Mileage can vary, especially since you’re unmistakably playing as the villains of the story, but it’s a solid choice if you’re looking for a modern choice-based adventure game.

If you’re not already familiar with the Vampire tabletop game, Swansong probably isn’t the place to start. It has a decent in-game codex that adds a new entry when you encounter a new word or name, but setting-specific terminology quickly accumulates.

The world is a version of Earth where vampires (or “Kindred”) have controlled human society almost from the beginning. In Vampire, the Illuminati are real, its members are real bloodsuckers, and they have fun constantly screwing each other for power and influence.

Swansong is set in Boston in 2019, where Hazel Iverson has just become the town’s vampiric ruler. She throws a party to cement and celebrate a new diplomatic alliance, but that party is quickly attacked by unidentified assailants. The result is the death or disappearance of nearly three quarters of Boston’s vampires.

You play as Swansong as three of the remaining vampires, whom Hazel employs in a desperate attempt to get to the bottom of things. You rotate between Galeb Bazory, a world-weary former merchant and the town’s oldest surviving vampire; Margaret-Marie “Emem” Louis, who owns a chain of jazz clubs and wants little to do with the other Kindreds; and Leysha, who makes up for her slight madness with her ability to occasionally see the future.

Each character seeks to discover a different piece of the overall puzzle and ultimately decides whether or not to put it together.

Swansong is not putting their best foot forward. It opens with a short sequence set in Hazel’s building, introducing the main characters and many of their personal dramas, long before you’re given a particular reason to care about any of them. It’s like being stuck in a cocktail party where everyone is quietly freaking out.

Worse still, you can’t ignore the dialogue at all on your first playthrough, and there’s a lot of dialogue. This is probably Swansong’s biggest flaw, especially if you replay any section of the game.

Once you advance, Swansong becomes more interesting. In the field, each character is left to explore a particular environment, with a list of objectives that you can usually complete in any particular order.

This can include social challenges, weird puzzles, context clues and, if necessary, drinking down a group of helpless humans like juice boxes. Typically, you explore an area looking for all the interactive objects you can find, then try to determine their relevance, if any, to your current business. It’s pixel-hunting, but reasonably fair, though it’s the only game I’ve played recently where I’d actually want something like detective vision.


When you first play as a character, you have the option to customize their mundane skills to prepare them for quick talk, manipulation, interrogation, or detective work. Each character also has a unique assortment of vampiric abilities, called Disciplines, which give you additional supernatural options.

Along the way, you balance two consumable stats, Willpower and Hunger, which fuel your social abilities and disciplines, respectively. Willpower is hard to track down on the move, while Hunger is actually surprisingly easy to track down, as long as you can find a lone human or rat to munch on. If you stay hungry long enough, eventually you will be forced to feed.

On a first run, you have to carefully balance what you can do against what you can afford to do consistently, which creates ongoing tension. It’s kind of like keeping all the bullets you can in a survival horror game, but here it lasts as long as you can before biting a cop’s throat.

What’s interesting about the way Swansong handles these systems is that it’s not afraid to set you up for failure. In a blind first playthrough, you’re almost guaranteed to encounter a few scenarios you can’t avoid and aren’t prepared for.

This primarily involves social events, called Confrontations: high-stakes arguments where you miss out on something important unless you win. There’s at least one matchup that I don’t even think is possible to win without preparing for it early in the game, despite it being technically optional.

This is an interesting approach to choice-based systems. I don’t think I have a good idea of ​​what options matter and don’t matter in Swansong, and I won’t until I play it again with a notepad in hand, but it’s not a game that’s afraid to make you feel like a complete jerk.

It reminds me of last year’s Gamedec, which has an equally relaxed attitude towards failure; it lets you reach the end regardless, but there’s a big difference between crossing the finish line and staggering across it. Likewise, the fact that you can screw up makes success more enjoyable.

The interesting and subtle horror at work in Swansong is one of my favorite parts of gaming. Typically, when a video game presents itself as a choice-based experience involving morality, you’re offered the opportunity to to be either a pillar of virtue or a little jerk. There may be a little gray area, but it’s usually binary.

Swansong, no matter how you play it, is very good at reinforcing a simple idea: existing in vampire society makes you, at the bare minimum, an accomplice in mass murder. Characters you interrogate will casually admit atrocities, and your character reacts with the equivalent of a shrug. It’s the price to pay for doing business as a Vampire. We eat people here, son. Ghoul at the door should have told you.

