USS Midway from astern

USS Midway from astern

Approaching the USS Midway (CV-41) from astern in the Gulf of Oman in February 1981. Note the huge overhang of the angled flight deck on the port side.
USS Midway (CVB/CVA/CV-41) was an aircraft carrier of the US Navy, the lead ship of her class, and the first to be commissioned after the end of WWII. Active in Operation Desert Storm, she is now a museum ship in San Diego, CA. She is the only remaining aircraft carrier of the WWII era that is not an Essex-class ship. Midway was laid down 27 October 1943 by Newport News Shipbuilding Co., Newport News, VA. Her revolutionary hull design was based on what would have been the Montana-class battleships and gave her superior maneuverability over all previous carriers. On 17 August 1980, Midway relieved Constellation to begin another Indian Ocean deployment and to complement the Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) task group still on contingency duty in the Arabian Sea. Midway spent a total of 118 days in the Indian Ocean during 1980/81. On 25 March 1986, the final carrier launching of a Fleet F-4S Phantom II took place off Midway during flight operations in the East China Sea. Midway was decommissioned at NAS North Island on 11 April 1992 in a ceremony in which the main speaker was Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney. On 30 September 2003, Midway moved from the Navy Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility, Bremerton, WA en route to San Diego, CA for use as a museum and memorial. She was opened to the public on 7 June 2004. In its first year of operation, the museum doubled attendance projections by welcoming 879,281 guests aboard. Visitors may tour the ship's flight deck, hangar bay, mess hall, bridge, primary flight control area, enlisted and junior officer quarters, sickbay, and portions of the engine rooms. Additionally, several restored aircraft are on display in the hangar and on the flight deck. Self-guided audio tours are provided with admission. Events and meetings are held on board as well. Five to six evening events are held aboard Midway every week. Midway now books events three years in advance.

Study at the Parker Library

Study at the Parker Library

My search for the perfect study spot for my FAA knowledge test continued today with a stop at the local public library. Don't know why it didn't occur to me before since it's intended for quiet contemplation. Douglas County libraries all have free wi-fi as well, which works great for my online test preparation. Probably the biggest nuisance was the kids playing on the row of Internet-connected computers - obviously IM'ing each other jokes (or links to lude content?). The runner-up problems was that there's no beverages allowed.

Lockerbie: The Story and the Lessons

Lockerbie: The Story and the Lessons

The explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in December 1988, should never have happened. Wallis, who has extensive, direct, personal knowledge of aviation security matters gained from his position at the crossroads of security information and the industry's endeavors to combat aviation terrorism, had warned the industry one year before the bombing that the interline element of baggage represented the prime opportunity for terrorist activity and had urged the adoption of passenger and baggage matching, a system that he had helped to develop. Mandated by the FAA for use at high risk airports, it was the feature missing from Pan Am's activity at Frankfort, an omission so cruelly exploited by the bombers. Wallis argues that the priority given by governments to technological solutions to the continuing terrorist threat puts the flying public at unnecessary risk every day.
This volume brings together all of the facts surrounding the sabotage of Flight 103, including the investigation and the civil litigation in which so much of the story unfolded for the first time. It uncovers the fundamental weaknesses in Pan Am's communication and management policies. Wallis supports the policy that politics are politics and explores the possibility that U.S. and U.K. policy towards a neutral trial for the two Libyans indicted for the bombing, which may have been affected by the wider scenario of Middle East politics rather than simple justice for the victims of Lockerbie. Although the tragedy has led to improvements in defense technology for use against acts of aviation sabotage, these methods have yet to be applied universally.

Peggy's Cove: Charles Bray took this picture of the Memorial to the Passengers Swiss Air Flight 111 on September 2nd 1998. The whole world reels from the crash of Swiss Air Flight 111 in the Atlantic Ocean, near Peggy's Cove and Ironbound Island in New Scotland (Nova Scotia) 10:30 pm, Wednesday evening. The Swiss air Flight 111 Memorial is located at The Whalesback, a promontory approximately 1 km northwest of Peggy’s Cove. It is one of two memorials built to commemorate the victims of the Swiss Air Flight III disaster, which saw the aircraft crash into St. Margaret’s Bay on September 2nd 1998. The crash site is roughly equidistant between the Whalesback Memorial and another memorial at Bayswater, Nova Scotia, located on the Asptogan Peninsula on the western shore of the bay, opposite Peggy’s Cove. The monument reads in English and in French, "In memory of the 229 men, women and children aboard Swissair Flight 111 who perished off these shores September 2nd, 1998, they have been joined to the sea, and the sky. May they rest in peace.

Love Now, Pay Later? - Sex and religion and the fifties and sixties

Nigel Yates brings together the religious and social dimensions of the 1950s and 60s and examines the enormous changes in moral attitudes that took place in these two decades. Much of the popular literature on post-war Britain tends to present the 1950s as a period of continuing repression and respectability in the area of private and public morality, and the 1960s as one in which there was rapid social change. Using a wide range of contemporary sources - books (including novels), magazines, newspapers, advertising, fashion catalogues, films and television, as well as a number of significant archive collections - Nigel Yates argues that changes in attitudes to religion and morality in the 1960s were only made possible by developments in the 1950s.

DAY 25 7/22/10

Day 2 of the ATL trip, and things are hectic. I don't want to complain, but it has kinda sucked. We ate at the Varsity, which is the largest drive-in restaurant and is also very famous. Unfortunately, the food did not please me that much and instead made me feel kinda sick. For dinner, we ate at Mary Mac's Tearoom, which is the last tearoom still running and has been in business for over 80 years. The culture here is pretty awesome although the trip has not been the best because of other factors. We shopped some more today. Yesterday, at the Varsity and today at the Station. I stocked up on some H & M and made the necessary stop to Victoria's Secret where I got a PINK dog as a complimentary gift. We were supposed to tour Georgia Tech, but it fell through, which I was okay with.

After all this, we went back to the hotel and dipped into the hot tub, and stayed up late skypeing with the guys' room.

& for the picture, I took it on the tour bus so it is pretty sucky. I was intrigued by these parking ticket stands. In NYC, the parking lot areas looked much more different than the ones here. I also liked the graffiti that was found splashed on almost every wall throughout the midtown district. I took it with my Canon EOS 10D, and obviously picnik'd it because that's all I ever do..

Let me know whatcha thinkkk.

