The feature film with which Wes Anderson (Houston, 1969) debuted in 1996, Bottle Rocket , allows you to see how you begin to build a very personal style that is in the process of gestation. Once forged from his second film, it is so idiosyncratic that you only need to look at a few seconds of footage to immediately identify its author. Two and a half decades later, his tenth production, The French Chronicle , is an authentic catalog of the repertoire of elements that make up the Wes Anderson style . Taking advantage of its premiere, we are going to synthesize the elements that make up one of the most virtuous aesthetics of current cinema.

Still from ‘The French Chronicle’

Twentieth Century Fox

We will start with the script: dysfunctional families abound in his films, with absent or toxic parents (there is an autobiographical substrate due to the divorce of their parents in their childhood). Also the alternative families in which its eccentric characters find accommodation. Beneath the tone of comedy, there is always a substrate of melancholy, loss and the presence of death. The construction is not realistic, his films are fables populated by picturesque individuals who inhabit stylized settings.

And we come to the central element of the Anderson style, its visual aesthetics based on two parameters: precision and geometry, which structure its planes from a central axis measured to the millimeter. To this are added other characteristic resources: zenith shots, quick sweeps and descriptive tracking shots. Your frames are like living pictures in which nothing is randomly placed. And this brings us to production design: costumes and sets are crucial to outlining the characters. He also likes to incorporate models and tricks, always analog, in the old way. Added to this is the color palette: always warm, pastel (in The French Chronicle incorporates the use of black and white), and within this range each film develops its own color code (this can be seen very clearly in the two contrasting eras of El Gran Hotel Budapest ).

In the visual aspect, cinematographer Robert Yeoman is key, with whom Anderson has worked on all his films except the two shot in stop motion ( Fantastic Mr. Fox e Isle of dogs , and in these the director of photography also repeats: Tristan Oliver). This is another characteristic of the filmmaker: he works with a very loyal team and this also applies to the troupe of actors. Among them there are two who have also acted as co-writers: Owen Wilson in the first three films and Jason Schwartzman in three others (Noah Baumbach and Roman Coppola have also repeated as screenwriters).

There is a third fundamental actor, fetish: Bill Murray, which brings us to the next key to Anderson’s cinema. Murray is the contemporary master of what Anglo-Saxons call Deadpan Comedy (which would be translated as dry, expressionless humor, based on containment). The geniuses of this record are Buster Keaton and Jacques Tati (by the way: in The French Chronicle there is a delicious tribute to My uncle ) and nowadays it is used by filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch, the Swede Roy Andersson or the French Quentin Dupieux; in literature the equivalent is the Canadian Patrick deWitt. The handling of this register of comedy makes Anderson’s acting work in the cinema very peculiar: with gestures and tempos that tend towards theatricality and cartoons, and therefore it is not surprising that he has shot two films in stop motion with articulated dolls.

More characteristics of his cinema: a taste for lists, for objects vintage , by a narrative voice that tells the story, by curtains or intertitles between the parties … All of this is present in The French Chronicle , which is a love letter to the old journalism in extinction (melancholy again) and also to the French culture mythologized by the Americans and its cinema (there are nods to Tati, but also to Godard from the sixties in his creative fullness and Truffaut).

The film tells the story and preparation of the final issue of The French Dispatch , published by American expatriates in an imaginary French provincial town called Ennui-sur-Blasé. Its director – played by Murray – is loosely based on Harold Ross, the mythical founder of The New Yorker , a cosmopolitan and sophisticated magazine to which enthusiastic tribute is paid.

The narration is episodic and stages three chronicles: the story of a prisoner painter, his prisoner muse, and a devious dealer (inspired by the historical Joseph Duveen); a sixties student revolt and a delirious gastronomic report on police cooking that is spiced up with a kidnapping. Critics of the director will hate the film with fervor and it will seem the height of mannerism, for those of us who consider Wes Anderson a marvel, it is a feast. And if you’re wanting more, Dome published Ian Nathan’s lavishly illustrated book on the filmmaker in March.

