand Art Institute, built as the Lake Forest Art Institute Club, has been described by architectural historians as a “stunning” version of the Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style. Durand’s front facade faces the First Presbyterian Church, at the request of its pastor, Reverend McClure, who became president of the College in 1897. From the corner of Deerpath and Sheridan Roads, Durand looks much as it did when it was completed in 1892. Although its steeply pitched gable roof is now made of gray slate, replacing its original red, Durand still links the College campus with the community. Looking like a cross between a medieval church and a castle, Durand is constructed of red sandstone, the large blocks roughly finished in a way that suggests great age. The round recesses filled with sandstone and limestone blocks romantically suggest the facade evolved and changed over the centuries. All this, along with the arched windows, the finials on the roof, and the battered buttresses, recall Romanesque church architecture. But this is a temple of art, originally designed like the Art Institute of Chicago completed the same year, to combine an art exhibition space with a large auditorium. The recessed main entrance is a work of art in itself. Its red sandstone arches gradually get smaller, drawing one’s eyes to the focal point of the door. Notice above the main entrance the owls (symbols of wisdom) standing upon paintbrushes and palettes, symbolizing the combinations of scholarship and art. Above the arches, the name of the primary donor, grocery magnate Henry C. Durand, is engraved in letters intertwined with leaves and pinecones in a style reminiscent of medieval manuscripts. Lake Forest, IL ~ Marshall Field's Department Store In 1928, this was the first suburban branch of Marshall Field's to open. The Lake Forest Market Square is the America’s first planned shopping center in the country (and probably the first downtown urban renewal). The Market Square is an area of 25 shops and restaurants (including an old Marshall Field's) surrounding a park and culminating at the train station. It was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw in 1916. In the Lake Forest Historic District, on the National Register #78001161. 109/365 I've gotten a tad bit behind on updating my 365 photos. This is from Monday. I didn't even have time today to participate in Bench Monday again. Oh well, hopefully next week I can make time! Our patio work started today. All the old street pavers were torn up, and concrete was poured. We were told it could take a couple of days, but the work was finished in one day. Now we just need it to see before we can go out there and enjoy it. It is amazing the transformation it has made to our yard. I'm sure I'll take a photo tomorrow. I should have taken a "before" but I am pretty sure I have one somewhere in my collection. While the patio work was being done I went to the new-ish Home Goods store with my parents. They came up to pick up the rest of the old patio furniture we are getting rid of, so we headed out to do a little shopping while they were here. I bought this little owl for Baby #2. Kenzie has a little "Baby is sleeping" stuffed sign for her bedroom, and I saw this, and thought it was perfect for Baby #2, especially given my love of owls and that it can be for a boy or girl. I made this for my darling grandson's 6th birthday. Made of pine and I used Minwax "Provincial" stain. Pine-oak-eos Once upon a time, a pine and oak furniture shop had the idea to pun on the name Pinnochio and style itself Pine-oak-eos (geddit?). The shop is now long gone and the fascia presents a melancholic juxtaposition of Disneyfied glamour and urban decay.