It adds a lot overall, especially when you get halfway to Swansong. It’s a more subtle depiction of evil than what you usually get in a video game, where you mostly see the banality surrounding it: the logistics, the paperwork, the immediate consequences. It’s chilling without ever really resorting to splatterpunk.

Swansong was developed by Big Bad Wolf, which is a branch of Cyanide Studios. As such, I wasn’t really expecting this one; Cyanide’s games aren’t usually boring, but their latest tabletop-based project was Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood. Mini-review: I didn’t care, and neither did the others.

Although Swansong shares one of Earthblood’s big flaws – both games drop you straight into the depths of an established setting, making them completely inaccessible to newcomers – it’s a much more solid project. Its horror is subtle, its puzzles are mostly difficult but fair, and its replayability is surprising.

If you don’t mind playing an absolute monster and can handle the slow pace, Swansong is a much better adventure game than I expected. I would play another.

Saints Row promises a series of madnesses bigger than each other. Gunfights, stunts, scenes that go “Always further, stronger, faster… to the end of the extreme limit.” But, because there is a pseudo “but”, this 2022 reboot abandons the giant dildos tapping the faces of passers-by and other miscreants, and rests its feet “a little” on the ground.

Its goal ? Propose an adventure described as absurd and more down to earth by Volition studios. For simplicity, Saints Row relies on a sandbox formula that has proven itself in a wacky open world, but more down to earth than its predecessors. The motto of the studios on this reboot is: “ultimate freedom”.

We must also recognize in Saints Row a certain desire to live with the times, and above all not to look “too much” in the rear view mirror. From a technical point of view, this means the development of a brand new game engine, specially designed for this reboot and designed to exploit the new generation of consoles. I mean of course the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X and S. At first glance, the environments are partially destructible while the vehicles are quick to fly apart. These chain destructions help to make the adventure highly explosive. However, only a grip of The Boss and a hectic ride through the streets of Santo Ileso will allow you to realize the performance of the engine.


The gang

GTA V, the solo and not the online experience, relies on a trio of colorful characters. Saints Row is betting on something more classic with its only protagonist with an evocative name… The Boss. As the leader of the Saints, a newly formed gang, your goal is to take control of Santo Ileso. To do this, you will have to unify the different criminal empires that manage the city in order to see yours emerge. Where the destinies of Michael De Santa, Trevor Philips and Franklin Clinton intersect, collide, those of the members of the Saints dance in rhythm.

Eli – the planner, Neenah – the pilot, Kevin – the gunner, all from the other gangs of the city, and of course The Boss evolve in unison, share everything, even the worst galleys. These close relationships are an integral part of the adventure, and set the tone for the story, which can be summed up simply as “Become your own boss” and “dominate the city of Santo Ileso” by all means. The Saints are looking to unify the gangs, namely the Idols, Los Panteros, and The Marshall, and that’s not going to sit well with everyone.

The rise in power of The Boss and his gang is reflected in the game by a building that alone announces the color. The HQ, or headquarters of the Saints, is the place of all possibilities, or almost, and allows members to “chiller” between two missions. It is, so to speak, the head of a criminal empire in the making. Beyond the personalization of the places according to your tastes in terms of interior decoration, it is possible to buy weapons, improvements for them, to equip yourself, to change your style – we will come back to this point in due time – and to get hold of several businesses across the city. Simply put, these are legitimate shell companies that help establish the domination of the Saints.

Who says gang, says multiplayer and especially cooperation! Saints Row 2022 is fully two-player and cross-play. It should be understood here that PC, PlayStation 5 and/or Xbox Series X/S players can join a common game and collaborate for the duration of a mission and even during the entire adventure. No prerequisites are necessary to land in a game, provided that the host accepts your presence. Everything is supposed to happen naturally.

The style

Winning in Santo Ileso is done by force, but also by style, and in this area, Saints Row sees things big. GTA V, when it comes to single-player, is chained to its three “heroes.” Here, The Boss is in your image, or not for that matter. Volition studios have developed a character editor steeped in options and with almost infinite possibilities. Understand one thing, if you want to create an albino vampire, a skinny bodybuilder, the king of bofs, a space cowboy, a neon gothic fashion, or even a mix of all that and much more, you will be served… en masse.

Everything is customizable on The Boss. It starts with height, weight, morphology, face, skin, eyes, hair, teeth, prostheses and of course sex, which can be defined or not. Gender is not enforced in Saints Row. If you want to let the visual do the talking and play the suspense card, that’s entirely possible. The style also goes through the undermining and once again, Saints Row borders on indigestion with hundreds of clothes and accessories, tattoos and other items to unlock in order to perfect your virtual ME. The ultimate freedom promised by Volition and Deep Silver is even found in the creation and customization of The Boss.