Why the West Rules--for Now: The Patterns of History, and What They Reveal About the Future

A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice

An Economist Best Book of the Year

A story fifty thousand years in the making, Why the West Rules—for Now claims a place among the modern classics of world history. Author Ian Morris—polymath, internationally renowned scholar, and “the world’s most talented ancient historian” (Niall Ferguson)—explains anew the story of Western dominance in this unified theory of all things geopolitical. Describing the patterns of human history, Morris brings together the latest findings across disciplines—from ancient history to neuroscience—not only to explain why the West came to rule the world but also to predict what the next hundred years will bring. At once vibrant, scholarly, and entertaining, Why the West Rules—for Now is “a stunningly informative, imaginative, and engaging account...provocative...and intellectually stimulating” (Glenn C. Altschuler, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).

The West: An Illustrated History

For the first time in paperback comes the magnificent, copiously illustrated companion volume to the landmark PBS television series. 400+ illustrations, many in full color.

The companion volume to the stunning PBS television series, and an encore the acclaimed bestsellers The Civil War and Baseball. In a vivid narrative that begins with the arrival of the first Europeans and ends well into the twentieth century, author Geoffrey C. Ward provides a gripping journey through the turbulent history of the region that has come to symbolize America around the world. Drawing upon hundreds of letters, diaries, memoirs, and journals as well as the latest scholarship, and vividly illustrated with over 400 photographs, many of them never before published, The West: An Illustrated History chronicles the arrival of wave after wave of newcomers from every direction of the compass, each of which invested the harsh but majestic western landscape with its own myths and desires and dreams.
It is the central story of America, a story filled with heroism and hope, enterprise and adventure as well as tragedy and disappointment. It explores the tensions between whites and the native peoples that they sought to displace, but it also encompasses the Hispanic experience in the West, from the time of the conquistadors to the transformation of a Mexican-American village called Los Angeles into the region's major metropolis; the lives of Chinese immigrants who called the region "Gold Mountain"; and the ordeals of freed slaves from the South who sought a better life homesteading on the Great Plains. This book is as sprawling, vast, and rich as the history and land it describes.

The Mission (Two-Disc Special Edition)

The Mission (Two-Disc Special Edition)

Featuring a majestic score by Ennio Morricone and lush Oscar-winning cinematography by Chris Menges. It won the top prize at Cannes in 1986 and was nominated for a Best Film Oscar. The film is shot through with piercing, haunting imagery, pictures of enduring imaginative force. A visually stunning epic, THE MISSION recounts the true story of two men--a man of the sword (Robert De Niro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons)--both Jesuit missionaries who defied the colonial forces of mighty Spain and Portugal to save an Indian tribe from slavery in mid-18th-century South America. Mendoza (De Niro) is a slave trader and colonial imperialist who murdered his own brother (Aidan Quinn) and seeks penance for his sins by becomining a missionary at Father Gabriel's (Irons) mountaintop mission. The Mission is a rich and thought-provoking. It contains moving images of despair, penance, and redemption that are among the most evocative ever filmed.

Roland Joffe (The Killing Fields) directs this fuzzy effort at a David Lean-like epic without David Lean's sense of emotional proportion. Lean's most important screenwriting collaborator, Robert Bolt, in fact wrote The Mission, which concerns a Jesuit missionary (Jeremy Irons) who establishes a church in the hostile jungles of Brazil and then finds his work threatened by greed and political forces among his superiors. Robert De Niro is briefly effective as a callous soldier who kills his own brother and then turns to Irons's character to oversee his penance and conversion to the clergy. The narrative and dramatic forces at work in this movie should be more stirring and powerful than they are--the problem being that Joffe is too removed from them to allow us in. --Tom Keogh

Mission Fault, Fremont, CA

Mission Fault, Fremont, CA

The active trace of the Mission Fault near the Mission Peak landslide looking NNW. The fault takes up compressive and translational stresses between the Hayward Fault to the north and Calaveras Fault to the south, transferring a large amount slip between the two interconnected fault systems. Displacement is taken up by both continuous creep and by earthquakes but the behavior and distribution of "locked" and creeping sections of the fault in the area is not fully understood.

The hills to the right are moving up and to the south over the city of Fremont creating significant relief for hiking, views, and giant landslides. The Mission Peak landslide became famous for the intersection of natural hazards and pop culture when mudlsides and deformation in the toe of the landslide threatened the former MC Hammer mansion in 1998. The mansion was built for 15-20 million in 1992, sold for 5+ in 1997 and dropped down to the 1+ range for several years following the 1997/1998 El Nino. They must have paid for a better geological report because Zillow now lists it for over 5 million.

At the start of the twenty-first century, those same monuments are now ruins: the United Artists Theater, the Whitney Building, the Farwell Building and the once ravishing Michigan Central Station (unused since 1988) today look as if a bomb had dropped on Motor City, leaving behind the ruins of a once great civilization. In a series of weekly photographic bulletins for Time magazine called "Detroit's Beautiful, Horrible Decline," photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre have been revealing to an astonished America the scale of decay in Detroit. "The state of ruin is essentially a temporary situation that happens at some point, the volatile result of change of era and the fall of empires," write Marchand and Meffre. "Photography appeared to us as a modest way to keep a little bit of this ephemeral state." As Detroit's white middle class continues to abandon the city center for its dispersed suburbs, and its downtown high-rises empty out, these astounding images, which convey both the imperious grandeur of the city's architecture and its genuinely shocking decline, preserve a moment that warns us all of the transience of great epochs.

Forgotten Detroit (Images of America)

Detroiters know their history well. Founded in 1701 by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the city subsisted on a variety of industries: fur trading, stove building, and, of course, the automobile. Names such as Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh resonate in DetroitersA’ common memory. DetroitA’s meteoric rise during the 20th century established the city as an influential leader in commerce, culture, and religion. This growth spawned the development of numerous businesses, organizations, and institutions, many now forgotten. Albert Kahn left his indelible mark. Mary Chase Stratton created a new art form. And Henry Ford II changed the course of his family legacy. Forgotten Detroit delves into the wellspring of history to retell some of these lesser-known stories within DetroitA’s rich heritage.

June (Brides of the West #2)

Lori Copeland continues her historical romance series, Brides of the West, with book 2, June. As June leaves her Michigan home to become the mail-order bride of a Washington State preacher, readers will learn the important lesson that God is ever faithful, even when we don't understand his plan or purpose in our lives. June delivers a lighthearted, entertaining story along with strong moral values and a Christian worldview.
Mail-order bride June Kallahan arrives in Seattle from Michigan to discover that her intended, Eli Messenger, the assistant to a famous evangelist named Isaac Inman, is ill. After he dies, June stays on to work at the local orphanage, where she realizes Inman is allowing the orphans to go without in order to build a showy tabernacle. A romance blooms between June and Parker Sentell, a friend of Eli's, as they try to convince Inman of the errors of his thinking.

