This was one of the enterprises on one of floors of one of the many buildings that make up the electronics market in Guangzhou.
Clearly a long day for this child.
Nothing can prepare you for the size of this place and the sheer number of stalls selling pretty much the same stuff. Its staggering.
Possibly something to do with the fact that nearby is Shenzhen which is the City where pretty much all of the worlds electronics are manufactured.
Electronics here is cheap. Very cheap. Haggling makes the prices obscenely cheap.
Laying out the flooring
Ideally, we could have waited until the drywall was done to begin installing the floor, work that Sandra and I are doing ourselves. But, being about a day and a half behind at this point doesn't leave us with much of a choice!
The floor is a sectional bamboo floating floor we purchased from the space next door after it went out of business... cheap cheap cheap, and really purty. Say goodbye to the concrete floors!

This storefront started out as a unit of a regional women's sportswear chain called Dana. Dana had stores in Roanoke, Blacksburg (and possibly Lynchburg) and had its heyday in the early 1980s.
At some point the stores were sold to another chain called Mark Henri which had some kind of affiliation with a larger chain called Seifferts, which had also bought La Vogue, another similar chain.
In any event, no matter what you called the stores, they were out of business by the late 1980s, and Images by B, a hair salon, moved into this storefront. This is still a hair salon, but there was no name posted.

University Mall is a shopping center in Blacksburg, Virginia adjacent to the Virginia Tech campus at the intersection of Prices Fork Road and University City Boulevard. Opened in 1974, the original enclosed mall contained about 250,000 square feet of retail space and was anchored by Woolco and Roanoke-based Heironimus, with Kroger on an outparcel across the street.
During the 1970s and much of the 1980s, this was the hottest retail address in the New River Valley. The center featured a strong mix of regional and local tenants including Mills Fabric, Ritz Camera, H&M Shoes, John Norman (menswear), Sidney’s, The Sickle Moon, Dana (all three were women’s apparel stores), Printer’s Ink bookstore and Peoples Drug. Even Woolco’s closure in 1983 didn’t cripple the place; Roses quickly moved in to replace it.
What did take this place down was the opening of the New River Valley Mall in neighboring Christansburg in 1988. Though the anchors stayed in place, the small shops inside the mall largely closed or moved.
In the early 1990s, both anchors folded and Virginia Tech took over their spaces for various university services and a branch of the University Bookstore. During this time, People Drug became Revco and then CVS and the mall interior slowly filled back in with various local businesses.
In 2004, the mall was sold to a group of local businessmen and plans were made to eventually donate the property to the Virginia Tech Foundation, the mall’s primary tenant. During this time, the interior of the mall received its only renovation. Its tile and concrete floors were carpeted. The globes of its pole lights were changed, and the mall was painted. Two large mobiles were placed over its pair of fountains, which have were thoroughly cleaned. On the exterior, the south end of the mall was expanded and heavily renovated with a parking garage and multistory office building added next to the intersection of Prices Fork Road and University City Boulevard, along with an outparcel for Panera Bread.
Though the center is almost fully tenanted now, the interior mall remains a well-preserved relic of 1970s retail design. Many storefronts are still original and substantially all of the interior decor from 1974 is still here. Even the CVS is still here, largely unchanged from its days as a Peoples Drug.
Brandon Rabideau - Stylist, Keratin Specialist
Stylist and the salon's extra set of hands, Brandon Rabideau, began his career as a stylist three years ago in a career change. He previously worked 12 years in the real estate industry working for home builders, sub-division planning and construction. Brandon says, "Cutting hair is very similar to carpentry, expect now you just do it on someone's hair instead of in their living room. The same rules apply." His influence to a new career path came during the declining real estate market combined with the talent and vision of Halo Salon by his wife, Jenna Rabideau. While attending Fort Worth Beauty School, Brandon used his business knowledge and expertise to manage the salon. He's been on the floor since early 2009 but cites working with and learning from the best of the best in the industry at Halo has elevated his experience level. He challenges himself constantly to be as good if not better than the stylist beside him, using the best of his ability and potential; a true perfectionist. His coworkers have all said that he is a natural and has learned faster than any other stylist. Brandon has already had the opportunity to work on celebrity clientele such as Thom Filicia. He loves working with all kinds of cultural hair types and draws his influence from Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, and Rihanna. He is passionate about clean lines and soft movement and says he's his own worst critic. He brings his influence from his other musical creative outlet to his new profession. Brandon stars in a hip-hop music ensemble in which he sings, plays drums and keyboard, and is involved in the recording, editing and mastering of his music. He and Jenna have been married for 12 years and have two children.

04-Demo - floor
Shower walls and base have been installed. The original floor is now being removed. Floor was small tiles on 1/2" concrete bed over a heavy wire mesh.
Most of the painting has been done too.

Wood Flooring
Staining - use watered down paint or furniture wood stain in the color of your choice. I painted some darker than others for variation. I also made sure I nabbed all the sides.
I put baking paper down on my work surface because this was a leaky project. I also recommend gloves and if the can calls for it - a facemask for fumes. Also do this in a ventilated area. I have both windows wide open in my craft room and am painting right in front of them. I also opened the bedroom windows. :D
Next - I'll add distressing (step can be skipped for newer look floors)
and then Gloss varnishing.