The leader of the Saints gang cannot decently walk the streets of Santo Ileso. After the undermining comes the pulling, and the garage has nothing to envy to that of the great hours of a certain Need for Speed. The title has no less than 80 basic vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, boats, jet skis, assault helicopters, yes assault, etc. You might argue that GTA V and GTA Online have a bewildering number of cars. We are talking about more than 600 cars available in the online version. Saints Row replica with several presets. These are alternate versions of the different vehicles available with their own unique abilities and behaviors.

Now is the time to let your creativity speak by modifying the purchased crates as you see fit. Everything is customizable, or almost, on the models in order to create cars in the image of the Saints. Beyond the aesthetic aspect, some modifiers impact the gameplay. The Signature Abilities, ideal for outsmarting the police or your pursuers, differ from each other, and allow you to adapt each vehicle to your style of play. There is no question of letting a racing beast gather dust in the garage .

The mere presence of The Boss in the “street” is not always enough to make the gangs of Santo Ileso abdicate. It is therefore necessary to use the hard way to be understood and obtain a surrender in good and due form. Nothing to say about the fights in GTA V, they are effective, often intense, even if the weight of the years can actually be felt. As a reminder, the game was released for the first time in 2013! Saints Row plays the uninhibited nonsense card, and above all nervous to the last degree. If firearms are synonymous with life or death, the melee is not left out, and knows how to be useful in the middle of the fray. There are even Signature Moves dedicated to the art of savate!

No bigotry here though. Volition mixes gunfight and kick and fight within a 100% arcade gameplay made of dodging, cover, firefights and explosions of all kinds. The developers make it a point of honor to provide The Boss and the members of the Saints gang with the best in blasters. Aficionados of gunpowder will be able to have a field day. SMGs, pistols, assault rifles, grenade launchers, sniper rifles, etc. Of course, each weapon is fully customizable, and these modifications are not just cosmetic.

The Boss even has specific abilities and attributes, skills and perks, which will be essential in getting rid of the pesky peskys and surviving the war that is looming on the horizon. This “arsenal” will not be too much to overcome the three gangs that control Santo Ileso. The Idols, Los Panteros and The Marshall, not to mention the forces of order, represent a major challenge for The Saints and a rich bestiary made up of various and varied troops, but also mini-bosses. Something to let off steam as it should be!

The fun

This is not the time for realism with Saints Row. It’s fun time! It’s hard to quantify, or even define, “fun” in a video game. This results in high-flying gameplay sequences, Over the Top moments worthy of 80s action cinema from which emerges a strong smell of testosterone and frank camaraderie. Saints Row promises a series of madnesses bigger than each other. Gunfights, stunts, scenes that go “Always further, stronger, faster… to the end of the extreme limit.” But, because there is a pseudo “but”, this 2022 reboot abandons the giant dildos tapping the faces of passers-by and other miscreants, and rests its feet “a little” on the ground.

Its goal ? Propose an adventure described as absurd and more down to earth by Volition studios. Saints Row remains in a totally uninhibited universe that assumes everything and its opposite, but the time has come to de-escalate without denying the very essence of the franchise. Want an explosive pinata launcher, or an El Mariachi machine gun to slay your enemies? No problem. You want a Wingsuit to jump from a helicopter in flames with the possibility of bouncing on onlookers below to regain height. Nothing’s easier. The logic in all this? None, it’s Saints Row.

    Ce petit article a toute sa place je pense dans la rubrique Le coin du vieux con, car je suis venu y faire l’éloge du jeu au tour par tour. Le format tour par tour, que ce soit dans les jeux de stratégie ou dans les RPG, est en train de disparaître progressivement au profit du système dit en temps réel. Et autant le dire tout de suite, cela ne me plait pas du tout, mais alors pas du tout.

    La stratégie, c’est du tour par tour

    Historiquement, les grands jeux de stratégie ont toujours été au tour par tour. C’est de cette manière que le joueur pose de véritables réflexions, qui nécessitent du recul et une vision claire du jeu. Les ténors du genre, on les connait tous : les échecs bien sûr, le jeu de dames, le backgammon, autant de jeux qui font appel au tour par tour et qui demandent une mise en place tactique et stratégique d’un jeu qui se réinvente à chaque partie, et dont les possibilités infinies le rende intemporel.

