Margaret E. Vartanoff (1914-2010)

Margaret E. Vartanoff (1914-2010)

Margaret E. Vartanoff, widow of expatriate Georgian prince, Michael Sergius Vartanoff, died peacefully at her home in Aspen Hill, Maryland, on November 13, 2010 one day short of her 96th birthday, from advanced dementia.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of environmentalist attorney John A. Brown and granddaughter of industrialist Arthur W. Glessner, who founded the Excelsior Steel Furnace Company of Chicago. Educated at the Faulkner School and Bowen High, she received her B.A. in Humanities in 1939 from the University of Chicago. She interrupted her doctoral studies there to join the war effort in Washington, DC, in 1942, working for what was then the Army Map Service as a cartographer specializing in eastern European geographic names. There she met and married Mr. Vartanoff, a naturalized citizen who was born in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Georgia, during the Tsarist era, and came to this country in 1922. His pre-US citizen name was Prince Mikail Sergevevitch Iskanderbeg-Khodjiminasoff-Dolguruki-Vartanoff. Mr. Vartanoff was also the simultaneous translator for Secretary of State Edward R. Stettinius, Jr. during the San Francisco Conference that founded the United Nations in 1945. Mr. Vartanoff retired from the Army Map Service in 1969 and died in 1970.

Margaret Vartanoff worked in the Montgomery County Public Libraries and was a lifelong world traveler and patron of the arts. She was an active parishioner of the Ascension & St. Agnes Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, for many years. After retirement, she volunteered as an ESOL coach and Smithsonian Institution docent.

She was preceded in death in 2003 by her sister, Elizabeth K. Brown, of Chicago, IL, and Rockville, MD. Mrs. Vartanoff is survived by her three children, David Vartanoff of Oakland, CA, Irene Vartanoff of Hedgesville, WV, and Ellen Vartanoff of Rockville, MD, and one grandchild, Trevor Vartanoff of Rockville, MD.

Aviator Says New York Attorney Is Leftist Agent. Several Indictments Are Planned in Enlistment of Fliers for Spain.

New York, January 15, 1937 (Associated Press) Back from a month of dropping bombs on behalf of the Spanish loyalist government, Eddie Schneider, Jersey City, New Jersey, aviator, said today he was signed up by a New York lawyer to serve in the Spanish war at $1,500 a month. Schneider was questioned by Assistant United States Attorney John F. Dailey, Jr. who announced he would seek indictments from the Federal grand jury next week against several New Yorkers in connection with their enlistment of American aviators for Spanish service. Interviewed as entered Dailey's office, Schneider said the lawyer negotiated with him for his services and handed him his steamship ticket for transportation to Spain. The flier said he quit the war to comply with President Roosevelt's neutrality policy, and that the Spanish Embassy in Paris advanced him his fare home pending payment of his salary. Schneider said he participated in daily bombing raids in Spain for three weeks, flying remodeled sports planes and dropping bombs through a hole in the cockpit floor. He has a record of more than 2,000 air hours since 1928, and has set several transcontinental flying records, he said. He left here six weeks ago with Major Fred Lord, who is still in Spain. Dailey said it was unlikely the grand jury would hear testimony from Bert Acosta and Major Gordon Berry, free-lance fliers who returned yesterday from Spain and, whom Dailey questioned, but that agencies hiring Americans for Spanish service would be prosecuted "to the limit." The district attorney said Federal agents were investigating the stories told by Acosta and Berry.

Bexar County Under Nine Governments

Bexar County Under Nine Governments

The administrative government of Bexar County, besides being the oldest in Texas distinguished by having served under nine governments.
The community served under Spanish rule from may, 1718, until January 1811, when it was taken over by the revolutionary "Casas Regime", only five weeks later the "counter-revolutionary Junta of Bexar" overthrew the Casas Government and eventually restored Spanish rule.
In April, 1812 however, the "Republican Army of the North" deposed the provincial Spanish government and declared independence from Spain, five months later the Spanish regained control, holding Texas until 1821.
The fifth regime"First Imperial Government of Mexico" was created when Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the emperor relinquished control to army leaders within two years, however, and the "Republic of Mexico" was established.
Texas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, thereby establishing Bexar's seventh government, the "Republic of Texas in 1846, Texas became the twenty-eighth state of the United States and remained in the union until 1861, when the southern states seceded to form the Confederacy, following, the Civil War, U.S. rule returned to Bexar County in 1865.

The Bexar County Courthouse

The Bexar County Courthouse

This courthouse occupies the south side of main Plaza, formerly called "La Plaza De Las Islas", as originally laid out by the Canary Islanders in 1731. As it was then, this plaza is the administrative and judicial heart of Bexar County.
This is the fourth edifice to house the government of the county since Texas entered the United States. The citizens authorized $ 621,000 worth of bonds in 1890s to finance its construction. James Riely Gordon (1863-1937), architect for many imposing public buildings, including at least one state capitol, submitted the award winning Romanesque design for this courthouse. The builders were George Dugan, David Hughes, and Otto P Kroeger. The foundation was laid in 1891, and the structure was completed in 1896. Native Texas granite and red sandstone are basic materials of the massive building. Towers roofed, in green tile and red tile, handsome columns and arches, carvings, and many fine interior details gave the edifice great distinction.
Additions in 1914 and 1926 continued the use of Texas granite and sandstone. Expansions in 1963, 1970, and 1973 employed other materials, however, and also altered portions of the original design.

interesting things about an interview in Japan:
- you must bring resume with a photo (appearance is very important)
- They will ask your age (you must include your age in your resume). many jobs has age limitation, and many positions are limited to women under 28 (even regular office work).

i went to 3 interviews a few days ago: one of the interviewer's first question was my age (over the phone). two interviewers were male, and they asked if I am single. One of the guy said ' you have been in the states for 10 years but haven't found anyone yet?'

say cheese!

