Baltic Mild killed my pressure barrel

My trusty Boots pressure barrel (actually on loan from a friend) split last night trying to contain the primeval forces unleashed by Arbor Ales yeasts working on my latest brew - a version of Baltic Mild. The pressure relief valve on the lid evidently failed. This failure is also despite a daily manual releasing of pressure. I decanted to a cornelius keg - these can withstand 100 psi so should be OK...

I Found The Shut-off Valve

I would have shot this regardless of current political and economic conditions.However, at present it seems to have a bit more substance as a forbidding omen.

I don't mind at all pointing the finger. BP and all the other companies need to have plans and equipment in place for this kind of a disaster. Keep in mind this is not the first time this has happened. The fisheries may not recover for 100 years if not longer.

Sure we love our SUV's and saving 10 cents at Walmart, but we as Americans need to make a decision as a country not to continue to waste natural resources in the manner we have done in the past 200 years.

Think of this. Over the past 30 years the auto industry has converted the majority of sales into 24 or 36 month leases. That means every 2 to 3 years every car on the road is replaced. Where are all those cars going? It's a world wide epidemic which is tearing our cities apart. Not just here in the U.S. but across the planet. More and more cities are designed around the automobile and not designed for people. That for me is a problem. A big problem.

By all means lets keep the heat on BP. In spite of everyone bashing them and Monday morning quarterbacking, it seems they are trying to take this thing down and fix it. I saw an estimate last night that they have 24 billion dollars in stock losses over the past XX days. Anyone who thinks they are dragging their feet with those kind of losses is a nut job.

Also, I think someone other than John Stewart needs to bash the media. They have been playing this story like Charlie Daniels plays the fiddle. For the last 5 weeks they have been screaming that the oil will be on Florida's shores in the "next several days". For fuck sake, we have lost millions of tourist dollars in that time from canceled vacation and all they have seen so far is a couple of tar balls!

Anyhow, I have ranted enough. We are all responsible for what happened in the Gulf. Think about it the next time you hop in your car to drive to the Quicky-Mart for an ice cold Squishy.

The contrast in colors are quite alarming!

The valves are making noise on this truck. In the past you would clearly need a valve clearance adjustment. However, this engine is equiped with hydraulic valve lifters which require no adjustment and zero clearance. Somehow there is noise coming from the rocker cover assembly and something needs to be fixed in here. I did the easiest part: removing the cover, but finding out where to proceed from here will be a little tricky.

Infinite Air Duster!

This is my air duster. I don't like the nasty hydrocarbons they use in the normal product and didn't want to buy another disposable can, so I made this.

I drilled a hole in the top (1/8", with my dremel). NOTE: This goes directly AGAINST the WARNINGS on the label. I am not suggesting anyone try this. However, I drilled gently, used cutting oil and nothing bad happened. I also made sure that the can was empty (rubber banding the trigger open and leaving it for a long time works well).

The valve is just a schrader valve off of a dead bicycle tube--thus making it compatible with about any floor pump.

The valve is glued down, and lashed on with black hemp twine. The twine was then inundated with 2-ton 2-part epoxy to make a sturdy composite material. It's pretty burly.

When pumped up, the can gets noticeably warm (yay, Ideal Gas Law!), and should be used immediately. Otherwise, the high pressure air cools back to room temp, and comes out as really cold air. This leads to condensation problems. For similar reasons, I don't leave it charged.

EDIT: Read baitisj's comment below. I didn't make an instructable out of this because it is NOT safe. It is a pressure bomb waiting to explode. I built it because I have a good idea what the failure modes are, and think I'm immortal. There are plenty of dumb ideas on der intertron, this might be one of them.

All back together, except for the coil pack plugs. Before attempting to start do the following.
Rotate the engine over by hand to ensure all OK. There will be pressure from the compression stroke, but it should rotate freely. If you hear anything like metal on metal, stop. If it suddenly stops and will not turn, back up see if it stops at the same place each time. This is just a check to make sure nothing is seriously wrong.
Go for the key and turn it over a few times on the starter. This repeats the process above, but at a higher speed. It also primes the oil pump and starts to prime the lifters.

This is not a replacement for doing a proper Piston To Valve ( PTV ) clearance check. However if you are using a known cam shaft grind in a known engine, then a proper check is not really needed. If you are using a custom grind shaft with vastly different timing, or you have gone for a cam with lobes that rival Pamela Anderson's chest, or you have shaved heaps off the heads for more compression, do the PTV checks.