    Les échecs, l’aboutissement absolu du jeu de stratégie, a servi de modèles à l’élaboration de quantités industrielles d’autres jeux. Ne doutez pas un instant qu’une série comme celle des Heroes of might and magic s’en inspire fortement, et en revendique l’affiliation.

    Ces jeux ont servi de référence lors de la création d’autre jeux, comme les wargames par exemple. Aujourd’hui encore, les wargames qui sortent sur PC sont bien évidemment au tour par tour, comme on le voit chez le plus grand développeur de wargames actuellement, Paradox Interactive, avec ses titres Victoria, Hearts of Iron ou Europa Universalis.

    Victoria II a beau être récent, il n’en demeure pas moins fidèle dans sa structure aux fondements du jeu de stratégie au tour par tour, avec ses cases, ses pions, son organisation et sa visée tactique très avancée.

    Les jeux vidéos ont donc naturellement proposé de nombreux jeux ayant adopté un système au tour par tour, et ce fut notamment le cas des rpg ou des tactical-rpg, ces derniers lorgnant très clairement du côté des échecs avec leur représentation en plateau qui n’est pas sans rappeler le damier (déplacement des personnages par case, comme dans un jeu d’échecs).

    Oui, mais voilà, il faut bien constater une chose : le tour par tour est en train de disparaître. Penchons-nous sur ce qui est pour moi un meurtre ludique.

    Hésitations et glissement progressif vers le temps réel

    La date de 1993 est importante car elle voit le développement de Dune II par les studios Westwood. Avec ce titre mythique, aux qualités d’ailleurs indéniables, le développeur invente purement et simplement le STR moderne. Blizzard s’engouffrera dans la brèche deux ans plus tard, en 1995, avec le tout premier Warcraft, et il faudra attendre 1998 pour le premier Starcraft. C’est dans cette même période, en 95, que les Command and Conquer vont faire leur apparition. Cette nouvelle façon d’envisager le jeu de stratégie fait recette, et fonctionne à merveille. Même si j’ai placé cet article dans “Le coin du vieux con” et que je suis un farouche défenseur du tour par tour, je suis bien obligé malgré tout de reconnaître les qualités du temps réel (d’ailleurs, on peut se demander si cela aurait aussi bien marché si ce type de jeu ne disposait pas de qualités fortes) : richesse de l’univers et du système de jeu, ouverture au multijoueur rendue plus facile par la rapidité et la nervosité des parties, développement d’un pro-gaming spectaculaire et intéressant dû à la maîtrise que demandent ces jeux exigents. Bref, les arguments sont nombreux et son indiscutables.

    Dune II est quasiment l’inventeur du genre STR, consacrant son développeur Westwood comme un studio visionnaire et vraiment en avance sur son temps.

    Le problème, c’est que cet engouement va bien évidemment se faire au détriment des autres formes de jeux, et c’est ainsi que l’on va voir fleurir des jeux de stratégie en temps réel dans tous les sens, les développeurs semblant oublier assez rapidement qu’un jeu de stratégie au tour par tour dispose lui aussi de qualités énormes. C’est bien simple, les licences exploitant un système au tour par tour vont se réduire comme peau de chagrin, et se limiter à quelques noms célèbres qui se vendent toujours bien : les Civilization bien sûr (et encore, la fameuse licence de Sid Meier a connu un sacré passage à vide avant de se ressaisir brillamment avec l’épisode IV), la saga des Heroes of might and magic, ainsi que quelques illuminés comme les Europa Universalis, classés désormais parmi les jeux de niche, qui ne concernent plus qu’une frange réduite de la population des joueurs.
    De grosses désillusions vont se produire pendant cette explosion du STR. On verra ainsi une licence aussi respectée que Master of Orion voler en éclats avec Master of Orion III, Galactic Civilzation II reprendra le flambeau quelque peu, mais là aussi sous la forme de jeu de niche. Bref, tout se passe subitement comme si plus personne ne voulait entendre parler de stratégie au tour par tour ! C’est dans cette période également que sortiront des jeux mal aimés comme Civilization 3 ou Heroes of might and magic 4, qui sont fortement critiqués et qui ne parviennent pas à éblouir comme ils le faisaient autrefois.
    Et même les jeux dits 4X, qui imposent souvent par leur nature de jeux de gestion/exploration/expansion/combat un système au tour par tour, vont se lancer dans le temps réel, parfois d’ailleurs avec une réelle réussite, comme ce fut le cas pour Sins of a solar empire.

