Fountains Abbey - Abbot Huby's tower
Cistercian abbeys like Fountains were originally banned from building towers. By the turn of the sixteenth century the prohibition was no longer enforced and Abbot Marmaduke Huby added a magnificent tower to the outer end of the north transept. It stands 49m (160ft) tall and would originally have been topped off with pinnacles. The Abbey was dissolved in 1539.
Even so, the Abbey sits in a valley bottom and only the very top of the tower appears above the valley sides.

ACCOMMODATION ON KANGAROO ISLAND - KANGAROO ISLAND

Ball of Light Kangaroo Island - Part 2
GLASS GALORE!
With 3 Days to go until we depart for Kangaroo Island I have started getting ready! I have been sick with a cold all weekend, so am running a bit behind. I only got around to booking accommodation and travel today! I bet Peter Lik doesn't have these problems! Anyway, lots to get through so here goes.
I have decided to have a bit of a play with some lenses this trip. I have learned the beauty of hiring lenses. A must if you are wanting to experiment. I will list the lenses, and my thought process behind each one for the trip.
50 1.8 - Owned
I already own this lens, and it has been amazing for me whilst out. Adding the wide open aperture to light painting adds another complete dimension that I hope the 24 1.4 will only add to. I love this lens so much, it is so easy.
17mm Tilt Shift
I have been wanting to play with one of these for long time. For two main reasons. Firstly I am hoping that I can get some really wide shots, and adjust out the warping of the Ball of Light. I have used a really wide lens before and had some crazy egg shaped orbs result. This should be fun. I am also conscious of the fact the Remarkable rocks are large, and some parts quite high. So I am hoping that having this lens will allow me to make the most of this situation. It is a serious piece of glass, and has a retail price in the vicinity of $2,400, os hiring for the weekend is a good test
24 F1.4
When I go back through all of my shots taken with the 24-105 I already own, most of my shots are at 24mm. So going for a prime lens at this focal length makes a huge amount of sense to me. I am really excited about what 1.4 will give me with the stars etc. It is also a super sharp lens overall which I am super excited about. If this lens works well away I will be buying it when I get back. It has been on my wish list for ages!
24-105 F4
I love this lens. It lives on my camera! I only hope it doesn't feel sad whilst sitting in my bag most of the weekend!
So those are the lenses I am taking away. I think we should get some varying results, and certainly some different stuff to normal with such an array!
Yipee!
Circa 2009: The former HMAS FALIE falls on uncertain times in Port Adelaide. Photo WNSF.
4977. We're sorry to say, rust and the elements have now taken a heavier toll on the old girl that the House of Nippon ever could [see preceding entry]. Finally retired as the last commercial sailing vessel on the Australian coast in 1982, the 46m ketch was acquired by the South Australian Government the following year to be used as a heritage fleet flagship for the State's sesquicentenary celebrations in 1986. The work was done by Metal Industry employees and apprentices with grants from the Federal and State Governments. She was re-masted and given new sails, and was fitted with accommodation and a galley below decks. With this arrangement she could carry up to 90 passengers on day trips and 20 passengers plus nine crew overnight.
In the years that followed FALIE became a popular tourist attraction and excursion ship, but never profitably. In 2005 a hull inspection found that her metal plating was so corroded and thin that she could no longer remain in survey.
Since then, plans to moor her at Kangaroo Island as an interpretive museum, and searches for a sponsor to finance her re-plating and rescue have come and gone with nothing happening. Estimates of the repair and rebuilding needed have risen from $1m to $3m.
It's the sad but familiar story for historic vessels. Everyone wants to see them saved, but noone wants to pay for it. The prognosis for FALIE presently looks bleak, and the nautical press speculates on her ending. On our most recent trace, FALIE had been given a new berth outside the Australian Fisheries Academy in Port Adelaide's inner harbour, west of the Birkenhead Bridge, a move approved by the Transport Department and Land Management Corporation. As seen above, FALIE had previously been berthed along McLaren Wharf, where the rust around her hull was becoming very evident.
Photo: posted on the World Naval Ships Forums website and elsewhere several years ago, we have lost our original trace of this image and will credit it adequately if the ownership is brought to our attention.

Pathways of Port Orleans
The walking paths in the Port Orleans French Quarter, with their careful landscaping, wrought iron, brick gutters and shady trees, offer guests the opportunity to walk their resort and feel altogether somewhere else. Around one corner may be a stone fountain, around another an iron gate leading to the riverside, and around yet another a vibrant blue and pink dragon which serves both as Mardi Grad-style decor and as a waterslide for the kids. A sprawling resort itself, it connects along the "Sassagoula River" to the Port Orleans Riverside which offers all its own attractions. But the French Quarter pathways offer a unique feel of shady "Southerness" to wake up to each morning and remind you that you are living, if only for a few day, somewhere far away from reality.
Hotel Lights
The Place D'Armes Hotel is an intimate, historic hotel property perfectly located at Jackson Square in the heart of New Orleans' fabled French Quarter. The Place D'Armes is literally steps away from the St. Louis Cathedral and the rich street theater of Jackson Square and within easy walking distance of all major downtown New Orleans attractions - Bourbon Street, Royal Street, the French Market, and Canal Street.