A curiosity of The French Chronicle is that the poster has been made in Cadaqués. It is explained to us by its author, Javi Aznarez (Barcelona, 1978), an illustrator who has lived in this town for years. The connection is the Franco-American producer Octavia Peissel, who has spent the summer there since she was a child and has worked with Anderson since Moonrise Kingdom. She took Aznarez’s drawings to the director as a candidate for the graphic part of the film. He was chosen and has spent three years working on the project. The initial commission was to draw magazine covers and a portrait that appear in the film, then the poster was added. He tells us: “Anderson gave me a lot of freedom, it was a pleasure to meet him, I was two weeks filming in France. Only in the case of the poster did he make a lot of difference to me which elements should appear. There were so many that for the first time I drew with digital technology, because I usually work with ink. ” He is also the author of the drawings for the video clip Aline, featuring the Jarvis Cocker song for the film. After the success of the “Snyder cut” of “Justice League”, the popular film director released a new film, and although it seems impossible, it is an even more ambitious and risky. “The army of the dead” (or “Army of the Dead”, as in its original title), in addition to representing the first production of Zack Snyder Out of the DC Extended Universe in about a decade, it marks his foray into a subgenre as profitable as it is difficult to master: that of the zombies, and the first comments assure that it is a step that he has taken firmly.

SIGHT: Zack Snyder returns to the zombies with Netflix: “The pandemic gives you a new perspective on the film” | INTERVIEW

Skip Intro was able to converse this week with Dave Bautista, the protagonist of the film, who is confident that this story will sink deep into the hearts of the fans. These are some of the reasons why the actor considers this new Netflix production to stand out:

1. A DIFFERENT HERO

In “Army of the Dead,” Dave Bautista is Scott Ward, a hero of the war against the zombies who, after retiring, makes a living in a hamburger restaurant on the outskirts of the town where he lives, but who will decide Return to the battlefield upon receiving a tempting offer to take on a mission to go do a heist in a quarantine zone infested with the undead.

The actor assures that this character is not like any other action hero that has been seen in the cinema or in his own filmography.

“The hero of this movie is not a predictable action hero. He is not perfect, he makes mistakes and seeks redemption. He has a heart, emotions, he is sensitive and what he wants most in this world is to reconnect with his daughter, which is the most interesting part of the script for me ”.

2. ALL THE BLOODS

The cast of this film has faces from different backgrounds and in important roles. The Japanese Hiroyuki Sanada, for example, is Bly Tanaka, a tycoon who will be crucial in the fate of Bautista’s character. And the Mexican Ana de la Reguera takes a new leap in Hollywood in the role of Cruz, another key character in the outcome.

Just like these actors, there are performers from different parts of the world. From France to Germany and Canada. For Bautista, this integration of different cultures does not feel forced into history, but subliminally leaves a great message.

The cast is very diverse and there is a lot of unity in the group and I think that is a very good message, and it is not a message that we are throwing at your face, because in reality the film has been made to entertain and it is a fun film And well told, but when you see those people of different backgrounds and colors, you subconsciously get that message: this is who we are, we are different, but when we come together we can achieve anything.

3. HIS BEST ROLE

Personally, the actor also says he is satisfied with what he has achieved in his filmography with this story. Although many still see him as the ex-wrestler turned movie star, Bautista highlights the end result of his performance, and hopes it will be a before and after in his career.

I haven’t had an acting opportunity like this before, I think it’s something very new. I hope it shed more light on me as an actor, I feel like I have achieved a lot as an actor in this movie.

4. AN UNEXPECTED TURN

Without giving you spoilers, we can tell you – after having seen the film – that it presents a twist in the plot that will leave more than one speechless. Asked about it, Bautista told us that it had been very gratifying for him, to be able to give a great emotional contribution to the story with the outcome of his character.

As an actor I want to be able to show different ranges of emotions and for a person like me it is not easy to take on roles like these and that is why I feel that I have achieved a lot with this film. I have not only shown Dave Batuista’s action side, but also my emotional side, because I know that people don’t see me like that, and I want them to see me like that, because being an actor requires it.

5. DIFFERENT RECORDS

Finally, as a reflection on what is coming for his career, Bautista pointed to the importance of having a balance as an actor, something that he emphasizes that viewers will be able to see in his role in “The Army of the Dead.”