    Triste époque pour un joueur comme moi que cette époque où des licences aussi prestigieuses que Civilization ou HOMM végètent et peinent à trouver leur public, là où certains épisodes très discutables de Command and Conquer cartonnent et font les beaux jours de leurs éditeurs...

    Les raisons de l’engouement

    Je n’ai pas la réponse à cette question, je ne peux que formuler des hypothèses, afin de comprendre pourquoi le STR a triomphé à ce point, au détriment du tour par tour. Je suis d’ailleurs à l’écoute de toutes vos idées à ce sujet. Je pense malgré tout que le tour par tour est fortement pénalisé par la lenteur certaine des parties qui sont mises en place.
    Lancez-vous dans un Heroes of might and magic en ligne. Pour peu que vous preniez une carte assez grande, on peut alors se retrouver avec une partie qui dure plusieurs jours, sur laquelle il faut revenir, avec tous les problèmes de disponibilité des joueurs que cela implique, si on veut avoir une chance de la finir. Je pense que là est le fond du problème. Quand on sait qu’une partie de Starcraft en ligne dure en moyenne 10 mn, la différence fait mal en termes d’accessibilité et d’efficacité, elle fait mal aussi en termes de stratégie, mais j’y reviendrai.

    En fait, peut-être que ce qui a destabilisé le marché et entraîné la chute des jeux de stratégie au tour par tour, c’est l’avénement du multijoueur. La révolution, la vraie, elle est bien là. Un jeu qui sort aujourd’hui sans dimension multijoueur est un jeu fortement handicapé, car internet est passé par là, et les joueurs veulent désormais jouer ensemble via la toile. Le format du tour par tour, il faut le reconnaître, est assez mal adapté au jeu online.

    Et pourtant, j’affirme haut et fort qu’en termes de stratégie pure, ces formats de parties rapides mettent un sacré coup dans l’aile au développement tactique du joueur. Franchement, le battle.net de Starcraft II commence à me gonfler. Avez-vous à quoi ressemblent 90% des parties ? Des joueurs-robots sous emphétamines usant de la même stratégie éclair et sans génie pour envahir votre base dès les premières minutes de jeu et vous anéantir directement. Rideau. Ecran des scores. Supeeeeeeeeeeeer. Alors je sais, vous pouvez toujours me dire : “Mon gars, on n’y peut rien si tu es un gros manchot incapable de se défendre dans un jeu comme celui là”. Seulement, voilà, j’ai quand même quelques heures de vol en termes de jeux vidéos et je ne pense pas être complètement crétin, alors s’il s’avère que le seul moyen de briller à Starcraft 2, c’est de devenir une sorte de poulpe à douze bras s’entraînant 30 heures par jour pour espérer décrocher une victoire, eh bien ce sera sans moi, tout simplement.

    Bien souvent, vous n’aurez pas le loisir de développer votre base davantage !! Stacraft 2 : bienvenus dans l’antithèse de la stratégie.

    Peut-on vraiment considérer qu’un bon stratège est avant tout un type ultra speed dont l’essentiel du talent repose dans les doigts et les raccourcis clavier ? C’est bizarre, mais pour moi, ce sont là les qualités requises pour un bon joueur de Counter Strike ! Cette dérive nerveuse représente à mes yeux la négation même de la stratégie, ou plutôt, une réduction de la stratégie à un seul format : le blietzkrieg, la fameuse guerre-éclair mise au point par les Allemands en 39-45.

    De ce point de vue, je trouve les jeux de Relic basés sur la licence Warhammer 40000 ou sur cette fameuse seconde guerre mondiale dans Company of Heroes bien plus intéressante, car le rythme des parties, la formation des troupes par escouade, le principe des points de contrôle, etc., tout en restant assez speed et sepctaculaire, amène une stratégie un brin plus affutée quand même.
    Le STR peut donc paraître bien fun, mais à mon sens, il a souvent tendance à appauvrir considérablement l’aspect stratégique des choses. Les véritables belles parties de Stacraft, avec des revirements, beaucoup d’unités, des décisions capitales, restent relativement rares, même si j’en ai déjà faites moi-même, évidemment.

    Les rpg ont malheureusement tendance à suivre ce mouvement. Sur les nouvelles générations de consoles, les rpg japonais proposent de plus en plus des gameplay en temps réel, au détriment du tour par tour qui se fait rare.

    Lost Odyssey, un des rares jrpg current-gen à assumer sans honte un authentique système de jeu au tour par tour, extrêmement classique dans son exécution.