Backflip in suit
I have quite long story for this one, so it would be better for you to think preciously if its worth reading for you=).So I will start from the real begining...My chruch-ICF Praha(www.icf-praha.cz) was no longer ago trying to decide where it should continue...And as we were thinking about it, we think out, that it would be really funny, atractive and original(and also cheaper) to have church on boat.So we started a project called „church on boat“.It started I think at june this year, and ow we have a lot of things solved and arranged, but we still dont miss one thing...something between 7-12 milions czech crowns...And because of this we decided, that this project just cant be realized without sponzors...And yesterday we had little promo dinner with presentation of our project on one of pragues boats...And it was qiute „high society“ event(because of invited guests), so we were told to wear suits. So I have to put on this piece of clothes which I really hate...And when I was thinking about how its uncomfortable and how its impractical I did think out, that it could be really cool to have photo of backflip in suit=D. And since then I just couldnt get it out of my head, so today just after school I put on suit, tell one of my friends to come with me with camera and went for it=)

By the way...If anyone of you is interested, or just want to know something more about „church on boat“ project, I will be glad to send you more informations=)

Henry & June

HENRY & JUNE - DVD Movie

Anais Nin (Maria de Medeiros) is a young woman in 1930s Paris whose husband is slowly defecting from art to working in a bank, leaving her very bored. When the then-unpublished Brooklyn writer Henry Miller (Fred Ward) enters her life, she embarks on a journey of seduction and sexual exploration that eventually leads from the writer to his wife, June (Uma Thurman), who finances her husband's life in Paris so he may praise her beauty in his writing. Unhappy with her husband's writing and her lovers' affair, June enters a jealous rage, forcing Henry into suffering-artist mode and Nin back to her husband. Despite having one of the more erotic scenes of the 1990s, between Nin and June, the film does not live up to its subject, largely due to a mediocre screenplay and flawed direction. The strength of the original material and Medeiros's decidedly unflawed performance, however, make it worth viewing. --James McGrath

Look, going cheap! Don't miss out!

Look, going cheap! Don't miss out!

Three cultural icons: Elvis, Miley Cyrus and, er, yes, Mr White T-Shirt, Simon Cowell. What kind of pervert needs a Simon Cowell calendar? It's a bit frightening. I was almost tempted to waste 69p and discover the horror within. Almost. It's a delicious irony that the World's Most Acquisitve Man (oops, sorry, the world's greatest pop svengali and moneymaker) is going cheap in the bargain bins.

While I'm on the subject of the Cowell, I'd just like to say that this photo does a fair job of covering the patent weakness of his jawline that is more obvious when you see him talk. That weakness is mirrored in his character, which was exposed when he weasel-voted on Jedward hoping to keep them in, and the controversy-factor ratings for his show up, and Dannii Minogue proved the following week that a pint-size Aussie girlie could have larger balls than him by voting for what she believed.

Should anybody have a burning need to possess one of these, they can be found in one of the cheap shops at the chavvy end of Hereford's main shopping drag. No rush, I expect they'll be there for some time ;)

Turkey a la King a la Alyss

Turkey a la King a la Alyss

Yes yes, it's Thanksgiving Turkey Leftover Time! Everyone's favorite time of year, right? Yeah, me neither :) I actually am not terribly fond of turkey. I mean, I eat it every year and enjoy it when I do. I have never, ever, though, thought "I'd like turkey tonight". Never, not once.
All that may change with this recipe (OK, it probably won't - I'll make this with chicken next time :) It's a turkey variation of the classic from the Joy of Cooking called Chicken A La King. And it's good... real good.
I've been doing a little research to find out just what is the difference between an a la King, a Tetrazzini and a pot pie filling. Turns out, not much. A la King sauce is often enriched with an extra egg yolk and/or cream, and the Tetrazzini is often mixed with spaghetti and baked like a casserole while the pot pie filling usually has potatoes and other extra vegetables in it. Other than that, same same same thing :)
And here's the way I made it. I'm calling it a la King 'cause that sounds classier. And I'm classy like that :)

Turkey A La King A La Alyss
(makes maybe 4 generous servings.. easily scaled up though!)

3 tbs butter
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 stalk of celery, sliced
2 cups sliced/chunked mushroom
salt, pepper, a pinch of thyme
3 tbs white flour
1 cup turkey or chicken broth (I actually used closer to 1 1/2 cups because I
had just that much left to use up)
1 cup milk (I used about 2/3 cup milk and 1/3 cup whipping cream, again, I had
it to use up)
2 cups chopped turkey meat
handful of frozen peas
a splash of red wine vinegar
Parmesan cheese

Melt butter in a big sauce pan over medium heat and add onions and celery.
Cook until they are softened and then add the mushrooms. Season with salt,
pepper and thyme. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are visibly wilted and
releasing moisture, but not yet browned. Sprinkle flour over the vegetables and
cook a few minutes, or until the flour is just starting to get blonde.
Add the turkey stock and milk, turn heat up to medium high and stir well to
combine the liquid with the floured vegetables. When the flour is combined well
add the turkey and the peas. Bring up to a light simmer and let the sauce
thicken a bit. Taste and adjust salt and pepper. Add a splash of vinegar if you
think it could use it - it probably could.
Serve over buttered egg noddles with lots of parmesan cheese on top.

