DIOGENES24 SAYS IT'S" Ciaron O'Reilly is long time Catholic Worker, nonviolent resister and Christian anarchist. O'Reilly took part in the 1980s civil rights, social justice and free speech movement in Queensland, Australia against Joh Bjelke-Peterson.[1]

During the 1991 Gulf War, O'Reilly was a member of the 'ANZUS Ploughshares' group which attacked a B-52 Bomber which was on 20-minute scramble alert, at Griffiss AFB near Utica, New York. Their actions put the aircraft out of action for the next two months at the height of the US bombing campaign in Iraq. Together with the other members of the group, he was arrested and sentenced to 13 months in the US penal system.[2] After his return to Australia, O'Reilly took part in the 'Jabiluka Ploughshares' group action which disabled uranium mining equipment in the Northern Territory of Australia in 1998.[3]

Together with other members of the Brisbane Catholic Worker, he took an active role in highlighting the involvement and complicity of the Australian government, corporate and military sectors in supporting Indonesia's brutal and illegal 25-year occupation of East Timor.

On July 5, 2006 O'Reilly went to trial at Ireland's Four Courts for a third time for disarming a US navy warplane at the civilian Shannon Airport, in the early hours of February 3 2003.[4] This group action became known as the Pitstop Ploughshares. Two earlier trials in 2005 ended in mistrial.

O'Reilly and four others, Deirdre Clancy, Nuin Dunlop, Karen Fallon and Damien Moran were acquitted by an Irish jury on on 25 July 2006.

Not at ALL the picture I wanted and the quality is shot. My plan for this week will have to wait till week four--and I couldn't get any shots of the duo doing agility like I intended for Plan B. So, you'll just have to enjoy the story that goes with this one.

Indigo is not a dog's dog. He's hardly a person's dog (mine only). He does not play. At the park he runs and he watches his various toys. The dark-haired dynamo on the left is Scout--and Scout DOES play. He is a social butterfly and despite the extra weight which you can't see here, he moves like a bullet. Scout is everyone's best friend and he owns the agility course like no overweight dog I have ever seen. He is completely unflappable. Scout is Indigo's only play friend. I mean, in the right mood he can be convinced to chase after some other dogs, but Scout is the only buddy he will chase and rough-house with at any given moment.

They wreak havoc on the other dogs (and there's a hearty collection of Malinois, some Border Collies, a Smooth Collie and a handful of shepherds that come to these little practice sessions). It is one of the highlights of my week to watch these two rocket through the tunnels and over the equipment in hot pursuit of one another. Considering that Scout's owner is only a friend of a friend of my mother's , they'd never see each other except for their weekly jaunt at practice. Scout makes me think that maybe Indy is a real dog after all. ;)

Harris' Navigation Colliery - 1875

Top highlight.
Later to be named Deep Navigation Colliery. As can be seen, this was a very rural area at this time.
Minerals leased from Colonel Lockwood & others - 4000 acres.
Sinking commenced 1873 by Messrs. Dixon & F.W. Harris and was still in progress at the time of this survey, the celebrated Four Feet seam not being reached until early 1879 at a depth of 700 yds.(6'-0" thick). The two shafts were 17ft. dia.. The contractor was Messrs. Brown & Adams, Cardiff, the chief mining engineer being Mr. T. Forster Brown, the local manager Mr. Rees Jones & Mr. W. Beith (Blackwood) the resident Mechanical Engineer. - 7 men were killed during the shaft sinking - the colliery closed 1991. At it's peak in 1923 this mine employed some 2,328 men & boys together with over 100 horses.
The south pit downcast headgear was of wrought iron and stood some 81ft. high to the spindle of the 20ft. dia. sheave wheels. The downcast winding engine, by Messrs. John Fowler & Co. had two 54 inch cylinders with a 7ft. stroke and a spiral drum from 18ft. to 32 ft. and wound four drams per cage on two decks from 693 yds. in one minute on rail guides.
The upcast shaft headgear was constructed of pitch pine and stood 51ft. high to the spindles of the 12ft. dia. sheave wheels and the shaft was capped with conical wooden flap seals which were raised and lowered by the cage. The winding engine at the upcast had a cylindrical drum of 18' dia. which raised two drams per cage on one deck from the 6ft. seam on rail guides.
Pumping was by means of a massive Cornish Beam pump from the Perran Foundry, Cornwall - the beam alone weighed 40 tons and the cylinder 100" dia. with 11ft. stroke - and required 4 No. Lancashire boilers to provide steam.
Ventilation was by a 14'-6" dia. Schiele fan later increased to 16ft. dia..
The colliery derived it's name from that of the main shareholder of the Harris Navigation Steam Coal Co. and hence was given to name Treharris (Harris Town)

