Can You Repair A Plasma Tv

can you repair a plasma tv

    plasma tv
  • A plasma display panel (PDP) is a type of flat panel display common to large TV displays (80 cm or larger). They are called "plasma" displays because the pixels rely on plasma cells, or what are in essence chambers more commonly known as fluorescent lamps.

  • (Plasma TVs) Plasma TVs uses tiny tubes of gas for each pixel displayed, and electricity makes each of the pixels glow. Plasma TVs will create deeper blacks and at times much brighter colors than LCD TVs, as well as having better contrast.

  • Images are produced by xenon and neon gas contained in hundreds of thousands of tiny cells positioned between two plates of glass.

Trancel 6TP-243

Trancel 6TP-243

Just returned from the Michigan Antique Radio Club's annual "Extravaganza" radio meet (July 7, 2011)
I always come home with one or two great finds. I was happy to find this Trancel in a box of "parts" radios. It was in need of a good clean up and was missing the bottom badge. Well, turns out I had a spare badge and the clean up was easy. Other than a chip on the upper right corner (which I will repair) I'd say I did pretty well for $20

These Trancel radios were made by Toshiba and came in many variations under the Toshiba, Trancel, Pennys and Gibraltar brand names. An early radio too, dates from 1958-59.
I believe these may have been the first Toshiba-made radios to be imported into the U.S.A.

This radio design is one of my favorites. Simple, balanced and timeless. 52 years later it still looks great. Many transistor radios of this era are "time stamped" with obvious signs of space age/machine age motifs. This model doesn't scream 1950's like its contemporaries.

I found this great 95 page radio catalogue in a local antique store. It's full of great information related to the parts for repairing tube radios. I bought it mainly because of the ads inside showing the year's line-up of Stark Electronics testing equipment.

The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse

I was down at mum's house last Sunday, It was a lovely warm sunny day and so we were out in the garden enjoying the fine weather. Wandering around the garden, looking at the flowers and unkempt plant beds, I found myself at the bottom garden staring into the dilapidated greenhouse that hides in an overgrown and inaccessible corner. Now rotten and slowly falling in on itself, this was once a proud and substantial structure made of wood, reinforced concrete, and heavy plate glass panels. It had originally been erected at about the time the house was built in the mid 1930s. My father had used it to grow plants in, from when he and my mother first moved into the property in 1954, up until the mid ‘70s when he got tired of repairing it, later superseding it with a modern aluminium affair.

It was strange because as I stood there, I could still see in my mind's eye the neat lines of large terracotta plant pots stood on the earthen floor, and me standing inside as a child looking up at the tall thin upright bamboo canes bending under the weight of loaded tomato vines. At times, the greenhouse was bursting with tomatoes - oh, the pungent smell of tomato plants filling the air and the stifling heat under its glass roof. In the summer months I used to take my toys out of the house and play with them down the bottom of the garden; I’d be playing down there for hours-on-end. During sudden summer rainstorms, I’d sometimes shelter inside the old greenhouse; as a child it was a thrilling adventure being out in an electric storm, the rain beating down on the glass roof, accompanied by the occasional clap of thunder. Mind you, the greenhouse leaked in quite badly during heavy downpours, but I knew where to stand to avoid the majority of incoming water, and of course the plants didn’t mind getting soaked. I knew that there were some big spiders in its darkened corners, and I used to try and put the thought of them out of my mind, or else I would have bolted out of there into the rain.

Because of the fallen branches, leaves and debris, much of what remains in the greenhouse is now buried, but I bet dad’s old paraffin heater is still at the back underneath it all. As the dark nights closed in, dad would get the paraffin heater ready for the colder months ahead. Carrying the empty tin can, I sometimes used to go with him to buy paraffin from the local petrol station. There used to be a really old fashioned pump at the side of the garage from where paraffin was dispensed. A middle-aged man with dark, greased-down hair, and wearing one of those brown coat overalls often used to serve us, always polite and referring to dad as ‘sir’; you’d never get service like that today. Once back in the greenhouse, dad would fill the heater’s tank with paraffin, but lighting it always seemed such a complicated affair; taking off the tall funnel, adjusting the wick, sliding something or other around, and then reassembling it lit. It used to have an acetate type window in the side of the funnel, through which you could see the flame flickering inside, something that seemed quite magical in the fading daylight. Dad would carefully close the greenhouse door, and we'd walk back up the garden path to the house…

Then I can hear mum calling me, and my concentration is lost. As I walk back up the garden, I think what wonderful and poignant memories had been stirred, but how sad that the decrepit remains of the old greenhouse also mark the passing of so many years, and of the time that has passed since my dear dad passed away, I wonder what he would think if he could see it now?

