Flickr Hiatus... Unfortunately, I've not been a very good flickr friend lately...I've taken (and am continuing to take) a hiatus as the chaos of life happens--though I am valiantly trying to find some signs of spring for the March flickr challenge and I vow to catch up on commenting SOMEDAY! It's a little over a month until our Ohio Achievement Tests at school so we're in that final crunch review/finish-up; our boys' basketball team is in tournament play so we headed to the Convo last weekend and are headed there again this weekend (go Streaks!); and I decided to crochet the above baby blanket as a recent gift (the colors match the nursery). Crocheting for me (like flickr, reading, and sleeping), is a wonderful, stress-relieving, relaxing activity that I wish I had more time to do. My G-ma Ruth taught me to crochet when I was around 6 or 7 years old. My first few years in 4-H involved spending a week with her in the summer while I completed a crocheted item as a sewing project; such awesome, fond memories of me in one chair crocheting, grandma in another also crocheting, Days of Our Lives on (yes, I watched it THAT long ago and have been hooked on that crazy soap ever since!), French toast for lunch, and cups upon cups of her oh-so-sweet iced tea (I also vividly remember her ripping out rows upon rows of my work whenever I made a mistake :) Anyway, G-ma Ruth is no longer with us...I absolutely treasure some crochet hooks and patterns of hers that I have; I'm not nearly as good as her at crocheting (or many other things...like cooking, for example), but I'm so thankful that she took the time, love, patience, and energy to teach me this life-long skill. I am friends with his mom and was his doula for 2 days while she was in preterm labour. He was born 2 days after the anniversary of Angelique's death so the journey has been a very emotional and cathartic experience for me... baby Josephine in MRI incubator Josephine Tooley was born at 28 weeks of age. Rest in Peace Sweet Ty Ty was my first pet of my very own. I got her in 1989 when she was nine weeks old. My brother rescued her and her sisters when they were two weeks old and due to be put down. When they were old enough to go back to the shelter to be adopted, he took them there, but on the way, he stopped by my office to see if I wanted a cat. I said, "No, I don't want a cat!" So, he said, "Well, at least look at them." and of course I came home with a cat. Ty came home and began her life with me in my little one bedroom Post apartment. She loved to run around the place and chase things that she imagined. She pounced at shadows on the floor and swatted at lights as they moved across the walls. At night she wanted to sleep on top of my head. She used to lie in the sink and drink out of the running faucet. She loved to sit on the balcony of my apartment and look out over the rest of the complex. Simba came along four years ago. Ty wasn't any more thrilled with Simba than she was with Scout when she came in 1995. Ty would walk by Simba, stop and glare at her, hiss and move on. Simba backed up. Slowly. She knew who the Alpha in this family was. As Ty got older, she began to wear out and in the end, it was her kidneys that finally failed her. They basically went overnight. When I got up Friday morning to look in on her, she was lying on the floor, so I rushed her on to the vet. When I got there, she was hurried to the back where she was given oxygen and several warm blankets. Her temperature was too low to register on the thermometer and she barely had any blood pressure at all. After reviewing her chart, they knew it was the kidneys and suggested that I help her along to the next world. Having just been through this a few months ago with Scout, I knew the deal so they took her into a room to let me spend a few final minutes with my baby girl. And then it was over. I cried all the way home. My parents came down immediately and we buried her in a nice wooden box that my dad built. My mom padded it and lined it with white satin and made her a little white satin sheet to cover her up. I made a collage of her photos and put the Rainbow Bridge story in so she would know where she was going. Simba cried and licked Ty on the head. We closed the box and buried her in the backyard next to her sister, Scout. Ty was a great pet for nearly two decades. She has been with me my entire adult life, lived everywhere I ever paid rent or a mortgage, ridden in every car I have ever owned. She is my longest relationship and was a true companion through everything I ever went through. She reigned over all the other animals (and people) who have ever entered my household like the queen that she was. She had a good long life and I know it was well lived. She was loved as much as any cat could be and she always had everything she ever needed and wanted. She was a trouper up until the very end. She went through all nine of her lives and about four of Scout's. Rest in peace sweet Ty. I will miss you deeply and profoundly, but I will see you again one day. I'm sure of it. Born on 12/12/10, Luca weighs a litle under 8lbs now, and is happily home from the hospital at last. He spent about 9 days in the NICU since fluid in his lungs at birth left him with viral pnuemonia (far from uncommon with babies born during this time of the year). Luca is especially special to me for several reasons. For one, he's my first ever cousin on my dads side. Then there's the fact his mother was told she could never concieve or carry a child (they wouldn't even try IVF), and she just showed up pregnant one day after 19 years of marriage. And then there's the fact that his middle name is Andrew, after my little brother who passed away nearly 11.5 years ago from complications of a malpractice suffered when he was only 6 months old. My aunt wanted Luca to be strong like Andrew was. (There was only some mild sobbing in our house when we heard that. We adore his middle name.) And no, you're not seeing things, his skin really is quite a few shades different than mine. He's Japanese American, and will even get to carry dual-citizenship. I'm jealous- the little guy will be bilingual. Last week, I uploaded over 200 pictures to Photoworks.com in order to have some prints made. These are all for scrapbooking. They arrived today, and today, I sorted. These are all photos from the past two years ago so. That's what happens when you don't work on your scrapbooks for a while. These are all sorted by event. I have family, friends, chorus, neighbors, and work photos. And of course, there are Reggie photos. Baby bird. We saved this baby bird today. D saw a nest in a tree by our porch had fallen & he found the baby at the base of the tree. The nest couldn't go back where it was because of wind & stability issues, so I found a container that would hold the nest. D screwed the container with the nest as close to the original spot as possible, then he placed the baby bird back inside. I left D to make sure the parents came back to feed the baby while I went digging for worms & grubs in case we had to feed him. The parents finally came back around & so I left the worms/grubs on a dish on the ground & they actually grabbed the grubs & fed the baby with them. I did a little victory dance watching that happen :D After we got home from work today, D checked to make sure he was still strong & doing ok and that's when he got these pics/video. We saw the parents feed him (or her) several times before we left for work, but I still wanted to make sure he was doing alright. Woohoo! You Gotta Love The Babies :D Our first baby blackbird of the year :D yay!! Not such a great shot but it was taken through the window and it was raining... Also as soon as I'd taken this, the little guy fell out of the tree... His mother was hit by a car and brought to the centre last week. But staff were unable to save her and took the decision to bring out Rupert, a muntjac deer. At six inches tall and weighing just over a 500 grams (the same as a bag of sugar), the premature baby is now in an incubator in the intensive care unit at Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Buckinghamshire. He has only recently opened his eyes. Les Stocker, founder of Tiggywinkles, said: "Rupert's mother had very severe injuries. We brought him out and got him breathing and then he went into an incubator on oxygen. He is now being fed by a tube." Staff are optimistic Rupert, now five days old, will make a full recovery. "Deer are very, very tricky but this one has spirit. He's an extremely feisty little guy and quite pushy," Mr Stocker said.