Note the two rows of huts just below the railway (lower highlight) - these were living accommodation for some of the senior shaft sinkers and miners and their families due to the lack of local dwellings at that time. They were constructed simply of timber & corrugated sheets and under construction at this time - they are still there almost forty years later and named as Twyn-y-garreg after the local farm - see map of 1914.
In 1874, during the sinking of this mine, trials were conducted in the use of the new method of diamond drilling to speed up the process. Most of the drilling used for the sinking was by hand driven methods although the use of compressed air drills such as the Beaumont and Ingersoll models were also used.
November 1882 - many cottages were in progress of being built by the Company for the workforce and the men could elect to have 10 shillings (50p) a month deducted from their wages for a period of 10 years whereupon they would own the house for the grand sum of ?60.
April 24th. 1884 - a large gathering of workmen attended an open-air meeting to present the manager, Mr. Evans, with a testimonial - the meeting was also attended by Mr. Harris who congratulated them for their strike-free record but chastised them for the fact "that the men do not keep good time and that the mine is still not paid up" - up to ?500,000 had been invested up to that time.
He also stated that between 500-600 tons of coal a week were required simply to power the machinery. Steam for the colliery was supplied via 28 No. 30' x 7' dia. Lancashire boilers

Friday 12th. December 1884 - five men had just commenced descending the No.2 upcast shaft in a bowk when the flat rope snapped. Four of the men fell over 700 yds. to their deaths but one, Thomas/John Dodd(s), managed to grab a guide rope and lower himself gradually to within hailing distance of the shaft bottom from where he was rescued after seven hours - this event caused "great excitement" in the area.
May 1887 - during a hearing to have their rates reduced the owners claimed that it cost them ?3,000 to ?4,000 a year to repair the deep shafts due to excessive squeeze.

September 1889 - a report states that " since 1883 speed trials for H.M. naval ships have been conducted using coal from Harris' Deep Navigation colliery due to it's uniform and excellent quality"
By 1895 there were 7No. air compressors sited on surface (Messrs. Fowler & Co.) with the compressed air taken down upcast shaft to underground haulage engines via. 12" dia. pipes.
In 1895 the general manager was Mr. William Jenkins and the resident manager Mr. Jonah P. Gibbon.

1897 - the timber upcast headgear and shaft seals were replaced by a latticed steel frame and steel airlock casing.
The new frame was 66' high to the spindle of the 16' dia. sheave wheels (2 No.) and a 10' dia. sheave for heavy lifting of equipment - the new frame was designed so that it fitted around the origi

This little Olympus 35RC was my birthday gift to myself. I've always wanted one and at $15 on ebay I couldn't resist. It's in nice condition, the lens and RF are clean, and it seems to work perfectly. Testing it out with my first roll of film right now.

The original mercury batteries are unobtainable. I'm using a Type 675 hearing aid battery with a metal ring adapter taken from a dead Wein Cell. I needed to add some height with a small wedge of folded aluminum foil under the battery cover, too. The metering appears accurate.

Olympus XA4 Macro

The XA4 is the least common model of the XA series. It's a scale-focus camera, like the similar XA2, but it has a wider 28mm lens and a very handy backlight compensation feature. It also will focus down to 1 foot, which is pretty impressive. The original strap, as seen here, can be used to help measure the shortest two focus distances on the scale.

Once this prototype was up and running, it ran almost all summer unattended. It always was intended to be an autonomous system but it never performed that way in the past. The data acquired from this summer was a spectacular success. The prototype ran nearly flawlessly and the data confirmed many assumptions and design parameters.

Towards the end of August, our management felt it was time to pull the plug on the field trial. We were told that after August to let the system run until it died on its own. If we couldn't get it going again with local help, we were told not to travel to fix it. The Friday before the end of August, a lightning strike at the station totally took out virtually every piece of gear in our set up. We made the bold decision that since August wasn't over yet, we had the freedom to go down and affect repairs. We quickly got flights to GA and headed to the station to assess the damage.

As I said virtually every piece of gear on the tower and at the command station was fried. We were prepared for this because virtually every piece of gear had a replacement part on site ready for action. We replaced both computers, their communications modem, the GPIB extenders on the tower and ground, and other items that I can't remember now. The only item that did not have an immediate replacement part was the UART chip on our custom designed communications link. The UART chip was (I think) a military grade component that fortunately was socketed on its circuit board. Bob drove to the local Radio Shack (where once again he had fun needling the kid working the store) and purchased an off the shelf device that once plugged into the circuit board, worked perfectly.

All the repairs we completed before Monday morning, we got the prototype kick started and running again, and we flew home before any of the managers knew what happened. Sometimes, the old axiom needs to be tested, "It is better to seek forgiveness than ask permission.".

How much do the imports of water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment vary from one country of origin to another in Malta? On the supply side, Malta also exports water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment. Which countries receive the most exports from Malta? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment in Malta. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment for those countries serving Malta via exports, or supplying from Malta via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Malta fits into the world market for imported and exported water skis, surfboards, sailboards, and other water sport equipment. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Malta in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Malta is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Malta compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

That’s a lot of history per square foot—Malta is only slightly larger than Martha’s Vineyard. Because of its strategic location in the center of the Mediterranean, just about every Western power has tried to control it, and each has left its mark.