14th June 2009.

Bovington Tank Museum - Peerless Armoured Car

Bovington Tank Museum - Peerless Armoured Car

In 1919 the British Army found itself short of armoured cars when many were needed quickly to police various trouble spots around the world. Few manufacturers wanted to do war work at the time but the Austin Motor Company of Birmingham agreed to provide armoured bodies if the War Office could come up with suitable chassis.

Austin had made armoured cars during the war, mostly for the Imperial Russian Government which favoured a twin turret design. Some of these cars later served with the Tank Corps. The best chassis that the War Office could come up with was the Peerless, of which stocks were available. The Peerless was a robust, chain-drive chassis manufactured in Cleveland, Ohio which had been used in large numbers as lorries by the British Army during the war. In fact the chassis was too long for the Austin body, leaving a good deal sticking out at the back.

In reality it did not make a very good armoured car. It was too big, too unwieldy and slow while the crew got a rough ride on solid tyres. However it was durable and quite a few were still in service when the Second World War began. Peerless armoured cars saw service in Ireland, as food convoy escorts in London during the General Strike and with Royal Tank Corps Territorial Armoured Car Companies.

During painting in 1984 number 5035-CF was found below radiator flap and 31 on offside door.

Vehicle chassis is the standard 2.5 ton Peerless TC4 chassis and the armoured body an Austin design of 1918. Drive to rear wheels is by sprocket and chain. First car to have controls duplicated at back so allowed the vehicle to reverse easily in an emergency. Used in Irish Civil War, 7 of them handed over to National Army after treaty of 1921. These remained in service until 1934. After this the armoured bodies and guns utilized on locally produced AFVs.

427 Cobra engine compartment, from starboard (passenger in USA) side, aka "right". You can see the hose from the header tank to the radiator close and across the bottom of the photo, and the hoses to and from the oil cooler and filter far and high-up in the photo. Look carefully and you'll see that 1) the radiator is raked back 2) there's a BIG space between it and the engine.

Hence the slightly wonky gear-shift which sprouts out of the tunnel back by your hip- the engine was pushed back until the weight distribution was 50:50 or as close as they could manage. Nice. Very nice.

Meriva®
A Breakthrough in Curcumin Absorption*
Whether taken as a supplement or from food, regular curcumin is generally poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. Working with Indena S.p.A., the worldwide experts in botanical extract technology, we have found the answer to better curcumin absorption – phytosome technology.* Two studies have shown Meriva Curcumin Phytosome to be significantly better absorbed than a standardized curcumin extract.*

For People Who Just Play Too HardTM
We all have occasional aches and pains from over-exertion. We play too hard, work too hard, and we pay for it with stiff joints and sore muscles. Meriva can help reduce the occasional stiffness and soreness we all experience.*

The body's normal inflammatory response is a natural process and a contributor to many reactions that go on in your body. This response happens automatically and is not something you can control. The primary objective of the body's normal inflammatory response is to isolate and eradicate irritants and then repair surrounding tissue.

What is "Normal Inflammatory Response?"
The term "normal inflammatory response" may not mean much to you, but its physical impact on your body is vitally important. It can arise from trauma, infection, or other influences, and is a normal process that encourages healing. From the slightest seemingly harmless bump on your arm to a major health concern, the body's normal inflammatory response is always at work to keep you as healthy as possible or to restore your health as best as it can. Of course, a lot of this depends on individual health.

The body's normal inflammatory response is the protective response of the body's tissues to irritation or injury. Sometimes this response can be prolonged due to a deficiency of essential fatty acids or other nutrients. In such cases, supplementation with beneficial fatty acids or other nutrients is often suggested. Sometimes there are other reasons for a prolonged inflammatory response and physical therapy or dietary changes may be helpful. For centuries, people have used natural chemicals found in plants (phytochemicals) to enhance the body's normal inflammatory response to injury or wear and tear. For example, the bark of the willow tree was used to relieve pain and discomfort more than 2,000 years ago by the Greeks and Romans and evolved into the aspirin we use today.

