metamorphosis: vernissage Feb24, 2pm, ArtsSutton, Qc
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
METAMORPHOSIS | Mixed Media, Digital Art, Video
february 22 - march 25, 2007 | vernissage: saturday, february 24, 2-5 pm
Arts Sutton Gallery presents an exhibition of current works by Mary Bogdan and Ted Yudelson which deal with the theme of change or the hope of change. The two artists address the issue of personal evolution in their own unique way through their encounter with the creative process. Within the moments of incidental illuminations that occur along the way, each discovers hope for metamorphosis, leading to transformation and ultimately, transcendence.
The work involves the recycling, recovery, manipulation and alteration of “found” objects and demonstrates the pursuit of reinvention of self, of an approach to life or a way of being. It addresses the shaping of the self through the creation of art, both on a personal and collective level. The work looks at inner struggles and seeks a better understanding of self and its place in our society. It portrays a quest for healing – a way to undo the past or, at least, to understand the present and invent a better future.
Special Event: An Artist Talk by Mary Bogdan, Saturday, March 10th at 2 pm. No entry fee.
Curator: Kathy Feig
Mary Bogdan holds a bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University, and has participated in creative painting at the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts, and assemblage at the Visual Arts Centre. A graphic designer by profession, she is co-founder and partner of Crayon Design & Communication, a graphic design firm, with husband photographer, Sol Lang, and has won numerous international awards. Her paintings, assemblages and limited edition prints, as well as video, have been exhibited internationally and are in public and private collections.
Ted Yudelson holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from McGill University and has participated in sketching at McGill, stained glass at the Visual Arts Centre and pottery at the Gora Studio. An architect by profession, he is an Associate with the IBI Group, a multidisciplinary international design firm. Ted recently embarked on a project of assemblages, his first major body of work. The mixed media series, called Broken Promises, employs computer components as its primary element.

gis
A geographic information system (GIS), also known as a geographical information system or geospatial information system, is any system for capturing, storing, analyzing, managing and presenting data and associated attributes which are spatially referenced to Earth. In certain countries such as Canada, GIS is more well known as Geomatics. The other definition is, "GIS is a system or tool or computer based methodology to collect, store, manipulate, retrieve and analyse spatially (georeferenced) data."
In the strictest sense, it is any information system capable of integrating, storing, editing, analyzing, sharing, and displaying geographically referenced information. In a more sense, GIS is a tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze the spatial information, edit data, maps, and present the results of all these operations. Geographic information science is the science underlying the geographic concepts, applications and systems, taught in degree and GIS Certificate programs at many universities.
Geographic information system technology can be used for scientific investigations, resource management, asset management, environmental impact assessment, urban planning, cartography, criminology, history, sales, marketing, and logistics. For example, GIS might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a natural disaster, GIS might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution, or GIS can be used by a company to site a new business location to take advantage of a previously underserved market.

planning the technology curriculum
I spent some time planning the 2008-2009 technology curriculum for Honey Creek today. Lots of ideas that have been percolating in the last few months got committed to paper, calendars got printed out, and much outlining was done. There's a lot left to do, but it's a good start!