    Là aussi, il y a eu une hésitation à une époque, déjà perceptible à travers le système ATB développé par Square à la grande époque, avant qu’une bascule se produise pour nous faire glisser vers le temps réel. Il faut tout de même rappeler que 90% des grands rpg de l’ère PS1 et PS2 étaient au tour par tour, et qu’aujourd’hui encore, nombreux sont les joueurs qui regrettent amèrement cette époque et les jeux qui l’ont marquée.

    FFXIII, The Last Hope, Vesperia, autant de rpg current-gen qui adoptent tous des sytèmes de combat hyper nerveux, qui se déroulent soit en temps réel intégral soit en simili temps réel. Toujours est-il qu’il n’y a qu’un seul mot d’ordre : speed, spped, toujours plus speed.

    Nous avons heureusement des exceptions bienvenues, car le genre du rpg se prête tout de même plutôt bien au tour par tour, il n’empêche que cela devient de plus en plus rare tout de même, là où c’était autrefois une évidence.

    A noter qu’il en va de même pour les rpg occidentaux. Le meilleur exemple reste probablement Fallout, où on a vu l’épisode 3 se débarrasser du système de jeu des deux premiers épidodes légendaires en transformant un gameplay très tactique à base de points d’action en un jeu de shoot sanguinaire lorgnant fortement du côté du FPS à grand spectacle. Heureusement, Bioware garde un certain attachement au tour par tour et nous propose souvent, comme dans Dragon Age Origins, le système de pause active si apprécié dans le formidable Baldur’s gate. Il faut d’ailleurs noter que l’ensemble des joueurs a adoré ce système de combat et ce principe de pause active. Voilà qui devrait faire réfléchir un peu les développeurs.

    Avec son sytème de pause active, Bioware a montré que le tour par tour pouvait être dynamique et spectaculaire, sans rien sacrifier à la dimension stratégique des combats.

    Franchement, ce délaissement du tour par tour, j’y vois clairement un manque de patience de la nouvelle génération de joueurs, qui veut consommer du jeu toujours plus speed, toujours plus spectaculaire, sans vraiment prendre le temps de réfléchir à ce qu’on va faire. Cette phrase ne plaira pas, j’en suis conscient, mais il y a des moments où cela m’agace. On ne peut pas faire de généralités, heureusement, et il y aura toujours de jeunes joueurs comme notre cher Koroko et son amour immodéré pour la série des Persona pour défendre ce type de jeu, et ce type de gameplay, mais la tendance va très nettement du côté du jeu d’action pure, bien bourrin et peu réfléchi. Je ne dis pas que ce type de jeu soit à brûler, il y en a de très bons, mais faut-il simplement que TOUS les genres de jeux suivent cette tendance ?

    C’est aux développeurs de veiller à tout cela, et de nous pondre des systèmes de jeu sans doute hybrides qui puissent concilier les deux aspects. J’ai déjà parlé de la pause active chère à Bioware, mais il y a encore beaucoup d’autres choses à imaginer. La toute récente série des Valkyria Chronicles nous le montre avec brio. Le gameplay repose à la fois sur du tour par tour, et sur une vue à la troisième personne pendant les phases d’action, penant lesquelles on va jusqu’à viser avant de tirer. Sega a accompli l’exploit de renouveler le genre très rigide du tactical-rpg, en le dynamisant sans rien lui faire perdre de l’intérêt stratégique.

    Tour par tour et action mélangés. Valkyria Chronicles est là pour nous montrer la voie et prouver à tous les détracteurs du tour par tour que ce système de jeu peut-être tout à la fois dynamique et spectaculaire…si on s’en donne la peine...

    Je me rappelle avoir eu une discussion avec un joueur qui me disait : dans la vrai vie, en temps de guerre, on est bien en temps réel, on attend pas que l’autre ait terminé son tour. Je m’étais alors efforcé de lui montrer que c’est une perception des choses très fausse, car enfin, les actions militaires ont toujours été préparées avec soin, avec des délais avant de passer à l’action, avec des tactiques élaborées par des gens qui étaient parfois de véritables génies. On a rarement demandé à des troupes de préparer des baraquements en moins de cinq minutes sous peine d’être envahi par un rush de l’armée ennemie…

    Cet article était un cri d’amour en faveur des jeux au tour par tour. J’espère sincèrement qu’une longue vie les attend, et que cette course frénétique à la vitesse irréfléchie ne fera pas force de loi pour tous les jeux dans les années à venir.     Historiquement, les grands jeux de stratégie ont toujours été au tour par tour. C’est de cette manière que le joueur pose de véritables réflexions, qui nécessitent du recul et une vision claire du jeu. Les ténors du genre, on les connait tous : les échecs bien sûr, le jeu de dames, le backgammon, autant de jeux qui font appel au tour par tour et qui demandent une mise en place tactique et stratégique d’un jeu qui se réinvente à chaque partie, et dont les possibilités infinies le rende intemporel.