November Lyrics
Artist(Band):Azure Ray

So I'm waiting for this test to end
So these lighter days can soon begin
I'll be alone but maybe more carefree
Like a kite that floats so effortlessly
I was afraid to be alone
Now I'm scared thats how I'd like to be
All these faces none the same
How can there be so many personalities
So many lifeless empty hands
So many hearts in great demand
And now my sorrow seems so far away
Until I'm taken by these bolts of pain
But I turn them off and tuck them away
'till these rainy days that make them stay
And then I'll cry so hard to these sad songs
And the words still ring, once here now gone
And they echo through my head everyday
And I dont think they'll ever go away
Just like thinking of your childhood home
But we cant go back we're on our own
Oh,
But i'm about to give this one more shot
And find it in myself
I'll find it in myself
So were speeding towards that time of year
To the day that marks that you're not here
And i think I'll want to be alone
So please understand if I dont answer the phone
I'll just sit and stare at my deep blue walls
Until I can see nothing at all
Only particles some fast some slow
All my eyes can see is all I know
Ohh..
But I'm about to give this one more shot
And find it in myself
I'll find it in myself

November

No shadow no stars
no moon no cars
November
it only believes
in a pile of dead leaves
and a moon
that's the color of bone

No prayers for November
to linger longer
stick your spoon in the wall
we'll slaughter them all

November has tied me
to an old dead tree
get word to April
to rescue me
November's cold chain

Made of wet boots and rain
and shiny black ravens
on chimney smoke lanes
November seems odd
you're my firing squad
November

With my hair slicked back
with carrion shellac
with the blood from a pheasant
and the bone from a hare
tied to the branches
of a roebuck stag
left to wave in the timber
like a buck shot flag

Go away you rainsnout
go away blow your brains out

ir Edmund Percival Hillary, KG, ONZ, KBE (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. On 29 May 1953 at the age of 33, he and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt.
Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school, making his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the RNZAF as a navigator during World War II. Before the successful expedition in 1953 to Everest, he had been part of a reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951 and an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He would later also travel to the North Pole.
Following his ascent of Everest he devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts many schools and hospitals were built in this remote region of Nepal.

Hillary was born to Percival Augustus Hillary and Gertrude Hillary, nee Clark, in Auckland, New Zealand, on 20 July 1919.[1] His family moved to Tuakau (south of Auckland) in 1920, after his father (who served at Gallipoli) was allocated land there.[2] His grandparents were early settlers in northern Wairoa in the mid 19th century after emigrating from Yorkshire, England.[3]
Hillary was educated at Tuakau Primary School and then Auckland Grammar School.[2] He finished primary school two years early, but struggled at high school, achieving only average marks.[4] He was initially smaller than his peers there and very shy so he took refuge in his books and daydreams of a life filled with adventure. His daily train journey to and from high school was over two hours each way, during which he regularly used the time to read. He gained confidence after he learned to box. At 16 his interest in climbing was sparked during a school trip to Mount Ruapehu. Though gangly at 6 ft 5 in (195cm) and uncoordinated, he found that he was physically strong and had greater endurance than many of his tramping companions.[5] He studied mathematics and science at The University of Auckland, and in 1939 completed his first major climb, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier, near Mt. Cook in the Southern Alps.[2] With his brother Rex, Hillary became a beekeeper,[1][6] a summer occupation that allowed him to pursue climbing in the winter.[7] His interest in beekeeping later led Hillary to commission Michael Ayrton to cast a golden sculpture in the shape of honeycomb in imitation of Daedalus's lost-wax process. This was placed in his New Zealand garden, where his bees took it over as a hive and "filled it with honey and their young".[8]
[edit]World War II

Upon the outbreak of World War II Hillary applied to join the air force, but withdrew the application before it was considered because he was "harassed by [his] religious conscience".[9] Following the introduction of conscription on the outbreak of war in the Pacific, in 1943 Hillary joined the RNZAF as a navigator and served on Catalina flying boats. In 1945 he was sent to Fiji and to the Solomon Islands where he was badly burned in a boating accident, after which he was repatriated to New Zealand.[9]
[edit]Expeditions

Hillary was part of a British reconnaissance expedition to Everest in 1951 led by Eric Shipton before joining the successful British attempt of 1953.
In 1952 Hillary and George Lowe were part of the British team led by Eric Shipton that attempted Cho Oyu. After that attempt failed due to the lack of route from the Nepal side, Hillary and Lowe crossed the Lho-La into Tibet and reached the old Camp II, on the northern side, where all the pre-war expeditions camped.

On top of the world: Tenzing on the summit of Mt Everest. Photograph taken by Hillary, 29 May 1953.
The route to Everest was closed by Chinese-controlled Tibet, and Nepal only allowed one expedition per year. A Swiss expedition (in which Tenzing took part) had attempted to reach the summit in 1952 but was turned back by bad weather 800 feet (240 m) from the summit. During a 1952 trip in the Alps Hillary discovered he and his friend George Lowe had been invited by the Joint Himalayan Committee for the approved British 1953 attempt and immediately accepted.[10]
Shipton was named as leader but was replaced by Hunt. Hillary considered pulling out, but both Hunt and Shipton talked him into remaining. Hillary was intending to climb with Lowe but Hunt named two teams for the assault: Tom Bourdillon and Charles Evans; and Hill

Back last week I watched the film pi for the first time.

Three days later I left for Bulgaria to spend Christmas with family. A split flight – London to rome, then on to sofia. Should have been simple. Ha! Fog makes it difficult for aircraft on the ground to see each other so when London was hit with some heavy fog it caused massive delays and cancellations of many flights, mine included. So after four hours of waiting in the airport I found myself on a flight to Prague, with a connection to sofia. It meant that I would arrive about six hours later than expected but hey, no problem, unless the flight gets delayed and I miss my connection. This is exactly what happened, I arrived in Prague more than an hour late and found myself stranded, the next flight available was the next day and fully booked. The airline staff explained that my only option was to come back in the morning, fly to Warsaw then on to sofia. It took some effort but I managed to get them to put me in a hotel for the night. They were less than friendly, as were all the staff I met in Prague airport – the people in the restaurant where I tried to get something to eat, the police outside who refused to direct me to where I was supposed to find a minibus that would take me to the hotel (after asking them for help they just pointed inside the terminal and said “information” then took massive pleasure in saying to each other in English “we don’t speak English, hahaha”). I felt totally screwed – “a stranger in a strange land”, no language, no local currency, no credit on my phone, nothing. Shit. To be honest I found myself feeling scared with no-one to reassure me, and I couldn’t even contact my family in Bulgaria to tell them what was happening. Haven’t felt like that since I was child. When I finally found the minibus for the hotel even the driver was unfriendly and less than helpful. Disaster!

The receptionist at the hotel was almost friendly but only through a sense of duty. I hadn’t slept in twenty four hours, tired so tired, hungry, confused, anxious and very frustrated. Why was this happening to me? It was supposed to be simple.

So just imagine when I exchanged my passport for my room key…

…coincidence or synchronicity? I didn’t care. The universe telling me that everything was perfect? Definitely.

Amazing!)))

from the Pope's catechetical address at the General Audience of January 12, 2011:

from the Pope's catechetical address at the General Audience of January 12, 2011:

Benedict XVI on Purgatory

Old news by now, but worth discussing.