Burlington T. Squirrel, Esq. (smiling)

Burlington T. Squirrel, Esq. (smiling)

i've been friends with this particular squirrel (Burlington T. Squirrel) for nearly 20 years... we met in the spring of 1988 when i bought my first home... he was a very spry clever young squirrel... he's definitely showing his age lately... he typically lived in our live oak... but for about 6 months he lived in our attic... and he would decide to run around like a rabid rodent pretty much every night at around 1 am... i finally hired a professional no kill expert to help me chase BT and his family out of the attic... the next day BT was hanging upside down looking at me through our window and shaking his tiny fist in my direction... i swear this is true... v saw it too... fortunately the neighbor's roof wasn't secure so BT and clan moved in next door... he would come and go out of a hole that was right in front of our kitchen window... on weekends, i'd see BT climbing out of the hole at roughly 10 -11 am... looking sleepy and hung over... he'd squint at the bright sun and stretch... and finally start his day... gotta admire that in a rodent...

let's fast forward a few years... my parents live in our old house now... and BT is back to living in the oak tree... in fact, he was heading to the oak tree when i shot this picture... i'm not at all surprised that he smiled at the camera... of course, he's the only squirrel i've ever seen smile... he has lots to smile about... a huge acorn rich oak and another huge pecan tree... plus my dad feeds him... just like i did... BT is moving a little slower nowadays but he seems surprisingly healthy for his age... i hear they live roughly 30-40 yrs... so he might just be hitting a bit past mid life... i guess we're growing old together...

oh yeah... how do i know its the same squirrel... let's just say he has a very identifiable characteristic... you can partially see it in the picture....

Portland Head Light, Portland Maine

Portland Head Light, Portland Maine

Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Construction began in 1787 at the directive of George Washington, and was completed on January 10, 1791.

The station has changed little except for the rebuilding of the whistle house in 1975 due to it being badly damaged in a storm. Today, Portland Head Light stands 80 feet above ground and 101 feet above water, its white conical tower being connected with a dwelling. The 200,000 candlepower, DCB 224 airport style aerobeacon is visible from 24 miles away. The grounds, and keeper's house are owned by the town of Cape Elizabeth, while the beacon, and fog signal are owned and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard as a current aid to navigation. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Portland Head light (sic) on April 24, 1973, reference number 73000121.

Bryce Seton Vandergrift 2

Bryce Seton Vandergrift 2

Fred Cantu RIP Much Respect from Ms. D M M Pelletier, Bryce Seton Vandergrift's Mother.
VIDEO 2. Fred Cantu Jr. RIP "Much Respect" Who told the news Bryce was 16? He had just turned 15. DOB 09-09-94. The police found 4 to 6 unsecured weapons and ammo in the Cantu attic. There was talk of a third party. Nicholas Daniel Cantu, son of Fred Cantu Jr, was questioned by the police, somewhere along the way Bryce was blamed and framed for all the charges. Though Nick was charged also, Bryce was made out to be the mastermind, That is simply NOT POSSIBLE! Someone was being protected. Bryce was alone when read his rights and questioned. He was off his medications, his Thought Disorder was ungarded. No therapy for months to catch this and guide him? nothing for bryce... WHY? and why did it take my son being arrested for the Doctor to give him some psychiatric medications? The SAME Psychiatrist that was outside the jail, was now bryce's psychiatrist inside the jail! When Bryce was brought to Juvi, he was dissasociated, he was exsperiencing psychosis as it was triggered again inside Juvenile detention center. Bryce didn't know what he did, where he was and barely knew his own name. Juvi had to do the 5 strap down and 24 hour suicide watch. Nick was just fine. Now the same psychiatrist was precribing him heavy dosages of Prozac and Trazadone. And what ever else! Thou Bryce had started using illegal drugs heavily when he met nick in May 2009, the jails lab test came out clear-clean? The State Forensic Psychologist wrote, no drug use-abuse, though There is over 6 months documentation of it. She also wrote that bryce looks his stated age?!? Are you serious JWG? Drugs made his mind feel better, what choice did he have? The "defence team" force fed Bryce details and rerecorded Bryce confessing, until it was good enough. No matter how many times the tragic crime was rewritten, Bryce beleive he did what they told him he did. A mentally ill brain cannot handle defending itself against manipulation. Bryce's well documented history is his proof, that while on his treatment plan in the care of his mother, Bryce was doing great! And this is what those in control of the case "against" my son, would rewrite to read as if he had never been okay and they added that his mother (me) is nuts and this is what they hope will keep anyone from listening to me on behalf of my son. or to consider support or assist in an appeal. At times also fell into being manipulated, especially by the parole officer, the defense attorney and others in control of my sons life. I Will Not Give Up On My Son. {please do not confuse me with the Step Mom who is/was Patricia R. Vandergrift. Patricia and David L Vandergrift divorced in 2009. TY.seeking legal assistance for wrongfully accused and convicted minor child. Arrested at age 15? for Capital Murder, now 17 years old. Brainwashed to say, do, sign, agree to what ever his defense attorney wanted him to. Including a plea deal, guilty without reasonable doubt, Bryce's admission to this crime is a senerio that his defense fed to him. It didn't happen the way Bryce thinks it did. My Minor Son Continues to believe he did what ever the defense attorney wanted him to believe. Substanical Evidence Exist.
