Ben Jonson, dramatist, poet, and actor Benjamin Jonson (c. 11 June 1572 – 6 August 1637) was an English Renaissance dramatist, poet and actor. A contemporary of William Shakespeare, he is best known for his satirical plays, particularly Volpone, The Alchemist, and Bartholomew Fair, which are considered his best, and his lyric poems. A man of vast reading and a seemingly insatiable appetite for controversy, Jonson had an unparalleled breadth of influence on Jacobean and Caroline playwrights and poets. Although he was born in Westminster, London, Jonson claimed his family was of Scottish Border country descent, and this claim may have been supported by the fact that his coat of arms bears three spindles or rhombi, a device shared by a Borders family, the Johnstones of Annandale. His father died a month before Ben's birth, and his mother remarried two years later, to a master bricklayer. Jonson attended school in St. Martin's Lane, and was later sent to Westminster School, where one of his teachers was William Camden. Jonson remained friendly with Camden, whose broad scholarship evidently influenced his own style, until the latter's death in 1623. On leaving, Jonson was once thought to have gone on to the University of Cambridge; Jonson himself said that he did not go to university, but was put to a trade immediately: a legend recorded by Fuller indicates that he worked on a garden wall in Lincoln's Inn. He soon had enough of the trade, probably bricklaying, and spent some time in the Low Countries as a volunteer with the regiments of Francis Vere. In conversations with the poet William Drummond, subsequently published as the Hawthornden Manuscripts, Jonson reports that while in the Netherlands he killed an opponent in single combat and stripped him of his weapons.[1] Ben Jonson married, some time before 1594, a woman he described to Drummond as "a shrew, yet honest." His wife has not been definitively identified, but she is sometimes identified as the Ann Lewis who married a Benjamin Jonson at St Magnus-the-Martyr, near London Bridge. The registers of St. Martin's Church state that his eldest daughter Mary died in November, 1593, when she was only six months old. His eldest son Benjamin died of the plague ten years later (Jonson's epitaph to him On My First Sonne was written shortly after), and a second Benjamin died in 1635. For five years somewhere in this period, Jonson lived separately from his wife, enjoying instead the hospitality of Lord Aubigny. By the summer of 1597, Jonson had a fixed engagement in the Admiral's Men, then performing under Philip Henslowe's management at The Rose. John Aubrey reports, on uncertain authority, that Jonson was not successful as an actor; whatever his skills as an actor, he was evidently more valuable to the company as a writer. By this time, Jonson had begun to write original plays for the Lord Admiral's Men; in 1598, he was mentioned by Francis Meres in his Palladis Tamia as one of "the best for tragedy." None of his early tragedies survive, however. An undated comedy, The Case is Altered, may be his earliest surviving play. In 1597, a play co-written with Thomas Nashe entitled The Isle of Dogs was suppressed after causing great offence. Arrest warrants for Jonson and Nashe were subsequently issued by Elizabeth's so-called interrogator, Richard Topcliffe. Jonson was jailed in Marshalsea Prison and famously charged with "Leude and mutynous behavior", while Nashe managed to escape to Great Yarmouth. A year later, Jonson was again briefly imprisoned, this time in Newgate Prison, for killing another man, an actor Gabriel Spenser, in a duel on 22 September 1598 in Hogsden Fields,[1] (today part of Hoxton). Tried on a charge of manslaughter, Jonson pleaded guilty but was subsequently released by benefit of clergy, a legal ploy through which he gained leniency by reciting a brief bible verse in Latin, forfeiting his 'goods and chattels' and being branded on his left thumb.[2] In 1598, Jonson produced his first great success, Every Man in his Humour, capitalising on the vogue for humour plays that had been begun by George Chapman with An Humorous Day's Mirth. William Shakespeare was among the first cast. This play was followed the next year by Every Man Out of His Humour, a pedantic attempt to imitate Aristophanes. It is not known whether this was a success on stage, but when published, it proved popular and went through several editions. Jonson's other work for the theater in the last years of Elizabeth I's reign was unsurprisingly marked by fighting and controversy. Cynthia's Revels was produced by the Children of the Chapel Royal at Blackfriars Theatre in 1600. It satirized both John Marston, who Jonson believed had accused him of lustfulness, probably in Histrio-Mastix, and Thomas Dekker, against whom Jonson's animus is not known. Jonson attacked the same two poets again in 1601's Poetaster. Dekker responded with Satiromastix, subtitled "the untrussing of the humorous p Lord William Russell William Russell, Lord Russell (29 September 1639 – 21 July 1683), was an English politician. He was a leading member of the Country Party, forerunners of the Whigs, who opposed the succession of James II during the reign of Charles II, ultimately resulting in his execution for treason. Russell was the third son of William Russell, 5th Earl