Curcumin – Supports the Body's Normal Inflammatory Response*
Turmeric, a well-known traditional herb, contains curcumin, a potent antioxidant that offers numerous health benefits.* Most of these benefits come from curcumin's strong antioxidant activity and its ability to support the body's normal inflammatory response.* Curcumin interacts with numerous biochemicals in the body to promote the body's normal inflammatory response and help keep this response functioning as it should.*

Emerging research suggests curcumin's antioxidant activity and support of the body's normal inflammatory response, as well as its potential to support already normal cholesterol levels, has a significant role to play in contributing to cardiovascular health, liver function, and joint health.*

Absorption You've Been Aching ForTM
The potential health benefits of curcumin are the subject of numerous ongoing clinical studies and have been featured in print media and television news programs. However, what makes curcumin so beneficial to the human body – its molecular structure – also makes it difficult to be absorbed into the bloodstream. If the curcumin isn't absorbed, it can't get to the body's cells that need it. To address this issue, Thorne Research has teamed up with Indena S.p.A., the worldwide experts in botanical extract technology, to bring you Meriva Curcumin Phytosome, a well-absorbed curcumin extract.*

Superior Absorption*
Phytosomes are plant extracts bound to phosphatidylcholine (fos-fa-tidal-ko-leen), which is an essential component of human cells. Our bodies make phosphatidylcholine, but we can also get it from food and supplements. When taken orally, phosphatidylcholine is very well absorbed.* To improve absorption, scientists at Indena found a way to attach curcumin to phosphatidylcholine – the result is Meriva! When you take Meriva your body readily absorbs the phosphatidylcholine and the curcumin attached to it, resulting in more curcumin reaching the cells that can benefit from it.*

Superior Bioavailability*
A 2007 study published in the journal Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology demonstrated Meriva's superior bioavailability compared to a standardized curcumin extract. This animal study noted a significantly greater amount of curcumin in the blood and tissue after dosing with Meriva. A human study compared blood levels of curcumin after dosing with 4 grams of a standardized curcuminoid extract to 450 mg Meriva curcuminoids (bound to phosphatidylcholine), and found similar blood levels of curcumin.

Pasadena City Hall

Pasadena City Hall

History

In 1923, the people of Pasadena approved a bond measure issuing $3.5 million towards the development of a civic center. City Hall was to be the central element of this center. The San Francisco architecture firm of Bennet, Parsons, and Frost designed the City Beautiful and California Mediterranean influenced City Hall. It was completed on December 27, 1927 at a cost of $1.3 million. It measures 361 feet by 242 feet, and rises 6 stores. There are over 235 rooms and passageways that cover over 170,000 square feet. The defining dome, located above the west entrance, is 26 feet tall and 54 feet in diameter. On July 28, 1980, Pasadena City Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (listing # 80-000813)

The City Hall has long been a favorite shooting location for filmmakers. The courtyard was used in the 1995 movie "A Walk in the Clouds" to portray a Napa Valley town square. It has also been used as an embassy in the "Mission: Impossible" television series, the Beverly Hills police station in all the "Beverly Hills Cop" movies, and a villa in Charlie Chaplin's Oscar-nominated 1940 film "The Great Dictator."

Seismic Retrofit

From a distance, Pasadena City Hall has always looked as though it has withstood the test of time. However, by the late 20th century, the building was showing signs of age. The 1920's building did not meet modern building codes, and studies indicated that a major earthquake could potentially destroy several parts of the building and likely result in a loss of life The concrete walls had many deep cracks, and two of the stairway towers had considerable damage. There was also water damage from years of storms with little to no repair and maintenance. In the late 90's, an effort to rehabilitate the aging building began, led by Architectural Resources Group of San Francisco, CA.

In July 2004, the building was vacated in order to allow for a complete overhaul of the structure. Over the course of 3 years, all offices and council chambers were renovated, the facade was restored, the building was adapted to meet ADA standards, the building's HVAC systems were replaced and modernized, and new landscaping and architectural lighting was installed all round the complex. In order ensure that the City Hall would withstand future earthquake activity, the building was lifted off its foundation, equipped with structural base isolators, and given a new foundation. The renovation of Pasadena City Hall earned a LEED Gold certification.

Following construction, staff moved back to City hall starting in April 2007. City Hall was fully operational again by July. At the time, the Los Angeles Times noted: "In a city where historic preservation is much like a civic obsession, City Hall has long been among the crown jewels of Pasadena, along with the Colorado Street Bridge, the Rose Bowl and the Gamble House. Although the renovation has been among the costliest public works projects in Pasadena, city officials decided that they couldn't risk losing the landmark in another quake."