I have always felt that I will not be able to become a better actor unless they give me better roles, and unless people see you as an actor who can reach different registers, they will not offer you different roles, and I am behind that, I want to be a better actor and I want juicy roles. I think I have achieved a lot with this movie and I am very proud of that.

Households are exposed to the most extreme situations in horror movies. But they are not always in danger: sometimes they are the danger themselves. And in those opposites mothers always stand out. Sometimes they are presented as heroines who do not measure their efforts to protect their children and other times they are to blame for all the traumas. They oscillate between victims and perpetrators. Almost no gray.

They serve to represent all the good of this world or an evil that even transcends the earthly. His emotions mark the pulse of history: we saw him on the way Mia Farrow travels in Rosemary’s Baby until Toni Collette’s recent (and brilliant) performance in The Devil’s legacy. In the following list, we return to the great classics of the genre and we remember five iconic mother figures.

Norma Bates, the mysterious character from “Psycho”

A mysterious halo already enveloped her “presence” when her silhouette was barely visible in a house on the hill. But that would not be his only role in Psychosis (1960). Despite the fact that the viewer is convinced that she is the guest killer, the final revelation continues to be a milestone in the cinema: the murderer is her son, who is transformed at the time of handing out stabs. Norma is just a skeleton collecting cobwebs in a basement.

Paying off a pop culture debt, the series Bates Motel finally explored the mythology of this character. Thanks to the tremendous interpretation of Vera Farmiga, fans of Alfred Hitchcock’s original movie knew as this woman transferred every one of his obsessions and misogyny to Norman. So emblematic is the character that he will always be a reference to talk about the murky bonds between mother and son.

Chris MacNeil, the underrated heroine of “The Exorcist”

More than 50 years after its premiere, The Exorcist (1973) it is still the film by which any aspiring best horror film is measured. Not only did it work because director William Friedkin applied the pessimism of the fledgling “New Hollywood,” it was also possible thanks to the level of the performances. It was from that combination that he was born a masterpiece as creepy as it is realistic.

And if the cast must be highlighted, Ellen Burstyn looks like Chris MacNeil, the mother of the young woman who is possessed by heck. His character exhausts all the logical ways to help poor Regan, but with no other alternatives, he resorts to a priest to free her from the devil. He never gives up on the welfare of his daughter. Not even when he sees her floating in the room or turning his head 360 degrees.

Margaret White, the real terror in “Carrie”

Following the Stephen King novel, director Brian De Palma delivered a true gem of horror. It was a movie that not only scared, it also distressed. And that’s largely due to Margaret White’s attitudes toward Carrie, his telekinetic daughter. This religious fanatic may look like a good Samaritanbut he has really disturbing delusions.

The moment where his madness is most exposed is when he interprets the teenager’s first menstruation as a satanic sign and decided to lock her in a closet. Even when she’s conspicuously affectionate It doesn’t take long for him to show his true intentions: to murder his own daughter. There may be many versions of this terrifying mom, but Piper Laurie is still the most disturbing.

Pamela Voorhees, much more than the mother of the monster of “Tuesday the 13th”

When it premiered Tuesday the 13th (1980), the critic had no mercy. His technical bill on the edge of amateurism and some violent scenes were not celebrated by the specialists. Instead, the romance with horror lovers was instantaneous. The way the facts are manipulated is so effective that the viewer is truly shocked when the perpetrator of the crimes is revealed: Pamela Voorhees, the mother of a boy who drowned in Crystal Lake.

But beyond the red herrings that director Sean S. Cunningham tends like hooks, the “plot twist”Works by the great performance of Betsy Palmer. She is shown as a very hurt and even guilty mother for the fateful night that Jason “died”. However, the voices in his head order him not to sit down and cry and start a real teenage butcher shop. Typical logic of a killer eighties.

Wendy Torrance, a woman who suffered “The Shining” (and Stanley Kubrick)

Director Stanley Kubrick turned the filming of The Shining (1980) in a true nightmare for Shelley Duvall. His scenes did not conform to him and he made him repeat them countless times. It’s no secret: the actress would have had a better stay at the Overlook Hotel than on set. That excessive pressure served to make his character look as affected as we see him in front of the camera.

