Orleans Cheap Hotel
Day 3 - Up by the Riverfront Park we went. We saw things we already did on the first day walking in that area. Then the trolley turned onto Canal St. and still, it was all stores we saw on the past 2 days. There was a really good jazz band playing on a corner. When the trolley went past Bourbon Street, things started to change. More and more of the store fronts were boarded up. Hotels and movie theaters were closed. This was all in the downtown area. When we went under a bridge, and hit the residential/office neighborhoods, things got even more depressing. All along Canal St., major retail stores were closed such as McD’s, Burger King, Blockbuster, Sprint, Papa John’s. A Rite Aid was open, but instead of using the giant store, they are running out of a trailer. Piles of garbage were placed on the streets, houses were abandoned. It was so devastating to see this. The media only covered the days of Katrina, but 9 months from then, there is no media coverage of how hard the recovery is. All along the ride, Rob and I kept snapping photo after photo. With each photo, my heart ached for this city that people have forgotten about. Some guy behind us asked his female friend what the hell we were taking photos of. Her reply to him was “The sky, the trees, every fuckin’ thang.” I found this funny and at the same time sad. The people have gotten so used to the horrible state of things, that they don’t realize for outsiders, this is shocking.
oh, this takes me back to my misspent youth. washing clothes in the hotel bathtub because you're too cheap or broke or busy to find a laundromat whereever you are.
in this case, New Orleans is a sweatier climate than I anticipated. I've been here 24 hours and gone through half the clothes I packed for the trip. Yech!