From the Pope's catechetical address at the General Audience of January 12, 2011:

Catherine's thought on purgatory, for which she is particularly known, is condensed in the last two parts of the book mentioned at the beginning: "Treatise on Purgatory" and "Dialogues on the Soul and Body." It is important to observe that, in her mystical experience, Catherine never had specific revelations on purgatory or on souls that are being purified there.

However, in the writings inspired by our saint purgatory is a central element, and the way of describing it has original characteristics in relation to her era.

The first original feature refers to the "place" of the purification of souls. In her time [purgatory] was presented primarily with recourse to images connected to space:

There was thought of a certain space where purgatory would be found. For Catherine, instead, purgatory is not represented as an element of the landscape of the core of the earth; it is a fire that is not exterior but interior.

This is purgatory, an interior fire.

The saint speaks of the soul's journey of purification to full communion with God, based on her own experience of profound sorrow for the sins committed, in contrast to the infinite love of God (cf. Vita Mirabile, 171v).

We have heard about the moment of her conversion, when Catherine suddenly felt God's goodness, the infinite distance of her life from this goodness and a burning fire within her.

And this is the fire that purifies, it is the interior fire of purgatory.

Here also there is an original feature in relation to the thought of the era.

She does not begin, in fact, from the beyond to narrate the torments of purgatory -- as was usual at that time and perhaps also today -- and then indicate the path for purification or conversion.

Instead our saint begins from her own interior experience of her life on the path to eternity.

The soul, says Catherine, appears before God still bound to the desires and the sorrow that derive from sin, and this makes it impossible for it to enjoy the Beatific Vision of God.

Catherine affirms that God is so pure and holy that the soul with stains of sin cannot be in the presence of the Divine Majesty (cf. Vita Mirabile, 177r).

And we also realize how far we are, how full we are of so many things, so that we cannot see God.

The soul is conscious of the immense love and perfect justice of God and, in consequence, suffers for not having responded correctly and perfectly to that love, and that is why the love itself of God becomes a flame. Love itself purifies it from its dross of sin.

Theological and mystical sources typical of the era can be found in Catherine's work.

Particularly there is an image from Dionysius the Areopagite: that of the golden thread that unites the human heart with God himself. When God has purified man, he ties him with a very fine thread of gold, which is his love, and attracts him to himself with such strong affection that man remains as "overcome and conquered and altogether outside himself."

Thus the human heart is invaded by the love of God, which becomes the only guide, the sole motor of his existence (cf. Vita Mirabile, 246rv).

This situation of elevation to God and of abandonment to his will, expressed in the image of the thread, is used by Catherine to express the action of the divine light on souls in purgatory, light that purifies them and elevates them to the splendors of the shining rays of God (cf. Vita Mirabile, 179r).

Dear friends, the saints, in their experience of union with God, reach such profound "knowledge" of the divine mysteries, in which love and knowledge are fused, that they are of help to theologians themselves in their task of study, of "intelligentia fidei," of "intelligentia" of the mysteries of the faith, of real deepening in the mysteries, for example, of what purgatory is.

Did the pre-VII Church got anything right? - doddering fools!

What did we ever do before the enlightened ones came along to set the Church straight?

"Purgatory is a process not a place"...is there nothing, as our dearly beloved Pope St. Pius X wrote one hundred years ago, that the modernists cannot lay their hands on to change?

I have been waiting for someone to post this.

Guess it got pushed aside by the beatification and Assisi III news.

I find it all very intersting what most Catholics believe, if anything at all, about Purgatory these days.

I've heard everything about how wonderful it is, about how only bad people go there and most of us are "saved,"

I've even heard that we're now living in Purgatory on Earth and next up is Heaven for sure.

We need more teaching like this from the Holy Father.

Well done.

Early in the Morning....

Early in the Morning....

.....a hero was made. I saw this news story, and had to share it.

The following story appeared on Yahoo, and I simply copy/pasted to here:

The most important trips aren't about getting somewhere. They're about getting to someone. (via Elliott.org)

But in an age of mounting airline fees, reduced in-flight services, uncomfortable security pat-downs and multi-day delays caused by erupting volcanoes, it's easy to forget that.

Amid the cries of "I've already paid for my hotel!" and "You need to get me to Atlanta!" anger and inconvenience frequently blind us to the fact that travel is ultimately about people. We also forget that airline employees - bound by big company rules and regulations - get frustrated, too.

Enter Nancy, whose travel triumph, tempered by a great deal of sadness, has turned an unnamed Southwest Airlines pilot into an online hero.

Nancy reads a blog by Christopher Elliott, a consumer advocate and journalist, and wrote to him about her husband's recent ordeal traveling on flights from Los Angeles to Tucson to Denver. Their situation makes complaints about leg room look downright petty.

"Last night, my husband and I got the tragic news that our three-year-old grandson in Denver had been murdered by our daughter's live-in boyfriend," she wrote. "He is being taken off life support tonight at 9 o'clock and his parents have opted for organ donation, which will take place immediately. Over 25 people will receive his gift tonight and many lives will be saved."

So early in the morning, after what must have been a torturous night's sleep, Nancy and her husband arranged for him to fly from Los Angeles, where he was traveling for work, to Tuscon, where he would step off one plane and immediately onto another one headed to Denver. "The ticketing agent was holding back tears throughout the call," Nancy wrote. "I'm actually her step-mother and it's much more important for my husband to be there than for me to be there."

Mourning the loss of his child's child, and no doubt worrying about his grieving daughter, he was likely in no state to travel. Airport stress only compounded his despair. He arrived at LAX two hours before his scheduled flight time, but quickly realized that delays at baggage check and security would keep him from making the flight.

According to Nancy, he struggled to hold back tears as he pleaded with TSA and Southwest Airlines staff to fast-track him through the lines that were moving like molasses. Even though missing his flight could mean missing a final chance to see his grandson, no one seemed to care.

Too much was at stake to simply roll over and cry. When he finally cleared security - several minutes after his flight's planned departure - he grabbed his computer bag, shoes and belt, and ran to his terminal wearing only his socks. The pilot and the gate agent were waiting for him.

"Are you Mark? We held the plane for you and we're so sorry about the loss of your grandson," the pilot reportedly said. "They can't go anywhere without me and I wasn't going anywhere without you. Now relax. We'll get you there. And again, I'm so sorry."

It's hard to underestimate the courage of the pilot's decision. The flight, which ultimately departed 12 minutes late, likely had hundreds of passengers rolling their eyes in contempt. And given that any delay has knock-on effects for passengers at the destination airport, his decision placed Southwest at risk of facing the wrath of travelers, and more than a few demands for compensation.