Wendy may seem very fearful and vulnerable, but she is far from it. Despite her tears, and how her pulse trembles when she faces Jack, she does her best to defend little Danny.

Although actress Daisy Ridley, 29, has gone on to star in “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Chaos Walking,” she will forever be known as Rey from the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy.

Entering the cast as a relative unknown, Ridley quickly became a household name and is looking forward to trying her hand at a different kind of acting.

Still, the Westminster-born star can’t seem to separate herself from her character in a galaxy far, far away. When doing an interview about her participation in the thriller “Zoetrope,” Ridley couldn’t help but answer questions about whether or not she will ever reprise her role as Rey in a future installment.

Dropping Hints

In a new interview, Ridley revealed that she was absolutely distraught after filming wrapped for the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy.

“I spent a lot of time crying,” Ridley admitted. “I really felt like I was grieving something. They were my people for so many years! John [Boyega] and I met when we were both twenty-one, we were so young. We started this thing together in our early twenties and now I’m twenty-nine. But we all keep in touch, even though John is the busiest man in the world. I went for breakfast with Kathy Kennedy the other day which was so nice. Jodie [Comer] and I text all the time. It was such a wonderful experience.”

Kathleen Kennedy, 68, is the current President of Lucasfilm. It remains to be seen if her breakfast with Kennedy was just a friendly outing, or a hint that the franchise would like to revisit Rey’s story and see her picking up where Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) left off, and rebuild his Jedi Academy.

Ridley herself has remained non-committal over the years, sometimes hinting that she would love to pick up her lightsaber again, while other times hinting that Rey’s journey is done.

Her most recent comment came in an interview with “Frozen” voice actor Josh Gad in 2020, who was filling in for host Jimmy Kimmel on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” When asked if she would return as Rey in ten years or so, Ridley played coy, saying, “I mean, the world is a crazy place right now. 10 years seems an awfully long way away. I say never say never, but to me ‘Rise of Skywalker’ was tied up with a bow.”

MEGA

Who Is Jodie Comer?

Jodie Comer, 28, played Rey’s mother in a flashback in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”

Only a year younger than Ridley herself, Comer and Ridley did not share any scenes together, as she appeared in a flashback sequence with the child stars who played Rey as a child. Both Josefine Irrera Jackson and Cailey Fleming are credited as playing young Rey. Billy Howle, who appeared in “Dunkirk,” and the TV series, “The Beast Must Die,” is credited as playing Rey’s father.

Comer is best known for her work in “Killing Eve.” She won an Emmy and a BAFTA for her role as Oksana Astankova / Villanelle in the critically acclaimed show. However, she has recently headed back to the big screen and appears opposite Ryan Reynolds in the action-comedy “Free Guy.”

She also stars in “The Last Duel,” which features Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and “Star Wars” co-star Adam Driver, who played Rey’s nemesis, Kylo Ren / Ben Solo, in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy.

“The Last Duel” hit theatres yesterday, October 15, 2021.

Joe Mixon has been a vital part of the Bengals’ offense, ranking third in the NFL in carries (93) and fifth in rushing yards (386) this season. However, he’s questionable to play for their Week 6 matchup against the Lions with an ankle injury.

Head coach Zac Taylor said that Mixon should see a full workload on Sunday, but what happens if he’s ultimately ruled out? We asked two of our analysts how Mixon’s status would impact the outlooks of Samaje Perine and Chris Evans.

Fantasy Impact If Joe Mixon Is Out

Samaje Perine’s Outlook

“Mixon was active last week amid uncertainty in connection to his ankle injury. He split work with Samaje Perine and saw just 18 snaps for 11 touches, 35 scrimmage yards and a touchdown,” noted Samantha Previte.

“It’s a juicy matchup this week against the Lions so if Mixon starts, he’s a top play. If he sits and Perine goes, I would fire up Perine as an RB2.”

Detroit’s defense ranks 21st in yards per carry allowed (4.4) in 2021.