    Les échecs, l’aboutissement absolu du jeu de stratégie, a servi de modèles à l’élaboration de quantités industrielles d’autres jeux. Ne doutez pas un instant qu’une série comme celle des Heroes of might and magic s’en inspire fortement, et en revendique l’affiliation.

    Ces jeux ont servi de référence lors de la création d’autre jeux, comme les wargames par exemple. Aujourd’hui encore, les wargames qui sortent sur PC sont bien évidemment au tour par tour, comme on le voit chez le plus grand développeur de wargames actuellement, Paradox Interactive, avec ses titres Victoria, Hearts of Iron ou Europa Universalis.

    Victoria II a beau être récent, il n’en demeure pas moins fidèle dans sa structure aux fondements du jeu de stratégie au tour par tour, avec ses cases, ses pions, son organisation et sa visée tactique très avancée.

    Les jeux vidéos ont donc naturellement proposé de nombreux jeux ayant adopté un système au tour par tour, et ce fut notamment le cas des rpg ou des tactical-rpg, ces derniers lorgnant très clairement du côté des échecs avec leur représentation en plateau qui n’est pas sans rappeler le damier (déplacement des personnages par case, comme dans un jeu d’échecs).

    Oui, mais voilà, il faut bien constater une chose : le tour par tour est en train de disparaître. Penchons-nous sur ce qui est pour moi un meurtre ludique.

    La date de 1993 est importante car elle voit le développement de Dune II par les studios Westwood. Avec ce titre mythique, aux qualités d’ailleurs indéniables, le développeur invente purement et simplement le STR moderne. Blizzard s’engouffrera dans la brèche deux ans plus tard, en 1995, avec le tout premier Warcraft, et il faudra attendre 1998 pour le premier Starcraft. C’est dans cette même période, en 95, que les Command and Conquer vont faire leur apparition. Cette nouvelle façon d’envisager le jeu de stratégie fait recette, et fonctionne à merveille. Même si j’ai placé cet article dans “Le coin du vieux con” et que je suis un farouche défenseur du tour par tour, je suis bien obligé malgré tout de reconnaître les qualités du temps réel (d’ailleurs, on peut se demander si cela aurait aussi bien marché si ce type de jeu ne disposait pas de qualités fortes) : richesse de l’univers et du système de jeu, ouverture au multijoueur rendue plus facile par la rapidité et la nervosité des parties, développement d’un pro-gaming spectaculaire et intéressant dû à la maîtrise que demandent ces jeux exigents. Bref, les arguments sont nombreux et son indiscutables.

    Dune II est quasiment l’inventeur du genre STR, consacrant son développeur Westwood comme un studio visionnaire et vraiment en avance sur son temps.

    Le problème, c’est que cet engouement va bien évidemment se faire au détriment des autres formes de jeux, et c’est ainsi que l’on va voir fleurir des jeux de stratégie en temps réel dans tous les sens, les développeurs semblant oublier assez rapidement qu’un jeu de stratégie au tour par tour dispose lui aussi de qualités énormes. C’est bien simple, les licences exploitant un système au tour par tour vont se réduire comme peau de chagrin, et se limiter à quelques noms célèbres qui se vendent toujours bien : les Civilization bien sûr (et encore, la fameuse licence de Sid Meier a connu un sacré passage à vide avant de se ressaisir brillamment avec l’épisode IV), la saga des Heroes of might and magic, ainsi que quelques illuminés comme les Europa Universalis, classés désormais parmi les jeux de niche, qui ne concernent plus qu’une frange réduite de la population des joueurs.
    De grosses désillusions vont se produire pendant cette explosion du STR. On verra ainsi une licence aussi respectée que Master of Orion voler en éclats avec Master of Orion III, Galactic Civilzation II reprendra le flambeau quelque peu, mais là aussi sous la forme de jeu de niche. Bref, tout se passe subitement comme si plus personne ne voulait entendre parler de stratégie au tour par tour ! C’est dans cette période également que sortiront des jeux mal aimés comme Civilization 3 ou Heroes of might and magic 4, qui sont fortement critiqués et qui ne parviennent pas à éblouir comme ils le faisaient autrefois.
    Et même les jeux dits 4X, qui imposent souvent par leur nature de jeux de gestion/exploration/expansion/combat un système au tour par tour, vont se lancer dans le temps réel, parfois d’ailleurs avec une réelle réussite, comme ce fut le cas pour Sins of a solar empire.

