Firstly, with Daniel Scholz, Marie Bonnet, Edda Wiersch and Mathias Znidarec as Eduard, Charlotte, Ottilie and Hauptmann Otto, she delivers an interpretation that is powerful in its own way, which in the Kammerspiel of the Darmstadt State Theater doesn’t give a damn about schoolboy ideas of faithfulness to the work. Secondly, this implementation is reminiscent of Peter Stein’s 1969 director’s classic “Torquato Tasso” in all its imagery, color and artificiality. Thirdly, antiquarian to blasphemous can be written about it well. Which would fill the saddlebags for now. On horseback and off we go!

Interestingly, Byron, Shelley, Mary Godwin and Doctor Polidori met at Lake Geneva in 1816, which acts like a gothic echo of Goethe’s subjunctive-staring swinger vision.
All of the characters in the novel, except for the mostly naked Znidarec as Otto, wear floral patterns. life in ornament? Eduard’s and Charlotte’s face masks, which rigidly and vividly indicate the descent into natural life, are striking. Goethe makes Eduard the “rich baron in the prime of life” or old sack of nobility. There is much to suggest that Goetze shows us the “Olympian” Goethe and knows the Goethehaus on Frauenplan. Goethe built a Roman staircase there, set up casts of the monumental Juno Ludovisi and mythologized his duke as Jupiter and himself as Apollo in the pictorial program. With Goetze, Eduard is enthroned in the style of the time and embodies the same principle; the pajama trousers with zebra stripes stand for the living area (Goethe’s bourgeois half), the silvery and the Octavian-like short hairstyle indicate the “Olympian”. Charlotte is always there and adds her Livia/Juno character to the marriage yoke.
Lustrous and ruinous corner
It is clear that the comparison only goes so far. After all, the stage shines, wide and divided in two, similar to the Frauenplan facade, between classic will to style and cheap material. If the frame of the panoramic window looks like part of a modernist villa, you soon recognize the wood grain and feel reminded of the Goethe House (plaster reliefs, vaults made of plastered slats, murals on paper). The sofa and tub are on the garage pillars, on the left everything merges into a dilapidated corner with graffiti paintings, concrete ceiling and piles of leaves. Above all: a crystal chandelier.