Sterling Place
Prospect Heights, Brooklyn
The Prospect Heights Historic District includes approximately 850 buildings, predominately single-family row houses and apartment buildings, constructed, for the most part, between the middle of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The Prospect Heights neighborhood is located immediately north of Prospect Park and is bounded by Atlantic Avenue to the north, Eastern Parkway to the south, Flatbush Avenue to the west, and Washington Avenue to the east.
The area was occupied by the Lenape Indians at the time of European contact. During the eighteenth century the land came into possession of a number of different owners, several of whom were slave owners. It was still predominately farm and wood lands until the middle of the nineteenth century.
The two most important factors in the growth of Prospect Heights were transportation improvements and the development of Prospect Park. These transportation improvements included new links between Prospect Heights and the ferries along Brooklyn’s waterfront. Construction began on Prospect Park in 1866 and the park opened to the public in 1871, although it was not yet complete. The land in the southeast part of the district was taken for the park but was not included in the final design and after years of litigation was sold and developed starting in the 1890s.
The earliest houses were built in the Italianate style of architecture, popular from about 1840 to 1870. The two frame houses at 578 and 580 Carlton Avenue appear to date from the 1850s and are the oldest buildings in the district. They still retain some of their Italianate style details. Row houses began to be designed in two variations of the Italianate style, the Anglo-Italianate, popular from about 1865 to 1870 and the Italianate style with Second Empire elements, popular from 1870 to 1885. By the mid-1870s the simpler neo-Grec style supplanted the rounded, ornate Italianate, Anglo-Italianate and Second Empire styles. Prospect Heights has houses dating from the second half of the 1870s and the 1880s designed in the neo-Grec style by prominent Brooklyn architects such as the Parfitt Brothers, John H. Doherty, Nelson Whipple, Jeremiah J. Gilligan, Eastman & Daus and Marshall J. Morrill.
The Romanesque Revival style was very popular in Prospect Heights and there are many excellent examples dating from the late 1880s and 1890s. Classically-inspired styles gained in popularity in America as a reaction to the picturesque Romanesque Revival and Queen Anne styles. The restrained Renaissance Revival style, popular from about 1880 to 1910, is also well represented in the district. Many of the residences designed by Benjamin Driesler, Axel Hedman and Magnus Dahlander, major Brooklyn architects of the time, combined elements from both the Romanesque Revival and Renaissance Revival styles.
The multiple dwellings built in Prospect Heights during the nineteenth century were designed in all of the popular residential styles, including the Italianate, neo-Grec, Queen Anne, Romanesque and Renaissance Revivals styles. These buildings were typically four-story walk-ups. The earliest multiple dwellings in the district appear on Vanderbilt Avenue, in the early 1870s. Vanderbilt Avenue and Flatbush Avenue, two of the major thoroughfares in Brooklyn, are characterized by multi-family residential buildings with ground floor commercial spaces in Prospect Heights.
The Prospect Heights Historic District has some important institutional buildings, including the former Public School 9 Annex, the Duryea Presbyterian Church and the former Mount Prospect Laboratory. Although the district was substantially built prior to 1910, it does have some fine examples of styles popular in the early twentieth century including the Colonial Revival, neo-classical, Arts and Crafts, Art Deco and Moderne styles.
The Prospect Heights Historic District remains among Brooklyn’s most architecturally distinguished areas, retaining some of the borough’s most beautiful and well-preserved residential streets, and featuring a broad array of outstanding residential architecture in popular styles of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The area continues to retain its cohesion due to its tree-lined streets, scale, predominant residential character and its architectural integrity.
The Prospect Heights Historic District includes approximately 850 buildings, predominately single-family row houses and apartment houses, constructed, for the most part, between the middle of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The Prospect Heights neighborhood is located immediately north of Prospect Park and is bounded by Atlantic Avenue to the north, Eastern Parkway to the south, Flatbush Avenue to the west, and Washington Avenue to the east.1 The name Prospect Heights appears to have come into popular use in the 1880s but was often used to refer to the area west of Flatbush

Logans Bachelor Party
All over the Orlando club scene, FL
So , about two weeks ago I was hired to come and shoot at a bachelor party. My first reaction was, " Why would they want that type of evidence? " and " I wonder if it'll be like the Hangover." lmao. But, after meeting some of the guys for coffee at Starbucks to talk over what exactly would be taking place I knew Id be ok and the guys really just were the best of freinds and just wanted the bachelor to have every memory possible . The guys went all out. They rented a party bus , hotel rooms, VIP club rooms at 4 different clubs and the bachelor had no idea until the bus pulled up. haha . I went into it with a very open mind because I really didn't know what to expect , I mean its not every day that a 19 year old girl is even allowed to go hang out at a bachelor party . In all honesty I had a lot of fun. The guys were hilarious. Nothing out of the ordinary really happend the whole night. They were all pretty well behaved haha. A few of the guys got sick, a few passed out, pretty much normal partying stuff UNTIL we got back to the hotel. The bachelor went missing. Literally, was no where to be found lmao. I checked out at 11:30 the next day and no one still knew where he was. I guess that was the only "Hangover moment" we had. There were no babies, or peeing in Mike Tysons pool or an exotic animal locked in the bathroom sadly :( . But all in all it was a good night. I wouldnt mind shooting another one.