365 Day 62
I could never do photography for anything but a hobby. I actually attempted something similar to this out of college. I have a bachelor’s degree in Audio Engineering. Out of college at the age of 22 I obviously attempted a career in this field. I got a job at an ABC network affiliate in Connecticut doing broadcast engineering. That was interesting and I had a lot of responsibility. I even made a good amount of money for a 22 year old with no kids. However my working hours were 7pm-4:30am. So I only stayed there about a year. I was young and wanted to hang out and party nearly as much as I wanted a worthy career.
Next stop was this place called Cine-Med in Woodbury, Connecticut. This more closely resembled what I did in college plus it was M-F 8-5pm. I did video editing from medical surgeries that I would film at various hospitals around the country. I flew around various cities and met with surgeons and other people of high ranking to make films for their protegees. Seems cool? Not really, I had to lug around a TON of equipment from airport to airport to hotel to hospital to cab to cab, blah blah. And the material needless to say was *DRY*. Nothing like filming some fat dude get his gut cut open for 10 hrs straight and have to edit this crap down to a 15 minute video that only doctors and nurses will view. I actually wound up getting laid off of this job during the recession of 2001.
Then I landed this job at a Mexican television/radio station called La Buena in Santa Maria, California. I actually moved across the country for a lousy $12/hr. But I had no kids, was 23 years old, and had nothing to lose, so I went for it. This turned out to be even more boring than the last job. I would film these Mexicans doing 2 or 3 minute video shorts of themselves talking advertising their local MTV loser station. They were actually a radio station, but just played music videos on a local cable channel to advertise their radio station. It was really low budget and I really didn’t fit in. I was actually the only gringo there. They wound up firing me.
At this point I realized that although I love doing video, photo, art, etc – I can’t do it as a career, but only as a hobby. Too much pressure to perform. And while I typically THRIVE under pressure, for this type of job it loses its original purpose of being fun. I like doing this shit on my terms, for myself. And the area of the field of video/photo/graphic design that makes money is usually the type that is not fun. Like Weddings make the most money, and that is about as un-art as you can get. People ask me all the time why I don’t do this for money and this is exactly the reason. You lose interest in it, and you start to forget why I love it in the first place when you do it for money.
For the above picture, this is the first time I messed around with textures. I have no idea what I’m doing. And it doesn’t matter, because I’m just doing it for me! It came out pretty interesting I think. Thanks Kelsey for the help!

365 of 365 - Reflections
Today I am in Falkirk (well Polmont I believe) for an exec residential event to continue the mission, vision and values work we did on Friday. It went well and I think we eventually managed to agree (and the mission is pretty much my suggestion, so I'm happy!).
It's the last day of my 365. I don't know how I feel about that. Happy it's over and I won't have any more late night 'oh no, I've not taken the picture', no more having to explain the project to people who think I'm odd for taking pictures of myself and no more mass uploading sessions.
Sad though, I feel I've achieved quite a lot by getting a picture every single day and not missing one at all. I've documented the highs and the lows of this year in a way just a journal wouldn't have let me. And there have been highs and good times, but also there have been some awful times.
Sad as well as I feel privileged to have been allowed an insight into other people's lives, and it's been great watching other people's 365's grow. I also find it fascinating that people have watched mine and supported me through it - Lis, Trish and the others, you know who you are!
So what am I reflecting on for the last year?
- A 'friend' tried to get me sacked from my job, but I fought back and kept it.
- I got re-elected, the students obviously think I'm good at what I do.
- I had lots of great training trips all over the UK
- I went to my first ever ball
- I took time out of work to have days out with friends
- I was involved in the biggest decision my work has ever had to make when we closed down the commercial services.
- I learnt a lot about HR procedures
- I spent a lot of time with my family
- I had a wonderful holiday in the sun
- I said goodbye to my best friend for a year
- I went to see Runrig (twice in one year!)
- I was a Maid of Honour for Amy
- I moved into a flat on my own
- I moved out of Glasgow and into Paisley
- I developed an addiction to Starbucks
- I joined a choir again and re-discovered my love of singing
- I travelled half way around the world on my own to visit Heather.
All in all, a pretty good year, definitely more highs than lows!
I'm going to miss having a project, I might be back...