80's Philips' Walita floor polishers
These are the one-brush floor polishers made by Walita since 1981 to 1986, the square model was called "Chao de estrelas" (sort of "floor of stars" in portuguese) and the rounded ones are the "W1 polishers" "Deluxe" and "Super Deluxe" versions.
Indeed both models are the same appliance with different motor casing, after 1986 Electrolux bought them and produced the rounded model until about 1996 and the square one until 2008.
These ones are from a friend of mine who is a collector of floor polishers!

Floor Standing Loudspeaker - Crossover Network
The crossover network is a self designed 3 way Linkwitz-Riley 12dB/octave for both the bass-mid and mid-high sections. The crossover frequencies are computer designed for 762Hz and 3810Hz using 1% spec components derived from measurement - refer the written values on the capacitors in the picture.
Each driver is equalised for voice coil inductance to ensure frequency and phase response linearity. The crossover PCB required much modification, such as cutting extra lands and providing links, to accept the many extra components I added.
Jaycar was the supplier for the parts, although some such as the drivers and PCB are no longer available. It pays to hoard components, like the currently available Vifa drivers which may soon disappear from the Jaycar catalogue.
2011-01-25 - Speak To Me
25 January 2011 (025): Listening to a couple of albums today: British Sea Power's Valhalla Dancehall (see yesterday's image) and Erland & the Carnival's self titled debut album.
Yes, there are two different types of speaker stacked here. My "hifi" arrangement is currently less than impressive. A very old Alba midi system feeds four speakers. The two floor standing "Acoustic Solutions" units receive the mid/high range channels, and the original two Alba speakers receive the left and right bass channels.
Originally the hifi would have two cables to each speaker however the current setup does sound better. A proper hifi separates system is on the cards though, with completely new speakers. This year or next I reckon.

This song repeated in my head over, and over, and over again today. Adam and I got in a stupid fight last night. So then this morning/today, I kept checking my phone like an idiot hoping he'd call. Meanwhile, out of stubbornness, not calling him. Really mature, you know. The song was perfectly fitting for my mood though. And it came out exactly like I had in my head. Er, well, almost.

The final sealer coat is applied to the Master Bedroom hardwood floor. The picture is a little odd because it was taken through a closed sliding glass door. I didn't want to let any dust in the room by opening the door.

Frank W. Thomas House (1901)
210 Forest Avenue Oak Park, IL. This house, commissioned by James C. Rogers in 1901 for his daughter and her husband, Frank Wright Thomas, is the earliest of Wright's fully mature residences in Oak Park. Thus, it is the first "Prairie Style" house in Oak Park! It is also the first house by Wright to have its main rooms raised a full story above grade on a high basement.
South face of house This house also has the distinction of being Wright's first all stucco house in Oak Park, and only the third of its kind by Wright. By changing from wood to stucco in the design of his frame houses, Wright was able to achieve the kind of precise geometric masses that his rapidly developing modern aesthetic required.
Typical of Wright's houses in the period 1901-03 is the arched entrance, leaded glass accentuated by bits of white and gold, and the beaded moldings. This entrance way is famous for its "false door", which is not seen in this view, but rather is located in the area above the archway. Also unique in this house is the L-shaped floor plan, which orients the house toward the more open view to the north and west, while blocking from view the high brick wall of the row houses on the south side.

Stanley Hotel - Second Floor Main Stairwell Panorama
I am REALLY loving the panorama and content fill features that Photoshop CS5. Both do outstanding work. This is a good example - I shot the two shots stitched together here fairly badly. I didn't leave enough overlap, and I apparently lifted the camera between the two shots when I turned it on the tripod (hence the black zone in the upper left). Also that stairwell railing has a lot of repetitive detail. I didn't expect PS could knit this together, but it proved me spectacularly wrong! There was also a black zone on the lower right but I used Content Fill to fill it (you can tell where it is as the lines of detail in the carpet suddenly becomes a bit of a jumble, but still, impressive). Unfortunately, content fill couldn't do anything about the missing ceiling.
Anyway, this is the haunted main staircase in the Stanley Hotel. I've featured it before but I thought I'd post this as the panorama gives a very different view. The side on the left here is where the spirit of Lord Dunraven will occasionally harass female guests, groping them and stealing their jewelry as they walk up the stairs.
Boise: Second-floor vault
View of the second-floor vault at downtown Boise's Sonna Building. There was once an adjoining building but it was removed years ago, leaving the vault door on the outside of the building.
Previous, the building was painted to accentuate that door. Now, I suspect that most people driving or even walking past in the 900 block of West Main Street miss it.

The main feature of this ultra-modern bathroom was the floor to ceiling travertine tiling creating a luxury feel, complemented by the chrome fittings and towel rail. The walk-in shower unit had an indulgent feel with multi head directional sprays and curved glass. The floor benefitted from electric underfloor heating

Happy Bloody Christmas
This guy was the security guard at one of the ad agencies I freelance at in London, the building is on Eversholt Street just nearby to Euston Station, there were quite a few businesses based here that mostly dealt with the dark arts of advertising, marketing and design. It looks as if he's plugged in in the photograph, it would be nice to say that I was eagle eyed and framed him to appear just so, but alas no I noticed this happy surprise after getting the film developed at Metro Imaging on Great Marlborough Street. Metro have since moved over Clerkenwell way, such is film's demise. I underexposed the shot by about two stops and it took quite a lot of work to salvage this pic, but hey at least it's better than nothing.