PHYSICS DEGREES : PHYSICS

- (degree) a specific identifiable position in a continuum or series or especially in a process; "a remarkable degree of frankness"; "at what stage are the social sciences?"
Physics, degree of freedom, social order, on the fire of time.
Imagine a deep pan, filled with boiling water. Water is people.
0 - People at bottom = Labour, production
1 - Liberal professions, free lancing
2 - creative, leading people, architects
3 - abstract, philosopher, researcher, educators, politician
The different state of matter are in correlation with theoretical degrees of freedom, labour is liquid, creative class is in ebullition, abstract thinkers and trend setters are gaseous. Bottom water needs to be actually hotter than gas to provide transformational state potential.
Now, about technology : what does it change? If everybody is empowered, they are not generally equally empowered. Meanwhile some medias are more democratic than others. Let's take the example of youtube.com : the thinkers propose the idea, the software designer, UI designers build the framework, free lance and labour people use it for entertainment and culture-making. In the process, if everyone is treated not as a user or admin, but rather as a contributor, more creativity comes from the inside of the framework, people posting, having fun. In that sense, technology, when used to develop "playground" type collaborative frameworks, empowers more the lower class with fun, while limitating "leading" people to managment and admin work => Creativity has shifted.

Grand Master Vassily Ivanchuk
July 22 2007, Chess Grand Master Vassily Ivanchuk, number four in the world, participates at the 2007 Empresa World Chess Tournament in Montreal. (Photo Dimitri Papadopoulos/QuebecPress.com)
PHOTOGRAPHER'S NOTE: OK here it goes: I think shooting Professional Chess is one of THE MOST challenging assignment I ever had to face. Let me explain. First of all, When these world's top Chess Grand Masters play, they want ABSOLUTE silence. When I walked into the room, I could literally hear a pin drop. I took out my 300mm 2.8, positioned myself as far as I could and, with some degree of apprehension, I aimed for Vassily Ivanchuk, placed my finger on the shutter button. And waited, and waited, and waited. And more waiting! (oh, did I mention waiting?) With players thinking, stretching, looking at the ceiling, etc. AND THEN, in a lighting-fast move, out of the blue, from nowhere and unexpectedly Vassily makes a move! And in this quiet room, I JUMP ON THE SHUTTER, and like penguins, everybody in the room JUMPS from their seats to the sounds the camera shutter!... CHA-CLUCK! (and that's only 1 photo, shooting 'continuous' will certainly guarantee one the door)
Now, why the photo is a bit on the soft side? Well, as I said, 99% of the time is waiting and out of the blue, chess moves suddenly happen like a lighting jolt, so in my attempt to "wake up from waiting", "track", "aim", focus" "shoot" (all this in a fraction of a second to get ONLY 1 shot), there's some degree of "motion burr". ....and figure, even wide open, I couldn't get enough light in this f/2.8 sucker to work at decent shutter speeds, even with the ISO pushed to the ceiling. ( I think it was one the rarest moments where I was dreaming for a 200mm f/1.8).
So what you see in the photo above, happened in a 'split second'. (and I wouldn't be surprised if the motion blur is not from the lens tracking him, but instead, a fast head movement of his)
To make a long story short, I shot only 25 frames. Next time I'm walking in this event with a quiet Leica Rangefinder film camera... shooting Pro Chess was quite an experience!