Elliott, who brought the story to the blogosphere's attention, approached Southwest about the story, half expecting the airline to be outraged by a pilot's refusal to push the on-time departure.

Instead, they told him they were "proud" of their pilot, a man who clearly understands that taking a child off life support has consequences that run deeper than a flight taking off late. As Nancy wrote: "My husband was able to take his first deep breath of the day." Hopefully, over time, his daughter can do the same.

This is exactly why I will continue to fly Southwest Airlines when I travel if they have a flight available to my destination.

The John Adams Earbox: A 10-CD Retrospective

The John Adams Earbox: A 10-CD Retrospective

Having earned his composing stripes after the 1960s, John Adams had the pioneering work of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley close at hand as he ventured into his trade. And, while minimalism's historical continuum helps place Adams, he used Reich, Glass, and Riley (among others) only as a starting point. And here's proof: a 10-CD retrospective of nearly all Adams's recorded compositions on Nonesuch Records, the label that also issued Steve Reich 1965-1995 and Kronos Quartet: 25 Years. Adams's Harmonium, a choral work of startling energy and effervescence, appears here in a new recording, as do distillations of both The Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, two path-clearing operas. Over the span of a career covered by Earbox, Adams has returned minimalism to traditional instrumental ensembles as well as to projects that at once advanced a political commentary and took that commentary back to orchestral audiences. And so, in far less time than his predecessors, Adams created works that now play like standard repertoire pieces: The Wound Dresser and Shaker Loops and the Violin Concerto--all of them are here. What these works demonstrate is a fierce creativity on the one hand and perhaps a hunger for commercial advances on the other. Adams may at times be a bustling free thinker, but he sounds ever conscious of what audiences are listening to. As for the works themselves, they remain every bit as daunting as when written.
Some may object to particular selections. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky, for example, hardly ranks with Adams's best work. But this box isn't a mere best-of; it's an almost-all-of. At times terrifically American--especially in the news-aware operas and their narrative pragmatism--Adams well deserves a major box set, and its coverage is appropriate to his varied, stylistically diverse output. As with any large-scale retrospective, Earbox--which fairly bristles with Adams's new composition, Slonimsky's Earbox--has spots where fans might balk at the quality of the composer's writing. But it's got a fantastic accompanying booklet along with its many hours of inarguably modern and thoroughly listener-friendly music. --Andrew Bartlett

Protests halt Paris torch relay early

By JEROME PUGMIRE and ELAINE GANLEY, Associated Press Writers
4/7/08 11:26am CST (28 minutes ago)

Security officials snuffed out the Olympic torch and carried it through Paris in the safety of a bus at least five times Monday before canceling the final run of a relay repeatedly disrupted by chaotic protests against China's human rights record.

Security officials put the torch on the bus for the last stretch but stopped right outside its destination, a Paris stadium, so a runner could finish the last 15 feet.

At least two activists earlier got within almost an arm's length of the flame before they were grabbed by police. A protester threw water at the torch but failed to extinguish it and was taken away. Officers tackled numerous protesters and carried some away.

The chaos started on the Eiffel Tower's first floor moments after the relay began. Green Party activist Sylvain Garel lunged for the first torchbearer, former hurdler Stephane Diagana, and shouted "Freedom for the Chinese!" Security officials pulled Garel back.

"It is inadmissible that the games are taking place in the world's biggest prison," Garel said later.

The procession continued but a crowd of activists waving Tibetan flags soon interrupted it by confronting the torchbearer on a road along the Seine River. The demonstrators did not appear to get within reach of the torch, but its flame was put out by security officers and put on board a bus to continue part way along the route.

Less than an hour later, the flame was being carried out of a traffic tunnel by a woman athlete in a wheelchair when the procession was halted by activists who booed and chanted "Tibet." Once again, the torch was temporarily extinguished and put on a bus.

The third time, security officials apparently interrupted the procession because they spotted demonstrators ahead. After the torch was put on a bus, protesters threw plastic bottles, cups and pieces of bread at the vehicle and at a male wheelchair-bound athlete.

The torch disappeared back inside the bus a fourth time shortly after a protester approached it with a fire extinguisher near the Louvre art museum. Police grabbed the demonstrator before he could start to spray.

The flame was whisked into a bus again outside the National Assembly, where protesters gathered. A session of parliament was interrupted and a banner on the building read: "Respect for Human Rights in China." City Hall draped its building with a banner reading, "Paris defends human rights around the world."

Other demonstrators scaled the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame cathedral and hung banners depicting the Olympic rings as handcuffs.

About 3,000 officers were deployed on motorcycles, in jogging gear and with inline roller skates.

A Paris police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to media, says at least 28 people have been taken into custody during the protests.

Pro-Tibet advocate Christophe Cunniet said he and around 20 other Tibet advocates were detained after they waved Tibetan flags, threw flyers and tried to block the route. Cunniet said police kicked him, cutting his forehead. "I'm still dazed," he said.

Mireille Ferri, a Green Party official, said she was held by police for two hours because she approached the Eiffel Tower area with a fire extinguisher.

In various locations throughout the city, activists angry about China's human rights record and crackdown on protesters in Tibetan areas carried Tibetan flags and waved signs reading "the flame of shame." Riot police squirted tear gas to break up a sit-in protest by about 300 demonstrators who blocked the torch route.

"The flame shouldn't have come to Paris," said protester Carmen de Santiago, who had "free" painted on one cheek and "Tibet" on the other.

Torchbearer Diagana said he was disappointed to see the protests, though he understood why activists were there.

"Nothing is happening as planned. It's unfortunate," he told France 2 television.

At least one athlete was supportive of demonstrators. Former Olympic champion Marie-Jose Perec told French television: "I think it is very, very good that people have mobilized like that."

Pro-Chinese activists carrying national flags held counter-demonstrations.

"The Olympic Games are about sports. It's not fair to turn them into politics," said Gao Yi, a Chinese second-year doctoral student in Paris in computer sciences.

France's former sports minister, Jean-Francois Lamour, stressed that, though the torch was put out aboard the bus, the Olympic flame itself still burned in the lantern where it is kept overnight and on airplane flights.

"The torch has been extinguished but the flame is still there," he told France Info radio.

