Poster for The Selective Advantage of Art Lecture/Exhibition - Bath

This is the basic premise of the lecture and exhibition, held as part of the 'Darwin and Beyond' year of celebrations at the BRLSI to mark the anniversaries of Darwin's birth and the publication of his masterwork 'The Origin of the Species':

One of the basic concepts of evolution is that survival depends on your being just that bit better than the rest. That’s the “advantage”. And natural selection ensures that those better individuals have a better chance of survival. Anything that enhances survival gives “selective advantage”. The prevalence of arts – story-telling, music, dance, visual arts, literature, poetry, etc. – suggests that art confers selective advantage. How could that selective advantage operate?

Pewter casting

Pewter casting

Hey what do you know, it worked!

I did run into a few problems, mainly with the temp I was getting w/ my grill outside. I think I'll have to switch to a plumbers torch and a smaller dish/pan to pour from. I had trouble getting the pewter hot enough, and as you can see pouring it was also problematic.

I'd hoped to be able to control the pour enough to cast it thin enough so there would be open spaces between the fingers and around the hand. As it is the back is quite thick, and as you can see I wasn't able to get an even edge at all.

I'm also wondering if I heat the mold up a bit if that would help. I could use the grill as a warmer, heat it to 200-300 degrees, then cook the pewter separately and pour it into the hot mold and see if that helps.

Wiring Closet: After

Wiring Closet: After

This is another wiring closet clean up project. This is after the clean-up. Notice that the cables are channeled down the sides. We use inexpensive guides that screw on to keep the cables to the side. We used lots of velcro (about ever 6 inches) to bundle cables. We parted everything down the center, and used the left and right sides of the rack to organize the cables. Each row on the patch panel was bundled together and connected to the same switch. The switches were interconnected in an effecient way (not daisy chained). The coloring actually means very little in this case. We used what cables we had. Some are colour codes, but not many. We put plenty of space between the switches and lowering the density helps incredibly in keeping the cabling under control. It took 4 hours to do the wiring, and about 2 hours to do the planning (part of the project was to trace 8 connections and move them to a gigabit switch)

Boom operator is getting ready to connect to the C-17

Boom operator is getting ready to connect to the C-17

About the KC-135
from wikipedia:

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker was the first jet powered aerial refueling tanker of the US Air Force, replacing the KC-97 Stratotanker. Similar in design to the later and enlarged Boeing 707 airliner, it was initially tasked to refuel strategic bombers, but was used extensively in the Vietnam war and later conflicts such as Desert Storm to extend the range and endurance of both Air Force and Navy tactical fighters and bombers.

Serving with the United States Air Force since 1957, it is one of just six military fixed wing aircraft with over 50 years of continuous service with the original service along with the Tupolev Tu-95, the C-130 Hercules, the B-52 Stratofortress, the English Electric Canberra and the Lockheed U-2. Supplemented by the larger KC-10, complete replacement is still under study by the Air Force. Despite increased maintenance costs, studies conclude many of the aircraft could be flown until 2040, with ages reaching 80 years before reaching lifetime flying hour limits.

Fun facts about KC-135 Aerial Refueling:
-transfers enough fuel through the refueling boom in one minute to operate the average family car for more than one year.
-transfer more fuel in 8 minutes than a gas station could pump in 24 hours.
-can actually tow a fighter along while hooked up for a refueling, at 500 MPH.
-carries the refueling boom operator in a position only about 20 feet from the cockpit of the aircraft being fueled.

Tonight I spent the evening with my girlfriend April. We went and saw a play, and on the way back we spotted this weak little fair. The rides in the picture are pretty much all they had (besides the Gravatron). Then we had dinner and found ice cream. All in all a good night out with the lady.

Note that the "butterfly" valve is missing from the wastegate assembly. Normally, the valve would move to close off the exhaust, forcing more of the gasses through the turbine wheel, spinning the compressor wheel faster, thus producing more compressed air for the engine intake.

With the wastegates disabled, the aircraft operates with essentially no boost.