of Bedford later created Duke of Bedford, and Lady Anne Carr. His maternal grandfather was Robert Carr, 1st Earl of Somerset. After the death of his elder brother Francis (1638--1679), he was known by the courtesy title Lord Russell. He and Francis were at Cambridge University in 1654. They then travelled abroad, visiting Lyon and Geneva, and residing for a time at Augsburg. Russell's account is noted for its colorful depiction of their travels. The two made their way to Paris by 1658, and had returned to Woburn by December 1659. At the Restoration in 1660, when Charles II took the throne, Russell was elected as a Member of Parliament for the borough of Tavistock, a seat traditionally held by a member of his family. For many years, Russell appears not to have been active in public affairs, but to have indulged in court intrigue, and is not recorded as speaking until 1674.[1] In 1663 and 1664 he was engaged in two duels; he was wounded in the second one. In 1669, at age 30, he married Rachel (1636–1723), second daughter of Thomas Wriothesley, 4th Earl of Southampton, and widow of Lord Vaughan (c. 1639-1667), elder son of Richard Vaughan, 2nd Earl of Carbery.[2] He thus became connected with Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Earl of Shaftesbury, who had married Southampton's niece. They had a close and affectionate marriage. She corresponded with John Tillotson and other distinguished men, and a collection of her letters was published in 1773. It was not until the formation of the country party (the fore-runner of the Whig party),[3], which opposed the policies of the Cabal (an inner group of advisers to the king) and Charles II's Franco-Catholic policies, that Russell began to take an active part in affairs. With a passionate hatred for and distrust of Catholics, and an intense love of political liberty, he opposed persecution of Protestant Dissenters. His first speech in Parliament appears to have been on 22 January 1674, when he inveighed against the Stop of the Exchequer, the attack on the Smyrna fleet, the corruption by French money of Charles' courtiers, and the ill-intended ministers of the king. He also supported the proceedings against the Duke of Buckingham. In 1675, Russell moved an address to the king for the removal from royal councils and impeachment of the Earl of Danby. On 15 February 1677, in the debate on the 15 months' prorogation (being an extremely lengthy period between sessions of Parliament), he moved the dissolution of Parliament; and in March 1678 he seconded the address asking the king to declare war against France. The enmity of the country party towards James, the Duke of York, and towards Danby, and the party's desire for a dissolution and the disbanding of the army, were greater than the party's enmity towards Louis. The French king therefore found it easy to form a temporary alliance with Russell, Holles and the opposition leaders. They sought to cripple the king's power of hurting France and to compel him to seek Louis's friendship; that friendship, however, was to be given only on the condition that Louis support their goals. Russell entered into close communication with the Marquis de Ruvigny (Lady Russell's maternal cousin), who came over with money for distribution among members of parliament. By the testimony of Barillon, however, it is clear that Russell himself refused to take any French payments. The alarms which culminated in the "discovery" in 1678 of the Popish Plot to murder King Charles II and replace him with James, his Roman Catholic brother, appear to have affected Russell more than his otherwise sober character would have led people to expect. Russell threw himself into the party which looked to Monmouth, the (illegitimate but recognized) son of Charles, as the representative of Protestant interests, a grave political blunder, though Russell afterwards was in confidential communication with Orange. On 4 November 1678, Russell moved an address to the king to remove the Duke of York from his person and councils, including removal from the line of succession. Parliament's insistence on the impeachment of Danby led to it being progrpued on 30 December and dissolved in January. At the ensuing election, Russell was again elected to Parliament, this time as a representative for Bedfordshire, as well as for Hampshire (for which he chose not to sit).[1] The success of the new Whig party in the elections of 1679 led to Danby being overthrown, and in April 1679 Russell became a member of the new Privy Council Ministry formed by Charles on the advice of Temple.[4] Only six days after this, Russell moved for a committee to draw See also: toronto motel hotels continental breakfast sea chest motel florida relais acropolis hotel nice hotel ashford international motel madrid best carribean hotels first hotel amaranten stockholm canary hotel wedding |