Best of Concord Years

Best of Concord Years

AUCTION DESCRIPTION

It's redundant to call any Tito Puente collection 'the best of,' because every time the man picked up a drumstick or mallet, he gave the best he had to offer. The daunting and unenviable task of compiling the best among the dozens of tracks El Rey made for Concord was made easier by dividing this collection between Puente's more danceable pieces and his jazzier arrangements. Disc one's 12 tracks serve up the New York-Puerto Rican soul and Afro-Cuban rhythms--with mambos, merengues, cha chas, and more rhythmic bursts hopping about. Puente's most famous composition, "Oye Como Va," appears in a rousing live version that justifies its status as one of National Public Radio's 100 most influential songs of the 20th century. Disc two showcases the strong soloists and arrangers that have always been jewels in Puente's musical crown. The amazing transformation that the legendary percussionist and his arrangers put on the most identifiable music is concentrated here as songs strongly associated with other artists, such as "On Broadway" (George Benson), "Take Five" (Dave Brubeck), and "Sun Goddess" (Ramsey Lewis) get elevated by Puente's Latin-fire, signature handprints. This is an essential disc for any serious collector of Latin jazz. --Mark A. Ruffin

BOEING 307 STRATOLINER CLIPPER FLYING CLOUD

BOEING 307 STRATOLINER CLIPPER FLYING CLOUD

The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum welcomed today (Aug. 6) the sole surviving Boeing S-307 Stratoliner to its new home when the silver pioneering airliner arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia for display at the museum's new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. The museum's companion facility, adjacent to the airport, opens to the public Dec. 15.

The luxuriously appointed Stratoliner, built in the late 1930s, was the world's first passenger airplane to be pressurized, allowing it to avoid rough weather by flying at unprecedented altitudes (20,000 feet) for transports of the era.

The airplane has been in the museum's collection since 1972 but because of its size and weight could not be displayed at the museum's flagship building on the National Mall. A team of volunteers and Boeing staff performed extensive restoration work on the airplane in Seattle.

"Visitors to the Udvar-Hazy Center will take one look at this airplane and be transported back to a glamorous age when the world became smaller for the traveler who required speed and luxury," said Gen. J.R. "Jack" Dailey, director of the National Air and Space Museum. "We are indebted to the Boeing restoration team for turning back the clock on this beautiful aircraft."

The Stratoliner arrived in Northern Virginia following an appearance at the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual Fly-In at Oshkosh, Wisc. The airplane flew from Allegheny County Airport near Pittsburgh, where it landed August 5th because of bad weather.

With a wingspan of 107 feet and a cabin nearly 12 feet wide, the Clipper Flying Cloud will be exhibited at ground level in the Udvar-Hazy (pronounced OOD-var HAH-zee) Center aviation hangar.

More than 200 aircraft are ultimately destined for the aviation hangar, which is 10 stories high and the length of three football fields--enough space to hold the museum's building on the National Mall inside with room to spare.

The center will eventually display the 80 percent of the national air and space collection not currently housed at the building on the Mall or on loan to other museums and institutions.

Smaller aircraft at the center will hang at two levels from the aviation hangar's trusses. Rising walkways will allow visitors to see the suspended aircraft up close and give them a sense of soaring.

The Clipper Flying Cloud was delivered to Pan American Airways with two others in 1940. The aircraft carried 33 passengers and a crew of five. The Pan American Airways airplane was reconfigured to seat 45 passengers. Stratoliners included space for berths for overnight travel; paneling in the cabin and lavatory; wall fabric featuring the Pan Am logo, world map and exotic animals; and eight divans.

The Clipper Flying Cloud began service flying Caribbean routes for two years. During World War II, it flew in South America under the direction of the U.S. Army Air Forces. In 1946, it made daily runs between New York and Bermuda. Throughout the next two decades it passed through the hands of several owners, and once served as a presidential plane for the notorious Haitian leader "Papa Doc" Duvalier. After its Haitian sojourn, the Clipper Flying Cloud landed in Arizona.

In 1969, a visiting National Air and Space Museum curator spotted the airplane in Arizona and immediately recognized its historic significance, even while its then-owner planned to convert it into a fire bomber. The Smithsonian subsequently acquired the aircraft and later made arrangements with the Boeing Company for the restoration, dubbed "Operation Flying Cloud," at the Seattle plant where the Stratoliner was originally built.

Boeing technicians and former Pan American employees voluntarily spent six years completely restoring the Stratoliner before it made an emergency landing in Elliott Bay in 2002. Since then, the restoration team has performed additional work so that visitors to the Udvar-Hazy Center will have the opportunity to view the aircraft as it looked the day it rolled off the assembly line more than 60 years ago.

Artifact and exhibit-related deliveries to the center continue on an almost daily basis leading up to the December opening when some 80 aircraft will be in place - more than are currently displayed at the Mall building. Many have been dismantled because of their size and must travel in pieces. Those aircraft are being reassembled in the hangar and moved to their display locations. After the Udvar-Hazy Center opens, deliveries will resume early next year at a slower pace and continue until the facility is full.

The first construction phase of the center also includes the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar, named for the aerospace pioneer; the 164-foot-tall Donald D. Engen Observation Tower, named for the museum's late director; the Claude Moore Education Center, named for the Virginia philanthropist; an IMAX theater; and a food court.

Construction work continues on the Mc

HEINKEL HE 219 A-2/R4 UHU (EAGLE OWL)

HEINKEL HE 219 A-2/R4 UHU (EAGLE OWL)

The He-219 has been described as the best night fighter operated in World War II by the German Air Force, the Luftwaffe. It may have been the best night fighter of the war. Only the American Northrop P-61 "Black Widow" shares the He-219's unique status of being designed for night operation. The He-219 was fast, maneuverable, and carried devastating firepower. It was the only piston-engined Luftwaffe night fighter which could meet the fleet British De Havilland "Mosquito" on equal terms. Advanced features included remote-controlled gun turrets, a pressurized cabin, the first steerable nosewheel on an operational German aircraft, and the world's first ejection seats on an operational aircraft.

The He-219 was conceived by Ernst Heinkel in the summer of 1940 as Project P.1060, a private-venture multirole fighter. The design was rejected as too radical by the German Aviation Ministry (RLM), where Heinkel had many enemies. By late 1941, night bombing by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) had reached such serious proportions that the existing Junkers Ju-88 and Messerschmitt Bf-110 night fighters were unable to counter it. At the urging of Maj. Gen. Josef Kammhuber, commander of night fighters, the RLM asked Heinkel to redesign the P.1060 as a radar-equipped night fighter. The Germans first used aerial intercept radar successfully against a British night bomber in early 1942. The clumsy radar antennas, which looked like an array of toasting forks, slowed the Ju-88 night fighter by some 40 kph (25 mph). More speed was needed.