Perine, who’s in his second stint with Cincinnati, registered 59 yards on 11 carries with four catches, 24 yards and one receiving score in Week 5 against the Packers.

Chris Evans’ Outlook

There’s also rookie Chris Evans, who’s been utilized strictly in the passing game this season.

“There are too many variables at play right now with Mixon (ankle) and Perine (COVID),” said Sean Koerner. “All we can do here is wait for news on both. Mixon simply being active doesn’t mean he’s an auto-play if there are concerns about how many touches he can handle, which is why you’ll want to check my updated rankings on Sunday morning.

“The only action item right now is to stash Chris Evans, who would become a RB2/3 option if both Mixon and Perine are ruled out.”

Cincinnati’s a 3.5-point road favorite, with a total of 47.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there any place to hide for the frenemies anymore?

Ofcourse not as by November 2019 only Hiram Garcia disclosed that there were plans in motion to develop Hobbs & Shaw 2, and by March 2020, he made a confirmation that the sequel was on the way, with Chris Morgan, who co-wrote Hobbs & Shaw with Drew Pearce, being brought back to pen the screenplay.

What can we expect from the sequel to the Fast & Furious spin-off?

Following four appearances in the main Fast & Furious film series, Dwayne Johnson carved out his own corner of the car-centric franchise with Jason Statham with 2019’s Hobbs & Shaw.

Hobbs and Shaw 2

The following year, it was confirmed that a sequel is in development, although it sounds like it’ll be a while until it arrives. Now producer Hiram Garcia has provided an update on where exactly Hobbs & Shaw 2 is in the creative process.

While speaking with Collider about the recently-released Jungle Cruise and upcoming projects he and Dwayne Johnson have in development at their production company, Seven Bucks Productions, Hiram Garcia said the following about what’s happening with Hobbs & Shaw 2.

Aren’t you excited to know who’ll be the bad brat this time?

Idris Elba’s Brixton was the main villain of the one and only Hobbs and Shaw, but he eventually answered to a huge baddie called The Director, who heads up Eteon.  The audiences never saw his face and his voice was distorted, while at the end of the movie they teased a history with Hobbs.

What would happen if Brixton was still alive?

Due to Brixton’s conquest, the anonymous director of Eteon chose to trigger the kill-switch embedded within Brixton’s mind. Realizing what had been done, Brixton gravely let out a laugh before falling to his death off the cliff into the rapids below.

By when the sequel expected to release?

As Fast and Furious 9 has been delayed to April 2021, so the another Hobbs and Shaw movie is probably unlikely to happen in 2021 which simply means that we could have to wait until 2022 for a sequel, but maybe we’ll get double the Fast & Furious goodness next year.

Conclusion

Therefore, in the end Brixton is defeated and simultaneously the super-virus that had infected Shaw’s secret agent sister Hattie named Vanessa Kirby and which may or may not have migrated over from Mission Impossible 2 which gets neutralized.

“The Green Knight”

David Lowery’s long-delayed adaptation of the 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was finally released in July to universal acclaim, including a four-star review by yours truly. While interested viewers had to wait forever from its initial release date to finally getting to see it, the wait from theaters to Blu-ray has been much smaller, as it’s already out physical and digital media. A gorgeous rumination on masculinity and courage, Lowery’s dreamlike vision casts Dev Patel as Gawain, a nephew to King Arthur, who sets out on a journey to face his destiny. Captivating in ways that modern American filmmakers are rarely allowed to be these days, this stands among the best films of the year.

“High Sierra” (Criterion)

Movies wouldn’t be the same without Raoul Walsh’s 1941 noir flick about an ex-con on a job gone wrong in the Sierra Nevada. Released early that year, it made Humphrey Bogart a viable star, and we all know what would happen next there. It also proved the skill set of writer John Huston, who would team up with his new star later that same year and make a little movie called “The Maltese Falcon.” All of the ingredients for their future fame and influence are here, including Bogey’s unique blend of irascible charm and Huston’s gift with plotting. There’s more fat on the bone than in their best works, but the Criterion release is a beauty for classic movies fans, and even includes Walsh’s 1949 Western remake of his own material, “Colorado Territory,” in its entirety.