    Triste époque pour un joueur comme moi que cette époque où des licences aussi prestigieuses que Civilization ou HOMM végètent et peinent à trouver leur public, là où certains épisodes très discutables de Command and Conquer cartonnent et font les beaux jours de leurs éditeurs...

    Les raisons de l’engouement

    Je n’ai pas la réponse à cette question, je ne peux que formuler des hypothèses, afin de comprendre pourquoi le STR a triomphé à ce point, au détriment du tour par tour. Je suis d’ailleurs à l’écoute de toutes vos idées à ce sujet. Je pense malgré tout que le tour par tour est fortement pénalisé par la lenteur certaine des parties qui sont mises en place.
    Lancez-vous dans un Heroes of might and magic en ligne. Pour peu que vous preniez une carte assez grande, on peut alors se retrouver avec une partie qui dure plusieurs jours, sur laquelle il faut revenir, avec tous les problèmes de disponibilité des joueurs que cela implique, si on veut avoir une chance de la finir. Je pense que là est le fond du problème. Quand on sait qu’une partie de Starcraft en ligne dure en moyenne 10 mn, la différence fait mal en termes d’accessibilité et d’efficacité, elle fait mal aussi en termes de stratégie, mais j’y reviendrai.

    En fait, peut-être que ce qui a destabilisé le marché et entraîné la chute des jeux de stratégie au tour par tour, c’est l’avénement du multijoueur. La révolution, la vraie, elle est bien là. Un jeu qui sort aujourd’hui sans dimension multijoueur est un jeu fortement handicapé, car internet est passé par là, et les joueurs veulent désormais jouer ensemble via la toile. Le format du tour par tour, il faut le reconnaître, est assez mal adapté au jeu online.

    Et pourtant, j’affirme haut et fort qu’en termes de stratégie pure, ces formats de parties rapides mettent un sacré coup dans l’aile au développement tactique du joueur. Franchement, le battle.net de Starcraft II commence à me gonfler. Avez-vous à quoi ressemblent 90% des parties ? Des joueurs-robots sous emphétamines usant de la même stratégie éclair et sans génie pour envahir votre base dès les premières minutes de jeu et vous anéantir directement. Rideau. Ecran des scores. Supeeeeeeeeeeeer. Alors je sais, vous pouvez toujours me dire : “Mon gars, on n’y peut rien si tu es un gros manchot incapable de se défendre dans un jeu comme celui là”. Seulement, voilà, j’ai quand même quelques heures de vol en termes de jeux vidéos et je ne pense pas être complètement crétin, alors s’il s’avère que le seul moyen de briller à Starcraft 2, c’est de devenir une sorte de poulpe à douze bras s’entraînant 30 heures par jour pour espérer décrocher une victoire, eh bien ce sera sans moi, tout simplement.

    Bien souvent, vous n’aurez pas le loisir de développer votre base davantage !! Stacraft 2 : bienvenus dans l’antithèse de la stratégie.

The evolution compared to its predecessor is therefore very palpable, especially for the bestiary benefiting from an even more careful rendering, very shimmering shades of colors and the visual effects (magics, etc.) very well done, all this accentuating with brilliantly this cartoon aspect.     If you follow us regularly, you know that this is not the first time that we put the Cellar Door Games studio at the center of attention. This was the case for our reviews of the first Rogue Legacy, as well as that of the action game Full Metal Furies, both on Nintendo Switch.

    Going back to Rogue Legacy 2, the software was subject to Early Access from its announcement in August 2020, until its release at the end of April.

    The adventure, like its elder, is again placed under the sign of heroism, of cryptic universe with many logs to collect (and even information to discover after having finished the game). And of course a humorous dose, whether by the traits of descendants or by the writings.

    The return of the long line

    The story takes us once again to the heart of the Middle Ages. Without any spoiler, we find ourselves in control of a whole great lineage, ancestors as heirs.

    With each new generation, these “warriors” continue the quest for their ancestors, that is to say, they go to the neighboring castle with the aim of unlocking all its secrets, elucidating the mysteries , defeat beasts and gather the Estuaries in order to open golden doors but also rebuild their building.