The faster He-219V-1 prototype flew on November 15, 1942, only 11 months after the design request. Following a competition with the Ju-88S night fighter in early 1943, the Luftwaffe ordered 300 He-219s. Production was delayed when RAF raids on Heinkel's Rostock and Vienna-Schwechat factories destroyed nearly all of the drawings in March and April 1943.

A small batch of preproduction He-219A-0s was nevertheless delivered to 1st Squadron, 1st Night Fighter Group (I/NJG-1) at Venlo, The Netherlands, in April 1943. In the first operational mission, on the night of June 11-12, 1943, one of these preproduction aircraft downed five British "Lancaster" bombers. Over the next 10 days, 20 RAF bombers were shot down, including six of the extremely fast "Mosquitoes" (which commonly hit speeds near 650 kph/400 mph). The He-219 was fitted with the combat-tested Telefunken FuG-212 ("FuG" for "funkgerat" or "radio equipment") "Lichenstein" C-1 intercept radar, first used operationally in early 1942. The radar's range was limited to 4-6 km (3-4 mi), and its coverage was only a 70-degree cone facing forward, so the aircraft worked best in an integrated air defense system with ground radars, radio networks, and ground observers pointing out potential targets.

The He-219 was universally popular with its flight and ground crews and was considered a "first-class" aircraft by its British foes. Later versions, like the A-2/R1 in August 1943 (the "R" indicating "Rustsatz", or "field conversion"), had a "Schrage Musik" (Jazz Music) gun installation, with two MK-108 cannon firing obliquely upward from behind the cockpit. This 30 mm cannon was so powerful that three of its explosive rounds were enough to bring down a heavy bomber like the B-17. The oblique installation allowed attacks to be made on bombers from their vulnerable undersides while avoiding defensive gunfire. "Schrage Musik" proved so effective that it became the preferred armament of the night fighter aces.

German night fighters commonly intercepted British bombers by homing in on emissions resulting from security lapses: for instance, identification-friend-or-foe transmitters left on, or navigation and bombing radars radiating continuously. To counter Germany's effective, coordinated use of aerial and surface radars, Britain began using air-dropped metallized chaff (codenamed "Window"). This blinded both ground radars and the first-generation "Lichtenstein" C-1 aerial radar.

Eleven He-219s were built in 1943 and 195 in 1944 at plants in Vienna-Schwechat and Rostock-Marienehe. The Schwechat staffing included some 2,000 prisoners from the concentration camp at Mauthausen. The A-5 was the first major He-219 production version, delayed until March 1944 by various problems. The improved, longer-wavelength Telefunken FuG-220 "Lichtenstein" SN-2 radar was fitted, which was not blinded by chaff. Equipped with a different but still clumsy antenna array, called "Hirschgeweih" or "antlers", this radar provided detection out to 4000 m (3.1 mi). Nevertheless, mid-air collisions with targets at night were still commonplace.

RAF bomber losses on night operations in 1943 had been 3.6 percent, despite the use of chaff and other early electronic warfare techniques like active

BOEING LGM-118A PEACEKEEPER
The Peacekeeper was the U.S. Air Force's most powerful, accurate and technologically advanced intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) when it served as a deterrent from 1986 to 2005. The USAF began planning for a missile to replace Minuteman ICBMs in 1972, and named the projected weapon "missile X," or MX. It would use the latest targeting technology to deliver many independently targeted nuclear warheads by each missile. The ability to deliver several warheads on one missile is known as MIRV, or Multiple Independently targeted Re-entry Vehicles. MX eventually was named Peacekeeper and designated LGM-118A.

Full-scale development of the Peacekeeper began in 1979, and the first test flight took place in 1983 at Vandenberg AFB, Calif. It became operational in 1986, when ten missiles were deployed at F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo. By 1988, 50 missiles were in service there.

Basing--whether in stationary hardened silos or on mobile railways that would keep the Soviets guessing at the missiles' true location--was a major issue during Peacekeeper's development. Funding problems and competing ideas about the wisdom of each basing solution delayed Peacekeeper production and deployment. Eventually, it was decided to base all LGM-118As in hardened, underground silos.

Peacekeeper was a four-stage missile, and it was the first U.S. ICBM to use "cold launch" technology. This meant the missile was shot out of a storage canister in a modified Minuteman underground silo by a massive burst of high-pressure steam, and its first-stage solid-rocket motor ignited only after the missile cleared the silo. The next two stages, also solid-fuel rockets, boosted the missile's payload into space. The fourth stage, or post-boost vehicle, contained the missile's guidance and re-entry systems. This liquid-fueled stage maneuvered in space to properly orient the re-entry system, which activated and released up to ten nuclear warheads. Each warhead was contained in a small MK-21 re-entry vehicle, and each followed an independent ballistic, or unpowered, path during descent to its target. Accuracy depended on the warheads being released in the right direction at the proper altitude and speed.

The Peacekeeper modernized and improved U.S. nuclear deterrence, but the end of the Cold War made its mission less crucial. The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) II, signed in 1993 with Russia, removed all multiple-warhead ICBMs, and thus, spelled the end for Peacekeeper. As a result of the changed strategic world situation, deactivation of all 50 LGM-118As began in 2003 and was completed in 2005. Some Peacekeepers, no longer needed as ICBMs, were used as satellite launch vehicles.

AVRO 504K
In July 1913, the British A.V. Roe (Avro) Co. tested its first model 504 aircraft, and numerous variants followed -- based upon the type of engine installed. The 504K version had adapters, which allowed the installation of several different types of rotary engines. This aircraft had an undistinguished combat career, but it proved to be an excellent trainer.

After America entered World War I, it took many months to build the training facilities needed by the U.S. Army Air Service. Meanwhile, many American student pilots went overseas for flight training. Those sent to Great Britain learned on the Avro 504K trainer before advancing to combat aircraft. The U.S. Army Air Service eventually established its main training center at Issoudun, France, and in July 1918, the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) commanders ordered 52 Avro 504K aircraft for teaching aerobatics at Issoudun. After the war, the Army Air Service brought a few Avro 504K aircraft back to the United States, and they remained in training service for a few years.

Using original parts, the Royal Canadian Air Force's Aircraft Maintenance & Development Unit built the aircraft on display in 1966-1967 with a 110-hp Le Rhone J rotary engine. It arrived at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in May 2003, and it is painted to represent one of the 52 Avro 504K aerobatic trainers used at the AEF No. 3 Instruction Center, Issoudun, France, in 1918.