1956 BMW 507 The BMW 507 TS, or "Touring Sport," was the brainchild of BMW importer Max Hoffman, who in 1954 persuaded the BMW management to produce a roadster version of the BMW 501 and BMW 502 saloons that could compete with Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz sports cars. Hoffman pushed for designer Albrecht "Zeppo" Goertz, who also designed the contemporary BMW 503, and the Datsun 240Z as the designer, over existing designs by Ernst Loof, whose sketches Hoffman felt were not commercially viable. Goertz was hired by BMW in November 1954. BMW engineer Fritz Fiedler was assigned to design the mechanical package, using existing components wherever possible. The 507 made its debut at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York in the summer of 1955 [2]. Production began in November 1956. Max Hoffman intended the 507 to sell for about $5,000 U.S., which he believed would allow a production run of 5,000 units a year. All up! concepts are designed by Volkswagen Group Chief Designer Walter de'Silva and Head Designer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars marque Klaus Bischoff. Shown at the Frankfurt launch were several further up! concept cars, including a 98 bhp GT up!, a natural gas-powered Eco-up! (with CO2 emissions of 79g/km) and a four-door Cross up!. The original up! concept car used a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, however the production up! model will have a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout, using the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. It will be manufactured in Bratislava, Slovakia. The production up! will use a 3-cylinder 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine. A plug-in electric up! is also expected to be launched in 2013. Our 2009 Corvette Coupe Z51 We drove our new 2009 Corvette Coupe Z51 to Key West -- my Christmas present from my wife (yes, the Cyber Gray Metallic is more beautiful than the Jetstream Blue, Wifey knows best). Here it is in the rear parking lot of La Concha hotel (nestled away, as far as I could and as best as I could, from anyone else -- I'm trying to avoid any chance at dings, although I will never take up two parking spaces, that just invites damage). Parking is scarce on Duval, and normally $20/day at La Concha. But they waived it for us. Did I mention I love being IHG Platinum? Sadly this trip will put the Vette over 1,000 miles, but we won't do many of these (maybe put 5K/year on it, max). Although I love getting 30-35mpg at 50-65mph in 6th gear in this little baby, and still a good 26-28mpg at 75mph. I'm sure I was getting better gas mileage than a Toyota Prius that was struggling at 75-80mph to pass us at one point. We got this Corvette because we're DINKs (Double Income, No Kids), originally looking at a Pontiac Vibe (aka Toyota Matrix) and realizing the gas mileage was no better (in a 1.8L, and worse in the 2.4L), and I already have a crossover SUV in my 4-cylinder Jeep Patriot. I'm still a little bit in shock that the wifey got it for me, after originally shopping and saying "no." But now she's glad she got it for me ... for us. I don't unleash the 436hp of this newer, LS3+NPP design though, or I'd put it around a tree. It's amazing how much Chevy has upped the power in just a few years from the LS1 and LS2 into the 2008+ LS3. I've yet to floor it and I probably never will. A lot of people quote the 0-60mph times of 4.1s in these Z51 packages (supplanted entirely by the full, more expensive Grand Sport option in 2010) with aggressive low gearing, short throw shift. But it's the 0-100mph times that are well under 10s that make passing a breeze, as 3rd gear will take you from 45mph to double, 90mph, in around 5s. At that point, you have to ask yourself if it's worth it, to pass? You'd hit 100mph by the time you've passed someone -- accelerating to minimize time, but resulting in a gross excess of speed. Sure, a LS7 or LS9 in the Z06 or ZR1 drops it closer to 3.5s for 0-60, and both break the 200mph barrier, but do I really need it (not to mention the lack of the removable top or convertible options)? So, in all honesty and as my wife can attest, we spent most of our time sandwiched between people on US-1. The last eighty (80) miles were extremely painful. I don't mind people going under the speed limit, I'll deal with that. Cruise control is nice for just ignoring people. But what I cannot stand is someone making cruise control a non-option, varying their speed so radically over a short period of time that you have to turn it off. When it got horrible in the 35mph Deer area of Mile Marker 40 or so, between the constant slow-downs under 25mph (for no reason) and the "spurt ups" to 40mph, I was really getting worried I was going to be slammed into from behind by other, impatient drivers. So I just pulled off and let everyone pass and then got behind the truck in the rear, leaving several car lengths so I was in his rear mirrors. I couldn't believe it, but I did. And I see myself doing it again in the future. Especially since that truck had started the run down US-1 along with me earlier. It's always one or two drivers that cause everyone to arrive at the same time, and it's just not worth dealing with passing several times to get somewhere -- even if it cuts 15-30 minutes off the trip, just not worth the stress and other non-sense. I mean, more than once, when US-1 became 4-laned again, several people had the inconsideration (insecurity?) to pass me at 10-15mph beyond the speed limit, only to slow down to well under the speed limit (sometimes 10mph or more under) later when it was only 2-lanes again. There's just something about owning a Corvette and being MORE CONSERVATIVE of a driver. I guess that's why my insurance rates DROPPED $100/year (literally around $850/year to around $750/year) from the Ford Mustang, despite the Corvette being over twice the sticker (and nearly 3x the price of my Jeep Patriot, which actually costs MORE to insure if you can believe that). I'm now starting to understand how Corvette owners are a "different breed" and it really is a "different lifestyle." It's no longer about using the power and speed, but about the potential that you just have, and enjoying the road in a relaxed state. It's hard to describe. Ironically, on the drive down it seemed the only other people on the road that seemed to have the same attitude was another couple in a Dodge Viper RT/10 Coupe, with their top off as well. On the Florida Turnpike they let us get over and, just like us, had their cruise control set at 4-5mph over the limit -- enough to keep from getting rear ended, but clearly getting passed by most cars. About the only time we both opene the offending image - it's not even a good sketch! It was done in 2 to 3 minutes. I'm stiff today and can't for the life of me get good drawings out. However, this picture was the cause of freakiness. Read on: First: Tony works for a branch of a Global-wide travel club. He works out of an hotel. I sometimes accompany him to work, mostly to do our laundry for free (yay!) but sometimes to work. I bring books, my laptop and my sketchbook. Today (doing laundry in the hot laundry room) I was on posemaniacs.com drawing 90 second sketches when I decided I needed me some dang coffee. So I make the trip to the lobby and I brought my sketchbook thinking that something might strike my fancy. Now, there are a lot of weird people that seem to LIVE at this hotel. And it's got a life of it's own. I would love to work for a hotel for a bit, just to see the underside of things. However I had no idea it was Bizarre-O-World Special today. I guess I didn't need to pay for entry. A woman came up to me - I have never seen her before - and pointed to my drawings and told me it was inappropriate. NOTE #1: One had boobs. Not BIG boobs with BIG nipples and what not. Tasteful B or C cup boobs in a regular pose. No 'Reclining with Toy' artwork for me on this page (lol, or any other right now). NOTE #2: I struggle between Tony's view on people ("I don't know you, I didn't ask for your opinion, get the fuck away from me you crazy person") and a mixture of Buddhism and Danny Gregory-ism (read The Creative License). I told her I was sorry she felt that way but I didn't feel sketching people was inappropriate. She glared at me with her beady little eyes, her Florida-sun leathered face crinkling up and doing an awful good impression of a burn victim. Her hair was nasty and covered in dandruff (I too am afflicted - I take care of my hair and dry scalp tho) and made me want to ask her to move away before the AC blew some on me. "Them are nay-kid." I kept calm and stayed instead of walking away (for which I am oddly proud) and told her they were but if it made her feel better they weren't real people. They were computer generated figures and the intent was to help people learn to see and draw better. She then said (forgive me if this isn't EXACTLY verbatim) "They already got ya, then, but they ain't gonna get me. They ain't got my eyes yet. Nope. Mine is fine. You drawing them computer people shows me you blind, girl. But people will learn. The world... They coming." My response. "Gotta go. Have a nice night." Sorry Danny. There is only so much 'strange' in stranger that I am willing to deal with. It occurred to me as I took the "long way" back (twists and turns, hoping she wasn't following, not daring to look) that this was exactly the kind of incident that was a catalyst for the main character in Sci-Fi and alien movies. So if I start babbling and acting freaky about shit... Well, they got me then. Hide your babies and write porn until the end. Also the other day I went to WalMart to buy Dr Pepper for my Tony. I get there and there is one case left. It's under a five foot long/wide/tall Jenga pile of Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew. So I start moving the cases for the one Dr Pepper case. I draw a small crowd (maybe five people?) of shoppers who are browsing in the general area. I put the last case on top of my neatly stacked moved cases (now making that corner of the Jenga pile like 7 feet tall) and am moving towards that case when a woman that no shit looked like a methhead (facial sores and Lara Flamboyle body size) grabs it. I get out a "hey" before the small group around me (including and employee) pitch in and tell the beeyotch it's mine. Southern Presidential Ridge Here's a shot from the top of Mt. Jackson looking towards the rest of the presidential range. I love this kind of cloudiness, where it lets patches of sunlight fall on the landscape below. The white object on the nearby slope is the Mizpah Spring Hut. I had a lot of difficulty with this shot with regards to leveling the horizon. I did not get it right in the original shot. Unfortunately the horizon is not visible, and the bottoms of the clouds at this particular moment weren't flat enough to judge by. I rotated slightly to get the Boott Spur ridge level, since I believe it is relatively so in reality. Unfortunately I lost some of the image around the edges doing this. But I think this is fairly close to being level.
